Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior A indústria de polpa celulósica possui um grande potencial poluidor hídrico. O tratamento por lodos ativados é o mais utilizado na indústria e gera expressiva quantidade de lodo biológico. O gerenciamento do lodo pode ser considerado como um dos maiores custos operacionais de uma estação de tratamento dos efluentes (ETE). A geração de lodo biológico pode ser reduzida através da manipulação dos fatores abióticos do reator biológico e a aeração prévia dos efluentes tem sido indicada como uma forma para se alcançar tal redução. Há uma lacuna no conhecimento sobre os mecanismos químicos e biológicos que ocorrem quando o efluente é previamente aerado e como induzem à minimização da geração do lodo. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar os efeitos da aeração prévia dos efluentes de fábrica de celulose kraft branqueada em um sistema de lodos ativados na eficiência de remoção de matéria orgânica, na geração de lodo biológico e na microbiota do sistema. Foram construídos, em laboratório dois sistemas de lodos ativados constituídos por dois seletores biológicos com tempo de detenção hidráulico (TDH) igual a 42 minutos, um tanque de aeração com TDH igual a 8,3 h. Um dos sistemas foi provido de uma unidade de pré-aeração (UPA) com TDH igual a 42 minutos. Para avaliar a eficiência do tratamento, foi considerada a remoção de matéria orgânica (DQO S e DBO 5 ). Para comparar a produção de lodo, foi realizado um balanço de massa dos sólidos suspensos voláteis (SSV). Para a caracterização da microbiota da UPA e dos reatores, foi realizada análises de diversidade microbiana do domínio Bacteria. Os resultados mostraram que a unidade de pré-aeração foi capaz de remover 25% da DQO solúvel e 32% da DBO 5 . Essa remoção não influenciou na eficiência global do sistema, já que a remoção de matéria orgânica global dos sistemas com e sem a UPA não variaram significativamente. O sistema com a UPA apresentou uma geração de lodo biológico 29% menor que o sistema sem a UPA, mas não foi observado crescimento expressivo de protozoários e metazoários neste sistema, refutando a hipótese inicial de predação. Com relação à população microbiana, foi observada uma especialização da comunidade na unidade de pré-aeração, com aumento da abundância dos gêneros Clostridium, Acetivibrio e Bacteroides, que estão relacionados com a degradação de compostos presentes nos efluentes da indústria de polpa celulósica. O aumento da abundância nas unidades do sistema com a UPA dos gêneros Bdellovibrio, Microbulbifer, Luteimonas e Lysobacter, sendo estes relacionados com a micro predação, não justificou redução da geração de lodo, pois a diferença de abundância foi baixa. Esta redução pode ser melhor explicada quando avaliado o metabolismo dos microrganismos. Na UPA, um mecanismo muito presente foi a fermentação realizada pelos microrganismos anaeróbios aerotolerantes, que por serem menos eficiente que a respiração aeróbia, geram menos biomassa além de gerar gases, diminuindo a disponibilidade de carbono no sistema. Comparando-se a microbiota nos sistemas avaliados, concluiu-se que a unidade de pré-aeração foi capaz de alterar a microbiota e os processos biológicos no sistema com a UPA, modificando os processos bioquímicos, além de ter sido capaz de prevenir o surgimento do intumescimento filamentoso do lodo, demonstrando ser vantajosa contribuindo para a diminuição dos custos com tratamento de lodo biológico em estações de tratamento de efluentes. The pulp industry has a high water pollution. Activated sludge is the most used effluent treatment method in the sector and generates significant amounts of biological sludge. Sludge management is considered the highest operating cost of an activated sludge effluent treatment plant (ETP). Biological sludge generation can be reduced by manipulating the abiotic factors of the biological reactor and prior aeration of effluents has been indicated as a way to achieve such a reduction. There is little knowledge about the chemical and biological mechanisms that occur when the effluent is previously aerated and how they induce the minimization of sludge generation. The present work aimed to evaluate the effects of previous aeration of bleached kraft pulp mills effluents in an activated sludge system on the efficiency of organic matter removal, on the biological sludge generation and on the microbial community. Two lab-scale activated sludge systems consisted of two biological selectors with hydraulic retention time (HRT) equal to 42 minutes, an aeration tank with HRT equal to 8.3 h were assembled. One of these systems was provided with a pre-aeration unit (UPA) with TDH equal to 42 minutes. To evaluate the efficiency of the treatment, organic matter removal (soluble COD and BOD 5 ) was considered. In order to compare the sludge production, a mass balance of volatile suspended solids (VSS) was performed. For the characterization of the microbiota of the UPA and the reactors, analyzes of microbial diversity of the Bacteria domain were carried out. The results showed that the pre-aeration unit was able to remove 25% of COD and 32% of BOD 5 . This removal did not influence the overall efficiency of the system, since the global removal of organic matter from the systems with and without UPA did not vary significantly. The system with UPA obtained a 29% lower biological sludge generation than the system without UPA, but no significant growth of protozoa and metazoa was observed in this system, refuting the initial hypothesis of predation. Concerning the microbial population, a community specialization was observed in the UPA, with an increase in the abundance of the Clostridium, Acetivibrio and Bacteroides genera, which are related to the degradation of compounds present in the effluents of the pulp industry. The increase of abundance in the units of the system with the UPA of the genera Bdellovibrio, Microbulbifer, Luteimonas and Lysobacter, related to the micro predation, did not justify the reduction of the sludge generation, since the difference of abundance was low. This reduction can be better explained when evaluating the metabolism of microorganisms. In the UPA, an important observed mechanism was the fermentation carried out by aerotolerant anaerobic microorganisms, which, being less efficient than the aerobic respiration, produces less biomass, reducing the availability of carbon in the system. Comparing the microbiota in the evaluated systems, it was concluded that the pre-aeration unit was able to alter the microbiota and the biological processes in the system with the UPA, modifying the food chain and the biochemical processes, besides being able to prevent the appearance of filamentous bulking of the sludge, demonstrating to be advantageous contributing to the reduction of the costs of treatment of biological sludge in effluent treatment plants.
