O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo numérico sobre o desempenho de trocadores de calor com microcanais. Primeiramente, para a verificação da ferramenta numérica, uma comparação com um estudo experimental conhecido é realizado. Em seguida, aperfeiçoamentos disponíveis na literatura são testados e comparados. As simulações numéricas são realizadas com o software Fluent utilizando o Método dos Volumes Finitos (MVF). O resultado numérico da resistência térmica do dissipador do estudo experimental em que a primeira parte desse trabalho foi baseada ficou em 0,097 °C/W (com uma temperatura máxima de 373 K), enquanto o resultado experimental ficou em 0,090 °C/W, o que representa uma diferença de 7,2 %. São realizados aperfeiçoamentos integrando o trocador de calor a um sistema de refrigeração. Isso reduz a temperatura de entrada e, consequentemente, a temperatura máxima encontrada no sistema (350 K para uma mesma potência dissipada) não havendo mudança na resistência térmica, porém trazendo um ganho em confiabilidade. São apresentadas mudanças na geometria do dissipador diminuindo a área de entrada, com uma sensível piora nos resultados da resistência térmica, fazendo com que a resistência aumentasse de 0,097 °C/W para o canal original para 0,272 °C/W para o canal com menor altura. Apresenta-se um trocador de calor cujos microcanais em suas dimensões longitudinais possuem ondulações, porém os efeitos esperados de melhor mistura e maior área de contato para o fluxo de calor não foram observados para as condições de contorno do experimento original; a resistência térmica calculada foi de 0,102 °C/W. A última análise apresenta uma idealização onde o fluxo de calor é distribuído uniformemente no volume de silício, encontrando-se uma resistência térmica de 0,084 °C/W. This paper presents a numerical study on the performance of heatsinks with microchannels. For the validation of the numerical tool, a comparison with a known experimental study is carried out, then improvements available in the literature on the subject are tested and compared. The numerical simulations are performed with the Fluent software using the Finite Volumes Method (MVF). The numerical result of the thermal resistance of the heatsink from the experimental study which the first part of this paper is based was 0.097 °C/W, whereas the experimental result was 0.090 °C/W (with a maximum temperature of 373 K), representing a difference of 7.2%. An improvement is performed by integrating the heatsink to a HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system, which lowers the inlet temperature and consequently lowers the highest temperature found in the system (350 K for the same dissipated power) without changing the thermal resistance, but providing gains in reliability. Changes in the heatsink geometry are presented by decreasing the inlet area, with a significant worsening in the thermal resistance results, causing the resistance to vary from 0.097 °C/W for the original channel to 0.272 °C/W for the channel that has the lowest height. A heatsink whose microchannels have waves in their longitudinal dimensions is shown, but the expected effects of better mixing and greater contact area for the heat flux were not observed for the boundary conditions of the original experiment, the calculated thermal resistance was of 0.102 °C/W. The last analysis presents an idealization where the heat flux is evenly distributed in the silicon volume, with a thermal resistance of 0.084 °C/W.

Como as plantas de sulfatação liberam energia térmica durante o processo de produção dos tensoativos sulfatados, tornou-se interessante pensar em utilizar esta energia de forma racional, o que pode representar uma oportunidade para aumentar a eficiência energética. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo efetuar um estudo em uma planta real de sulfatação para propor alternativas de reaproveitamento da energia térmica disponível, proveniente dos processos da fabrica. Para definir as formas de utilização desta energia térmica, primeiro foi realizada uma auditoria energética na unidade de sulfatação em cada setor da planta. Após isto, foram apresentadas as propostas de utilização desta energia, denominadas de A, B e C, dentro de um complexo industrial. A proposta A irá consumir a energia térmica da corrente de ar/SO2 que sai do forno para gerar vapor, além de utilizar a energia das correntes de ar quente dos trocadores de calor para aquecer a água de alimentação da caldeira. A proposta B irá utilizar a energia térmica das correntes de ar quente para complementar o consumo energético em um sistema de secagem por pulverização. Já a proposta C pretende usar a energia térmica para aquecer tambores metálicos em uma estufa. A auditoria energética revelou que são consumidos 103,6 kW de energia térmica nos setores de armazenamento de enxofre e secagem da sílica, sendo descartado para atmosfera 730 kW nas correntes de ar quente, e retirados 131 kW para resfriar a corrente de ácido da torre de sulfúrico. Com as propostas, é possível aproveitar até 100% da energia térmica disponível na planta de sulfatação, aumentando em até 87% a eficiência térmica do processo de secagem por pulverização, fornecer até 98% da energia térmica para aquecer o enxofre líquido após o recebimento e promover o aquecimento de tambores em estufa. Desta forma espera-se reduzir o consumo de combustíveis utilizados na geração de vapor e aquecimento de ar para o secador, representando redução entre 9.419,00 R$/mês a 304.727,00 R$/mês, de acordo com a capacidade de operação das propostas de reaproveitamento energético. One way to reduce production costs of a sulfation unit is to decrease the consumption of utilities, especially electricity and steam. As the sulfation plants release thermal energy during the production process of sulfated surfactants, it becomes interesting to think about using this energy in a rational way, which may represent an opportunity to increase the energetic efficiency. This paper has the objective to make a study in a real plant sulfation to propose alternatives reuse of thermal energy available in the processes of the fabric. To define ways to use this thermal energy, an energy audit was firstly fulfilled in sulfation unit to quantify the thermal energy present in every sector of the plant. In the sequence, proposals have been presented for using this energy, called A, B and C, within an industrial complex. The proposal A consumes the thermal energy of the air stream/SO2 exiting the furnace to generate steam, using the energy of the hot air flows from heat exchangers to heat the feed water of the steam boiler. The proposal B uses the thermal energy of the hot air currents to complement the energy consumption in a spray drying system. Proposal C is presented to use the thermal energy to heat metal drums in a hothouse. The energy audit showed that 103,6 kW of thermal energy are consumed in the drying of silica and sulfur storage sectors, but 730 kW are discharged to atmosphere in the hot air currents, and 131 kW are withdraw to cool the acid chain sulfuric tower. With the proposals, it is possible to use 100% of the thermal energy available in the sulfation plant, increasing the thermal efficiency of spray drying processes until 87%, providing until 98% of the thermal energy to heat the liquid sulfur after reception and promote heating drums in an oven. In this way, a reduction in the consumption of fuels used to generate steam and heating air to the dryer may represent a reduction in the range 9,419.00 R$/month to 304,727.00 R$/month, according to the operating capacity of energy reuse of proposals.

These baffles serve two basic functions: (a) they provide tube supports, thereby preventing or reducing mechanical problems, such as sagging or vibration; (b) they direct the fluid flow over the tubes so as to introduce a cross-flow component, thereby increasing the heat transfer. Segmented baffles have several sources of performance loss, some due to various leakage flows and others caused by stagnation zones. A new concept of longitudinal flow heat exchanger - based on placing twisted tapes along the tube bundle subchannels - was developed to mitigate drawbacks of other types of tubular heat exchangers. In this paper, a numerical model has been implemented in order to simulate the thermal-hydraulic feature of tubular heat exchangers equipped either with segmental baffles or with subchannel twisted tapes. The tube bundle has been described by means of an equivalent porous medium type model, allowing a macroscopic description of the shell-side flow. The basic equations - continuity, momentum and energy - have been solved by using the finite volume method. Typical numerical results have been compared with experimental data, reaching a very good agreement. A comparative analysis of different types of heat exchangers has been carried out, revealing the satisfactory thermal-hydraulic efficiency level of the twisted tapes heat exchangers.
