The present study assessed the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in free-living White-eyed Parakeets (Psittacara leucophthalmus) inhabiting the metropolitan region of Sorocaba. For this purpose, cloacal swabs were collected from 30 parakeets, which were subsequently rescued and directed to the Municipal Zoo of the city. Bacterial culture of the biological samples on selective media and laboratory biochemical tests were conducted for the identification of Enterobacteriaceae. Escherichia coli was observed in 16 birds (53%), Edwardisiella tarda in three (10%), Serratia liquefaciens in two (6%), Citrobacter freundii in two (6%), Enterobacter cloacae in one (3%), and Serratia odorifera in only one bird (3%). Among the tested antibiotics, chloramphenicol exhibited the highest bacterial sensitivity, while aztreonam, cefepime, and ceftazidime showed no efficacy against any of the Enterobacteriaceae identified in the study.
