ABSTRACT Vacuum is efficient for incorporating solutes of interest into fruits. In this study, the low glycemic and insulinemic index carbohydrate, isomaltulose, was incorporated into mangos slices by immersion with a vacuum pulse (VP). The influences of the combination of pulsed vacuum time at the beginning of the process (5, 10, 15, and 20 min) and vacuum pressure (24 kPa and 48 kPa, absolute pressure) in the incorporation were evaluated with the multidimensional scaling (MDS) statistical technique. Water loss (WL), solid gain (SG), water activity (aw), and color were also studied. The MDS effectively indicated that the vacuum incorporation (VI) with 10 min of VP at 48 kPa provided a product with higher SG (more enriched), WL, lightness, and lower aw and total color difference. Thus, the VI with intermediate conditions resulted in a high incorporated mango with good quality.

Since the most recent European provisions on the enhancement of Cultural Heritage, much emphasis is being placed on the preservation of the identity values of places, the recovery of local traditions, the virtualization of contexts and their inclusive use. Within this panorama, the work presented here is situated within the study of ephemeral architectures that took place in the city of Paris during the 18th century: a theme of immaterial connotation, whose ideas and testimonies are preserved exclusively through written texts, iconographic apparatuses, and archival drawings. Specifically, the majestic eighteenth-century event held in Paris under the rule of Louis XV and described in the volume entitled Festes donneés par la ville de Paris A L’occasion du Mariage de Madame Louise Elisabeth de France […] (1739) is examined here. Through the discipline of Drawing, as a medium of cognitive investigation as well as narrative and technical representation, this study analyzes the ways in which the project images attached to the text are graphically represented and, through the use of digital modeling, proposes to give form to ephemeral architectures (otherwise described only in orthogonal and perspective projection) and to place them virtually in coeval urban environments. Volleyball performance depends partially on lower limb strength. The phase angle (PhA) is a marker of functional muscle mass and a surrogate measure of athletic muscle performance. This study aimed to verify the correlation between PhA (bioimpedance) and lower limb muscle strength in young volleyball athletes. The sample included 38 young male volleyball athletes (Age: 16.7±1.3 years; Weight: 73.7±9.7 kg; Height: 179.3±6.9 cm). We performed a cross-sectional observational study and evaluated the volleyball athletes for vertical jump tests (Counter-Movement Jump: CMJ and Squat Jump: SJ) and whole-body bioimpedance. The Pearson test showed positive and moderate significant correlations between the PhA, CMJ, and SJ (r=0.550 and r=0.559, respectively). Our findings demonstrated that assessing the PhA through bioimpedance provides relevant measures of muscle strength and power in young volleyball athletes.

The formulation of coffee blends is of paramount importance for the coffee industry, as it provides the product with an expressive ability to compete in the market and adds sensory attributes that complement the consumption experience. Through redundancy analysis and canonical correspondence analysis, it is possible to study the relationships between a set of sensory notes and a set of blends with different proportions of coffee variety through multivariate linear regression models. However, it is unrealistic to assume that such sensory responses are given linearly in relation to the formulation of the blends, since some coffee species have greater weight in the sensory evaluation (quadratic terms) and the effect of the mixtures (term of interaction). With this motivation, this work aims to propose the use of redundancy analysis and nonlinear correspondence analysis through multivariate polynomial regression to evaluate the acceptance of different varieties of coffee blends according to the scores given by the evaluators. Finally, it is concluded that there were gains in the percentage of total explained variance in the polynomial models in relation to the classic models.

Football is a sport that involves a combination of continuous and intermittent effort. Therefore, players need to be able to recover quickly between moments of high intensity to continue to perform at a high level of output throughout the entire match. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of an intermittent exercise protocol on the rate of high-intensive force production through the countermovement test (CMJ) in elite Portuguese female soccer players. The sample consisted of 12 players from the first division of women's football in Portugal (Age = 18.1 ± 0.9 years; Weight = 60.10 ± 5.8 Kg; Height = 1.63 ± 4.8 cm; BMI = 22.48 ± 1.5 kg/m2). The players performed an intermittent exercise protocol on a cycle ergometer, lasting 8 minutes, in which each minute corresponded to 40 seconds of high-intensity (4W/kg, based on the player's body weight) and 20 seconds of low-intensity (75W). Before and after the protocol, the players performed the CMJ. Through the results obtained, it was possible to observe that players presented a significant decrease in the height of the CMJ between the two moments (before- 29.92 ± 3.55cm vs after- 26.92 ± 4.05cm; p < 0.01). The present study allowed us to conclude that intermittent exercise protocol promoted a negative influence on CMJ performance.

Drawing from the lived experiences of female domestic workers in Ethiopia and Tanzania, this article illustrates different ways in which domestic work can be practiced and defined in both countries. It analyses women’s narratives in the present and past tense to explore different situations before and after they come into contact with an NGO that advocates for domestic workers’ rights. Since their childhood, the women interviewed have worked in various kin and non-kin households, and performed different types of domestic work (formal and informal, paid and unpaid, live-in and live-out). The asymmetrical and hierarchical relationships between employees and employers are ambiguous and often confused with kinship or distant kinship. These ambiguities come to the fore precisely when projects fostered by labour activists aim at the formalization of hired care work, that is, skilled employment made up of clearly defined tasks, regulated by written contracts, rights and responsibilities. In contexts where labor protections are poorly enforced, proposals to formalize domestic work can provide an essential reference point for the collective mobilization of women workers. At the same time, proposed solutions favoring the formalization of hired work might clash with local realities and not necessarily be perceived as appropriate by domestic workers.

As redes veiculares buscam por meio de suas aplicações oferecer uma melhor segurança, conforto e entretenimento ao condutor e passageiros. A comunicação nessas aplicações é uma tarefa desafiadora, uma vez que esse tipo de rede envolve alta variação de mobilidade e densidade. Embora grande parte das pesquisas citem a influência desses fatores na comunicação interveicular, ainda são poucos os estudos, principalmente no Brasil, que conseguem demonstrá-la de maneira clara e objetiva. Portanto, o objetivo desta pesquisa é identificar a influência da densidade e mobilidade na comunicação interveicular. Para isso, o protocolo de roteamento AODV foi implementado no cenário urbano da cidade de Jundiaí por meio dos simuladores “MOVE” e “NS2”. Com base na análise dos resultados, pode-se comprovar essa influência, além de destacar a importância da simulação para a identificação de fatores que comprometem a comunicação. Foram consideradas diferentes quantidades de veículos e velocidades para caracterizar cenários com diferentes graus de densidade e mobilidade. Com a simulação, constatou-se a influência da densidade e mobilidade na comunicação entre veículos, por meio das métricas utilizadas: taxa de pacotes enviados, taxa de pacotes recebidos e taxa de colisão de pacotes. A importância da simulação na identificação de fatores que comprometem a comunicação, podendo servir de base para o desenvolvimento de protocolos mais eficientes e adaptáveis aos diversos tipos de cenários existentes.

The theory of singular value decomposition of matched matrices is used to verify the heterogeneity of rows, columns and between matched two-way tables. An exploratory analysis that can be visualized in biplots and through simulations studies with the hierarchical log-linear model using ordinary residuals and the components of residual deviance. The effect of heterogeneity was studied generating different sample sizes and their behavior was checked by adjusting Poisson’s model. We concluded that the model of ordinary residuals is the one that best reflects the degree of heterogeneity among the matched tables. Finally, na illustrative example is presented in order to guide the researcher to interpret the relationship between the results of the log-linear models with the biplots considering the effects between the sum and difference between the tables.

Em 1928, o escritor Mario de Andrade apresentava à conservadora sociedade brasileira as páginas de Macunaíma, um herói sem nenhum caráter. Quatro décadas depois, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade levava às telas o filme Macunaíma, inspirado no livro. Duas aparições criativas sobre o mesmo personagem em diferentes linguagens, que se tornaram símbolos de movimentos artísticos: o Modernismo e o Cinema Novo. Este trabalho propõe analisar as tensões intersemióticas criadas a partir de signos escritos que identificam o herói Macunaíma e sua transposição para a mídia audiovisual, levando em conta os limites de cada suporte e as influências sócio-políticas de cada época.

ABSTRACT Numerous factors are related to the individual sensory perception of consumers, which makes it impossible to adapt a model that explains their behavior. In this context and given the scarcity of statistical indexes that evaluate preferences for specialty coffees, new statistical methods should be studied. To this end, our study aimed to create an index that measures the acceptance of specialty coffees. The index was built considering the fit of regression models as a function of principal component scores. Validation was done by significance tests, whose probabilities were obtained by bootstrapping, considering the main measures used in diagnosing outliers as weights, with application to real data from different consumer groups. The coffee varieties Acaia and Bourbon were discriminated in relation to altitude. In conclusion, the index was adequate for the analysis and characterization of specialty coffees grown at different altitudes.

In the territory of Caserta, among the twenty-four villages near Sessa Aurunca, an exceptional presence for its intermittent history of light and shadow, grey and colours, is that of Valogno, a small village lying on a branch of the provincial road that from the Appian Way reaches Roccamonfina, on the slopes of the homonymous volcano.This paper, integrating aspects of urban history with those of the discipline of drawing, aims to bring Valogno to the attention of the scientific community as a unique example of the application of street art to urban regeneration, in its ethical declination, before its artistic one.The street-art project (titled “The colours of grey” by the promoters) was moved on the one hand by the need to start a path of individual renaissance, and on the other by the idea of involving the entire local community to increase its sense of civic duty, rather than to business. The project has been developed with progressive enthusiasm over the last decade, managing to characterize this village as a singular “arts village”, because it uses arts as a tool to push individual citizens to “give themselves” in favour of the welfare of the community.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.24.2020.4

This contribution brings a critical reflection on the Street Art’s role in relation to the degraded urban places of the city and highlights how it is becoming a vehicle of urban regeneration through a graphic evocation concept of beauty. On this premise, the Street Art production in the Districts of Scampia, Piscinola, Chiaiano and Marianella (northern suburbs of Naples, corresponding to VIII Municipality) will be examined. Through the disciplinary of drawing, will be investigated the design choices which interact with urban context spatial characteristics where murals are placed; quality of the wall; physical dimensions of the works produced; multiplicity of points of view which these social stories activate with places and people. Specifically, will be examined the works of street artists (in architectural and urban scale) such as: Nafir, Xamoosh, Raro, Jorit Agoch, Aiello, Teso and others. Finally, attention will focus to the ‘impermanence’, the Achilles’ heel of this Art. With the help of information technologies and with Memorandum of Understanding, which will be signed between the actuators, it proposed to create a social work to be placed in the Underground stations of Piscinola-Scampia and Chiaiano Marianella. The project consists to create a ‘virtual map’ inserted into totems or ‘technological portals’, informing both cultural activities in the VIII Municipality and social redemption action promoted by Street Art of which, through ‘virtual reconstruction’, the lost or degraded works are documented.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.24.2020.5

Objective: Population neuroscience is an emerging field that combines epidemiology and neuroscience to study how genes and the environment shape typical and atypical brain functioning. The objective of this study was to review key studies on population neuroscience from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and to identify potential gaps vis-à-vis studies conducted in high-income countries. Methods: We conducted a systematic review to search for longitudinal cohort studies investigating the development of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents in LMICs. We performed an electronic search in the EMBASE and MEDLINE databases from inception to July 5th, 2019. Results: We found six cohorts from four countries that met our search criteria: three cohorts from Brazil, one from China, one from South Africa, and one from Mauritius. Relevant examples of findings from these studies are reported. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the impact of the valuable science output these cohort designs promote, allowing LMICs to have a share in frontline global psychiatry research. National and international funding agencies should invest in LMIC population neuroscience in order to promote replication and generalization of research from high-income countries.

In Brazil, coffee beverage quality is classified according to technical recommendations of the Associação Brasileira da Indústria de Café (ABIC), which determines cutoff points to discriminate from non-recommended to gourmet coffees. Accordingly, this study aimed to propose the use of cluster analysis to evaluate coffee blends composed of coffees with different qualities and of different varieties regarding a few sensory properties, using continuous and binary scales obtained by a cutoff, which defines whether the coffee is recommendable or not according to the ABIC criteria. It is believed, therefore, that this technique can be used to analyze coffee beverage quality as it is easily accessible and implemented by researchers. In conclusion, a qualitative cluster analysis using the minimum cutoff value of the ABIC had more promising results. This is because blends whose composition contained high and moderate proportions of specialty coffees were more homogeneous in the clustering.

A pesquisa situa alguns indicadores sobre a produção acadêmica, periódicos e pesquisadores mais envolvidos com o tema fotografia na categoria tecnologia via preceitos bibliométricos. Realiza diagnóstico na coleção principal da Web of Science e recupera fontes documentais na área tecnologia, indexadas de 2001 a 2020. Demostra nos resultados o notório crescimento do tema fotografia – ao que parece devido ao aumento e qualificação dos programas de pós-graduação e das dinâmicas e reflexos, simbólicas e imagéticas, da influência das redes sociovirtuais na infoera.

ABSTRACT Coffee sensory analysis is usually made by a sensory panel, which is formed by trained tasters, following the recommendations of the Specialty Coffee Association of America. However, the preference for a coffee is commonly determined by experimentation with consumers, who typically have no special skills in terms of sensory characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed at applying an intensive computational method to study sensory notes given by an untrained sensory panel, considering the probability distributions of the class of extreme values. Four types of specialty coffees produced under different processes and in varied altitudes in the mountainous region of Mantiqueira, Minas Gerais, were considered. We concluded that the generalized Pareto distribution can be applied to sensory analysis to discriminate types of specialty coffees. Furthermore, the method of importance sampling by Monte Carlo simulation showed greater variability considering a probabilistic model adjusted to identify specialty coffees.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to propose a mixed model for a sensory analysis of four experiments with blends of different standards of quality, including the species Coffea Arabica L. and Coffea Canephora. Each experiment differed in the proportions used to formulate the blends and the concentrations used in preparing the beverages, these being 7% and 10% coffee powder for each 100 ml of water. The response variables under analysis were the sensory characteristics of the beverage found in an assessment made by a group of trained tasters, considering taste, bitterness and a final score. Each description followed a numerical rating scale of intensity that ranged from 0 to 10. The model was implemented using the least squares method; this led to the conclusion that including random parameters in the model, represented by the experiments, made it possible to compare the effect of each component simultaneously for each of the experiments.

Introdução: A Mielomeningocele (MMC) consiste em uma má formação do tubo neural embrionário, ocasionando o não fechamento da coluna vertebral e a formação protuberante de um saco dorsal. Objetivo: Avaliar o estado nutricional de crianças e adolescentes portadoras de MMC. Metodologia: A população desta pesquisa foi composta por 43 crianças e adolescentes entre 8 e 19 anos com MMC, participantes de um programa de iniciação ao esporte, avaliando-se a composição corporal por meio da aferição de peso, estatura, CB, CP, DCT e DCSE. Resultados: 50% dos meninos encontravam-se eutróficos e 28% obesos. Esse valor foi maior nas meninas, onde 43% foram classificadas como obesas. Conclui-se a prevalência de estatura muito baixa para idade entre as meninas, chegando a representar 71% do total. Entre os meninos, 36% se enquadram nessa categoria, prevalecendo estatura adequada para idade (50%). Discussão: As principais observações encontradas foram à tendência, por grande parte do grupo, ao sobrepeso e/ou à obesidade. Porém é possível observar também em alguns parâmetros que parte dos pesquisados encontram-se na categoria eutrófica, e ainda uma pequena parcela na categoria de desnutrição. Conclusão: São necessários mais estudos, para avaliar essa população a longo prazo e definir um parâmetro específico para os mesmos. ABSTRACT Nutritional evaluation of children and adolescents with myelomeningocele inserted in a program of physical activity in the municipality of São Paulo-SP Introduction: A Myelomeningocele (MMC) consists of a bad formation of the embryonic neural tube, causing the spine to not close and the protruding formation of a dorsal sac. Objective: This study had the objective to evaluate the nutritional status of children and adolescents with myelomeningocele, practicants of basketball in a wheelchair. Methodology: The population of this cross-sectional field study was composed of 43 children and adolescents between 8 and 19 years old with myelomeningocele, participants of a sports initiation program, and was assessed the body composition by means of weight, height, arm and calf circumference and skin folds (subscapular and triceps). Results: 50% of the boys were eutrophic and 28% obese. This value was higher in girls, where 43% were classified as obese. The prevalence of very low stature for the age between girls was reached, reaching 71% of the total. Among boys, 36% fall into this category, predominantly age-appropriate height (50%). Discussion: The main findings were the tendency, for a large part of the group, to be overweight and / or obese. However, it is also possible to observe in some parameters that part of the respondents are in the eutrophic category, and still a small part in the category of malnutrition. Conclusion: More studies are needed to evaluate the long-term population and to define a specific parameter for them.

Introduction: Epidemiological studies and about patients' waiting time on queues for corneal transplantation are important, as they allow us to know the assisted population and assist the medical team. Objective: To evaluate the epidemiological and demographic profile of patients undergoing corneal transplantation from January 2014 to September 2018 at a teaching hospital in the city of Santo André, as well as their waiting time for the procedure. Methods: Retrospective descriptive study, performed through analysis of medical records and data from the website of the Government of the State of São Paulo’s transplant center. The study was conducted at the External and Corneal Diseases sector of the discipline of Ophthalmology from Centro Universitário FMABC. The following data were evaluated: gender, age, race, origin and waiting time for the patient to have a transplant. Results: A total of 139 corneal transplant patients were recruited for the study, with a mean age of 47.4±23 years. According to gender, just over half of the transplanted were female (50.4%). Regarding to skin color, 45.3% of the patients were white, 44.6% were brown and 10.1% were black. As for their origin, most patients were from the city of Santo André. Conclusion: This study enabled the assessment and knowledge of the epidemiological profile and waiting time for corneal transplantation in our patients. This information is important, as it helps us to understand the profile of the assisted population and in the organization and planning of the medical team, contributing to better guidance and care for the patients.

Este texto trata de aspectos compartilhados do processo criador de Attilio Colnago, em especial para a mostra “O Encantado” (2014). O foco central está nas mediações entre a mente criadora e a cultura que a envolve e que se materializa como imagem geradora. A partir dos pressupostos dos estudos atuais do processo criativo, buscamos evidenciar alguns aspectos da estrutura rizomática que envolve o gesto criador. O texto procura inferir uma análise de um processo criativo que se constitui como uma linguagem de natureza dialógica que revela a dimensão transcultural e transtemporal do discurso artístico de Colnago. Inferimos que a interlocução estética desse artista, nesta mostra, reopera o vivido a partir de matrizes culturais e conceituais impressas na sua memória e na do público, o que pode ser evidenciado contextos amplos, extra mostra, compartilhados por meio de recursos tecnológicos contemporâneos como o QR Codes. Com isto, busca-se acionar a rede de relações semióticas que nos aproxima das artimanhas dessa mente criadora e dos modos de recepção do público.

Nesse artigo nos aproximamos da reflexão de que uma obra colocada ao público, se vista pelos seus bastidores, por aquilo que a contém e que a gerou, pode fornecer dados inestimáveis para a História da Arte e para os estudos dos processos criativos. Assim, este artigo busca desenvolver um estudo reflexivo sobre o tempo como disparador e como matéria no processo criativo de Cláudia França, na exposição “Trabalho do Chão”, de 2019, quando recria um ambiente doméstico de forma simbólica, buscando gerar reflexões sobre as noções de paisagem e arquitetura e as relações humanas. Partimos da hipótese de que a artista corta o espaço e o reconstrói em uma espécie de tempo como instante, fragmento de uma duração interrompida. Estudamos os cadernos da artista e seus demais documentos de processo, para compreender algumas das escolhas que levaram ao formato final da obra apresentada ao público. Buscamos revelar como procedimentos tradicionais do desenho são incorporados em uma poética tridimensional que compartilha a intimidade da artista. Tratamos seu procedimento a partir de conceitos de criatividade e inovação que toma processos clássicos e os reelabora na construção de uma obra que questiona os limites do desenho e da escultura contemporâneos.

A análise de correspondência é uma técnica multivariada de redução de dimensionalidade aplicada a dados estruturados em tabelas de contingência. Como principal resultado, mapas perceptuais são gerados com o propósito de estudar a similaridade entre os níveis categóricos. Na maioria das vezes, as interpretações dessas similaridades apresentam certa subjetividade, ao considerar diferentes métricas, como por exemplo, a distância de Hellinger e Qui-quadrado. Assim, com o intuito de minimizar essa subjetividade, esse trabalho teve como objetivo propor um índice que quantifique a menor distância entre esses níveis. Foi realizado um estudo de simulação, discutindo-se os mapas gerados em relação a dados reais envolvendo a similaridade de blends formados por cafés de diferentes espécies com avaliações sensoriais considerando os atributos sabor e acidez. Concluiu-se que a proposta do índice, denominado índice de seleção de métrica (ISM), permitiu agregar uma estatística que justifique a métrica mais adequada na análise de correspondência, evitando a subjetividade nas interpretações das similaridades entre os tipos de blends e classe de notas. Em relação aos estudos de simulação a métrica proposta pela distância de Hellinger, o ISM apresentou resultados mais estáveis em relação à distribuição da inércia total nos dois primeiros eixos.

The article discusses ways of approaching the space of nature taken by some artists, whose poetic project to this space can reveals tendencies and internationalities conditioned by cultural variants from the affective relationship between the artist and the space (topofilia). We start from the hypothesis that discusses two ways of approaching the creative process and the spaces taken as art material. We intend to develop one of them, from the project of an artwork: “Entre Saudades e Guerrilhas” by Piatan Lube, which approaches the Nature with a community dialogue sharing social memories and environment, revealing a process based on the collaborative perspective (an the external authors). At this poetic dialogue with space, materials and communities, Lube takes them as basic materials to construct a plastic project as a social sculpture, whose main document of process is the culture and memory of the community.

This work proposes an evaluation – through data simulations – of optimality criteria A and D in mixture designs built from a rotational design, considering a normal model and exploring the edge of zero in parts of simplex components, in addition to the analysis of the use of inverse terms in such components. As a function of the mathematical restrictions imposed on such designs, rotationality is obtained by following a specific algebraic procedure, thus preserving the constant prediction variance in all experimental points. When it comes to mixture problems, a response may show extreme alterations when a part of such components tends to the edge of zero and the models may not be suitable to deal with that. The adequate alternative to deal with such response alterations is to include inverse terms into the models. Given the assessed scenarios, the optimum designs were more robust and more promising than the rotational ones, when evaluating the precision of residual mean squares (RMS) in all such scenarios. When a part of the components tends to the edge of zero, RMS was more precise under the D-optimum designs with inverse terms in the components of the normal lineal model.

ABSTRACT: Coffee crops play an important role in Brazilian agriculture, with a high level of social and economic participation resulting from the jobs created in the supply chain and from the income obtained by producers and the revenue generated for the country from coffee bean export. In coffee plant growth, leaves have a determinant role in higher production; therefore, the leaf count per plant provides relevant information to producers for adequate crop management, such as foliar fertilizer applications. To describe count data, the Poisson model is the most commonly employed model; when count data show overdispersion, the negative binomial model has been determined to be more adequate. The objective of this study was to compare the fitness of the Poisson and negative binomial models to data on the leaf count per plant in coffee seedlings. Data were collected from an experiment with a randomized block design with 30 treatments and three replicates and four plants per plot. Data from only one treatment, in which the number of leaves was counted over time, were employed. The first count was conducted on 8 April 2016, and the other counts were performed 18, 32, 47, 62, 76, 95, 116, 133, and 153 days after the first evaluation, for a total of ten measurements. The fitness of the models was assessed based on deviance values and simulated envelopes for residuals. Results of fitness assessment indicated that the Poisson model was inadequate for describing the data due to overdispersion. The negative binomial model adequately fitted the observations and was indicated to describe the number of leaves of coffee plants. Based on the negative binomial model, the expected relative increase in the number of leaves was 0.9768% per day.

Current study employs Monte Carlo simulation in the building of a significance test to indicate the principal components that best discriminate against outliers. Different sample sizes were generated by multivariate normal distribution with different numbers of variables and correlation structures. Corrections by chi-square distance of Pearson´s and Yates's were provided for each sample size. Pearson´s correlation test showed the best performance. By increasing the number of variables, significance probabilities in favor of hypothesis H0 were reduced. So that the proposed method could be illustrated, a multivariate time series was applied with regard to sales volume rates in the state of Minas Gerais, obtained in different market segments.

Research with honeybee needs experimentation in cages. In laboratory bioassays to assess the lifetime of Apis mellifera, each sampling unit contained a group of bees confined in a cage. Since current is a longitudinal analysis to assess the effect of time dependence on the survival of bees fed on different diets, generalized estimating equations applied to the logit model were used to assess the viability of incorporating correlation structures that related the survival of bees observed in each cage over time, so that the mortality of a given number of bees might influence the mortality of the others. Results showed that there was time dependence between the observations of bees inside the cages, and the working correlation matrix adjusted by longitudinal analysis was ‘Non-stationary-M-dependent’ in which the number of periods of dependence must be specified. Correlations are not the same for all observations of all periods. The solution with granulated sugar and the solution with granulated sugar enriched with lemon juice proved to have the lowest level of mortality during the assessed periods. Assay showed that bees tended to die during daytime.

The main hypothesis of correspondence analysis is given by the independence between the levels of categorical variables. Due to violation of this hypothesis, this study aims to improve the technique of correspondence analysis, providing a new approach for the calculation of the coordinates through the residual incorporation by tables in which categories have different levels of correlation. For this purpose, the simulation was made using Monte Carlo to generate frequencies from the correlated binomial distribution BC (n, π, ρ). It was concluded that in all evaluated scenarios the approach is promising in the sense that the objects were better discriminated against conventional approach. Moreover, the proposed procedure for obtaining the coordinates is likely to be used on real data as shown in the application example.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to quantify the biomass and carbon stock in a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest remnant in southern Minas Gerais. Forest inventory data taken between 2010 and 2013 in permanent plots, was used to estimate biomass with an allometric equation. Basic wood density (Db) and carbon content were determined in the laboratory and the carbon stock was obtained by multiplying biomass by carbon content. The species with the lowest and highest Db were Nectandra lanceolata (0.38 g cm-3) and Machaerium villosum (0.77 g cm-3). The species that showed the lowest and highest carbon content values were Casearia decandra (41.85%) and Nectandra oppositifolia (46.57%). The biomass stock for the area was 126.92 ± 0.09 t ha-1, which corresponded to 55.91 ± 0.05 t ha -1 of carbon stock and a periodic annual increment of 3.07 t ha-1 year -1.

Automatic classification methods have been widely used in numerous situations and the boosting method has become known for use of a classification algorithm, which considers a set of training data and, from that set, constructs a classifier with reweighted versions of the training set. Given this characteristic, the aim of this study is to assess a sensory experiment related to acceptance tests with specialty coffees, with reference to both trained and untrained consumer groups. For the consumer group, four sensory characteristics were evaluated, such as aroma, body, sweetness, and final score, attributed to four types of specialty coffees. In order to obtain a classification rule that discriminates trained and untrained tasters, we used the conventional Fisher’s Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and discriminant analysis via boosting algorithm (AdaBoost). The criteria used in the comparison of the two approaches were sensitivity, specificity, false positive rate, false negative rate, and accuracy of classification methods. Additionally, to evaluate the performance of the classifiers, the success rates and error rates were obtained by Monte Carlo simulation, considering 100 replicas of a random partition of 70% for the training set, and the remaining for the test set. It was concluded that the boosting method applied to discriminant analysis yielded a higher sensitivity rate in regard to the trained panel, at a value of 80.63% and, hence, reduction in the rate of false negatives, at 19.37%. Thus, the boosting method may be used as a means of improving the LDA classifier for discrimination of trained tasters.

The Wald method is grounded on a statistic based on the asymptotic approximation of normal distribution. The method has shown incoherent values at a nominal level of confidence for the probability of coverage in intervallic estimates, mainly in small samples, noticeable in linear functions formed by binomial proportions. Current analysis improves this method used in inferring from binomial linear functions, taking into consideration zero-inflated samples. Improvement was assessed byMonte Carlosimulation techniques within different scenarios. Results show that the improvement proposed is recommended in situations in which sampling proportions are close to 0,5 and produce a maximum variance of the binomial proportions involved in the composition of the linear function.

O artigo discute como os modos de aproximação das práticas estéticas sociais, em especial as colaborativas, são como estratégias de revitalização da arte contemporânea. Foca seu estudo na análise de algumas características do processo criativo de Piatan Lube, nas quais são verificados o que aqui é definido como fantasmas que assombram os artistas na prática efetiva de projetos compartilhados com comunidades. Partimos da ideia de que existem alguns fantasmas que assolam a coerência dos processos criativos colaborativos: o fantasma do autor externo; o fantasma da ausência de coerência interna do projeto e o fantasma da ficção como realidade. A partir desses três pontos, analisamos aqui o primeiro dos fantasmas, o da autoria externa, nessa busca de coerência interna das propostas do artista Piatan Lube, em sua experiência como escultor social.

Para avaliar a influência do gene halotano sobre a curva de crescimento de suínos, bem como sua interação com o sexo do animal, foi proposta uma modelagem hierárquica Bayesiana. Nesta abordagem, os parâmetros dos modelos não-lineares de crescimento (Logístico, Gompertz e von Bertalanffy) foram estimados conjuntamente com os efeitos de sexo e genótipos do gene halotano. Foram utilizados 344 animais F2(Comercial x Piau) pesados ao nascer, aos 21, 42, 63, 77, 105 e 150 dias. O modelo Logístico foi aquele que apresentou melhor qualidade de ajuste por apresentar menor DIC (Deviance Information Criterion) que os demais. As amostras das distribuições marginais a posteriori para as diferenças entre as estimativas dos parâmetros do modelo Logístico indicaram que o peso dos machos à idade adulta com genótipo heterozigoto (HalNn) foi superior ao dos homozigotos (HalNN). A título de comparação, também foi considerada a abordagem frequentista tradicional, baseada em dois passos distintos, a qual, por apresentar um menor poder de discernimento estatístico, não mostrou diferenças significativas

Recently Knüsel (2008) proposed a new method of orthogonal rotation based on chi-square statistic, the Chisquaremax criterion. However, its performance has not yet been evaluated for the effect of outliers. Thus, we assessed the factorial model with Chisquaremax criterion for the effect of outliers using Monte Carlosimulation techniques in different scenarios. The efficiency of covariance matrix estimator provided by the factorial model using either Chisquaremax or Promax criteria was not affected by the presence of outliers. The orthogonal factorial model using Chisquaremax criterion showed better goodness of fit than the results obtained with Promax criterion.

Cheese bread is a Brazilian product which originated in Minas Gerais and which is highly consumed. In industrial production, there is increasing use of additives which enrich and enhance the physical of this product, adding value in the eyes of the consumer. Thus, the purpose of this paper was to study the effect of addition of modified starch and stabilizers on the physical-chemical of cheese bread. For this reason, measures taken so moisture, pH and acidity, volume, density, coefficient of expansion, and compression resistance (texturometer) Results show that the stabilizers used improve these characteristics in the cheese bread, showing better physicochemical characteristics.

Inúmeros experimentos em ciências agrárias apresentam variáveis que podem dar origem a problemas de multicolinearidade. Em se tratando da aplicabilidade de modelos de regressão, o problema da multicolinearidade tem como principal consequência o inflacionamento dos erros padrão e, com isso, o valor da estatística t-student é reduzido de tal forma que interfere nos resultados inferenciais. Várias medidas são propostas, na literatura, para resolver o problema de multicolinearidade. Entretanto, o desempenho dessas medidas está sujeito ao grau de multicolinearidade que as variáveis poderão apresentar, bem como ao tamanho amostral. Frente a este problema, este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar alguns estimadores ridge, utilizando simulação Monte Carlo, bem como, apresentar a aplicação desses estimadores em um experimento, com dados reais, na área de entomologia. Mediante esta aplicação, os resultados expressivos alcançados foram obtidos em função da eficiência dos estimadores ridge avaliados, em relação ao estimador de mínimos quadrados. Em se tratando dos resultados computacionais, concluiu-se que estimadores ridge avaliados são recomendáveis, em experimentos que considerem as variáveis com diferentes graus de multicolinearidade, para amostras maiores do que n=50.

INTRODUCTION: Prospective studies have shown that the course of bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by the persistence of symptoms, predominantly depression, along most of the time. However, to our knowledge, no studies in Latin America have investigated it. OBJECTIVES: To replicate international studies using a Brazilian sample to prospectively analyze treatment outcomes in the first year and to determine potential chronicity factors. METHODS: We followed up 102 patients with BD for 12 months and evaluated the number of months with affective episodes and the intensity of manic and depressive symptoms using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D17). Sociodemographic and retrospective clinical data were examined to determine possible predictors of outcome. RESULTS: Almost 50% of the patients had symptoms about half of the time, and there was a predominance of depressive episodes. Disease duration and number of depressive episodes were predictors of chronicity. Depressive polarity of the first episode and a higher number of depressive episodes predicted the occurrence of new depressive episodes. CONCLUSION: In general, BD outcome seems to be poor in the first year of monitoring, despite adequate treatment. There is a predominance of depressive symptoms, and previous depressive episodes are a predictor of new depressive episodes and worse outcome.

The bootstrap method is generally performed by presupposing that each sample unit would show the same probability of being re-sampled. However, when a sample with outliers is taken into account, the empirical distribution generated by this method may be influenced, or rather, it may not accurately represent the original sample. Current study proposes a bootstrap algorithm that allows the use of measures of influence in the calculation of re-sampling probabilities. The method was reproduced in simulation scenarios taking into account the logistic growth curve model and the CovRatio measurement to evaluate the impact of an influential observation in the determinacy of the matrix of the co-variance of parameter estimates. In most cases, bias estimates were reduced. Consequently, the method is suitable to be used in non-linear models and allows the researcher to apply other measures for better bias reductions.

This study aimed to evaluate the association between responses obtained using methods of adaptability and stability by using correspondence analysis. The forage yield of 92 genotypes of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was investigated. The trial had a randomized block design, with 2 replicates, and the data were used to test the reliability of the different methods. Twenty cuttings were obtained from each genotype between November 2004 and June 2006. Each cutting was grown in a different environment. The estimates of adaptability and stability were obtained using the methods of Eberhart and Russell (1966), Cruz, Torres and Vencovsky (1989), Nascimento et al. (2009b), and Lin and Binns (1988). Following the association analysis, correspondence analysis was conducted for determining association and discriminating the responses obtained using the methods of adaptability and stability. The unfavorable (D) and unpredictable unfavorable (DI) responses obtained using the methods of Lin and Binns (1988) and Eberhart and Russell (1966), respectively, were discrepant in relation to other responses obtained using these methods. The greatest association between responses was confirmed using the methods of Eberhart and Russell (1966) and Cruz, Torres and Vencovsky (1989).

In many experimental situations the sample may present excess zero observations and generally are used probabilistic models for zero inflated to represent them. However no one knows precisely the amount of zero observations that these models support. Depending on the sample size and null observations number the Poisson model can be used. Based on this question, the objective of this paper is to evaluate the properties of Type I error and power of the score test (proposed by Van Den Broek (1995) to discriminate the Poisson and Zero-inflated Poisson models) and ascertain the most appropriate model to represent a sample with excess zeros without compromising the statistical inference. Through Monte Carlo simulation we concluded that when considering a sample of size at least n = 40 with 30% of the null observations, the score test had a high discriminatory power between the ZIP and Poisson model indicating that in fact is relevant the use of the ZIP model.

Mixture Models can be used in experimental situations involving areas related to food science and chemistry. Some problems of a statistical nature can be found, such as effects of multicollinearity that result in uncertainty in the optimization of a dependent variable. This study proposes the application of the ridge model adapted for mixture planning considering the Kronecker (K-model) and Scheffe (S-Model) methods applied to response surfaces. The method determined the proportions of hexane, acetone and alcohol proportions that resulted in the maximum response of percentage of extracted pequi (Caryocar brasiliense) pulp oil.

OBJECTIVE: This article aims to review the comorbidity of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and bipolar disorder (BD), identify variables requiring further investigation and to remind physicians that special care is required for diagnosis and therapy. METHOD: A systematic review of articles published from 1987 to February 2012 was conducted in the Medline database with the following terms: (premenstrual syndrome OR premenstrual dysphoric disorder OR premenstrual) AND (bipolar OR mania OR manic). Seventeen articles were analyzed. RESULTS: PMS and PMDD were most often comorbid among BD-II patients and vice versa. Moreover, patients with PMS or PMDD also have an increased risk of having BD-I. In addition, bipolar women susceptible to hormonal changes exhibit more severe symptoms, more frequent relapses and a worse therapeutic response. CONCLUSION: Future investigations should attempt to stabilize hormonal levels through the continuous use of contraceptives to target a reduction in symptom severity. In addition, psychiatrists should note menstrual period dates and compare symptom intensity between the luteal and follicular phases. Finally, PMS and PMDD patients should be studied separately.OBJETIVO: Esse artigo tem como objetivo revisar a comorbidade entre a Síndrome Pré-Menstrual (SPM) ou Transtorno Disfórico Pré-Menstrual (TDPM) e o Transtorno Bipolar (TB), identificar as variáveis que exigem uma investigação mais aprofundada e lembrar os médicos que as mulheres necessitam de cuidados especiais para diagnóstico e tratamento. MÉTODO: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática de 1987 a fevereiro de 2012 através da base de dados Medline utilizando os seguintes descritores: (premenstrual syndrome OR premenstrual dysphoric disorder OR premenstrual) AND (bipolar OR mania OR manic). Dezessete artigos foram analisados. RESULTADOS: Pacientes com SPM ou TDPM possuem comorbidade com TB-II com maior frequência e vice-versa. Mulheres com SPM ou TDPM também possuem um risco aumentado apresentar TB-I. Além disso, as mulheres bipolares suscetíveis a mudanças hormonais cursam com sintomas mais graves, recaídas mais freqüentes e pior resposta terapêutica. CONCLUSÃO: Futuras investigações devem estabilizar os níveis hormonais com o uso contínuo de contraceptivos na tentativa de diminuir a gravidade dos sintomas. Além disso, psiquiatras devem observar os períodos menstruais e comparar a intensidade dos sintomas entre as fases folicular e lútea. Pacientes com SPM ou TDPM devem ser estudadas separadamente.

The statistical methodology to be used in epidemiological data analysis is extremely important for obtaining reliable and plausible results that can be interpreted in the epidemiological context. In order to carry out a case study about the incidence of the main respiratory diseases in some cities with different climatic seasons, the present work aimed at studying the viability for applying the multidimensional graphic technique known as “h-plot” to identify the main variables that resulted in a higher contribution to the data dispersal. In accordance with the results obtained and discussed, we state that the h-plot graphics are viable to be applied as an alternative method as regards to the identification and collection of the variables.A metodologia estatística a ser utilizada na análise dos dados epidemiológicos é de suma importância para que os resultados obtidos sejam confiáveis e plausíveis de serem interpretados no contexto epidemiológico. Com o propósito de realizar um estudo de caso sobre a incidência das principais doenças respiratórias em algumas cidades com estações climáticas bem diferenciadas, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo estudar a viabilidade da aplicação da técnica gráfica multidimensional conhecida por “h-plot” para identificar principais variáveis que resultaram em maior contribuição na dispersão dos dados. Em consonância com os resultados obtidos e discutidos neste trabalho, recomendou-se que os gráficos h-plots são viáveis de serem aplicados como um método alternativo no que se refere à identificação e agrupamento das variáveis.
