Among the different specializations of current wireless networks, Wireless Mesh Networks are characterized by the decentralization of the communication process, where access points are not available. Moreover, properties such as self-organization, self-discovery, selfhealing and self-configuration allow the deployment of network topologies in a simplified and agile way. However, the development of new solutions to provide Quality of Service is a challenging task due to characteristics of the wireless channel. Problems such as high interference in the transmission channel, low availability of bandwidth, high variation in the network conditions make its development much more complex than solutions for wired networks. One of the major restrictions of currently available solutions in the literature lies in the fact that mesh networks rely on traditional protocols. Such protocols do not take into account, during the routing process, the broadcast transmission nature of wireless networks. In this work, we propose a routing protocol for Wireless Mesh Networks with QoS support, named Multi-User Diversity Protocol with Quality of Service – MuDP-QOS. The MuDP-QoS uses two approaches for transmission based on the multi-user diversity concept (opportunistic routing and network coding) in a hybrid manner. Also, in order to perform the resource reservation, we use an adaptive QoS approach which allows the application defining a range for QoS parameters. Based on this, it is possible to perform an optmization in the resource reservation process according to the network restrictions.

The spread of different kinds of multimedia applications has enabled a powerful interaction between users in diverse locations. However, the best effort service nature of the Internet requires a continuous process of stream adaptation, in order to fetch such differents scenarios of transmission. As a consequence, this additional task should be met in the multimedia application development. On the other hand, according to the great heterogeneity of both transmission resources and terminal requirements, it is impracticable to define a unique adaptation method which be optimal for all scenarios. Therefore, we have an increasing complexity of multimedia application development. This work presents an infrastructure to multimedia application development to support stream adaptation. It provides a flexible way to implement and to use adaptation methods, meeting the requirements of different applications. Within this context, in order to validate the developed work, it was implemented two case studies: how to develop multimedia applications with support of stream adaptation and present the extensibility provided by proposed infrastructure through the dynamic addition of new adaptation methods.

Information security (IS) is of significant importance today because all computer systems need some sort of security layer to maintain their reliability and knowledge base. For a system to have this type of security, it is necessary to employ invasion tests capable of verifying the existence of vulnerabilities that allow its preventive correction against real digital attacks. Such tests are specialized audits and require specific knowledge and considerable investment, both for the hiring of a specialized third party or for necessary training of human resources already available in an institution. In this way, automated computational tools can facilitate the process of the invasion tests, providing diagnoses that can still be interpreted by the expert during the process of these tests. This dissertation proposes an autonomic computational tool called AuDiNoMiC to deal with audit problems in information security. The purpose of this tool is to automate the execution of the intrusion tests to provide diagnoses similar to those of an information security specialist. To validate the tool, a field experiment is carried out, carrying out invasion tests in real domains on the Internet. The results of this experiment indicate that the tool is able to perform the invasion tests successfully, providing information equivalent to those of a human expert. Therefore, the proposed tool is a viable alternative to reduce the operational investments of the tests and losses with incidents related to information security.
