The following is a chapter from Pessoa: A Biography, forthcoming in July 2021 from Liveright/Norton. It covers the rise and fall of the Empreza Ibis, discussing a little-known poem by Pessoa that suggests the enterprise was doomed to fail as well as his literary reaction to that failure: he began writing the English sonnets that attempted to compete with and perhaps surpass Shakespeare. For the readers of Pessoa Plural, the chapter has been enhanced with facsimile documents from the Pessoa Archive, thanks to the collaboration of the journal’s editors.

BUSINESS incubators , *FACTOR analysis , *BUSINESS failures , *TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *TECHNICAL assistance - Abstract
In Brazil, many actions intend to leverage innovation and technological development of companies. Among them are business incubators, which support the birth and development of innovative projects. However, there is evidence that in the first few years after leaving the incubator, the risk of business failure is high. In this way, post-incubation programs emerge in order to provide support and are important instruments to help newly graduated companies in their process of adaptation to the market. This article aims to identify the main services in a post-incubation program based on the perception of the graduated companies and managers of incubators in Minas Gerais state. For this, the study was characterized by a survey with 60 EBTs graduated until 2017, by the business incubators of Minas Gerais. The study was of mixed nature, and used two sources of data collection (questionnaires with entrepreneurs and interviews with incubators managers). Regarding the analyzes, factorial analysis was used for the questionnaire, and content analysis by categories for the interviews. The factorial analysis for the post-incubation services presented four factors that explain 73.65% of the variance: internationalization opportunities, technical assistance, commercial development and management improvement opportunities. Interviews with incubator managers confirm the third and fourth factor and partly the second factor. As a main contribution of the study it was possible to establish a synthesis of the main useful services in a post-incubation program that can be used by managers of incubators or technology parks. RETAIL industry , *JUSTICE , *BUSINESS failures , *CUSTOMER loyalty , *STRUCTURAL equation modeling - Abstract
The primary purpose of this study is to identify the role of perceived justice in its tridimensional structure through the antecedents of loyalty in a service failure recovery scenario. Therefore, we carried out a survey of 604 consumers from a large Brazilian retail company database. Through structural equation modeling, we identified the relationships between justice and satisfaction (r²=0.61), perceived quality (r²=0.47) and trust (r²=0.5). In addition, we identified how these constructs relate to loyalty (r²=0.70) after the failure has been remedied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HOSPITAL care , *CUSTOMER service research , *BUSINESS failures , *MEDICAL care research , *CUSTOMER loyalty - Abstract
This article presents the results of a research conducted in two hospitals located in Vitória, ES, Brazil, trying to understand how healthcare customers perceive service failures and recovery practices adopted by hospitals. Using the Critical Incident Technique, 311 personal interviews were analyzed. The 555 service failures identified were classified according to the proposed model based on the literature review. In only 2% of the reports, the recovery efforts were satisfactory in customer perception. Despite this low percentage, 62% of respondents would recommend the services of the hospital where the failure occurred. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to analyze the change of entrepreneur's behavioral characteristics before, during and after business failure. The theoretical framework was covered by the following topics: entrepreneur and its types, and entrepreneur's behavior face the business failure. The types used were based on entrepreneur's behavioral characteristics and supported by the following authors of the entrepreneurship literature: Vesper (1980), Miner (1996) and Filion (1999). This study is characterized as exploratory, descriptive and uses semi-structured interviews as data collection instrument. The analysis unit are seven entrepreneurs who experienced the disruption of its business in Sao Paulo. The analysis of behavioral changes and typology of entrepreneurs was performed in a qualitative way, by applying the technique of content analysis. Three categories were defined a priori based on the focus of classification of types of each author: performance (Vesper, 1980), personality (MINER, 1996), and values and entrepreneurial thinking (Filion, 1999). The main result emphasized that behavior of the entrepreneurs interviewed was affected when facing adversity of business failure, influencing their performance, personality, values and entrepreneurial thinking. From this, the changes in their behavioral characteristics caused changes in their entrepreneur's type in the different times of research - before, during and after business failure [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BUSINESS networks , *ECONOMIC impact , *STRATEGIC planning , *INTERORGANIZATIONAL relations , *SOCIAL support , *ECONOMIC activity , *BUSINESS failures - Abstract
The benefits of interorganizational cooperation have been studied extensively by organizational theorists, but few studies focus on failure cases. Despite the large number of successful business networks, many also face difficulties in the organization and management of cooperation, closing their activities without achieving the proposed objectives. This paper presents a case of a failed business network in the supermarket sector. The work has been done in light of the studies of Park and Ungson (2001), Jarillo (1988), Khanna, Gulati and Nohria (1998) and Brouthers, Brouthers and Wilkinson (1995) concerning the difficulties in business cooperation. Through in-depth interviews with the network board directors, with entrepreneurs and with the consulting that supported the network creation, we identified the main factors that contributed to the network failure without reaching the expected results. The factors were divided into two groups: pre-formalization factors of the network, such as profile and selection of participants, the number of participants and the definition of the moment to launch the network; post-formalization factors of the network, including aspects such as the emergence of strategic misfits, the loss of support from the public program and the lack of maturity of the group, who struggled to manage the process of cooperation without external support. As a theoretical implication the study shows some factors little explored in the literature and that can lead to failure of cooperation, as the small number of firms, the wrong time to launch the business network and the group immaturity. The set of elements identified also have managerial implications: business managers and network managers should carefully analyze the profile and strategic alignment of firms setting up the network, avoiding any differences become a problem after the network is already established. BUSINESS research , *DETERMINANTS (Mathematics) , *DEMOGRAPHY , *BUSINESS failures , *REGRESSION analysis , *MATHEMATICAL analysis - Abstract
The aim of this work essentially consists in identifying and analyzing the main determinants of enterprise survival and death in Portugal in 2006. We try to incorporate both endogenous and exogenous factors to the firms. With this aim in mind, we seek to bring together, in an integrated way an array of references and empirical works on Business Demography data. With regard to business failures, the model we used, the Regression Tree, showed that the greater the number of actual births of firms in an industry the higher their mortality rate is. For the determinants of survival, our results show that the average number of persons engaged in business births affects the survival of firms. This means that firms starting their activities with the greatest number of persons employed are more likely to survive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BUSINESS failures , *EMPLOYMENT , *TRENDS , *ENTREPRENEURSHIP , *INDUSTRIAL management , *NEW business enterprises - Abstract
This article intends to create a reflection on the probable factors and causes that lead companies to shut down its activities too early. The scenario modifications related to employment problems and new trends -- that proclaim entrepreneurship as an alternative for keeping professional activities and making both ends meet -- are also approached here. Another aspect that deserves attention is that related to organizations life-cycle, with emphasis on its various phases and main features that support the necessary knowledge and provide us with elements to judge their behavior towards business management. Thus a discussion is made about ways to set up new businesses and to strongly reflect on the mistakes and misunderstandings that so early lead companies to organizational death. A stylized model is presented in which the central bank, the current government and the median voter interact strategically and repeatedly. If the central bank is completely independent, it can always implement an equilibrium in which the monetary policy is tight and beneficial in the long run. However, if the central bank has only operational autonomy, then a sufficiently impatient population may impose a bad equilibrium in which the government and the central bank coordinate their actions to run a loose economic policy that benefits short run economic growth at the expense of higher inflation and unemployment in the long run. RECEIVERS (Commercial law) , *FINANCIAL statements , *COURTS , *BUSINESS failures , *BANKRUPTCY - Abstract
This paper aims at accomplishing an economic financial analysis of corporations in process of receivership, emphasizing the possibility of a financial statement analysis being able to serve as a parameter to identify the business failure process. It uses a descriptive research, with quantitative approach and documental analysis. Ninety-nine processes of corporations in receivership are registered on the applicable civil courts of the city of Curitiba, in the State of Paraná, but the study is restricted to corporations, classified as middle sized by SERASA (a database center), in a total of 10 companies. The methodology adopted has been the "Analysis of the Main Components (AMC)", utilizing the Matlab (Matrix Laboratory) software. This methodology was applied on the 10 companies observed on this study, with the 12 variables corresponding to the selected group of indexes for the analysis of financial statements. The results of the research show which are the main indexes, among the selected ones, with relevance on the analysis of financial statements, to detect the tendency of insolvency. It has been concluded that, within this research, 5 out of 12 indexes studied are relevant to show a tendency to insolvency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to know the causes of micro and small enterprises – MPEs bankruptcy in Guarapuava –PR, from 2006 to 2010. In the research, it was raised the number of MPEs that were created and closed during that period in the commercial, industrial and services sectors; besides, six representatives from linked institutions and of promotion for the MPEs, understanding that the identification of the probable causes of the extinction of those enterprises can contribute for the arising of new ventures in better conditions to enterprising success. The methodology approach used was the qualitative research, where the respondents were asked to answer several questions about the economical, social and environmental variables and the performance of the extinct enterprises in the different issues of those variables. The obtained results evidenced a minor or very small contribution of the social and environmental variables and a very big one of the economical variable as causes for the enterprises bankruptcy, due to the little knowledge of business management, with failures and omissions in all their functional areas. It was possible to conclude as well that, even going through problems of all sorts, an obstacle of cultural nature occurred in the MEPs that closed their doors: they did not seek for assistance, orientation or consulting with the specialized institutions.
