The present study investigates the impact of the panoptic system on the reduction of violence and the rehabilitation of inmates. Conceived by Jeremy Bentham, the system promotes constant surveillance to instill discipline. The research aims to understand the control mechanisms in the prison system and their relationship with recidivism. The objectives include evaluating the system's effects on reducing violence, analyzing crime prevention strategies, investigating the psychological effects of surveillance, and improving professional training programs for inmates. The aim is to understand the interconnection between four key elements: the panoptic system, inmate monitoring, the sense of constant surveillance, and professional training. The system, based on constant surveillance, is effective in controlling and disciplining prisoners. Electronic monitoring helps prevent crimes and reduce overcrowding. Organizational culture affects inmate rehabilitation and prison efficiency. Training is crucial for inmate reintegration and prison management improvement. These elements highlight the need for innovative approaches to address prison system challenges. Society will benefit from a deeper understanding of the use of the panoptic system in reducing prison violence and rehabilitating inmates. The adopted methodology is systematic literature review, using various sources for in-depth analysis and pattern identification. This qualitative approach aims to comprehensively understand social phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the functioning and associated factors in children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted on 30 children and adolescents with OI. Medical records, use of bisphosphonates, socioeconomic status, handgrip strength, balance, joint hypermobility, ambulatory level, and the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory—Computer Adaptative Test (PEDI-CAT) scores were assessed. Data is presented as mean and standard deviation and Student’s t-test or Mann–Whitney U test. Categorical data is presented as frequency and analyzed using Fisher’s exact test. Within-group analyses were conducted using ANCOVA or Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Correlations used Kendall’s Tau-b test. Results: The participants involved in this study were 6–18 years old. The sample was separated into two groups according to disease severity. The moderate/severe OI group (n=10) presented a lower height and muscular strength than the mild group (n=20). Muscle weakness was observed in all participants with OI when compared with the normal population. No differences were observed between the groups in the PEDI-CAT scores except for the mobility domain. There were correlations between the PEDI-CAT mobility domain and the number of fractures, OI type, weight, and balance; there was also a correlation between the PEDI-CAT daily activities, mobility, responsibility, and social/cognitive domains. Conclusions: The findings suggest that children with moderate/severe forms of OI can achieve the same function levels as children with mild OI. Fractures can have a major influence on the functional level, and treatment should focus on the prevention and rehabilitation of these events when they occur.

This essay investigates the impact of inmates’ work and educational programs on recidivism rates over nearly five years for prisoners released from Santa Catarina prisons. Three methods were used to analyze recidivism and to control for self-selection bias and non-observable heterogeneity: propensity score matching, Cox, and frailty models. The frailty model showed that participation in work and educational programs reduced the odds of recidivism by 14% and 32%, respectively. This study suggests that programs are being carried out in Santa Catarina that may effectively impact prisoners’ rehabilitation.

- Abstract
The objective of this study is to present a clinical case of oral rehabilitation using digital workflow, encompassing the entire process from planning to treatment completion. The evolution of implantation techniques, incorporating intraorais scanners, tomographies, and digital planning software, has led to guided surgeries. These surgeries offer greater precision, reduced surgical time, and less discomfort for patients. The report describes surgical procedures performed on the maxilla and mandible. The use of surgical guides was crucial in guiding implant drilling, following a defined protocol of drills and guide sleeves. The fabrication of prostheses was based on intraoral scans, allowing for precise planning. The digital workflow provides a high level of predictability in the outcome of both surgical and prosthetic phases. Efficient and aesthetic outcomes, reduced surgical time, increased post-operative patient comfort, and shorter prosthetic fabrication time are distinct advantages of this technique. ABSTRACT The knowledge deficit of health professionals has been a barrier to expanding and implementing of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) services, despite the reported benefits of PR for individuals with Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD). This study aims to assess the preparedness of health care professionals from two Brazilian cities to perform PR in the public health system. This is survey is part of a larger project to implement PR in the Brazilian public health system. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge (19 questions), training (7 questions), confidence (10 questions), and clinical experience (8 questions) of physical therapists (PT) and the multiprofessional team (MT) before a PR workshop. In total, 44 PT and 231 MT answered the questionnaire. The mean total knowledge score was 10±3 for PT and 6±3 for MT. Few physical therapist reported having “a lot” of experience (25%) and confidence (22.7%) to perform PR, as well as sufficient training to conduct the six-minute walk test (27.3%).Even fewer MT reported having “a lot” of experience (10%) and sufficient training (4.8%) to perform PR, as well as to plan the educational program for patients (10%) and the confidence to refer patients to PR (6.5%). This is the first study to evaluate the preparedness of professionals from the Brazilian public health network to provide PR. Notably, both PT and MT have low preparation to perform PR in the studied cities, reinforcing the need for continuing education.

Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome ,Physical Therapy ,Rehabilitation ,Therapeutics. Pharmacology ,RM1-950 - Abstract
ABSTRACT After the acute phase of COVID-19, many patients have persistent symptoms or develop sequelae, which leads them to seek physiotherapy rehabilitation services. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the knowledge and experience of physiotherapists on the assessment and treatment of post-COVID-19 patients. The cross-sectional observational study was carried out with 73 physiotherapists using an online questionnaire about academic background, areas of expertise, knowledge about COVID-19, and knowledge and experience of assessment and treatment resources in post-COVID-19 rehabilitation, in addition to barriers to the care of these patients in the ambulatory care. Most physiotherapists had heard of post-COVID-19 syndrome, however, only 44% felt sufficiently informed about post-COVID-19 rehabilitation. There was a discrepancy between the degree of importance and experience with the frequency of use of assessment resources, especially the use of specific assessment instruments for skeletal muscle strength, mobility, and respiratory function, in addition to scales and questionnaires to assess disabilities, quality of life, and sleep quality. On the other hand, most reported the importance and had sufficient experience to treat post-COVID-19 patients using cheap and accessible resources. However, less than half use techniques related to respiratory muscle training and/or more sophisticated equipment. Thus, we conclude that most physiotherapists recognize the importance and report sufficient experience to assess and treat post-COVID-19 patients, however, there is a discrepancy between the assessment in the biopsychosocial context of the patient and the treatment process.

FEMORAL fractures , *JAGUARUNDI , *ANESTHESIA , *FELIDAE , *REHABILITATION - Abstract
Background: Performing surgeries and anesthesia on wild animals continues to be a challenge for veterinarians. There is great variability in species and, consequently, in physiological, pharmacological and management peculiarities, which makes it almost impossible to know everything about all existing species. Current literature on anesthetic procedures in felids is scarce and does not address many species of Brazilian fauna. The Herpailurus yagouaroundi, also known as the eyra cat or jaguarundi, is a small feline classified in the puma lineage that inhabits Brazilian territory. The objective of this study was to report the case of a jaguarundi cat with a femur fracture, in order to demonstrate the anesthetic procedure and provide knowledge about wild felines. Case: A jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) of approximately 3 months of age was brought to the University Veterinary Hospital at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) with a suspected closed fracture of the right pelvic limb. Clinical examination showed prostration, severe dehydration and cachexia, which warranted previous stabilization of the patient prior to anesthesia and surgery. Clinical stabilization consisted of fluid therapy, dietary management and analgesic support for 6 days. At the day of the procedure, premedication was administered intramuscularly with tiletamine and zolazepam for chemical restraint, followed by venous catheterization of the thoracic limb and induction of general anesthesia with intravenous propofol. The trachea was intubated with a Murphy tube of appropriate size and anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in 100% oxygen. Intraoperative analgesia comprised epidural administration of lidocaine without epinephrine and morphine at the sacrococcygeal space. Monitoring comprised peripheral saturation of oxyhemoglobin, esophageal temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate. Systolic arterial blood pressure was monitored using a vascular Doppler at the thoracic limb. Surgery comprised osteosynthesis of the right femur. Intraoperative complications included hypotension and bradycardia, which were transient and treated with intravenous administration of atropine. At the end of the procedure, the patient was monitored and rewarmed until complete recovery, with cardiorespiratory variables returning to normal values and recovery of consciousness. Finally, the patient was kept in observation at a restricted area to minimize stress caused by the presence of any other animals or people. Discussion: Manipulation of wild animals often requires administration of sedative or anxiolytic drugs to provide safety both for the patient and the team. In felids, an option for chemical restraint is the combination of tiletamine and zolazepam, which provides quick onset sedation with a wide safety margin in healthy patients. The duration of sedation enables most surgical interventions in these species and renders the combination a suitable choice for premedication. Sacrococcygeal epidural using local anesthetic agents and opioids reduces anesthetic requirements in felids and provides desirable analgesia both intra- and postoperatively, thereby minimizing the adverse effects of parenteral analgesics. The hypotension and bradycardia seen during anesthesia were ascribed to intravenous administration of fentanyl. The anesthetic protocol used in this report was considered adequate for surgical repair of a fractured femur in the jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), ensuring satisfactory analgesia with only mild complications and fast uneventful recovery from anesthesia. Due to the lack of reports addressing anesthesia of jaguarundis in current literature, choices of drugs, doses and techniques were based on other felid species, even including the domestic cat. This report can aid veterinary anesthesiologists in formulating an anesthetic protocol for the reported species, which must always take into consideration the clinical scenario and peculiarities of each patient. ABSTRACT Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, with dysphagia being a common symptom of the disease. Few studies established a relationship between neuromotor impairment and dysphagia. There is also a lack of described therapeutic approaches for dysphagia in HD. This study aimed to better understand the progression of neurological clinical aspects, instrumental swallowing and dysphagia management in four patients presented with HD in an outpatient follow-up setting. The longitudinal follow-up period was 36 to 43 months through neuroclinical assessments (Unified Huntington’s Disease Rating Scale) and fiberoptic endoscopic swallowing evaluations. Case 1 - a moderate decline of independence with safe swallowing. Case 2 - a moderate motor impairment, safe swallowing and moderate dysphagia during follow-up. Case 3 - a longer disease duration and increased motor impairment associated with moderate/severe dysphagia. Case 4 - a longer disease duration, need of assistance to perform daily activities, severe dysphagia and palliative care, considering the family decision of exclusive oral feeding. This longitudinal study revealed that the progression of neuromotor damage was not directly related to dysphagia development. This case series demonstrates the importance of follow-up settings with instrumental swallowing evaluations and careful consideration of early palliative care for HD patients.

ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluate and correlate the sagittal balance parameters with the postural of the pelvis and lumbar spine. Methods: 80 individuals of both sexes, aged between 20 and 35 years, were evaluated. Biophotogrammetry was done with the SAPO software program. Measurements of the sagittal balance parameters were obtained by analyzing a lateral view panoramic radiography of the vertebral column, in which the anatomical points of reference were digitally marked. The calculation of the angles was done automatically by the Keops program. Results: In Keops assessment, 17.5% of the sample had high pelvic incidence angles (> 60°), 31.5% had low pelvic incidence angles (< 45°), and 51.2% had medium pelvic incidence angles (between 46° and 59°). SAPO showed 12,5% lordosis, 40% retroversion, and 47,5% normal curvature. In the right lateral view, pelvic incidence angle had a moderate and positive correlation with vertical alignment of the trunk and with vertical alignment of the body, and a negative and moderate correlation with horizontal alignment of the pelvis. Conclusion: Differences were found between vertical alignment measurements from the postural evaluation system (SAPO). A positive correlation was found between PI from Keops and pelvic anteversion from SAPO. Level of Evidence II; Prospective Study.

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the current state of the art in the therapeutic administration of botulinum toxin with indications, efficacy, and safety profile for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. Data source: An integrative review was conducted. The MEDLINE/PubMed database was searched twice within the last decade using distinct terms, and only studies written in the English language were included. The study population was limited to those aged 0–18 years. Articles that were duplicates or lacked sufficient methodology information were excluded. Data synthesis: We found 256 articles, of which 105 were included. Among the included studies, most were conducted in developed countries. Botulinum toxin demonstrated good safety and efficacy in reducing spasticity, particularly when administered by a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team. It is primarily utilized to improve gait and upper limb function, facilitate hygiene care, reduce pain, prevent musculoskeletal deformities, and even decrease sialorrhea in patients without a functional prognosis for walking. Conclusions: The administration of botulinum toxin is safe and efficacious, especially when combined with a multi-professional rehabilitation team approach, which increases the probability of functional improvement. It can also be beneficial for patients with significant functional impairments to help with daily care tasks, such as hygiene, dressing, and reducing sialorrhea. Pediatricians must be familiar with this treatment and its indications to attend to and refer patients promptly when necessary, and to exploit their neuroplasticity. Further research on this topic is required in developing countries.

Abstract Objectives To describe a series of cases of tibial fractures surgically treated using the posterior approach as described by Carlson, focusing on evaluating its functional results and complication rate. Methods Eleven patients with tibial plateau fractures, who underwent surgical treatment using the Carlson approach from July to December 2019, were followed-up. The minimum follow-up period was defined as 6 months. The American Knee Society Score (AKSS), American Knee Society Score/Function (AKSS/Function) and the Lysholm score were used to check treatment results at 6 months after the fracture. The patients underwent standard anteroposterior and lateral radiographs to assess fracture healing, and clinical healing was determined by the absence of pain during full weight-bearing. Results The mean follow-up period was 12 months (9-16 months). The primary mechanism of trauma was motorcycle accident, and the most prevalent side of fracture was the right side. Eight participants were male. The mean age of the patients was 28 years. All fractures healed, and none of the patients presented complications. The AKSS was excellent in 11 patients, with a mean AKSS/Function of 99.1±3, and Lysholm scores with a median of 95.0±5.6. Conclusions The Carlson approach for posterior fractures of the tibial plateau can be considered safe, presenting a low complication rate and satisfactory functional results.

Abstract Objective The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the periarticular hip infiltration technique in the postoperative period of total hip arthroplasty. Methods This is a randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial in patients with femoral neck fractures or hip osteoarthritis submitted to a total hip arthroplasty at our institution. The periarticular infiltration technique consisted of the administration of an anesthetic (levobupivacaine) and a steroid (dexamethasone) agent in the nociceptor-rich tissues of the hip after orthopedic implants placement. The control group received an injection of 0.9% saline into the same tissues. Pain, range of motion, and use of opioid analgesic agents after 24 and 48hours of the procedure were evaluated, as well as the presence of adverse effects, time to resume walking, and total hospitalization time. Results The study evaluated 34 patients. The experimental group required fewer opioid agents between 24 and 48 hours. The reduction in pain scores was greater in the placebo group. Conclusion Periarticular anesthetic infiltration as a method of postoperative analgesia for total hip arthroplasty reduced the rates of opioid intake between 24 and 48hours. It provided no benefits regarding pain, mobility, length of stay, or complications.

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of CWI and passive recovery on indicators of fatigue in handball players after three consecutive days of competition. The study was applied to 41 handball players belonging to 8 handball clubs in Costa Rica (20 men and 21 women; 20.1 ± 4.08 years; weight, 68.03 ± 13.13 kg; VO2max= 42.40 ± 5.31 ml / kg / min). Four teams were selected and randomly assigned one of the two post-game treatments, one group received immersion and another passive rest, it was developed during a handball tournament of three consecutive days on a 20x40m field. Each team played one game per day with two periods of 30 min. No significant differences were found in tensiomyography, CMJ, DOMS, TQR and CK between the treatment group and the recovery group. It is concluded that CWI seems to be more effective than PR in variables such as DOMS and in Recovery Perception and the combination of different recovery methods should be analyzed in future research to better understand which the best strategies are to accelerate recovery of athletes during competitions

ABSTRACT Objective: One of the common limitations after COVID-19 pneumonia is the decrease in exercise capacity. The identification of the factors affecting exercise capacity and the assessment of patients at risk are important for determining treatment strategy. This study was conducted to determine the predictors of decreased exercise capacity in long post-COVID-19 patients. Methods: We investigated the association of exercise capacity as measured by the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) with age, sex, spirometric variables, respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, quality of life, fatigue, hospital anxiety depression scale, chest X-ray involvement, and hospitalization. The patients were divided into three groups: outpatients, inpatients, and ICU patients. Regression analysis was used to determine which parameters were significant predictors of exercise capacity. Results: Of the 181 patients included in the study, 56 (31%) were female. The mean ISWT in percentage of predicted values (ISWT%pred) was 43.20% in the whole sample, whereas that was 52.89%, 43.71%, and 32.21% in the outpatient, inpatient, and ICU patient groups, respectively. Linear regression analysis showed that predictors of decreased ISWT%pred were sex (b = 8.089; p = 0.002), mMRC scale score (b = −7.004; p ≤ 0.001), FVC%pred (b = 0.151; p = 0.003), and handgrip strength (b = 0.261; p = 0.030). Conclusions: In long post-COVID-19 patients, sex, perception of dyspnea, restrictive pattern in respiratory function, and decrease in peripheral muscle strength are predictors of reduced exercise capacity that persists three months after COVID-19. In this context, we suggest that pulmonary rehabilitation might be an important therapy for patients after COVID-19.

Background: Disability to work and the rehabilitation process are important events in the lives of working men and women who suffer some form of interruption in their working life due to work-related illnesses. Thus, knowing how they both cope with these situations can shed light on rehabilitation approaches. Objective: Systematize and synthesize what the scientific literature points out about the rehabilitation of incapacity for work in the perception of men and women. Method: Qualitative studies published in the CINAHL, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases were searched, using the descriptors: qualitative method, work disability, rehabilitation, and gender. The analysis was based on the assumptions of Noblit and Hare for meta-synthesis. Results: Men value the performance of occupational health services and the incorporation of work demands in rehabilitation. Women pointed out the attitudes of professionals, family and colleagues and valued the change of place or work task and the belief in their potential in the rehabilitation process. Conclusions: The present meta-synthesis pointed to the value that men and women attribute respectively, but not exclusively, to the centrality of work and social support networks in the rehabilitation process. - Abstract
To describe difficulties and barriers for adherence to telephysiotherapu durint the COVID-19 pandemic. Experience report, conducted with relatives and individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) on internet, smarthphone or computer, to receive asynchronous telephysiotherapy care in the form of folders and videos. All participantes were required to complete an initial assessment, a quality of live questionnaire, and at end provide feedback about remote assistance and exercise frequency. Nine individuals participated in this study, and few completed all the stages. Five participantes provided feedback regarding the offered assistance, and the majority of responses indicated difficulties in performing home-based physiotherapy. relatives and individuals with CF became overwhelmed with online demands, as routine activies were being conducted "on screen" during that period, which negatively impacted adherence to tepehysiotherapy. These finding alerts healthcare professionals to reflect on adherence aspects when offering this modality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This research aimed to analyze the impacts of physiotherapeutic assistance on the length of hospitalization and walking ability of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) between the years 2019 to 2020. This is a cohort study, retrospective and documentary in nature, which was carried out at the Nova Esperança University Hospital (HUNE). The sample consisted of 273 medical records accepted after the exclusion and loss criteria. The regression analysis showed that motor deficit, tonus alteration and aspiration procedure were responsible for 25% of the variation in hospitalization time. A second regression analysis was performed with the outcome ambulation at hospital discharge, and revealed that the behaviors of standing upright, cycle ergometer, positioning and sitting at hospital discharge were responsible for 67% of the variation in this outcome. The performance of physiotherapy was associated with a shorter hospital stay and ability to walk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Parkinsonian syndrome is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the quality of life and functionality of patients. Several therapeutic approaches have been used to improve symptoms and promote rehabilitation in these individuals. This study explored the benefits of hydrotherapy as a rehabilitation resource for parkinsonian syndrome. Through a systematic review of the literature, studies were identified that demonstrated the positive effects of hydrotherapy in this context. The main scientifically proven benefits include improved balance and gait, increased range of motion, sensory and cognitive stimulation, and muscle strengthening. Hydrotherapy provides an aquatic environment that reduces gravity and gently supports the body, making it easier to move and exercise. The buoyancy of the water helps improve balance and gait, reducing muscle stiffness and promoting more fluid movement. In addition, water resistance stimulates muscle strengthening and improves joint range of motion. Hydrotherapy also provides additional sensory and cognitive stimulation. The hydrostatic pressure of the water and the tactile sensation promote relaxation, stimulate proprioception, and help regulate muscle tone. The aquatic environment also provides cognitive stimuli, such as movement sequences and concentration during treatment sessions. However, it is important to emphasize that hydrotherapy does not replace other forms of treatment for parkinsonian syndrome but complements a comprehensive rehabilitation program. It must be performed under the supervision of qualified professionals and integrated with other therapeutic approaches, such as medication and conventional physical therapy. It is concluded that hydrotherapy offers significant benefits in the treatment of parkinsonian syndrome. Its positive effects in improving balance, gait, range of motion, muscle strengthening, and sensory and cognitive stimulation make it a valuable therapeutic option to improve the quality of life and functionality of patients with parkinsonian syndrome. Future research should continue to investigate and deepen our understanding of the specific therapeutic effects of hydrotherapy in this context, to provide more informed recommendations for clinical practice.
