Celadon glazes have been investigated by means of ordinary X-ray fluorescence analysis, and X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectra using synchrotron radiation. The tentative glazes are prepared by mixing raw celadon materials of Masuda feldspar, limestone, quartz, and extra-added Fe2O3 of about 1wt% at thermal treatment till about 1300 °C. It is found that the glaze-colors strongly depend on the Fe2O3 amount and the high-temperature treatment under oxidizing and deoxidizing in the used kiln. Especially, the characteristic color of blue-green, white-green-brown, and white-blue-green result from complex hybridized 3d5L and 3d6L bands. The 3d6L hybridization is induced by an electronic exchange interaction between an empty 3d6 orbital of Fe ions and an occupied 2p orbital of surrounding O ions in the (SiO2 - Al2O3 - CaO) basic complex ceramics of glass-state under the deoxidizing thermal treatment.Esmaltes celadon foram investigados por meio de análise de fluorescência de raios X, e difração de raios X e espectros de absorção de raios X usando radiação síncrotron. Os esmaltes foram preparados por mistura de matérias-primas de celadon de feldspato Masuda, calcita, quartzo e 1 peso% a mais de Fe2O3 com tratamento térmico até 1300 °C. Foi verificado que as cores dos esmaltes dependem fortemente do teor de Fe2O3 e do tratamento térmico a alta temperatura sob atmosfera oxidante e desoxidante. As cores características verde azulada, marron esverdeada esbranquecida resultam das bandas de hibridização complexa 3d5L and 3d6L. A hibridização 3d6L é induzida por interação de troca eletrônica entre o orbital vazio 3d6 e íons Fe e um orbital 2p ocupado com íons oxigênio vizinhos nas cerâmicas complexas básicas (SiO2 - Al2O3 - CaO) no estado vítreo sob tratamento térmico desoxidante.

HIZEN celadons produced at Arita and Imari areas in Japan from 1630's to 1790's (Edo period) have been investigated by means of X-ray fluorescence analysis, and X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectra using synchrotron radiation. It is found that, in the HIZEN celadons, the color brightness of the celadon glazes depends on the structural property of the raw basic ceramics taken at Imaizumi (Arita) and Ohkwachi (Imari), where the former is mainly Quartz-SiO2, and the later is Sanidine ((K,Na)Si3O8). It is confirmed that CaCO3 of natural wood ash added artificially into the raw celadon ceramics makes a glassy glaze on the surface of the basic body of the HIZEN celadons. Transition-metal ions (Cr, Cu, Zn) of very small amount are detected in the celadon glazes, in addition to Fe and Mn of small amount. It is considered that Cu and Cr are related to the color brightness of green-brown and blue-green in the HIZEN celadon glazes, respectively.Celadons Hizen produzidos nas áreas de Arita e Imari no Japão nos anos de 1630 a 1790 (período Edo) foram investigados por meio de análise de fluorescência de raios X, difração de raios X e espectros de absorção usando radiação síncrotron. Foi descoberto que nos celadons Hizen o brilho na coloração dos esmaltes celadon depende da propriedade estrutural da matéria-prima cerâmica extraída em Imaizumi (Arita) e Ohkwachi (Imari), onde a primeira é principalmente quartzo-SiO2, e a última é um feldspato ((K,Na) Si3O8). Foi confirmado que CaCO3 da cinza da madeira natural adicionada artificialmente na matéria-prima cerâmica celadon produz um esmalte vítreo na superfície do corpo básico dos celadons Hizen. Uma quantidade muito pequena de íons de metal de transição (Cr, Cu, Zn) foi detectada nos esmaltes de celadons, alem de pequeno teor de Fe e Mn. Considera-se que Cu e Cr estão relacionados com o brilho na coloração verde-marron e azul-verde nos esmaltes do celadon Hizen, respectivamente.

O Ministério da Saúde instituiu o Programa Nacional de Triagem Neonatal através da Portaria nº. 822/GM, incluindo a pesquisa das hemoglobinopatias nos recém-nascidos. No Paraná, é realizada pela Fundação Ecumênica de Proteção ao Excepcional. Determinou-se a prevalência da hemoglobina S em homozigose, heterozigose e Sbeta-talassemia no estado. O sangue coletado em papel filtro foi examinado por focalização isoelétrica e cromatografia líquida de alta precisão (HPLC). De janeiro de 2002 a dezembro de 2004, foram triados 548.810 recém-nascidos e detectados 21 recém-nascidos com os resultados FS, dois FSA e/ou FS e quatro FSA. Após exames confirmatórios aos seis meses de idade, 12 foram definidos como anemia falciforme, com prevalência de 2,2:100 mil recém-nascidos; a interação Sbeta-talassemia foi confirmada em quinze (2,7:100 mil recém-nascidos); e 8.321 recém-nascidos foram diagnosticados como heterozigotos para HbS (1.500:100 mil recém-nascidos). A prevalência da HbS no Paraná é menor do que nas regiões Centro-Oeste, Norte e Nordeste do país. Origem étnica da população, óbitos fetais e casamentos preferenciais podem estar contribuindo para não haver maior número de homozigotos no estado. A interação Sbeta-talassemia sugere presença de povos euro-mediterrâneos na miscigenação dessa população.The Brazilian Ministry of Health created the National Neonatal Screening Program under ruling no. 822/2001, including neonatal screening for hemoglobinopathies. In the State of Paraná, neonatal screening is conducted by the Ecumenical Foundation for the Protection of the Handicapped. The prevalence rates were determined for homozygous and heterozygous hemoglobin S and Sbeta-thalassemia. Blood samples drawn on filter paper were examined by isoelectric focusing (IEF) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). From January 2002 to December 2004, 548,810 newborns were screened, with the detection of 21 with FS, two FSA/FS, and four FSA. After confirmatory tests at six months of age, 12 were defined as sickle-cell anemia, or a prevalence of 2.2:100,000 newborns; Sbeta-thalassemia was confirmed in 15 (2.7:100,000 newborns); and 8,321 newborns were diagnosed as heterozygous HbS (1,500:100,000 newborns). HbS prevalence in Paraná (in southern Brazil) is lower than in the Central-West, North, and Northeast of the country. Ethnic origin of the population, fetal deaths, and non-random procreation may contribute to the relatively low number of homozygous individuals in the State. Sbeta-thalassemia interaction suggests the presence of Euro-Mediterranean peoples in this population's miscegenation.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of Justicia acuminatissima , or Amazonian Sara Tudo , on renal hemodynamics, oxidative profile, and renal histology in rats with ischemic acute kidney injury., Method: Preclinical assay with adult male Wistar rats, weighing from 250 g to 350 g, distributed into Sham, ischemia, and ischemia + Sara Tudo groups. Hemodynamic parameters, renal function, oxidative stress, and renal histology were evaluated., Results: Pretreatment with Sara Tudo reduced the functional injury, which was shown by the increase in creatinine clearance and thiols; reduction of oxidative markers, renal vascular resistance, and tubulointerstitial injury in the renal tissue; and the significant improvement in renal blood flow., Conclusion: The renoprotection provided by Justicia acuminatissima , or Sara Tudo , in cases of ischemic acute kidney injury was characterized by a marked improvement in renal function, reducing the oxidative injury, and impacting on renal histology positively.

Objective: To assess the effect of the antibiotic Gentamicin in an experimental model in the presence of Diabetes Mellitus through renal function and oxidative profile., Method: Adult male Wistar rats were distributed into groups: Citrate; Gentamicin (Genta), (intraperitoneal, i.p. gentamicin, 100 mg/kg of body weight, once a day,5 days); DM (60 mg/kg of STZ (Streptozotocin), single dose, intravenously, i.v., diluted in citrate buffer); and DM+Genta. Physiological parameters, renal function (creatinine clearance), oxidative damage (peroxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances - urinary TBARS) and renal hemodynamics were evaluated., Results: The Diabetes Mellitus group presented chronic hyperglycemia associated with loss of body weight, polyphagia, polydipsia and polyuria, in addition to reduced renal function and with an increase in oxidative metabolite excretion. Administration of gentamicin induced a reduction in renal blood flow and increased renal vascular resistance in healthy rats. The association of Diabetes Mellitus with gentamicin resulted in an additional reduction in renal function and elevation of oxidative metabolites, with increased renal vascular resistance., Conclusion: The existence of Diabetes Mellitus resulted in an elevation of gentamicin nephrotoxicity, thus confirming the risk factor for drug nephrotoxicity.

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant action of N-acetylcysteine and diosmin-hesperidin in an experimental model of sepsis-induced acute kidney injury in rats., Methods: The study used 20 Wistar adult male rats divided into the following groups: control (laparotomy with no induction of abdominal sepsis), sepsis (experimental model of sepsis with cecal ligation and puncture), N-acetylcysteine + sepsis and diosmin-hesperidin + sepsis. The evaluation contemplated physiological parameters (temperature, glycemia, and average blood pressure), kidney function (creatinine clearance), oxidative stress (urinary peroxides) and kidney histology., Results: The animals submitted to cecal ligation and puncture (sepsis) presented lower body temperature, lower average blood pressure, reduced creatinine clearance and increased urinary hydrogen peroxide levels. Treatment with diosmin-hesperidin improved kidney function and led to a reduction in the excretion of oxidative metabolites., Conclusion: The present study highlighted the protective antioxidant action of diosmin-hesperidin in the experimental model of sepsis-induced acute kidney injury.

Objective:: to evaluate the nursing workload in intensive care patients with acute kidney injury (AKI)., Method:: A quantitative study, conducted in an intensive care unit, from April to August of 2015. The Nursing Activities Score (NAS) and Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) were used to measure nursing workload and to classify the stage of AKI, respectively., Results:: A total of 190 patients were included. Patients who developed AKI (44.2%) had higher NAS when compared to those without AKI (43.7% vs 40.7%), p <0.001. Patients with stage 1, 2 and 3 AKI showed higher NAS than those without AKI. A relationship was identified between stage 2 and 3 with those without AKI (p = 0.002 and p <0.001)., Conclusion:: The NAS was associated with the presence of AKI, the score increased with the progression of the stages, and it was associated with AKI, stage 2 and 3., Objetivo:: avaliar a carga de trabalho de enfermagem em pacientes de terapia intensiva com lesão renal aguda (LRA)., Método:: estudo quantitativo, em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva, no período de abril a agosto de 2015. O Nursing Activities Score (NAS) e o Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) foram utilizados para medir a carga de trabalho de enfermagem e classificar o estágio da LRA, respectivamente., Resultados:: foram incluídos 190 pacientes. Os pacientes que desenvolveram LRA (44,2%) possuíam NAS superiores quando comparados aos sem LRA (43,7% vs 40,7%), p<0,001. Os pacientes com LRA nos estágios 1, 2 e 3 de LRA demonstraram NAS superiores aos sem LRA, houve relação entre os estágios 2 e 3 com os sem LRA, p=0,002 e p<0,001., Conclusão:: o NAS apresentou associação com a existência de LRA, visto que seu valor aumenta com a progressão dos estágios, tendo associação com os estágios 2 e 3 de LRA.

Objective To evaluate the effect of diosmin and hesperidin flavonoids in the prevention of amphotericin B nephrotoxicity, through an experimental model on rats. Method Adult, male Wistar rats were distributed into the following groups: saline; diosmin hesperidin (animals that received 50 mg/kg of diosmin hesperidin, drinking water, for ten days); amphotericin B (animals that received 15 mg/kg/day of amphotericin B through intraperitoneal treatment for five days); amphotericin B+diosmin hesperidin. Renal function, fractional excretion of sodium; potassium and magnesium and oxidative metabolites were evaluated. Results Treatment with amphotericin B reduced renal function, as shown by the clearance of creatinine, increased tubular function markers and fractional excretion of sodium, potassium, magnesium and oxidative metabolites. Pre-treatment with diosmin hesperidin ameliorated clearance of creatinine and reduced tubular and oxidative injury. Conclusion Administration of amphotericin B resulted in reduction of renal function with tubular injury, and diosmin hesperidin showing an antioxidant protective effect on the kidneys.

Objective: Evaluating the effect of preconditioning with simvastatin in acute kidney injury induced by sepsis., Method: Male adult Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: SHAM (control); SHAM+Statin (0.5 mg/kg simvastatin, orally); Sepsis (cecal puncture ligation - CPL); Sepsis+Statin. Physiological parameters, peritoneal fluid culture, renal function, oxidative metabolites, severity of acute kidney injury and animal survival were evaluated., Results: The treatment with simvastatin in induced sepsis showed elevation of creatinine clearance with attenuation of generation of oxidative metabolites, lower severity of acute kidney injury and reduced mortality., Conclusion: This investigation confirmed the renoprotection with antioxidant principle of the simvastatin in acute kidney injury induced by sepsis in an experimental model.

Objective: To assess the diagnostic and prognostic efficacy of urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin in patients admitted to an intensive care unit., Methods: Longitudinal, prospective cohort study conducted in a cardiology intensive care unit. The participants were divided into groups with and without acute kidney injury and were followed from admission to the intensive care unit until hospital discharge or death. Serum creatinine, urine output and urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin were measured 24 and 48 hours after admission., Results: A total of 83 patients admitted to the intensive care unit for clinical reasons were assessed, most being male (57.8%). The participants were divided into groups without acute kidney injury (N=18), with acute kidney injury (N=28) and with severe acute kidney injury (N=37). Chronic diseases, mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy were more common in the groups with acute kidney injury and severe acute kidney injury, and those groups exhibited longer intensive care unit stay and hospital stay and higher mortality. Serum creatinine did not change significantly in the group with acute kidney injury within the first 24 hours of admission to the intensive care unit, although, urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin was high in the groups with acute kidney injury and severe acute kidney injury (p<0.001). Increased urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin was associated with death., Conclusion: An increase in urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin precedes variations in serum creatinine in patients with acute kidney injury and may be associated with death.

The aim of the study was to characterize the cell damage mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of cytotoxicity of polymyxin B in proximal tubular cells (LLC - PK1) and discuss about the nurses interventions to identify at risk patients and consider prevention or treatment of nephrotoxicity acute kidney injury. This is a quantitative experimental in vitro study, in which the cells were exposed to 375μM polymyxin B sulfate concentration. Cell viability was determined by exclusion of fluorescent dyes and morphological method with visualization of apoptotic bodies for fluorescence microscopy. Cells exposed to polymyxin B showed reduced viability, increased number of apoptotic cells and a higher concentration of the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. The administration of polymyxin B in vitro showed the need for actions to minimize adverse effects such as nephrotoxicity.

Experimental animal models offer possibilities of physiology knowledge, pathogenesis of disease and action of drugs that are directly related to quality nursing care. This integrative review describes the current state of the instrumental and ethical aspects of experimental research with animal models, including the main recommendations of ethics committees that focus on animal welfare and raises questions about the impact of their findings in nursing care. Data show that, in Brazil, the progress in ethics for the use of animals for scientific purposes was consolidated with Law No. 11.794/2008 establishing ethical procedures, attending health, genetic and experimental parameters. The application of ethics in handling of animals for scientific and educational purposes and obtaining consistent and quality data brings unquestionable contributions to the nurse, as they offer subsidies to relate pathophysiological mechanisms and the clinical aspect on the patient.

Sepsis associated with multiple organ failure such as acute kidney injury (AKI) shows a high mortality rate in critically ill patients. This study investigated the sepsis induced AKI in experimental models. Adult, males, Wistar rats divided into the following groups: Control-surgical control and Sepsis-sepsis induction for the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Physiological parameters (rectal temperature, mean arterial pressure-MAP, serum glucose and urinary flow); renal function (creatinine clearance); oxidative stress (urinary peroxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances-TBARS) and kidney histological analysis were evaluated. That study concludes that sepsis induces AKI by endothelial injury with hemodynamic dysfunction, release of inflammatory mediators and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by tubular cells, in an association of renal vasoconstriction due to hemodynamic and inflammatory disturbances.

Background and Objectives: The concern of facing difficult airways brought the need of developing predictive testing for difficult intubation. Those tests were developed primarily for adult populations. In pediatric patients studies always focus on patients with congenital malformation, polytraumatized, and newborns. The objective of the present study was to determine the applicability of the predictive test used more often in adults, the Mallampati index, in patients 4 to 8 years old, correlating it with the Cormack-Lehane index., Methods: One hundred and eight patients 4 to 8 years of age, ASA I, without any type of congenital malformation, genetic syndromes or cognitive deficits were evaluated. The Mallampati index was applied to patients during the pre-anesthetic evaluation. Evaluation of the Cormack-Lehane index was performed after anesthetic induction. A p<0.05 was considered significant., Results: The Mallampati index showed a significant correlation with the Cormack-Lehane index. The sensitivity and specificity of the Mallampati index were 75.8% and 96.2% respectively, but the sensitivity showed a wide confidence interval., Conclusions: The Mallampati index was proven to be applicable in children 4 to 8 years old., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Editora Ltda. Objective: Ischemic acute kidney injury (iLRA), with multifatorial cause, presents alarming morbidity and mortality. Statin, HMG-CoA inhibition reductase has shown a renoprotective effect, with antioxidant, antiinflamatory and vascular actions. The heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) can be involved in these pleitropic effects of statin on the renal function. This study was performed in order to evaluate if the renoprotective effect of the statin is a heme mechanism of protection in rats., Methods: The ischemic model was reproduced by through clamping the bilateral renal pedicles for 30 minutes followed by reperfusion. Adult Wistar rats, weighting from 250-300g, were divided into the following groups: SHAM (control); Ischemia (30 minutes renal ischemia); Ischemia+Statin (sinvastatin 0.5mg/kg,orally (v.o.) for 3 days); Ischemia+Hemin (Hemin, 1.0mg/100g, intraperitoneal (i.p.), 24 hours before surgery); Ischemia+SnPP (SnPP 2μmol/kg, i.p., 24 hours before surgery ); Ischemia+Statin+Hemin; Ischemia+Statin+SnPP. RF (clearance of creatinine, Jaffé method), urinary peroxides (UP), urinary osmolality (UO) and immunohistochemical for ED-1 were evaluated., Results: Results showed that sinvastatin ameliorated RF, urinary osmolality, reduced the UP excrection and the macrophage infiltration in rats submitted to renal ischemia. The inducer of HO-1 and its association with sinvastatin induced a similar pattern of improvement of renal function., Conclusion: the study confirmed the renoprotective effect of the statins on renal function, with antioxidant and antiinflamatory actions, and it suggests that this effect can have an interface with the heme system of renal protection.

Background and Objectives: The Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is the most serious complication of rhabdomyolysis. In this syndrome, the delivery of heme pigment induces an injury that distinguishes itself by glomerular vasoconstriction and direct cellular toxicity with oxidative component. The renoprotection with antioxidants has demonstrated satisfactory effect. The proanthocyanidins are natural antioxidants found in the grape seed extract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant effect of Vitis vinifera (grape seed extract) on the renal function of rats submitted to the injury by rhabdomyolysis., Methods: Wistar rats, male, adults, weight ranging from 250-300g were used. The AKI was induced by intramuscular administration of glycerol 50%. The animals were distributed in 4 groups: Saline group (6 mL/kg of NaCl 0.9% intraperitoneal once a day), Glycerol group (6 mL/kg) of intramuscular glycerol each femoral region received 3 mL/kg of glycerol, once a day), Vitis vinifera group (3 mg/kg/day v.o by 5 days) and Glycerol + Vitis vinifera by 5 days before glycerol)., Results: Renal function (RF-creatinine clearance) and oxidative profile (urinary peroxides-FOX-2 and MDA-TBARS) were evaluted. The Glycerol group treated with Vitis vinifera has shown improvements in RF and reduction levels of lipid peroxidation., Conclusion: The results of this study have confirmed the antioxidant protection of Vitis vinifera in AKI induced by glycerol.
