This study aimed to understand from the perspective of children, and how they perceive and relate with the environment and how much this relationship may be related to the personal well-being, searching subsidies for possible environmental interventions with children. It is about two studies, the first one collected data on well-being averages for schools in the city of Cascavel-PR of children 10-12 years old. Personal Well-Being Index-School Children was used and data were analyzed by Student's t-test and ANOVA. The study showed that there were significant differences between the average well-being of schools in terms of how children relate to people, about their health, how safe they feel, and satisfaction with the things they have in general. In the second study, it analyzed children's perceptions of the concepts of well-being, attachment to a place, identity to a place and environmental satisfaction. Focus groups were held with open questions covering the children's environmental relationship, considering constructs such as well-being, place attachment, place identity and environmental satisfaction. It was found that children have an ecocentric view of environmental problems, and personal well-being appears to be related to attachment and place identity as well as proximity to nature. The sustainability of cultural values of historic centers depends, to a great extent, on the balance achieved between maintaining the resident population, preventing housing abandonment, and reconciling the new functions installed in those centers. Nowadays, tourism is seen as a solution to reactivate historic centers, often neglecting the original resident population. This study analyzes two examples of urban rehabilitation in historic centers, one in Portugal and another in Brazil, respectively, Porto and Salvador da Bahia, with 1996 and 1985 UNESCO classifications, respectively. The present study analyses the interaction between the evolution of building stock, renting and tourism, focusing on aspects that result in positive and negative actions for the preservation of the built heritage of these centers, their identity and exclusion of traditional residents.

In 2019, climate change was considered a global emergency due to the gravity it represents to the world, highlighting the low engagement of society in responding to the crisis. Geographical and psychological factors, among others, play an important role in developing awareness of climate change at an individual level. In this context, the investigation aimed at identifying the predictors of climate change perception as well as climate risk in Portuguese and Brazilian university students, having as variables Place Identity, Resilience Traits and Personality Traits. The research was developted in the perspective of Psychological Geography, through which the geographical reality can be understood in a psychological perspective when it is understandood that the geographic forms and contents can be conditioned by the subjective traits of individuals. We use psychometry as a technique and the SPSS software for the treatment of statistical data. The results indicate the Increase of Temperature as a strong predictor of the perception of climate change and its severity, followed by Resilience Traits (Assertiveness) and Personality traits (Openness to New Experiences). Place Identity contributes to the development of Resilience Traits, so it can be used as a management tool for adapting to climate change. Finally, we conclude the need to develop public policies in the face of the climate crisis, customized to the unique context of each country, region, community and individual. As a strategy to promote socio-spatially resilient, aware and engaged places in the face of climate emergencies, we propose investments in climate literacy and that it should be guided by the perspective of personalized and community education.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Fabricio_Rufato_2018.pdf: 1993386 bytes, checksum: 1ee5b8f9c494afe436df9803cf753fc0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-15 The environmental relationship in children provides greater welfare in childhood favoring greater human development and quality of life. Thus, this dissertation aimed to analyze if the items of the Place Attachment (PAS), Place Identity (PIS) and Environmental Satisfaction (CESS) in children are predictors of Personal Welfare (PWI-SC). The study included 886 children, and 54.13% girls and 45.87% boys with a mean age of 10.66 years (SD 0.62). Two studies were carried out: first a quantitative study, where as instrument were used the scales of Attachment to Place (PAS) α = 0.78, Place Identity (PIS) α = 0.79, Child Satisfaction (CESS) α = 0.66, α = 0.62 and Personal Well-Being Index-School Children (PWI-SC) α = 0.74. Data were analyzed quantitatively through multiple linear regression (Stepwise Method) and Student's t-Test. The results indicated that the items (environmental satisfaction), I am satisfied with the cleanliness of the school; I am happy when I am in contact with nature; I am satisfied with the separation of the trash (recycling) in my house; I am happy when I spend time with animals; and the items (attachment to the place), I would be very sorry if I had to move to another neighborhood and, I like to live in my neighborhood, are able to explain 25% of personal welfare in children. The average of welfare, attachment to the place and environmental satisfaction were compared by gender, and there was a significant difference only in the connectivity factor for the environmental satisfaction scale. The boys presented higher averages in this construct, which can be explained by the fact that they play more outside the house than the girls, in activities like fishing, activities with the parents, to ride of bicycle, etc. Subsequently, in the second article, a quantitative and qualitative study was carried out. The means of personal well-being by schools were compared through the t-test and Anova, and the results indicated significant differences between schools in the items related to health, safety, relationships with people, and things they have. Finally, the children's perception of the environment in which they live and the concepts of welfare, attachment to place, place identity and environmental satisfaction were analyzed qualitatively through the focal group technique. Four groups of the sixth year, from four schools of the public network of Cascavel-PR, located in the central, intermediate and peripheral regions participated in the research. It was found that children relate the influence of attachment and place identity to well-being, as well as being aware of environmental problems and cited attitudes toward daily actions of environmental intervention. This dissertation has helped to draw attention to the importance of the environment for children, as well as the importance of considering these issues in school, family and public policy, in order to promote a better quality of life for children.

‘Urban identity’ is high on the policy agenda and pervades the discourse of the planning community on the value of historical city centres. Unfortunately, there seems to be, until today, no proposal in scholarly literature of any unified conceptual framework or any tools to make identity operational. ‘Tourism’ takes advantage of this process, by seeking the qualities of the place, its authenticity and its perceived uniqueness that is grounded on the physical features as well as on the presence of local communities – their way of living and investing in the place. The interdependence between identity as perceived by tourists (external observer) and the identity of the residents rooted in the relationship with the place (in-group) are key to addressing the identity of historic urban areas. These issues are addressed in the context of the growing attractiveness of Lisbon, Portugal, using a historic neighbourhood as a case study. The findings, which are on a set of interviews with different groups of users, showed the points of convergence and divergence between the different groups' views of the neighbourhood's identity. This actor-oriented approach is pivotal to understanding the process and to produce knowledge for informed action.

The present study analyzes and compares the characterization of the new laws on recreational fishing and of the population from Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina by both local and national press. It also examines if that characterization changed across time under the changes in environmental laws and policies. The press is considered as a mediating system in the circulation of information between different levels, since it presents new laws to different publics, thus influencing its appropriation. The Social Representations Theory is the support of this thesis. This theory is considered ideal for the study of the press because it addresses the relations between change and stability in societies, which are capable of absorbing innovation and, at the same time, maintaining stability for long periods. This thesis consists of an analysis of 118 news from the local and the national newspapers having recreational fishing as the main issue, in the period between 2006 and 2014. This period corresponds to the regulation of recreational fishing in Portugal and in Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina in specific, being characterized by strong popular contestation and law adjustments in several moments. It was expected that the local press and the national press characterized the legislation in different manners, disseminating distinct representations on the importance of the protection of species and biodiversity. Results revealed differences between the local and national newspapers, mainly on the worries about the practical effects of the legislation on the particular context of the studied population.

People are often attracted to unique natural environments, but what makes them having the Sense of place? The focus of the research was to explore the meaning of ‘sense of place’ in national parks setting. Develop better understanding of the concept, since the nature of the concept is changing from discipline to discipline. In this framework the given thesis makes the empirical contributions to the resolution of issues connected with sense of place in terms of tourism and particularly national parks setting. Based on literature review and background studies, we have identified some limitations concerning sense of place for natural tourism destinations. Therefore, we have developed conceptual model, which explains the factors related to sense of place. The given model is grounded on the variables such as: Place attachment, Place identity, Place Dependence and Place experience. The model supports understanding of tourist’s Place satisfaction. Overall, model illustrates how deep consideration of ‘sense of place’ can enhance tourism. The validity of the model was examined by exploring the meaning of each concept in terms of protected areas and tourism. Besides the empirical work, quantitative method was used to obtain the data involving case study of Kazbegi National Park. The questionnaire was conducted with the aim of recognizing people-place relationship, their activities and experience, their attitude of existing tourism development and future improvements. The results show that tourists visiting to Kazbegi National Park have significance level of Place attachment, Place identity, Place dependence and place satisfaction. Therefore they have Sense of place.

The present investigation explores the way that the territory, in which african immigrants reside, as well as the place identity (PI) and the psychological sense of community (PSC), contributes to their subjective well-being. For this purpose, a study took place in two socially and economically different territories from the metropolitan area of the city of Lisbon, involving a total of 100 african immigrants: one in the suburbs socioculturally and socioeconomically homogeneous (Territory A) and the other, lying in the center of the city of Lisbon, socioculturally and socioeconomically heterogeneous (Territory B). The results suggest that all of the variables (Territory, PI and PSC) contributes significantly to the immigrants general well-being. Furthermore, in Territory A, the satisfaction with personal relationships and the sense of belonging are higher, compared to Territory B, whereas in Territory B the satisfaction with health, safety of the place of residence and spirituality/religion are higher than in Territory A. It is also conclusive, that the PSC helps to understand subjective happiness. Considering the relevant role immigrants have had in urban growth and development, it is important to conduct this kind of studies, in order to retrieve viable information about this population and then apply it in the development of more sustainable initiatives in our increasingly multicultural cities.

Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas Place Identity is based on our experiences throughout life in certain contexts or environments, which somehow had meaning in our existence and contributed to our composition as psychological beings. The house has not only physical meaning such as shelter and dwelling, but also emotional and affective meanings which are historically constructed by the residents in their social relations. This way, there's close relationship between cultural, social, economic and psychological aspects in the formation of identity of place. This study aimed to investigate the meanings and identity of place and their implications in shaping the social identity of the inhabitants of houseboats in the city of Coari-AM. The research of qualitative descriptive exploratory approach included a multi methods approach to better understand the environmental relations of the floating dwelling. The techniques adopted were: a) documental research along governmental bodies to obtain data on the housing and its occupants; b) participant observation along with , photographs and spontaneous interviews with old residents and c) semi-structured interviews with 30 residents (25W, 5 M) aged 18 years or over resident for at least six months at the place. The results showed that the people who live on a floating house embody in their own history the cultural experiences from the amazon environment, that is, its geophysical environment e the cultural practices in that relation, including the joy and the suffering as time passes by. The cultural waves signalised the city bay as the only possible housing in town. Living in a floating house in the city bay is far away from being a fancy environment. Living at the river surface is to foresee either the physical and social difficulties. Living over the waters is to float while they hope to be recognised as citizens. On this territory, the occupant is not recognised by the others, such as city administrators, as they live in a non-existing territory, they have no streets, no land, not even an address. The residents believe that due to living on this place, the city does not give them opportunities. Their invisibility is so evident that over them are thrown the city leftovers. Living in this place is to be socially invisible and to have always to fight to be recognised as citizen with all the needs regarding their social economic conditions, even with the consolation of being privileged to see the horizon on the river. place identity ,place attachment ,salience ,place scale - Abstract
Research about place, place identity and attachment supports the idea that bonds with places may differ depending on the place scale. Based on the view that identity is context-dependent, this paper brings to the table the impact of manipulating the salience of place on the intensity of place identity and place attachment reported. A study was designed to examine place identity and place attachment in two groups of residents (permanent and temporary) at three different scales (neighbourhood, city and country), in which the salience of place scale was manipulated. The results showed that place salience could have an impact on the intensity of place identity and place attachment in permanent residents and temporary residents. The salient effects differ depending on the place scale made salient but do not generally differ according to type of residents. These results are in congruence with the predictions of social identity theory and self-categorization theory and show the relevance of exploring the concept of place identity within this theoretical approach.

Abstract PLACE INDENTITY IN BENFICA: DISTINCTION, DISCOURSE AND SYMBOLIC BORDERS WITHIN THE NEIGHBORHOOD This paper analyses the relation between social identity and place identity. It focuses on the discourse built by the inhabitants of Benfica – a neighborhood in the city of Fortaleza-Ceará-Brazil – about their neighborhood and about the area called Gentilândia, which is considered to be more traditional and cultural in relation to the surrounding areas and their inhabitants. Thus, it is observed how an urban area is differentially valorized through representations which the inhabitants create of themselves and of the place they live in, drawing borders between inhabitants and places.

The goal of this study was to investigate comparative optimism regarding urban risks and to explore the role of identification with the city of residence in this process. Our sample included 156 university students from Lisbon, Huelva and Lyon. Results revealed the occurrence of comparative optimism regarding all urban risks considered (pick pocketing, burglary, terrorism and airplane fall). As expected, risks for self were always considered inferior than risk for others. However, this effect was influenced by risk characteristics and degree of city identification. Participants considered themselves less vulnerable than residents in other cities (outgroup comparison) particularly in the case of severe and uncontrollable risks (terrorism and airplane fall) whereas they were less optimistic in the case of less severe and more controllable risks (burglary and pick pocketing). Regarding identification, we found that in the case of controllable urban risks, more identified individuals revealed more comparative optimism than those less identified.

place identity ,relocation - Abstract
This study intents to examine the relationship between place change and identity process, using Breakwell’s model (1986, 1992) as framework. In the context of a process of imposed relocation in an old neighbourhood in Lisbon, two groups of residents were studied in two different moments along the relocation process. These two groups differ in terms of their choice of relocation. The generic hypothesis of the study is that relocation, and the residents’ choice changes the relation of the people with the space, the social relationships, and it has also an impact in the resident’s identity. The results show that the relocation process threats the identity principles in the two groups, but in different ways, depending of the residential choice, and also had impact in the social relationships and in the relation of the people with the space. As other studies (e.g.: Twigger-Ross and Uzzell, 1996; Speller, Lyons, and Twigger-Ross, 2002) this research underlines the relationship between changes in physical environment and identity, in the context of residential environment.

Abstract The North Lakes Program (PLN) proposes urban regeneration and socio-economic and environmental development interventions for an environmentally fragile area in the city of Teresina, Piauí. Given the importance of adjusting any environmental intervention to the specifics of the interactions between different human groups and the environment they live in, this article aims to analyse affective, symbolic and functional aspects of the relationship between residents of the Olarias district, located in the coverage area of the PLN and the place where they live. The research used qualitative methodology involving desk research, visits in loco and interviews with residents, analysed according to the Content Analysis technique. The results indicate the existence of strong affective, symbolic and functional bonds between residents and place, which, however, have been severely strained by PLN actions that disregard the relationships established between man and environment.
