This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association of variables representative of the sociodemographic profile, working hours, and general health status of long-haul truck drivers with their reported sleep regimen. Questionnaires provided by the Transportation Social Service and the National Transportation Learning Service, in which data were collected from professional truckers aged ≥ 45 years, were analyzed. The results found allow us to infer that the sleep profile of these ground freight transportation workers seems to correlate negatively with general health (prevalence of arterial hypertension and drug use) and the number of working hours per day.

Background: Musculoskeletal symptoms are common and affect people of all ages and may occur in one (single-site) or in several regions of the body (multisite). Obesity may be associated with these symptoms. Objective: To evaluate the association between obesity and single-site and multisite symptoms in a working population. Materials and Methods: This is a crosssectional study with white and blue collar workers from several economic sectors. 1,233 workers were evaluated and 644 composed the sample. Personal and occupational characteristics were assessed using a sociodemographic questionnaire. Musculoskeletal symptoms were identified using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Symptom Questionnaire (NMQ). The Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated and dichotomized in obese (>30 kg/m² ) and non-obese (<30 kg/m2 ). Data was descriptively analyzed and through logistic regression in the SPSS program. Results: There was no association between symptoms and obesity, except for the ankle/foot region in male workers. Conclusions: Obesity was associated with the presence of ankle/feet symptoms in men. This association may indicate mechanical overload in the region during activities performed in the standing posture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low back pain is a common complaint among the world’s population. Students in the health sector are susceptible to it due to their routines with a heavy study load. The objective of this study was to analyze health students’ understanding of coping attitudes and the red flags of low back pain. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study carried out at a public university in northeastern Brazil. Between October 2022 and June 2023, a low back pain education training program was carried out, with the application of an online questionnaire through the Google Forms tool, in pre-test and post-test formats, containing six sections of questions from semi-structured questionnaires, interposed by the education program on the subject. The variables investigated were sociodemographic data, prevalence of low back pain, coping attitudes and red flags. RESULTS: A total of 260 students participated in the research, most of whom were in the first semester (61.5%), aged 21 years or older (51.2%), and female (61.2%). The majority had no knowledge about coping attitudes (73.1%) and red flags for low back pain (94.2%) in the pre-test, but acquired it in the post-test (91.9% and 78.5%, respectively). The McNemar inferential test showed that the approach to the topic influenced the appropriate conduct required in the post-test (p

This study aims to develop factors and indicators of aspects that shape nurses' quality of life. It was conducted using a cross-sectional design, while the population consisted of nurses working in the inpatient ward totaling 915. The sample size was determined by the rule of thumb criteria which produced 270 nurses. The samples were selected using the simple random sampling technique, while data was collected with a questionnaire that had been tested for its validity and reliability. The endogenous variable hypothesis test was carried out by SEM-PLS analysis. The results showed that health aspects affect nurses' quality of life, as physical health sharpens engagement in professional activities and social relationships. Spiritual influence on nurses' quality of life, as well as the ability to withstand stress, anxiety, and depression, depend on the value of trust in God. Furthermore, the workplace standard affects the quality of life, while job satisfaction influences the achievement of welfare. The work environment is the main stressor for workers about job satisfaction and self-actualization. The Indonesian government needs to formulate policies to support work environment management in health service agencies, as well as facilitate the Indonesian Nurses Association to improve nurses' quality of life and increase their competence.

Objective: to interpret young nursing professionals’ perceptions about the relationship between working, employment and health conditions. Method: a qualitative study with an interpretive approach regarding the work-related experiences of 15 young nurses, who took part in the research through voluntary snowball sampling. The data from the interviews and the focus group were analyzed to reach an approximation to the realities inherent to the nurses’ work life. Results: the relevant study findings pointed out that work precariousness is a characteristic feature in the population group, mainly related to hiring modalities and to wages. According to the participants, the psychosocial working conditions (which were intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic) were the ones that caused the most effects on their mental and physical health. Conclusion: from the young nurses’ perspective, this study reports how the macro- and micro-structural working conditions and their relationship with health are perceived, pointing out the key elements to devise interventions focused on life paths that foster decent and healthy work postulates in their work environments, as well as actions to prevent injuries or harms to nurses’ health.

Abstract: This article aimed to assess the temporal trend of work-related mental and behavioral disorders in Brazil, as well as to measure the effect of changes in the implementation of the Social Security Technical Nexus (NTP, acronym in Portuguese) on the incidence of these disorders among beneficiaries of the General Social Security System (RGPS, acronym in Portuguese). It is an analysis of time series and interrupted time series with data from the Brazilian Ministry of Social Security information system on cases of work-related mental and behavioral disorders from 2003 to 2019. The Prais-Winsten method was employed to calculate the annual percent change (APC) of the incidence rates for the conditions under study. The average incidence of work-related mental and behavioral disorders was 35.48 per 100,000 RGPS links during the period 2003-2019, with an increasing trend (APC = 9.67%; p = 0.033) for Brazil. Before the implementation of changes in the NTP (2003-2007), this value was 15.59, with an increasing trend (APC = 29.28%; p < 0.001), and it more than doubled (43.77) after the RGPS modified the way of establishing the nexus between illness and work (2008-2019). The post-NTP trend for work-related mental and behavioral disorders was a decrease in the country (APC = -23.73%; p < 0.001), a pattern that was repeated for all regions of the country. The findings suggest that the changes in the way of establishing the NTP between illness and work represented an advancement in the system of recording and notifying work-related mental and behavioral disorders in Brazil.

Abstract Objective: to analyze the effectiveness of auriculotherapy for decreasing anxiety and stress of perioperative nursing professionals. Method: mixed methods research, embedded experimental model. In the quantitative stage, a randomized, triple-blind clinical trial was conducted with perioperative nursing professionals, who answered a characterization questionnaire, the List of Signs and Symptoms of Stress, and the General Anxiety Disorder-GAD 7. The participants attended eight auriculotherapy sessions with semi-permanent needles. The qualitative stage was exploratory and descriptive, in which data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Data were mixed with the incorporation of qualitative findings to examine the intervention in the experimental study. Results: 13 professionals participated in the intervention group and 14 in the control group. Anxiety and stress levels decreased significantly within groups, though no statistical difference was found between groups (p>0.05). The central category, “Auriculotherapy as an intervention to treat anxiety and stress,” emerged from the qualitative data, which was subdivided into a base unit and three categories concerning the therapy’s benefits. Conclusion: applying real and sham auriculotherapy had the same effect on the participants’ anxiety and stress levels; the reports reinforced such evidence. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as auriculotherapy, are essential for recovering and promoting the health of perioperative nursing professionals. Workplace injuries constitute a serious and growing public health concern worldwide. Despite work-related injuries being highly common, especially among workers in the manufacturing industry, their growing complexities are not adequately addressed in the current literature. Therefore this study aims to investigate the association between sociodemographic, workplace, and behavioral characteristics with work-related injuries among large-scale factory workers in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to April 2020 with 457 workers selected from large-scale factories in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Survey data included sociodemographic characteristics, working and safety conditions, and behavioral factors as predictors of occupational injuries. A logistic regression model was fitted to estimate the probability of injury and identify its associated factors. The 12-month prevalence of work-related injuries was 25%. Most injuries occurred at midnight (8.8%). Factors associated with work-related injury were excessive working hours (OR = 3.26; 95%CI: 1.26-8.41), cigarette smoking (OR = 2.72; 95%CI: 1.22-6.08), and manual handling (OR = 2.30; 95%CI: 1.13-4.72). Use of personal protective equipment reduced the odds of injury (OR = 0.42; 95%CI: 0.21-0.83). Although our estimated prevalence of occupational injury was lower than that found in other studies, our findings suggest that actions on modifiable conditions must be taken to reduce the burden of workplace injuries in Ethiopia. The results could inform preparedness and policy efforts aimed at improving worker safety and health.

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) in Brazil from 2007 to 2019, examining the spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal patterns of their occurrence. An ecological time series study was conducted using spatial analysis techniques. WMSD morbidity data from 2007 to 2019 were collected from the Brazilian Information System for Notificable Diseases of the Brazilian Health Informatics Department. Incidence rates were standardized and smoothed using the local empirical Bayes’ theorem. Time trends were analyzed by segmented linear regression. Spatial analysis was performed using Moran’s univariate global (I) and local (LISA) indexes. The spatiotemporal scan statistic was used to identify high-risk spatiotemporal clusters for WMSD. A total of 93,387 cases of WMSD were recorded in Brazil. Temporal trends showed an increase in all regions except the Northeast, which remained stable. The incidence of WMSD showed a spatial dependence, with spatial and space-time clusters identified, especially in the Southeast region, overlapping the largest economic-industrial center of the country. The spatiotemporal clustering observed in one region suggests the highest level of industrial and economic development. Our findings highlight the need to implement intersectoral surveillance policies, inspect working conditions, and invest in the prevention and promotion of workers’ health.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: During the COVID-19 pandemic, health professionals have experienced a work overload that may be associated with increased pain intensity. The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency and intensity of musculoskeletal pain in the different anatomical regions reported by health professionals who worked in Intensive Care Units (ICU) during the pandemic and to investigate associations between clinical variables. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, analytical, quantitative and multicenter study carried out in six ICU between July 2021 and February 2022. The Nordic Questionnaire of Musculoskeletal Symptoms (QNSO) was used for data collection, as well as a questionnaire prepared by the researchers on sociodemographic, work and clinical data, and the visual numeric scale (VNS) for pain assessment. Analyses were carried out using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 205 health professionals. With regard to pain intensity, according to the visual analog scale (VAS), an average of 3.76 was observed. The analysis of the association between the variables indicated a greater intensity of pain in females, with a higher frequency of mild and moderate pain, age over 40, in the professional categories of nursing technicians and doctors. The presence of severe pain was associated with poor general health and shorter time in professional practice. CONCLUSION: Most of the professionals reported pain of varying intensity and in different anatomical regions, the most frequently cited being the upper back and neck. Musculoskeletal disorders are directly related to work activity, age, gender and lack of leisure time.

Objective: to analyze exposure to ergonomic risks and the occurrence of musculoskeletal pain in workers in the Hospital Cleaning Service. Method: Convergent Care Research, with data production designed using mixed methods, implemented with 149 hospital cleaning workers. The methodological strategy of the convergent parallel project was employed, using observation, photographic records, questionnaires and convergence groups. The results were integrated through joint display. Data analysis with descriptive and inferential statistics and content analysis. Results: the mixing of data highlighted the multifactorial nature of exposure to ergonomic risks (uncomfortable work postures; repetitive movements; prolonged orthostatism; use of equipment not adapted to the psychophysiological needs of workers) and musculoskeletal pain in the population investigated. The latter was prevalent in the lumbar spine, ankles or feet, wrists or hands, thoracic spine and shoulders. The concept of ergonomic risk was expanded and was influenced by the psychosocial aspects of work. Conclusion: the workers investigated are exposed to modifiable multifactorial ergonomic risks related to musculoskeletal pain. It is possible to promote innovations and teaching-learning actions to minimize them, such as the continuing education program, collectively constructed with recommendations for improvements.

ABSTRACT Objective: Compare Cardiovascular Risk between workers in Brazil and Portugal who work in the teaching context and its relationship with Lifestyle and Common Mental Disorder. Methods: Cross-sectional study that compared the cardiovascular health conditions of teaching workers in Manaus (Brazil) and Coimbra (Portugal). The odds ratio between groups was estimated. Results: The differences were: Smoking and hypercholesterolemia in participants from Portugal. Hypertension, chronic disease, increased abdominal perimeter, common mental disorder, and absence from work in Brazil. The variables with the greatest effect for high cardiovascular risk were: Country-Portugal [17.273 (95%CI1.538-193.951)], sex-male [61.577 (95%CI5.398-702.469)] and smoking [593.398 (95%CI57.330-6.142.020)]. Conclusion: The differences in risk between groups showed that participants from Portugal, men, with high blood pressure and/or smokers are the most vulnerable to having a cardiovascular event. There is a need for interventions to promote cardiovascular health in the workplace in both countries.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to assess the physical and mental components of nursing professionals’ quality of life and associate them with individual, health and work characteristics. Methods: cross-sectional research, with nursing professionals from a university hospital in São Paulo. Own questionnaire and validated instruments were applied. Results: the overall quality of life was compromised. The physical component was lower in relation to low family income and among those who perceived greater control/pressure at work, and better for those who practiced physical activity and had support of leader and organization. The mental component was lower in professionals who reported dissatisfaction with work, worse self-rated physical health and were older. Scores for both components reduced due to work-related illnesses, worse work ability and increased daytime sleepiness. Conclusions: quality of life was statistically associated with controllable institutional factors and individual resources that, except age, can be promoted.

Objective: To analyze the work process of Primary Health Care nurses in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and interpreted in light of the relevant literature. Results: The fear of lacking personal protective equipment was evidenced and the refusal of care in the absence of these. Teleconsultation was used as a means of nursing care, which showed limitations such as invasion of nurses' privacy, extension of the workday and overload. The health care of women and children was prioritized. Also, there was an effort to host suspected and acute cases of COVID-19. There was work overload and accumulation of functions. However, lessons were learned, such as valuing protective measures such as hand hygiene. Conclusion: The need to create and validate new protocols that strengthen nursing care is inferred, as well as the importance of stimulating health policies to control Health-Related Infections. PROFESSIONAL competence , *MEDICAL personnel , *MENTAL work , *MENTAL health , *THEMATIC analysis - Abstract
The aim of this research is to analyze the social representations of workers in management positions regarding the competencies to address work-related mental health (WRMH), and how these representations can contribute to or hinder the development of these professional competencies among primary healthcare workers in this field. This is a qualitative, analytic-descriptive research. Nine semi-structured interviews were carried out, with occupants of management, coordination, or technical responsibility positions. The interviews were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results show to different representations about competencies and SMRT among the interviewees, the use of active methodologies for the development of competencies and limitations to the development and mobilization of competencies in WRMH due to the representations of the managers and the absence of work process transformations. The absence of the WRMH theme in the ongoing devices and work processes potentiates the difficulties in this area. These results indicate the need for actions that favor the understanding of health processes in a broad way, the perception of WRMH as a collective responsibility, the delinking of the notion of competencies exclusively to individual attributes and the development of protocols and instruments for investigating the causal link between mental health and work. HAZARDOUS substance exposure , *WORK-related injuries , *INTERPERSONAL conflict , *WORK environment , *JOB stress - Abstract
This research aimed to analyze the work in labor associations and cooperatives located in northeastern Brazil. This is a qualitative study involving twelve institutions, investigated through a questionnaire and six interviews with associates. The answers to the questionnaire were analyzed using the QCA (Comparative Qualitative Analysis) method, and the interviews were conducted using the content analysis technique. The importance of the support provided by social actors external to the enterprises was highlighted, but also a negative evaluation of the management. The creation of these enterprises is configured as an opportunity for work and income for most of the interviewees. However, there was a lack of concern for the health of associates and the necessary care to reduce the risk of accidents, including frequent exposure to hazardous and contaminated materials, as well as uncertainties, stresses in the work environment, excessive workloads and interpersonal conflicts. The latter can contribute to occupational accidents and illnesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Workers’ functioning is related to the environmental conditions that influence their activities, favoring or hindering their fulfilment. The Work Rehabilitation Questionnaire (WORQ) was based on a core set of the Classification of Functioning (ICF) to assess workers. It has a validated Portuguese version for use with active Brazilian workers but it only assesses function body limitations, activities, and participation. This study developed a questionnaire to assess environmental barriers at work following the WORQ format and tested its reliability. This study reached a consensus (10 professionals and 11 workers) to choose environmental categories in the CIF core set that originated the WORQ to be integrated into the questionnaire. This research selected elements if at least 85% of participants reported it. Categories were transformed into questions. For reliability analysis, the questionnaire was applied to a random sample of 123 active workers at a public university in Brazil. The questionnaire had 20 questions based on the ICF core set for vocational rehabilitation and WORQ. This study evaluated its reliability, finding an r=0.855 (test-retest) and Cronbach’s alpha=0.936 (internal consistency). This study developed an ICF-based questionnaire to assess environmental barriers in the workplace. The analysis of psychometric characteristics showed strong test-retest reliability and the internal consistency of the instrument.

Abstract Intramuscular hemangiomas (IHs) are benign soft-tissue tumors that represent less than 1% of all hemangiomas. This clinical entity is rarely considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of musculoskeletal pain. A healthy 38-year-old woman presented to our office with complaint of left omalgia, with 8 months of evolution, limiting her daily activities. She reported the appearance of tumefaction in the previous 4 months. She was medicated with analgesic and antiinflammatory drugs with no clinical improvement. The objective examination showed limitation of left shoulder abduction (0–90°). The patient underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in which a well-circumscribed nodular formation was detected in the deltoid muscle. Then, she underwent a biopsy, which confirmed the diagnosis of hemangioma. The patient was referred for sclerotherapy. Intramuscular hemangiomas are usually observed in young patients. The gold-standard examination for diagnosis is MRI, which often forestalls the need for a biopsy. In many cases, IHs are asymptomatic and tend to involute over time. Despite the low frequency of this clinical entity, it is important to place it as a diagnostic hypothesis in cases of chronic pain of the limbs in young patients with poor therapeutic response to antiinflammatory drugs and analgesia.

Currently, it is increasingly evident that health workers are prone to occupational stress. Thus, this article aimed to evaluate the prevalence and sources of occupational stress in workers of a public health center in the City of Nampula – Mozambique. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative study, which applied questionnaires on sociodemographic and labor data and on stress in health professionals to 100 workers of both sexes and from different areas of activity. The descriptive analysis carried out using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences indicated that 33 workers from the total sample indicated that work often causes them stress, influenced mainly by career/remuneration, and family problems. Faced with this identified situation, it seems necessary to design and implement workers health care policies, as well as carrying out future research to improve knowledge about occupational stress and coping strategies.

The present work aims to identify the predictive power of psychosocial factors at work (work and family conflict, bullying at work, work stress), and sociodemographic and health variables for the outcome of psychological distress in public health professionals during the pandemic. It is a quantitative study, with a sample composed of 478 public health professionals during COVID-19. The instruments, applied online, were sociodemographic, work and health data sheet; questionnaire on psychosocial risk factors at work; the Work-Family Conflict Scale, and the Clinical Outcome Routine Evaluation- Outcome Measures (CORE-OM). Data analysis was executed by multiple linear regression. Work-family conflict was the main cause of psychological distress, followed by bullying at work, family-work interaction, and prior psychiatric/psychological diagnosis. These variables predicted 37.8% of the sample's psychological distress. It should be noted that the pandemic may have contributed to the escalation of existing symptoms. These psychosocial risk factors, particularly work-family conflict, should be considered when planning interventions that aim to promote mental health.

The numbers on oncological illnesses are growing, and cancer is the main public health problem in the world. Work is one of the dimensions of life that change in the process of illness and cancer treatment. The municipal public servant with cancer diagnosis undergoes forensic medical evaluation and may have medical restrictions, professional rehabilitation and even retirement due to permanent disability. This article is a case study with a qualitative approach and its objective is to describe and problematize the Ressignificar Program, created and implemented in a Management Department of a municipality in Baixada Santista, which provides interdisciplinary monitoring of civil servants diagnosed with neoplasia under treatment. Documentary analysis and construction of narratives based on the experiences of six civil servants participating in the Program were carried out. Statistics show a high prevalence of breast cancer in the female population. Among those monitored, 66,07% perform monitoring through periodic examinations, making it possible to return to work, and 33,92% remain in treatment, away from work activities. The medical leaves are long. The narratives reveal experiences of illness, relationship with work, impact of medical leaves and appreciation of the Ressignificar Project. The results show the need for dedication to treatment, the centrality of work (identity, socialization and sustenance) and the fear of uselessness. Readaptation represents a challenge that can be an opportunity. The program has been well accepted, shown to be efficient and relevant, providing civil servants with both institutional and personalized treatment. Other municipalities, public and private institutions are expected to create similar programs.

Method: a randomized controlled clinical trial, carried out with nursing professionals from a university hospital. The intervention group (n=58) performed cardiovascular biofeedback, and the control (n=57) performed an online puzzle without self-monitoring, totaling nine meetings over three weeks. The outcome was assessed using the Stress Symptoms and Work-Related Stress scales, and the biological marker heart rate variability. The generalized estimating equations method was used. Results: the intervention had no effect on self-reported instruments (p>0.050). However, there was an effect of time (p

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate working conditions in nursing when facing the Covid-19 pandemic, in light of aspects of precarious work. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with 131 nursing workers who worked against Covid-19 in hospitals in Alagoas State, Northeast Brazil. Data were collected online, using a workers’ health assessment questionnaire. The Chi -Square or Fisher’s Exact test and logistic regression were used. Results: among nursing workers, 71% had precarious contracts, 33.6% reported extended working hours and 23.7% were union members. In the multivariable analysis, having little hospital experience was a predictor for poor employment (OR= 2.408; 95%CI= 1.051-5.518). The predictor variables for lengthening the working day were being a nurse (OR= 3.824; 95%CI= 1.274-11.483); overtime (OR= 3.668; 95%CI= 1.009-13.333) and inadequate number of workers (OR= 10.872; 95%CI= 3.409-34.675). Being a nursing technician was a predictor of being a union member (OR= 8.967; 95%CI=2.560-31.410). Conclusions: The pandemic has accentuated the precariousness of working conditions in nursing professionals, especially among nurses.
