Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo uma análise histórica dos cursos de formação de professores e dos programas de ensino de Matemática para a escola primária na Bahia entre 1836 (ano da instituição da primeira escola normal do Estado) e 1960 (década demarcada pelo Movimento da Matemática Moderna), levando-se em conta as reformas educacionais estaduais de 1890, 1913, 1918 e 1925 e as determinações para estrutura e funcionamento do Ensino Primário e dos Institutos Normais de Educação. As fontes históricas documentais, em especial as alocadas junto ao Repositório da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), são parte do constructo investigativo: Quais as permanências e rupturas referentes aos cursos de formação de professores e aos programas de ensino de Matemática pautadas na legislação educacional e nas práticas pedagógicas das escolas normais e da escola primária da Bahia entre 1836 e 1960? Os resultados da pesquisa elaboram uma trajetória da escola normal, bem como do ensino de Matemática no Brasil, em particular, na Bahia, séculos XIX e XX

The objective is to report the surgical reintervention for enlarging margins in a patient diagnosed with cutaneous mast cell tumor. A canine, male, French Bulldog, 7 years old, was seen with a history of skin nodule removal in the abdominal region 15 days ago, with a histopathological diagnosis compatible with grade I mastocytoma and compromised surgical margins. Then, it was decided to perform a second surgical procedure to expand the safety margins, which was preceded by planning 5 cm of cutaneous margins and a layer of fascia and a muscular plane as a deep margin, in addition to inguinal lymphadenectomy. During the procedure, synthesis was possible without the use of reconstructive techniques, from the subcutaneous divulsion and the use of the Walking Suture pattern. There were no transoperative complications, and hematoma formation was the only postoperative complication observed. The material was sent for histopathological analysis, confirming low-grade cutaneous mastocytoma with free margins and no evidence of lymph node metastasis. Thus, adjuvant therapies were not instituted, and after 320 postoperative days, the patient was in excellent general condition, with no evidence of recurrence or distant metastases on chest radiography and abdominal ultrasound. It is concluded that surgical reintervention can be an alternative for the treatment of low-grade mastocytoma with compromised margins, and that histopathological diagnosis and surgical planning are essential to reduce trans and postoperative complications, increasing the chances of success and cure of the patient. Introduction: Classical aphasia evaluation scales are too long to use in the context of acute stroke or as a monitoring tool. The Aphasia Rapid Test is a 26-point scale developed as a bedside assessment to rate aphasia severity in acute stroke patients in less than 3 minutes. We aimed to adapt and validate this scale for European Portuguese., Material and Methods: We evaluated 56 acute stroke patients in the first and in the seventh days post-stroke. In the seventh day, patients were evaluated by two independent raters, to evaluate inter-rater agreement. To study concurrent validity, the Lisbon Aphasia Examination Battery was applied to a subset of 20 patients. The predictive ability of the Aphasia Rapid Test was assessed at six months, by the aphasia subscale of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale., Results: Translation to European Portuguese was based in the French and English versions, considering the words' utilization frequency. The Chronbach's alpha was 0.796. The concordance coefficient between the two raters was excellent (0.985). Correlation between Aphasia Rapid Test and the Lisbon Aphasia Examination Battery was strong (r = -0.958, p < 0.001). The study through Bland-Altman graphs corroborated the good inter-rater agreement and concurrent validity of the test. The Aphasia Rapid Test score in the first day is an independent predictor of long-term outcome., Discussion: This study provides reliable results for European Portuguese, with adequate internal consistency, inter-rater agreement and concurrent validity., Conclusion: The Aphasia Rapid Test is a good tool for the evaluation and monitoring of aphasia in stroke patients.

Introduction: The Mini-Mental State Examination is the most commonly used cognitive screening test. In Portugal, the cut-off scores are defined according to literacy groups, but different proposals have been recommended by more representative studies. We therefore propose to confirm the influence of demographical variables, such as age and education, in the subjectâs performance; evaluating the discriminant ability of the new normative data; and to further examine the diagnostic acuity of the validated cut-off scoring for mild cognitive impairment and for the most prevalent types of dementia., Material and Methods: Our study includes 1 441 educated subjects, divided into seven subgroups: Mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, community-controls and memory clinic-controls., Results: Altogether age and education explain 10.4% of the Mini-Mental State Examination results variance, with both variables contributing significantly to the resultsâ prediction. The diagnostic acuity based on the most recent normative data was always higher than the one obtained through the validation cut-off scoring, revealing an overall excellent specificity (superior to 90%) and different sensitivity values: excellent for mild Alzheimer's disease (91%), good for dementia with Lewy Bodies (78%) and low for mild cognitive impairment (65%), frontotemporal dementia and vascular dementia (55%)., Discussion and Conclusions: The performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination is influenced by age and education, supporting the use of normative data that consider those variables. With this approach, the Mini-Mental State Examination could be a sensitive and specific instrument for the Alzheimer's disease screening among all healthcare levels. Nevertheless, its diagnostic acuity is limited in other conditions frequently seen in memory clinics, such as Mild Cognitive Impairment and other types of dementia.

Introduction: The incidence and prevalence of global dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) increase with age, almost doubling every five years after the sixth decade of life. Demographic aging is a reality in Portugal, being expectable that the number of dementia cases also increases. Even so, dementia-epidemiological data in Portugal is scarce and cost-of-illness studies are almost inexistent. Our aims were to obtain up-to-date information about the prevalence of dementia/ Alzheimer's disease in Portugal, to estimate the number of cases effectively diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease and to determine illness-costs with specific dementia treatment., Material and Methods: The numbers of age-adjusted prevalence of dementia obtained for Occidental Europe (Alzheimer's Disease International study), where applied to the resident population in Portugal (2013). Estimations related to diagnosis and treatment-costs were based in data provided by the Intercontinental Marketing Services Health (IMSH)-2013., Results: The estimated number of Portuguese people with dementia among those aged ≥60 years, is 160,287, representing 5.91% of this population-stratum. Knowing Alzheimer's disease is responsible for 50-70% of all cases, we might conclude there are between 80,144 and 112,201 patients. According to IMSH-data, 76250 receive anti-dementia drugs and the costs of this kind of medication is 37 M€¬/year., Conclusions: As a consequence of the demographic aging, also the number of dementia cases increases. Apparently, not all Alzheimer's disease patients receive the recommended medication, suggesting this condition is still under-diagnosed. However, figures indicate a positive progression with an increment of treated cases and a reduction of medication-costs.

This article reviews Malformations of Cortical Development (MCD) diagnosed by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in a series of patients with epilepsy. This study spans a five year period. The frequency of these malformations was 7.1%. Most of these were focal or multifocal and the most common ones were polymicrogyria (35.3% of the patients), heterotopia (29.4%), and focal cortical dysplasia (29.4%). The frontal lobes were the most frequently affected regions. The various MCD encountered reflect the wide spectrum of MCD leading to epilepsy.

A case of Gaucher's disease associated with pregnancy is reported. Although clinical symptoms were not present, portal hypertension was detected by ultrasound in the 13th week of pregnancy. Maternal anemia implied the use of erythropoietin from the 33rd week onwards. Good perinatal and maternal outcomes were achieved and there were no hemorrhagic complications.

A case of presenile dementia with dominant frontal disfunction, progressive aphasia and Motor Neuron Disease with prominent bulbar signs is reported. Considering the clinical examination, the measurements of the regional cerebral flow (SPECT) and the histological appearances, we suggest the diagnosis of Dementia of Frontal Lobe Type and Motor Neuron Disease. We reviewed other disorders labelled Primary Frontal or Fronto-temporal Dementias and we discuss this new dementia and the difficulty in its classification.
