Objective. To evaluate whether use of a culturally adapted mobile application (app) for adolescents with type 1 diabetes is associated with improved metabolic control. Methods. The Dominican Republic’s National Institute of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Nutrition and the Learning to Live clinic recruited 23 pediatric participants for the study. Blood tests were performed before and after use of the app for a period of 3 months. Based on the user profile, participants were encouraged to use the app’s bolus insulin calculator after each meal. The app included a list of regionally and culturally specific foods, color-coded to indicate a high glycemic index (GI) as red; medium GI as yellow; and low GI as green. The color-coding was designed to assist participants in making healthier eating choices. Results. There were statistically significant improvements in lipid profile. Mean high-density lipoprotein values rose to acceptable levels, while low-density lipoproteins and triglyceride levels fell to the recommended values. The overall quality of life increased, although glycated hemoglobin levels showed no statistically significant changes. Conclusion. The findings of this study suggest that using this culturally tailored app can help young patients with type 1 diabetes to improve metabolic health.

Background and aims: Ferns are sensitive to environmental changes, inhabiting ecosystems susceptible to degradation. Spore banks and in vitro spore culture are useful tools employed in their conservation. The objective was to test the ability of the spores to germinate after being stored in a freezer and to develop gametophytes and sporophytes, in native fern species of genera Amauropelta, Blechnum and Physematium. M&M: Spores of A. argentina, B. auriculatum and P. montevidensis were stored at -20 ºC in dry conditions for 6 and 12 months. They were sown in vitro in Dyer liquid medium and incubated in a growth chamber. The means of germination percentages were calculated and a one-way Student’s t-test was employed. Gametophyte and sporophyte development was registered under light and stereoscopic microscopes. Results: Depending on the species, statistical differences were recorded in germination percentages (viability) between both storage periods. The spores of A. argentina kept in freezer for 12 months completely lost viability. In B. auriculatum, viability decreased over time, and in P. montevidensis it remained constant. Gametophytes and sporophytes developed in all cultures; except in A. argentina spores, with 12 months in freezer. Conclusions: The viability of the spores under dry storage at low temperature could be conditioned by the ecological requirements of the species. Protocols used for spore storage and culture allowed obtaining gametophytes and sporophytes in trials.

The detection of ionising radiation in materials from the decommissioning of a dicalcium phosphate plant meant that this whole operation had to be overhauled in terms of radiological protection and safety. Thus, an operations plan was drawn up that included: initial training for all workers involved, measurements of dose rates and a set of analyses by gamma and alpha spectrometry. Samples of "dry sludge" and debris were analysed for the identification and quantification of the radionuclides present, samples of workers' urine were analysed for the detection of any internal contamination, samples of washing water and air filters were analysed for the detection and control of any radioactive atmospheric contamination. In addition, individual dosimeters were distributed to workers. The extent of contamination was identified and the areas where higher values were detected were properly marked. From the results obtained (radiation dose rates and activity concentrations), it was possible to establish categories and separate the contaminated materials according to their physical characteristics. After the plant decommissioning, the resulting waste with dose rates higher than the effective dose limits for the public was packed in big bags. These bags were divided in 3 groups according to the external radiation dose rates at contact. This segregation allowed the competent authority to release a significant number of big bags from regulatory control. The remaining big bags are stored in two metal containers subject to regular radiological monitoring. The objective of this work is the presentation of a factual article where the methodology implemented to deal with this situation, which had never occurred in Portugal, is described, having only the Portuguese legislation as a reference.

The exacerbated increase in the use of ionizing radiation to obtain images, and the risks and standards that exist to preserve the health of those who use it, are not properly taken into account when carrying out radiodiagnostic examinations. The professionals who work in these environments play a decisive role in the performance of their numerous activities within radiodiagnostic services, bearing in mind that any dose of radiation is associated with a probability of biological effects occurring, no matter how low that dose may be. Thus, the aim of building a software program was to optimize the work of the multiprofessional and interdisciplinary team in radiodiagnostic services, in the management of radiological protection. This is a methodological and quasi-experimental study carried out in a university hospital in southern Brazil, intentionally chosen because it has a Radiological Protection Committee. This research design was adopted for the development of technological production, in this case software for managing radiological protection. The study was carried out in the radiological protection sector of the radiology department of a university hospital in southern Brazil. The results showed that the software, called SisPRad - Management System for Radiological Protection, is a tool that helps the service's multi-professional and interdisciplinary team in terms of managing radiological protection. Finally, it aims to ensure the safety of professionals working in the service and its users, as well as reducing repetition of activities at management level, and can be adapted for other institutions. The computer registration number 512019002125-8 was obtained from the National Institute of Industrial Property for the first version of the software and the registration number 512023003116-0 for its second version.

Chemistry ,QD1-999 - Abstract
The history of the discovery, use, and development of dyes is closely linked to the history of humanity itself. Among the first records of human civilization are cave paintings made from, e.g., fruits, plants, minerals, and insects. Over the centuries, using different techniques, colors have been given to all types of materials and products, from clothing to food. The chemicals responsible for colors are dyes - a vast collection of molecules of the most varied compositions, but which have in common the absorption of light within the visible window of the electromagnetic spectrum. This article aims not only to review the properties of some classes of natural dyes, their origins, and their applications but also to describe the various computational chemistry methods involved in designing new bio-inspired molecules.

This study offers a comparative analysis of liberation in Buddhism, focusing on Nirvana, and salvation in Christianity, emphasizing redemption. It explores how Buddhism and Christianity address the fundamental human quest for spiritual fulfillment. The analysis reveals that Buddhism views Nirvana as the cessation of suffering through the extinction of desires and ignorance, rather than simply a state of bliss. Christianity, on the other hand, presents redemption as a transformative process involving faith, repentance, and spiritual rebirth, rather than solely relying on divine grace. The study highlights that while Buddhism emphasizes personal effort through ethical conduct and meditation, Christianity combines divine grace with personal commitment and adherence to Christ’s teachings. By emphasizing the nuanced interplay of personal effort and spiritual guidance in both traditions, the study provides a more balanced understanding of how each religion addresses the quest for liberation and salvation.

ABSTRACT Wheel slipping and fuel consumption are variables influenced by tire pressure, speed, ballasting, and soil surface. Once the tractor is present in all agricultural operations, knowledge of these variables is essential to achieving the most operational efficiency. This study aimed to develop an embedded system to collect data and show tractor slipping and fuel consumption in real-time via smartphone. The system was developed using prototyping platforms and validated through randomized field tests under four speeds and two terrain conditions. Three methods for determining slippage under different conditions were compared. The developed embedded system determined an agricultural tractor's slipping and fuel consumption conditions. The slip and fuel consumption rates varied depending on the type of rolling surface (ground preparations) and the tractor's operating speeds. Conventional tillage surface increased fuel demand by 6% and slippage by 17% compared to no-till rates. The proposed embedded system found similar results and could present the slipping values in the developed Android to real-time operation compared to a conventional method. This application shows both slipping and fuel consumption values over time on graphs, which can be very useful during machine operation, helping to define better configuration and reduce environmental impacts.

Studying in a university is one of the most difficult stages in an individual’s professional and personal development. During this stage, the individual experiences myriads of challenges including environmental challenges, financial constraints, mental problems and physical stress. The study is conducted to determine the physical, mental, financial and environmental challenges by the students in the University. The population of the study were 1,199 students’ university students at a higher education institution from the Philippines. The demographic profile questionnaire was initially utilized. After which, the respondents were asked to identify their challenges using a researcher-developed survey questionnaire. The hopelessness questionnaire used in the study was extracted from a standardized compendium of assessment tools. The respondents' profiles show that the majority were female and were not beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). Majority were full time students and many of them came from a family with monthly income less than P12,082.00. Students were found to have high levels of physical challenges and exhaustion at school, were moderately mentally challenged, and have moderate level of financial and environmental challenges. They have a moderate level of financial challenges and moderate level of environmental challenges. Kendall's Tau-B indicated no relationship between the profile of the respondents and the challenges they experienced. Students profile (p-value) in terms of sex, 4Ps, employment status and monthly financial income, respectively for the following challenges experienced: Physical= 0.239; 0.749; 0.462; 0.992, respectively; Mental= 0.878; 0.800; 0.680; 0.576, respectively; Financial= 0.519; 0.323; 0.166; 0.067, respectively; and Environmental = 0.776; 0.492; 0.661; 0.449, respectively. The results of the hopelessness questionnaire indicate that the majority of the students manifested a moderate level of hopelessness. It can be concluded that the physical, mental, environmental and financial challenges of students experienced by students have no relationship with their sociodemographic status but these challenges moderately affected their hope. The data on this present study suggested a need for an intervention to facilitate the struggles of the students in the academe and help them strive to finish their chosen degree.

The condition of pastures during the wet-dry transition period reduces livestock production since there is an increase in dead material and a reduction in green tissues. This study evaluated the influence of grazing management strategies on the structure of the forage canopy during the wet-dry transition period. The pastures were composed of Aruana guineagrass (Megathyrsus maximum Syn. Panicum maximum cv. Aruana) and three legumes: Macrotyloma (Macrotyloma axillare), Calopo (Calopogoinum mucunoides), and Stylo (Stylosanthes macrocephala + Stylosanthes capitata). The treatments corresponded to four forage canopy heights (15, 30, 45, and 60 cm), and the grazing management strategies involved steady or variable stocking rates with sheep. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replications totaling 16 experimental units (paddocks). The masses of grass leaf blades and stems were higher at heights of 45 and 60 cm (P = 0.002), while the proportion of dead material was smaller in these than in the short pastures (15 and 30 cm) (P = 0.0497). There was an increase in the proportion of dead material over the dry-water transition period. The presence of grass and legume leaves was higher in the upper stratum of tall pastures (45 and 60 cm) and the proportion of legumes did not differ between grazing management strategies (P > 0.05). These strategies were represented by canopy heights of 45 to 60 cm and showed more leaf mass, less dead material, and better pasture structure, so these parameters can be used during the wet-dry transition period.

This work aimed to characterize coproducts from extra virgin olive oil extraction, its chemical composition and nutritive value of two olive cultivars (Arbequina and Koroneiki) in industries in Brazil Southern region. Sampling from cultivar Arbequina was done at two moments (time 0 and 48h post processing) and from cultivar Koroneiki, only at time zero was sampled. The composition of the two cultivars was different, as expected. Higher levels of carbohydrates (CHO) and lower levels of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contributed to improve in situ degradability (61.0 vs 43.5% ) of Koroneiki cultivar. Both co-products obtained on the day of processing showed high levels of lignin, which led to a lower level of in situ degradability of the NDF (21.1%). High levels of EE (19.4% DM), total phenols (FT; 1.8% DM), total tannins (TT; 1.11% DM) and TDN (72.7% DM) were also observed. These results demonstrate that the byproduct represents a potential source of lipids and phenolic compounds that can be used to adjust diets as well as the aggregation of functional molecules in meat and milk products. The care in obtaining and preserving the product is important because the material obtained 48 hours after the processing showed losses in the contents of CHO, CNF, FT and TT, which can impair its nutritional value and the potential of use.

This paper targets the quality of tifton bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hays in isoproteic and isoenergetic diets on horse body biometrics. Six equines, between 6.5±0.5 years old and with an mean body weight of 354±50kg, were used in this study. The treatments consisted of six diets and the experimental delineation was the Latin square (6x6). The diet’s forage was composed by a combination of hays, in a factorial scheme (2x3), with two forages (tifton bermudagrass and alfalfa) and three types of hay (A, B and C). There was a significant effect in the variables body weight, abdominal girth, fecal water content, and fecal production for the forage type. Greater digestibility coefficient of dietary dry matter values were identified in the diets composed by type A and B alfalfa hay (64.71±2.38% and 63.45±2.41%, respectively), that have significantly surpassed (P = 0.0061) the results obtained for the type C hay diets. It was possible to conclude that the alfalfa hay provided a reduction in the horse’s body weight and thoracic perimeter, what can be explained by the greater verified digestibility, as well as the lesser fecal water retention with the diets containing only the legume.

Presenteeism is a phenomenon about which a gap has been identified regarding its effects on productivity or worker well-being in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This research analyzes the effects of presenteeism on workers' productivity and mental health, and the moderating-mediating role of mental health in the relationship between presenteeism and productivity. Based on the literature, a model was developed to verify the proposed relationships. To test it, data was collected through an online questionnaire applied to 308 participants who had experienced any health problem during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed model was analyzed using structural equation modeling with partial least squares (PLS) estimation. The evidence indicates the positive effects of presenteeism on workers' productivity and mental health. It also shows the nodal role of employees' mental health in their work performance when they decide to work whilst sick. As a mediating role, the impacts of presenteeism on productivity are high, both with a focus on completing work and avoiding distraction. In the moderating role, the relationship between presenteeism focused on work completion and productivity is weakened.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the performance and carcass characteristics of immunocastrated cattle, in comparison to castrated and non-castrated cattle supplemented on pasture. 36 bovines were used, distributed in a completely randomized design, in 3 treatments: non-castrated animals (ANC), animals castrated late by the surgical method (ACC) and immunocastrated animals (AIC), with 12 replicates each. Immunocastration was performed following the protocol of two doses of the immunocastrating vaccine, with an interval of 60 days, promoting a castrated effect of 120 days. The animals were kept on mixed pasture in an extensive rearing system using rotational grazing, they received mineral supplement in the first 3 months and specific feed for the fattening season in the subsequent 3 months, according to the property’s standards. The total experimental period was 180 days. Data were hidden from the normality test, analysis of variance and mean comparisons were performed using the Tukey test, except for the variable degree of finishing, which was maintained at the chi-square test, at 5%. Average daily weight and total weight gains, hot and cold carcass weights and hot and cold carcass yield did not show statistical differences (P>0.05) for animals submitted to different treatments. However, the cooling loss was lower in immunocastrated animals (P0.05) were verified for the animals submitted to different treatments. Final carcass pH was higher (P0.05) from non-castrated animals. Immunocastrated animals, in a grazing system receiving supplementation, showed similar gains in weight and carcass weight in relation to non-castrated and surgically castrated animals, however, with lower losses to carcass cooling.

Displaced people from Afghanistan comprise the largest protracted refugee population in Asia and the second-largest refugee population in the world. For nearly 40 years, most Afghan refugees have been received in neighboring Iran and Pakistan. In Iran, they have been provided with such provisions as healthcare, education, housing, employment, food, visas, and continuing residence. However, many Afghan refugees face significant barriers in accessing services, particularly when it comes to undocumented persons. This study identifies the factors affecting homelessness among refugees, drawing on interviews with eight Afghan men. We explore a four key elements (4Es) construct for supporting the empowerment of refugee people in Iran through education, employment, economic, and emotional support. The study argues that the 4Es approach can alleviate homelessness among refugees.

The increase in life expectancy among individuals over 65 years of age has changed the age pyramid of the Brazilian population. Quality of life (QoL) is an important parameter to assess health status. The aim of the study was to describe the QoL of elderly people enrolled in an elderly care program, showing associations with the characteristics of the patient, disease, therapy, and social support, contributing to improve care for the elderly who receive this service. This was a descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study with 85 individuals aged 60 years or more, who were literate, independent in activities of daily living, without diagnosed cognitive/psychological impairment, and who had been going to the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Social Center for at least one month. To collect the independent variables, an instrument developed by the authors was used; in addition to the Morisk-Green test and Medication Regimen Complexity Index (MRCI). QoL was assessed by WHOQOL-brief. 89.4% were women; 38.8% were 60 to 70 years old; 77.6% had up to 3 comorbidities, the most frequent was hypertension (77.65%); 49.41% used polypharmacy, the MRCI ranged from 2.5 to 48.0 points for one to twelve medications/day; 57.65% acquired their medication through the SUS; 64.80% had medium/low adherence; 43.53% declared having a good perception of health. As for the WHOQOL-brief domains, the highest mean was obtained in the social domain (75.5), followed by the psychological (68.3), physical (67.1), and environmental (64.8) domains. The results of this study highlighted that the female gender, presence of diseases, therapeutic complexity, and perception of poor health are associated with lower quality of life indices in this population.

Civil unrest is a call for realignment of values in all aspects of society, including medical education. Systematic difference in the treatment of groups of individuals concerning educational curricula has previously been highlighted in South Africa during student-led campaigns to decolonialize and diversify medical curricula1. Institutional resistance that results in a failure to account for the politics of identity or for pluralistic thinking,1 implies that the academic ‘fence of unambiguous knowledge’ not only creates an ivory tower but it may simultaneously insulate itself from community input and access. Confronting the tension between communal meaning (which sanctions a culturally relevant curriculum) and privileged meaning (which derives from a monolithic mindset) demands that educators recognize that the scientific method is only one ‘way of knowing.’ In this manuscript we ask: Who possesses authoritative medical meaning-making? And, Who confers authoritativeness to academia?

Introduction Acrometastases are extremely rare in the hand, with a prevalence of around 0.1% according to the literature. They are normally associated with advanced tumor stages, especially in lung cancer. The present article shows the experience of our center in the management and treatment of these pathologies. Materials and Methods We report a series of 9 cases treated between 1992 and 2020 in the hand and wrist. Data regarding the primary tumor, the target organ, and survival are analyzed. A review of the cases of acrometastasis reported in the literature is also carried out, emphasizing in how many of then the acral lesion was the first sign of an unknown tumor. Results Acrometastases predominantly affect male patients aged around 60 years, and the primary tumor that is the cause in most cases is lung cancer, with a very low survival rate after the diagnosis (of approximately 8 months). Discussion and Conclusions In cases of acral lesion of non-traumatic origin, acrometastases should be considered, especially in patients who have a known primary tumor. In the present series, there were three cases in which the acrometastases were the first sign of a tumor in the patient, and in one of them it was initially treated as whitlow. In the literature, in approximately 50% of the cases, acrometastases are the first sign of the presence of a tumor. Once diagnosed, multidisciplinary medicosurgical treatment is essential to improve the patient's function and pain as much as possible.

ABSTRACT The characterisation of ventilation during the transport of broilers is essential to identify and solve problems related to the microclimate of the load. This study aimed to evaluate the ventilation patterns in alternative load layouts, i.e., with a central span or an air corridor, used in Brazil. Computational fluid dynamics simulations and wind tunnel tests were performed on virtual models and small-scale prototypes, respectively. The results showed that the load layout with a "central span" promoted positive ventilation patterns and increased wind circulation between the crates. However, it reduces the load transport capacity by approximately 20% (70 fewer crates), increasing the number of journeys. Therefore, the modification of the layout can optimise ventilation throughout the load; however, it becomes necessary to reduce the number of crates stacked on the truck, which is not feasible for the commercial transport of broilers because it makes it more onerous.
