My main purpose in this paper is to argue on the meaning of the concept of effervescence within durkheimian work, pointing to the role played by this process in the general scenario of his moral theory. Roughly speaking, the argumentation is grounded on the articulation between three structural premises of Durkheimian moral theory, namely: 1) the attachment between the sacred and the moral ideal; 2) his conception about human nature as essential dual and 3) Durkheim`s normative defence of institutionalization of secular morality. Towards the end I incite the reader to think about the pertinence of his defence of a “secular sacred”, in the light of the moral challenges in contemporary world.

My main purpose in this paper is to defend the centrality of the book The Elemental Forms of Religious Life to Durkheimian moral theory. More specifically, I intend to show its relevance to the normative dimension of this theory, consisting in the defence of the institution of a secular morality. In order to do so, I will present the articulation between two ideas that at a first sight might seem contradictory, secular morality e sacred. This articulation will be put forward while discussing the concept of ideal, as a constitutive aspect of morality, and the process of effervescence, as the key mechanism in the creation of the sacred, converting ideas into moral ideals. Ultimately, is about arguing that the very idea of secular morality also has as its ground a “sacred idea’, the ideal of respect of the human person, presented by Durkheim as the ideal of “moral individualism”.

This paper aims to present some of the main aspects structuring the conception of religious present in the work of Émile Durkheim, taking as its axis the book The Elemental Forms of Religious Life. In order to do so I followed three main arguments, spanning the different moment of the text. The fi rst one is historical-chronological, as it presents the transformations on the conception of religion that reached its pinnacle in the referred book. The second one discusses how his methodological premises delineated the way the author dealt with the religious phenomenon. Finally, the third one articulates the theme of religion with some other crucial aspects of durkheimian social theory. Altogether, those arguments try to make the case for the relevance of reading The Elementary Forms nowadays, as it shows us why religion is still such a central element in contemporary life.
