Layered ferromanganese crusts collected by dredge from a water depth range of 2770 to 2200 m on Mendeleev Ridge, Arctic Ocean, were analyzed for mineralogical and chemical compositions and dated using the excess 230 Th technique. Comparison with crusts from other oceans reveals that Fe-Mn deposits of Mendeleev Ridge have the highest Fe/Mn ratios, are depleted in Mn, Co, and Ni, and enriched in Si and Al as well as some minor elements, Li, Th, Sc, As and V. However, the upper layer of the crusts shows Mn, Co, and Ni contents comparable to crusts from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Growth rates vary from 3.03 to 3.97 mm/Myr measured on the uppermost 2 mm. Mn and Fe oxyhydroxides (vernadite, ferroxyhyte, birnessite, todorokite and goethite) and nonmetalliferous detrital minerals characterize the Arctic crusts. Temporal changes in crust composition reflect changes in the depositional environment. Crust formation was dominated by three main processes: precipitation of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides from ambient ocean water, sorption of metals by those Fe and Mn phases, and fluctuating but large inputs of terrigenous debris.

Resumo O presente trabalho descreve um estudo comparativo das propriedades química e mineralógica de birnessita natural (BIR-AZ) proveniente da mina do Azul (Província Mineral de Carajás, Brasil) e seu análogo sintético obtido pelo método sol-gel (K-OL-SG). As caracterizações foram realizadas por difração de raios X, espectroscopia FT-Raman, análise térmica (TG-DTA), microscopia eletrônica de varredura e análise química. Os resultados confirmam a presença das fases lamelares com sistema monoclínico, grupo espacial C2/m e com os seguintes parâmetros de cela unitária: BIR-AZ, a = 5,148 Å; b=2,843 Å, c=7,175 Å e β = 100,75º; K-OL-SG, a = 5,150 Å; b = 2,846 Å, c = 7,214 Å e β = 101,29º. Birnessita possui estabilidade térmica próxima a 600 ºC, enquanto seu análogo sintético acima de 900 ºC. Bandas obtidas por espectroscopia Raman foram observadas a 635, 570 e 410 cm-1 e atribuídas às deformações Mn-O e K-O na estrutura lamelar. O estudo da morfologia dos produtos revela que birnessita se apresenta como folhas tabulares de 1 a 5 µm, enquanto que o composto sintético possui morfologia em glóbulos (< 1 μm) dispostos aleatoriamente. Abstract This paper presents a comparative chemical and mineralogical study of birnessite (BIR-AZ) collected from Azul mine (Carajás Province, Brazil) and its synthetic analogous synthesized by sol-gel method. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis (TG-DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ICP-MS techniques. The results obtained confirm the presence of well-defined layer structures having monoclinic system, C2/m space group and the unit cell parameters are: BIR-AZ, a = 5.148 Å; b=2.843 Å, c=7.175 Å, and β = 100.75º; K-OL-SG, a = 5.150 Å; b = 2.846 Å, c = 7.214 Å, and β= 101.29º. The birnessite from Azul mine ores shows thermal stability up to 600 ºC, whereas its synthetic analogous, above 900 ºC. FT-Raman bands at 635, 570 and 410 cm-1 were identified and attributed to the Mn-O and K-O bond deformations in the birnessite structure. Óxido hidróxido de manganês (γ - MnOOH) do tipo da manganita foi sintetizado por uma rota simples, em que a chave precursora K-birnessita foi preparada pelo método sol-gel. O tratamento hidrotermal da estrutura lamelar do tipo da birnessita favorece a obtenção de estruturas em túnel, sendo que o tamanho destes túneis depende das condições empregadas na síntese (pH, temperatura e tempo). A comprovação da formação de manganita sob as condições de síntese empregadas foi verificada pelas técnicas de difração de raios X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, análises termogravimétrica e térmica diferencial e espectroscopia de infravermelho. Manganese oxyhydroxide (g - MnOOH) of the manganite type has been synthesized by a simple route with K-birnessite prepared by the sol-gel method. The hydrothermal treatment of the lamellar birnessite type structure facilitates the formation of tunnel structures where the size of the tunnels depends on the synthesis conditions (pH, temperature and time). The evidence of manganite formation under the synthesis conditions were made by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy.
