The COVID-19 crisis represented a major challenge in various social and economic sectors, and the sport context was no exception. Professional clubs had to deal with an intense organisational and operational environment, which is essential to apply their tangible and intangible assets to obtain a sustainable competitive advantage. This study aims to examine the role of entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation and learning orientation in the performance of professional football clubs. In light of the lens of the resource-based view and adopted a qualitative approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews during the pandemic period with stakeholders from five football clubs participating in professional competitions. The results show that entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation, and learning orientation influence sports clubs’ performance. This study is relevant for sports organisations as it identifies a set of assets that, when strategically managed, can increase organisational performance and generate and enhance their competitive advantage and sustainability. It shows a relation between organisational orientations, the resources implemented in clubs and their performance. Competition stimulated sports organisations to adapt, renew, reconfigure and re-create their resources and capabilities in tune with the environment. Furthermore, professional sports clubs try to follow strategies that improve their sports performance, adapting entrepreneurial orientation to developing new services, products and activities, accepting risks and being proactive. This study is relevant for sports organizations in general, as it identifies a set of assets that, when strategically managed, can increase organizational performance as well as generate and improve a competitive advantage.

The volatility of the business environment requires that companies have strategic elements that can confer competitive advantages for survival in the market. In this sense, this study aimed to analyze the competitive potential of an accounting office located in Mossoró/RN based on the Resource-Based View. Methodologically, it is a descriptive case study whose data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was performed qualitatively, using the VRIO model as an interpretation method. The results found revealed the competitive implications of strategic resources and capabilities, highlighting that, of the seven analyzed, six had the potential to generate competitive advantage for the company, being four sustainable and two temporaries. In general, the present study offered a competitive panorama for the studied company, revealing the real potential of its resources and capabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay aimed to present as an approach guided by propositions of theoretical complementarity ofTransaction Costs Theory (TCT); Measurement Costs (MCT) and Resource-Based View (RBV), can support the understanding of the adoption of the vertical integration governance structure. Therefore, we sought to propose a theoretical scheme, based on a qualitative approach based on the concept of complementarity. It wasfound that the transaction of highly specific assets (TCT) and difficult to measure (MCT) justify vertical integration, but the theory of RBV, points out that the choice of agents also depends on the availability of capacities and resources. Thus, the formulation of this theoretical proposal seeks to contribute to the empirical analysis of the production chains considering organizational and strategic aspects.

Purpose: This article investigates and classifies firm resources for the internationalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from emerging countries. Originality/value: SMEs from emerging countries in global markets evidence their more restricted access to resources for internationalization. The mainstream international business literature classifies firm’s resources identified in large companies from developed economies. This research classifies firms’ internationalization resources located in different emerging countries based on a systematic literature review (SLR) and interviews. This paper contributes to the theoretical development about the internationalization of SMEs from emerging countries, indicating the importance of organizational resources in this process. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an exploratory research developed in two stages: a SLR on emerging countries and interviews with experts, institutions, and SMEs about the Brazilian context. Bibliographic research and an interview with semi-structured script were adopted as data collection techniques. Interviews were analyzed with NVivo software using content analysis technique and providing categorization of resources. Findings: Up to 2016, 15 works mentioned resources for the internationalization of SMEs from emerging countries and seven were done in Asia. We identified 72 resources in ten emerging countries. Organizational resources predominate. The use of financial resources in Brazil contradicts the trend in other emerging countries. More tangible resources seem less strategic for SMEs’ internationali¬zation from emerging countries when compared to more intangible resources, as organizational ones.

This article has as objective to analyze the activities and resources of the chain of a process of import of a containerized cargo, using as theoretical support the Value Chain, the Resource Based View and the Relational View in order to verify if these allow the development of relational rents. For that, a case study was developed whose main instrument of data collection was the interview. It was possible to verify that there are resources and activities of the value chain that contribute to the generation of relational rents, mainly coming from the trust and complementary resource allocation between the two companies. The technological development, especially after the emergence of the Internet, has speeded up the flow of digital data and information, leading to an increasing volume of data and information. Various researches have been conductedon the study of capabilities that might contribute to organizational performance, among them the information technology capability and information management capability. There is also the Information Capability, which was initially studiedin 2000. The theoretical approach mostly used in these researchers has been the RBV theory. However, when a competitive scenario grows unpredictably and rapidly, it is necessary to adapt to it by reconfiguring the existing resources and capabilities and, if necessary, by developing new capabilities. Thus, this study aims to discuss the dynamic capabilities as a theoretical lens to understand the information capability, proposing a model that contributes to the theoretical advance on this topic and enhance organizational performance. Purpose: Exploring the fit of employee roles and market dynamism, related to performance. Originality/value: In ecology the term ‘fit’ is used for the relation between organisms and their environment. Similarly, we conceptualized the relation between employee roles and markets: the employee-market connection, which may enhance SME’s strategic fit and performance. Design/methodology/approach: The empirical research was conducted at 48 SMEs with 221 respondents from the manufacturing industry (53%) and the service industry (47%) and applied a mixed model analysis. Findings: The employee role-mix is moderated by market dynamism: when market dynamism increases, the impact on performance of internal process roles decreases and the impact of rational goal roles increases. The results enrich the resource-based view with the employee-market-connection: the system is resilient, the roles adapt. A fit between market dynamism and employee roles is positively related to performance.

The value of biomedical research is acknowledged by society, especially after a pandemic unprecedented in history. Private hospitals, unlike public hospitals that act as "academic medical center", do not have the obligation to carry out scientific research activities, but their engagement on this field adds value to their care activities, contributing to the improvement of healthcare performance. The literature gap that this work sought to address is how private hospitals use their resources and capabilities for this activity as part of their strategy. The biomedical research enterprise, despite its importance, shares the existing structure in these hospitals, including competition for different types of resources. Thus, to create competitive advantage, this activity needs special resources and capabilities. Considering the relevance of the private healthcare business in Brazil and its growing contribution to the scientific scenario, the question that this work set out to answer is what are the capabilities and resources that create a competitive advantage for conducting research in private hospitals? This study employed qualitative methods that included a bibliographic review of the themes "biomedical research value" and "resource-based view applied to healthcare", documental analyses and field research through ten semi-structured interviews carried out with Chief Scientific Officers and Chief Executive Officers from a sample of outstanding private hospitals. The results indicate that these activities took shape in these institutions from the year 2000 and are still undergoing transformation, focusing primarily on clinical trials, whether sponsored by industries or institutional research (researcher's initiative). Some organizations with greater scientific maturity have organizational capabilities and specific resources to conduct experimental and pre-clinical research. Among the main resources and capabilities found for carrying out scientific activities in these organizations, we highlight, among the tangible resources, the establishing of support offices for researchers, appropriate physical areas, and specialized personnel as one of the key resources with VRIN characteristics. Despite the need for financial resources to carry out research projects, especially those of an institutional nature, the premise was unanimous that research cannot be seen as operational expenses, but as an investment. Among the intangible resources, the culture and the support of higher governance stand out to make the research activity a perpetual activity, and one that can bring the expected impact on the care provided by the hospital. The organizational capabilities already present in these organizations were undoubtedly strengthened by this permanent culture of dissatisfaction with status quo. The evaluation of indicators and research results in the strategic map was not unanimous among the institutions studied. However, all of them have management indicators as part of monitoring the research impact. We suggest, for future studies, advancing in the understanding of how the theme of research assessment can describe not only the reality of Brazilian research, but also the reality of research carried out within the hospital environment. In addition, the in-depth study of the impact of research in healthcare institutions may be correlated to economic and funding issues.

According to the Resource-Based View, the nature of the resources, competences and knowledge accumulated by firms are the major causes of variation in business performance. In view of the importance attributed to intangible assets, the purpose of the present study was to investigate whether innovative firms with superior and sustained performance and firms without superior and sustained performance differ with regard to investments in intangible assets. The sample consisted of 137 firms listed on the Brazilian stock exchange from 2007 to 2010 and belonging to innovative sectors according to the Brazilian Innovation Index. Only 51 firms with profitability above the sector average during the entire study period (four years) met the criterion of superior and sustained performance. Thus, using return on assets as a proxy for performance, investments in intangibles were found to be greater in firms without superior and sustained performance, particularly with regard to the categories intellectual property assets (the predominant category) and infrastructure assets. Based on the lack of evidence for a significant correlation between corporate performance and investment in intangible assets, our initial hypothesis that a positive relation exists between the composition of investments in intangible assets and the performance of innovative firms could not be confirmed.

- Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze strategic resources in two companies (a focal firm and one of its most important suppliers) from a supply chain of steel structures, using theoretical support from the resourcebased view. Specifically we intend to check if the identified resources are shared and improved in order to analyze the potential for expansion of competitive advantage of the two companies due of the relationship between them. We conducted two case studies, using as the main technique of data collection the semistructured and structured interviews. It is an applied and descriptive research which adopted a predominantly qualitative approach to data analysis. The results showed that the characteristics of the relationship between the companies are related to dependence, power, satisfaction, trust, communication and commitment. The resources identified in the research field were well assessed in relation of its value, sustainability and versatility by both companies. The most important resources for the relationship between the two companies are information and knowledge resources. The exchange of these resources led to an improvement of the following resources: product quality, interpersonal relationships, skills, experience and training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resource based view is based on analysis from the organization's internal environment, in order to gain competitive advantage through the satisfactory use of its strategic resources and capabilities. Base on that, this study aims to analyze the strategic resources and capabilities of Club Arranca in order to understand how these can be sources of competitive advantages. Regarding the method, this research is characterized as a single case study, accomplished through interviews and secondary data. The main results indicate that the Club has key resources that provide a competitive differential, such as infrastructure, portrayed in the wooded space and built space, and the reputation based on culture and human resources. These resources are based on the assumptions of heterogeneity and immobility, thus becoming possible sources of competitive advantage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper extends the corporation-based metaphor of the tree by proposing that cognition is the core ability which contributes to nourishing the development of core competencies in the organization. From such an extension, this paper takes a raises the following question: What is the role of cognition in the organization that is in the pursuit of core competencies and sustainable competitive advantage? This paper answers this problem by presenting two perspectives that contribute toward introducing the field of organizational cognition into the domains of the resource-based view and contingency. First, it proposes an ability-based view of the organization through analogies which are most associated with the concepts of the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities of the firm. Second, it proposes a contingency-based view of organizational cognition which is most developed through causal relations and also deductive and inductive reasoning. Grounded in these perspectives, this study sustains the thesis that cognition is a source of controlling environmental uncertainty and, complementarily, cognition contributes toward creating and sustaining the organization’s competitive advantage.

The location of a business site is a material resource and, along with its financial and technological resources, may provide a company with a distinguished position in comparison with its competitors. Deciding on the best location of a business site is a major task and requires several studies This paper proposes the integration of a Geographic Information System and an Expert System (SES) to support decision-making regarding the choice of the best location to open a branch of bank so that location constitutes a competition material resource for the organization. In this paper, we develop a system called the Realty Prospecting System for the Banking Sector (RPS), which allows these variables to be detailed in terms of value, rarity and difficulty to imitate and substitute. Assuming that the resource based view (RBV) emphasizes the strategic choice by the recovery of important actions such as identifying, developing and deploying key resources for the management of the organization to maximize returns, an analysis of the prospected properties in terms of competitive advantage was also conducted, concluding that the RBV is the element that contributes to the SPI. It increases ability to analyze the system beyond the question of location, i.e., the RBV allows prospected properties to be examined in terms of competitive advantage.

The distinction between competitive advantage and competitive sustainable advantage (CSA) as presented by Wernerfelt (1984, 1995), Barney (1986a, 1986b, 1991, and Barney and Arikan (2001) indicates that CSA tends to resist duplication. The purpose of the present study is to analyze how the SECI model (Nonaka and Takeuchi, 2004) has been evaluated by managers as a CSA source using from a Resource-based View perspective (RBV). A structured questionnaire with closed questions was administered to 200 managers. The questionnaire allowed the analysis of the manager´s view about the indicators that qualify the SECI model as a CSA source according to a RBV perspective. In other words, while the literature supports the idea that the SECI model develops CSA, the present study identified that the managers have a divergent view. This suggests that practices differ from theory.

The article reveals the theoretical implications of de Resource-Based View for understanding the firm competitive advantage. The dominant version to analysis of competitive advantage is represented by authors connected to Organizational Economics, which explain the differences (heterogeneity) between firms focusing behavioral aspects (ways of organization of unique and core resources). This approach takes importance insofar it advances on analysis of the positional competitive advantage based on the performance, in terms of efficiency and efficacy. The notion of sustainable of the competitive advantage implies heterogeneity based on conditions that assure the firm to retain the specific resources or the ones difficult to be transferred – a competitive advantage dependent on the complex and tacit restrictions of the protection mechanisms.

This dissertation has as its theme the Higher Education Institutions - HEIs, especially the case study on the Higher Education Center of Vale do Parnaíba - CESVALE, and aims to contribute to the continuation of this HEI in the current educational market, through the consolidation of strategies based on in the theory of Vision Based on resources, as well as the legal resources described for obtaining competitive advantages, ensuring its continuity. Analyze which are the resource-based strategies that Higher Education Institutions, specifically within CESVALE, adopt as a management tool, to obtain competitive advantages, ensuring their permanence in the educational market in Brazil. Data analysis was performed using the VRIO tool, identifying the possibilities for the consolidation of the identified resources, as well as the strengths and weaknesses arising from this analysis. Based on the analysis of the data, we perceive that at CESVALE the management of human resources moved through the survey of the potential of professionals, the development of skills and the necessary training. Therefore, it is clear that the more interaction that exists between the two theoretical models presented - strategic planning and Vision based on resources - the IES can remain in the Higher Education market in Piaui.

The resource-based view represents one of the main strands of thought in the business strategy’s fields. An organization's resources can be a source of competitive advantage, if they are recognized as valuable, rare, difficult to be copied and exploited by the company. This study intends to identify which resources and capabilities represent a source of sustainable competitive advantage for a pediatric oncology service in a private hospital, from the perspective of the VRIO model. Therefore, the methodology used was the collection of different data sources through interviews conducted with responsible for pediatric oncology clients. A semi-structured interview script was applied, where the available resources were questioned, clustered into five categories: physical and structural, human, organizational, technological, and reputational. In this way, it was possible to identify different arrangements of resources and capabilities as sources of sustainable competitive advantage, notably, to a greater or lesser extent, human, organizational and reputational resources. In addition, it was also detected that physical resources, from the hospital structure and technology, demonstrate different ways of obtaining temporary competitive advantages analyzed in the context. In this way, the resources evaluated can contribute to the strategic positioning of the pediatric oncology service within a healthcare company.

- Abstract
The pressure for a new pattern of sustainable development has required of modern organizations the search for competitiveness, but respecting and considering environmental issues. In this sense, a tool that acts in the implementation of structured strategies is the environmental management system (EMS), which focuses on improving environmental performance. This improvement, in turn, can generate to the organizations many benefits, among which, obtaining competitive advantages, susceptible of measurement from different perspectives. One of these is the application of VRIO model, reasoned by the resource- based view (RBV), which considers that the heterogeneity among between companies occurs due to differences between their internal resources and capabilities. However, although some studies that evaluate the competitive potential of certain organizations have been found in the literature, such assessments are not performed on specific objects, like the EMS. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the resources and capabilities (environmental strategies) of the EMS adopted by the Verdegreen Hotel, identifying which of these have the potential to generate competitive advantage. For this, this exploratory-descriptive casestudy used as data collection tools: a bibliographic survey, semi-structured interviews, documental research and direct observation. The interpretation of the results and the consolidation of information were conducted from a qualitative approach, using two techniques of data analysis, namely: content analysis and analysis through VRIO model. The results show that the hotel is quite structured in relation to their EMS, and it has benefits related to improvement of the management of environmental factors, to the strengthening of its image and to the gains in competitiveness. On the other hand, the main difficulties for the implementation of the system are related to employees and suppliers. With regard to environmental strategies adopted, of the 25 strategies identified, 10 showed the potential to generate competitive advantage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
