STATE departments of education , *PRICES , *EGGS , *MUNICIPAL government , *FAMILY policy , *BANANAS , *FAMILY farms - Abstract
Article 14 of Law 11.947 / 2009 of the National School Feeding Program establishes that, of federal transfers to state and municipal governments to carry out school feeding actions, at least 30% must be spent on the purchase of products from family farmers. The first objective is to verify the attractiveness of Article 14 for family farmers in the state of São Paulo, more specifically, its contribution to increase their income and to local development. The second is to assess the level of adherence of the São Paulo State Department of Education (SEESP), and of municipal governments to Article 14, in terms of compliance with its percentage, as well as adherence to the guidelines for nutritional improvement of School Feeding and execution of spending at the local level. As for prices, they analyzed those recorded in 197 CP, in 2012, and 212, in 2013. The prices established in the Public Calls for fresh vegetables and chicken eggs were compared with those of the wholesale ones, practiced at the Central de Entrepostos e Armazéns Gerais of the State of São Paulo (CEAGESP). In just 2% of the cases the prices of Public Calls were less than 50% of those practiced at CEAGESP, in 32%, between 50% and 100%, in 30%, between 100% and 150% and, finally, in 36% In most cases, CP prices were higher than 150% of CEAGESP prices. Although the general reality of the State is unfavorable to the production of food by family farmers, there are more localized situations in which this production occurs significantly. This is the case of Ribeira, with its specialization in banana production and close to the MMSP, and, in part, of Pontal, in which its numerous settlements are related to the fact that the local municipalities fulfill, in 2014, above 30% the Article 14, with almost all purchases made in its territory. CULTURAL property , *FOOD security , *STARCH , *AGRICULTURAL ecology , *AGROFORESTRY , *BANANAS - Abstract
Food culture, the use and protection of biodiversity should be encouraged with a view to food security, sovereignty and health. Arrowroot is part of our cultural heritage, having been cultivated and consumed by pre-Columbian populations. In the Atlantic Forest biome, arrowroot grows in understory, produces rhizomes rich in highly digestible and gluten-free starch, used as a fortifier by our ancestors. The objective of this research was to compare the productive performance of common arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) and ‘guapo’ (Myrosma cannifolia) in an agroforestry management with Gliricidia sepium and banana shrub Nanicão, during five production cycles. The production of M. arundinacea (19.8 t/ha) surpassed M. cannifolia (8.5 t/ha). Rainfall and height of G. sepium were the components that best explained the drop in rhizome production of M. cannifolia as the most drought-sensitive species. The inclusion of G. sepium in the agroforestry system is of importance due to the high contribution of organic residues added to the soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The use of alternative technologies involving biological processes, with economic and ecological gains, is desirable for both the expansion of Musa spp. farming and the renovation of areas with low yields. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can stimulate plant growth, especially by increasing the absorption of phosphorus (P) and other nutrients. This study analyzes the influence of AMF on the growth and physiology of micropropagated Musaspp. plants submitted to doses of P. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 5 x 5 factorial arrangement, in which the factors were inoculation with AMF (Glomus clarum, Gigaspora margarita, , Gigaspora albida,Clareoideoglomus etunicatum, and the control without AMF) and five doses of P (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg kg-1), with four replicates. The application of P doses increased growth in micropropagated Musaspp. seedlings, regardless of mycorrhizal inoculation. The highest rates of mycorrhizal colonization occurred at the lowest P doses, and the dose of 50 mg kg-1 P provided better conditions for mycorrhizal formation in all AMF species under study. The symbioses with AMF, as well as the use of P, increased photosynthesis rate, thus favoring the growth, development, and quality of Musa spp. seedlings. Species G. clarum, C. etunicatum, and G. margarita were the most promising for plant growth.

AGRICULTURAL extension work , *TECHNICAL assistance , *AGRICULTURAL productivity , *FOOD waste , *DESCRIPTIVE statistics , *BANANAS , *CULTIVARS - Abstract
Quantities and causes of banana losses produced by family farmers in a municipality of Amazonas were evaluated. Current research was conducted in the José Lindoso community, located in Rio Preto da Eva, a municipality within the Metropolitan Region of Manaus. Data were retrieved from a sample of 14 banana growers by interview and observation techniques. In the interviews, information was obtained on the management and production of banana crops, whilst collection and post-harvest procedures were monitored for observations. Data analysis was made by descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. Most farms measured 25 ha, with banana crops ranging between 0.5 and 4 ha; ‘Thap Maeo’ was the prevalent cultivar. Results showed that management practices used in the conduction of bananas had interfered in the quality of bananas produced. Physiological, mechanical and biological damages were recorded, responsible for quantitative and qualitative losses in the field and in the storage period on the farm. There was statistical evidence that the size of the property, banana type and family, the age of cultivation, assistance and technical training were the main determinants for losses. Banana growers with older crops and those who receive Technical Assistance and Rural Extension services coupled to training courses tend to have higher loss rates. This is due to high productivity and production of crops, resulting in greater difficulties for the product´s commercialization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MIGRAINE aura , *GLOBAL burden of disease , *PRIMARY headache disorders , *QUALITY of life , *BANANAS , *ODORS , *MIGRAINE , *MENSTRUATION - Abstract
Background: Primary headache is one of the most common disorders treated in neurology clinics. Globally, it has been estimated that the current prevalence of headache disorder in adults symptomatic, at least once within the last year, is about 50%. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015, migraine was ranked as the third most common cause of disability worldwide. One of the significant migraines is migraine with aura, a frequent headache that occurs after or with sensory disturbances. Aim: This study aimed to identify and compare triggers in previously diagnosed patients with migraine with aura (MwA) to those who have not been identified with migraine with aura before but diagnosed according to a questionnaire survey distributed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods: Adults aged 18-50 years were randomly selected in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to participate in this non-interventional, multicentre, cross-sectional study. The study data was collected via an online questionnaire using the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Headache Disorders 2018 and the Cleveland Clinic Canada headache questionnaire. Results and Discussion: Of the 4.140 potentially eligible individuals, 302 were not previously diagnosed with migraine with aura but were diagnosed with a questionnaire (Group A), while 71 participants were already diagnosed (MwA) (Group B). A significant relationship was found among MwA and stress and anxiety, sleep disturbance, noisy places, exposure to lots of lights, prolonged computer work, hunger, fasting, studying for exams, and menstruation in Group A. Group B experienced all of the previous triggers in addition to weather changes, certain odors, and the consumption of cheese, bananas, and hotdogs. Conclusions: The trigger factors are common in individuals with MwA. Awareness of these triggers is essential for preventing the severe complications of MwA, hence, enhance the quality of life of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ALUMINUM sulfate , *FACTORS of production , *MAGNESIUM oxide , *MAGNESIUM , *BANANAS - Abstract
Different processes in ethanol production has wide cost variations. Prime matter and the fermentation medium are a strong factor in production yield. Current assay evaluates the productivity of ethanol from hydrolyzed lignocellulose residues of the banana tree with the addition of different concentrations of magnesium and aluminum in the fermentation must. The banana tree's pseudo-stem (PC) and the leaf mass were used. Wastes underwent pretreatment intercalated between base and acid and, afterwards, enzymatic hydrolysis of the solid fraction was performed. Fermentation assay was composed of two concentrations of aluminum sulfate (0, 50, 100 mg.L-1) and 3 concentrations of magnesium oxide (0, 1, 2 and 3 mg.L-1), with 10 ml of hydrolyzed must. Assay design was totally randomized with 3 replications. Different wastes under analysis (PC and MF) had high glucose rates (73.24 and 79.75 g.L-1 respectively), and showed the capacity of the material for ethanol production. There were significant differences in fermentation in the addition of magnesium and aluminum. Magnesium is capable of raising ethanol production up to 24% whilst aluminum may generate a reduction of 10% in production. However, there were no significant differences in the minerals' interaction, or rather, magnesium did not suppress the toxic effect caused by aluminum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional herbal remedies are naturally occurring, plant-derived substances with limited to no chemical processing and have been used in local or national healing traditions to treat illness. In global health debates, traditional herbal medicines are gaining considerable attention. Many hope new research into herbal medicine will play a vital role in global health. Countries like China, India, Nigeria, USA, and also the World Health Organization (WHO) made large investments in ancient herbal medicines. Currently, the use of the Indonesian plant has dramatically improved the medical and dentistry field. The dental and oral care is often related to wounds, and the Ambonese banana stem has been proven as an effective treatment for these injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the Ambonese banana stem sap through cytotoxicity tests on the fibroblast cell culture of Baby Hamster Kidney-21 (BHK-21). This study was carried out on three BHK-21 fibroblast cell culture, namely, the media and cell control, and the Ambonese banana stem sap with a concentration of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60 %, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100% incubated for 24 hours at 37ºC and 5% CO2. Then, MTT was evenly dispersed on the media to obtain accurate optical density value. All quantitative data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD Test. The result showed significant differences in optical density values between groups with p = 0.000 (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the cell control and the Ambonese banana stem sap group with concentrations of 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 30%, 20%, and 10%. It was also observed that the Ambonese banana stem sap is nontoxic to fibroblast cells since its viability value was more than 60%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The processing of fresh fruits into derived products provides conservation and consumption outside the harvest period, however, it is important that these products reach the consumer market, attending to and guaranteeing their physical-chemical and functional quality. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate physicochemical characteristics and quantification of bioactive compounds in commercial samples of guava and banana sweets, and acerola and guava pulps. The products purchased were represented by four commercial brands, coming from the local markets of Pombal and Patos in Paraíba. Determinations of soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, ratio, water content, fixed mineral residue, ascorbic acid, chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins and total extractable polyphenols were carried out. For ash content, sample A of guava jam stood out among the others, indicating a greater amount of inorganic residue. Samples A, B and C of guava jam and sample D of banana jam had the highest content of compounds phenolic. The sweet banana sample C showed the highest content of soluble solids. Acerola pulp sample D obtained the best result for ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds. For pH, only samples B, C and D of guava pulp are within the limits allowed by Brazilian legislation. Currently, the consumer market for natural, healthy products and a diet rich in fruits has grown significantly. The dehydration technique is a method of preservation, since it prevents deterioration of the product and loss of commercial value. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the microbiological and physicochemical alterations in Prata (Musa AAB) bananas after being submitted to bleaching processes, immersion in citric acid and sucrose solutions and subsequently submitted to high temperature drying, configuring in the fruit dehydration process. For this work, 8 kg of banana of the variety Prata (Musa AAB) were used. Four treatments (T1, T2, T3 and T4) were arranged. The "T1" treatment consists in subjecting the bananas in natura to the dehydration process. In the "T2" treatment, the fruits are subjected to the bleaching technique and then to the dehydration procedure. For the "T3" treatment, the samples were first bleached, then immersed in 1% citric acid solution for 5 minutes, and finally, intended for dehydration. For the "T4" treatment, the samples were initially bleached and immersed in 1% citric acid solution for 5 minutes, underwent the immersion-impregnation pre-dehydration process, and then destined for the "T4" treatment. process of dehydration. It is possible to conclude that among all treatments tested, T1 is the best because it provides results similar to those of other treatments, without generating additional costs with the implementation of techniques used in the present study. Recent trade disputes between the European Union and the United States over bananas have served to emphasize the differences between the “dollar zone” commodity system based on Latin American banana exports to the United States and Europe, and the “ACP system,” based on European imports of bananas produced in former colonies in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The key difference often identified by analysts is the dominant role played by vertically integrated U.S. banana corporations in Latin America in contrast to the ACP production system in which state-sponsored associations of small-scale growers receive preferential access to European markets (Raynolds 2003: 23-47). There can be little doubt that the reorientation of Caribbean producers toward Europe following the Second World War marked a moment when the banana commodity system in that region diverged from that of Latin America. However, the tendency of researchers to focus on twentieth-century banana trades has had the unintended effect of obscuring the trades’ origins in the late nineteenth century, a period when a sharp divide between Caribbean and Latin American commodity systems did not exist. Indeed, it is easy to forget that the roots of the United Fruit Company (today known as Chiquita Brands International) lie in both the Caribbean and Central America.

Sugar consumption has increased worldwide over the past 50 years, which is related to the increase in chronic non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommends reducing the consumption of free sugars throughout life. The Brazilian government announced an agreement with the national food industry to reduce sugar in industrialized food products by 2022. Understanding the reasons related to food choices and looking for alternative ingredients, such as dehydrated fruits, to the use of sugar can be useful tools for reducing consumption of sugar by a population. Among the fruits with great potential, banana stands out, considered easy to grow, of high nutritional value - rich in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals and which due to the high water content is perishable and therefore presents great losses in production. In view of this, the present work aimed to develop a model using a PLS-Path (PLS-PM) modeling to explain the whole set of relationships between the constructs of the Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ) and the interest in products with low sugar content, and to evaluate the dehydration of ripe bananas to obtain ingredient flour as an alternative to the use of sugar by the industries. The results revealed Sensory appeal as the most important construct for consumers for the choice of food, followed by Price and Health. The PLS-PM revealed the Weight Control, Natural Content and Humor constructs, when mediated by Health, as having a direct effect. in the importance given by consumers to low sugar foods. Women (all ages) and younger men, value low-sugar foods and show concern for the body, the composition of food and the influence of food on their emotions. The drying studies of the ripe banana revealed the Page model as the one that best represents the drying kinetics for the 3 temperatures. Differences found were found only in the ash and protein contents when drying at 80 ° C, explained by a change in physical characterization as the drying temperature increased. The energy consumption for heating the banana during drying was lower was at 60° C, followed by 70° C and 80° C. Reduction of the total energy value (kcal) and increase in the amount of neutral fiber were found in formulations of cake (suggested) with flour and sugar substitution The analysis of electronic nose revealed greater similarity in volatile compounds between how dehydrated ripe banana flours at temperatures of 60 ° C and 80 ° C. Thus, drying bananas can be an alternative of reusing the fruit, which can be a strategic alternative to replace commonly used ingredients. The increase in the supply of foods and ingredients more suited to the potential of developing new products, contributing to reducing the consumption of sugary and ultra-processed foods, helping to form healthier eating habits.

BANANA processing , *BANANAS , *BIOMASS , *STARCH , *FRUIT skins , *AGRICULTURE , *COOKING - Abstract
The banana is a fruit well accepted by the population; however, Brazil still loses much of this food after harvesting. One way to prevent losses is to use raw banana. Besides being a cheap food is also highly nutritious. Represents an energy source due to the presence of carbohydrates besides being a source of vitamins and minerals. However, both are present in greater quantity when the fruit is still green. One of the ways to use the raw fruit is producing a biomass through cooking bananas with the peels. The cooked fruit pulp consists of a paste that thickener acts as excellent and does not alter the taste of food, but enriched with minerals, vitamins and fibers, also a source of resistant starch. Resistant starch is not digested by the digestive process and thus presents some actions beneficial to the body, among them we can mention: effects on glycemic response; fiber source; colonic fermentation by bifid bacteria; production of short chain fatty acids (SCFA); increased stool; prevention of intestinal colon cancer among others. This study examined the potential for adsorption of methylene blue, in solution of 50 mg.L-1, by banana fiber spray, to 2 g/L of solution. We carried out variations in temperature and pH of the solution. The results indicate that it is possible to use the banana fiber as adsorbent methylene blue in ambient temperature and alkaline pH values with high efficiency. The FT-IR spectrum showed the presence of carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups on the fiber. Such groups are capable of forming hydrogen bonds with methylene blue and removing it from the aqueous solution. It was concluded that for the conditions tested, the best temperature for adsorption was 25 ° C and pH to better efficiency of better temperature was 11. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
