The relationship between Working Memory (TM) and functionality is not clear, the instruments available for evaluation are scarce and limited in the dimensions evaluated. This study aims to characterize the correlation between TM and performance in activities of daily living in institutionalized elderly. Institutionalized elderly people, not bedridden, capable of understanding two verbal commands were recruited, who were assessed for functionality, cognition and were submitted to the Agility Protocol to assess TM through the Speed of Reach in Memory Tasks. A correlational study was conducted between TM assessment data and performance in activities of daily living. A sample of 104 institutionalized elderly was evaluated. The TM showed significant correlations with: descending stairs - r = 0.43, food - r = 0.25, personal hygiene - r = 0.32, dressing - r = 0.34, use of the toilet - r = 0.36, transfers - r = 0.39 and mobility - r = 0.38. It is concluded that there is a correlation between TM and functional independence in institutionalized elderly, which may mean that the stimulation of this skill contributes to the functionality of this population. The aim of this study was to examine and assess qualitatively the Vale Glaciar do Zêzere hiking trail. Twenty nine participants, twenty men and nine women (age: 28.04 ± 10.79 years-old, height: 1.73 ± 0.09 m, body mass: 69.59 ± 11.00 kg), crossed a linear hiking trail with a distance of 9053 m. The walking speed was monitored using a GPS device (Fenix 5, Garmin, USA) and maintained constant at 5 km/h. The hiking trail assess used one evaluation sheet to analyse the qualitative domains, as the following: drainage, profile, bridges, stairs, vegetation, lateral/vertical protection, ground and signalling. Classification was obtained between 1 and 5, being that 1 means "without maintenance" (0% of the trail) and 5 "very good maintenance" (100% of the trail). Results obtained were between "without maintenance (0% of the trail)", "little maintenance (25% of the trial)" and "adequate maintenance" (50% of the trail). The main conclusion is that the Vale Glaciar do Zêzere hiking trail needs a restructuring and a good maintenance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A functional capacity and a full maintenance of the physical and mental abilities developed throughout the life. The study aimed to analyze self-perception about its functionality for Daily Life Activities (AVDS), relating the performance tests of the upper and lower limbs. This is a crosssectional study with longevous residents from Galópolis neighborhood of Caxias do Sul, RS. It was used the AFASII questionnaire, Manual Grip Test, Chair Sit and Lift Test and Timed Up Go Test. Thirty - one individuals with mean age of 83.23 years were investigated, being 74.19% female. The self-perception of general health was described by the longevous as good (14) and regular (12). An ease of execution such as AVDS (24), difficulty in climbing 10 steps or a ladder of stairs (10) and difficulty in lowering itself to an object on the ground (7). Longevous that reported ease of use of the AFASII questionnaire to carry bags and heavy objects, sit and stand without the use of hands, walk 400 meters and leave the house presented better performance in the Manual Grip test, Sit and Lift and Timed Up and Go tests. Most of the longevous referred a good perception of health, presented good performance in the tests and functional capacity higher than expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DUCHENNE muscular dystrophy , *EXPERIMENTAL design , *LIFE skills , *RESEARCH methodology , *STATISTICS , *BODY movement , *INTER-observer reliability , *STAIR climbing ,RESEARCH evaluation - Abstract
Background: Instruments of functional evaluation for patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), available from the literature, are limited and scarce, making clinical decision on Physiotherapy difficulty. Objectives: To describe the process of creating a functional assessment scale In patients with DMD while going up and down the stairs, as well as to analyse the intra and inter-rater reliability of this scale. Methods: The scale development consisted of five stages: 1 ) to elaborate a script for directed observation based upon literature. 2) to describe a sequence of movements assessing 120 video recordings from 30 children (from 5 to 11 years) with DMD while going up and down stairs, 3) to elaborate a scale considering the degree of difficulty to execute the movements, 4) to create handbook, and 5) to submit both the scale and the handbook to be assess by 10 examiners, and review to create the final version. Both repeatability (researcher) and reproducibility (two Independent examiners) were tested by using the IntraClass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Weighted Kappa respectively. Results: The scale encloses five phases for going up and four phases for going downstairs. Our results showed both excellent intra and intertester reliability, with values of Weighted Kappa ≥0.78 in all phases and ICCs≥O.89, with p<0.05 for all scores. Conclusion: The proposed scale showed excellent repeatability and reproducibility, requiring continuing the studies to assess Its accuracy, validity and to create digital tools to improve data collection. Background: The use of surface electromyography (SEMG) has been considered a tool for quantitative assessment of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Conservative treatments aim to improve patellar alignment, and electrical stimulation of the vastus medlalis obliquus (VMO) muscle has been considered effective because it is selective and does not cause joint irritation. Objective: This study aims to investigate the efficiency of a muscle strengthening program with electrical stimulation of the VMO muscle in PFPS by SEMG. Methods: A group of ten young women (age: 23.1 ±4.9 years; body mass: 66.8±14.0kg; height: 1.63*6.9 cm; BMI: 25.1 ±5.6 kg/m2) with unilateral PFPS participated in the study. They performed the functional test of stair stepping to capture the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the VMO and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles, before and after a program of electrical stimulation of the VMO muscle. The electrical stimulation was performed three times per week for six weeks. For analysis between the VMO and VL muscles, we considered the variables: ratio of time of onset to peak of activation, ratio of the integrals of the signals (t-test for dependent samples), and difference between onsets of activation (Wilcoxon test), with significance level of p≤0.05. Results: The results only showed change in behavior in the EMG signal for the ratio of the integrals of the signals, indicating that changes occurred in the force-generating capacity of the muscle after the training. Conclusion: The use of electrical stimulation should be considered to complement the conservative therapeutic approach in patients with PFPS, and the analysis of the ratio of the integrals of the SEMG signals should be considered as an instrument of evaluation. Objective: To investigate the performance of hemiplegic patients in 180° turns before and after a training program which is effective in improving other functional tasks, considering the effect of the turning direction. Methods: Thirty chronic hemiplegics (17 men and 13 women; 56.36±10.86 years) participated in a training program (aerobic activities and muscular strengthening) and were evaluated before and after the intervention by means of the Step/Quick Turn (SQT; Balance Master®), which involves a 180° turn during gait. Gait velocity and stair climbing ability were also evaluated. Mixed repeated-measures ANOVA (2x2) was used to compare the turning direction (paretic and non-paretic) and the pre- and post-intervention evaluations. Paired t tests were used to investigate the impact of the training program on gait velocity and stair climbing ability (α=0.05). Results: No significant differences were found in any of the SQT variables when considering the turning direction (0.23
