With the accelerated growth of the Brazilian population in urban centers, waste management has been one of the main challenges due to the daily volume produced and the complexity of finding solutions for their treatment and disposal. The potential impacts of urban solid waste motivate scientific research on the subject. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) stands out as a technique to support decision making on a waste management model. However, the reliability of the results is influenced by the methodology, impact categories, system limits, data quality, and robustness of analyses. Therefore, it is not easy to define the best technology or policy for the urban solid waste management (USWM) due to the different technological, economic, social, and geographical contexts analyzed. In this perspective, the present study aimed to carry out a bibliographic survey to analyze the application of the LCA method in the USWM in different countries. After this analysis, it was possible to verify that despite the large number of LCA models and their application reducing environmental impacts, a general agreement on an ideal waste treatment strategy is not possible since waste management models depend on the local scenario and should be adapted to its specificities and characteristics. Thus, the technology and concepts used by a particular country cannot be transferred to another without appropriate adaptations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reverse Logistics is an area of growing interest among academics and business people. The high volume of goods traded, the wide range of products, the increasingly short cycle life of products, the growing environment legislation, the need for companies to differentiate, and the satisfaction of multiple interests, area all factors that justify this growing concern, among businesses, to organize the logistics for the return of goods, whether not consumed or already consumed, recovering value in some form. The literature mentions various strategic drivers that justify corporate reverse logistics programs. Five of these were examined, in a sample of forty-four reverse logistics programs, and their main characteristics were analyzed in light of a matrix of qualitative attributes constructed specially for the research motivation. Among other results, the sample studied showed the following percentage distribution of drivers in the cases analyzed: 50% of the programs were classifi ed in the driver category "economic"; 25% in the "customer services" category; 16% in the "ecological" category; 11% in the "corporate image" category and 7% in the "legal" category.
