O estudo se justifica porque, como processo de agregação de preferências, a regra da maioria se destaca para usos eleitorais e de processos políticos internos, em um elevado número de nações. Anchored in the rationalist approach, but with the impossibility of consensus rule and seeking to show the characteristics of the majority rule and some of its problems, as the Condorcet paradox, and solutions to these problems, such as logrolling, this article intends to review and synthesize theory about it, based on the main contributions to the theme. The study is justified because, as a process of preference aggregation, majority rule is used for election purposes and internal political processes in a large number of nations. Dissertação de mestrado em Estatística, O comportamento e intenções de continuidade ou não dos alunos no ensino superior são fundamentais para uma tomada de decisão consciente e justificada ao nível de gestão da Escola, permitindo a aplicação de medidas preventivas em áreas consideradas como necessárias tendo em vista um processo de melhoria constante, tanto na perspetiva da Escola, como na dos alunos e ainda de outros intervenientes envolvidos mais diretamente, como é o caso dos Professores. Em 2010/2011 foi efetuado um questionário aos alunos do 1º Ciclo (C1) da Escola de Ciências da Universidade do Minho (ECUM) para conhecer as suas motivações na escolha do curso, avaliar a intenção de mudar de curso, de continuar ou não os estudos para o 2º Ciclo (C2) ou até para doutoramento, pretendendo conhecer as razões que poderão estar na base destas decisões. A informação recolhida numa base de dados foi alvo de uma primeira análise onde foram obtidos alguns indicadores, que se apresentam num relatório de estágio efetuado no ano letivo anterior. Este trabalho parte dessa mesma base de dados, efetuando primeiramente uma análise sobre as variáveis que permitem a comparabilidade entre a distribuição das respostas e a do universo dos alunos. Para a análise de diferentes tipos de informação sobre os mesmos indivíduos provenientes de bases de dados distintas e onde a ligação direta não é possível por não existir uma chave primária comum, a análise simbólica de dados pode ser uma solução. Nesse sentido, vão ser apresentados os princípios e exemplos de aplicação dessa metodologia inovadora na área da análise multivariada. Por fim, e porque é de grande utilidade para o Conselho Pedagógico ter conhecimento de uma estimativa do fluxo de entrada nos cursos de C1 da Escola de Ciências, foi desenvolvido um questionário a ser aplicado a nível regional, aos alunos do 12º ano, onde se pretende conhecer o seu interesse potencial em seguir estudos no Ensino Superior, nomeadamente para os cursos da ECUM, da Universidade do Minho (UM) ou de outro curso fora da UM., The behavior and intention of continuing to study of students in higher education are fundamental factors in making a conscious and justified decision at the top management of the University. This also allows for the application of preventive measures in areas considered necessary to constantly improve, in the perspective of the internal management of the school, of the motivation of the students, and of others involved as is the case of teachers. In 2010/2011, a questionnaire was carried out in the School of Sciences of the University of Minho (Escola de Ciências da Universidade do Minho - ECUM) to students of the first cycle (C1) to know their motivation in choosing the degree/subject of their studies, to assess their interest in changing the subject of their studies/degrees, to continue their studies or not to the second cycle (C2) or even a doctorate, in order to know the reasons on which these decisions are founded. The information collected in a database has been the subject of a first analysis from which some indicators have been obtained. The starting point of this work is that database. First, an analysis was carried out on the variables that allow for comparability between the distribution of the answers and the population of students. For the analysis of different sources of information on the same individuals and where a direct link is not possible, since there is no common primary key, symbolic data analysis may provide a solution. In this sense, the principles and examples of application of this innovating methodology in the field of multivariate analysis will be presented. Finally, and because it is of great use to the Pedagogical Council of the University to have an estimate of the flow at entry into the C1, a questionnaire was developed to be applied at the regional level to students of the 12th grade, so as to get to know their potential interest in pursuing studies for higher education, especially courses of ECUM, other courses of the University of Minho, or even any courses of other Universities.
