A large number of studies have shown a potential association between periodontal and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Similar mechanisms of tissue destruction concerning periodontitis and other autoimmune diseases have stimulated the study of a possible relationship between these conditions. This study aims to review the literature about this potential association and their different pathogenic mechanisms. Considering that periodontal disease is a disease characterized by inflammation influenced by infectious factors, such as SLE, it is plausible to suggest that SLE would influence periodontal disease and vice versa. However, this issue is not yet fully elucidated and several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this association, as deregulation mainly in innate immune system, with action of phagocytic cells and proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-18 in both conditions' pathogenesis, leading to tissue destruction. However, studies assessing the relationship between these diseases are scarce, and more studies focused on common immunological mechanisms should be conducted to further understanding., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Editora Ltda. Objective To assess primary health care attributes of access to a first contact, comprehensiveness, coordination, continuity, family guidance and community orientation. Method An evaluative, quantitative and cross-sectional study with 35 professional teams in the Family Health Program of the Alfenas region, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Data collection was done with the Primary Care Assessment Tool - Brazil, professional version. Results Results revealed a low percentage of medical experts among the participants who evaluated the attributes with high scores, with the exception of access to a first contact. Data analysis revealed needs for improvement: hours of service; forms of communication between clients and healthcare services and between clients and professionals; the mechanism of counter-referral. Conclusion It was concluded that there is a mismatch between the provision of services and the needs of the population, which compromises the quality of primary health care.

Purpose: To carry out a study of association between socioeconomic and demographic factors and homicides in general population, in the state of Bahia, in 2009., Methods: This is an ecological study. The data were collected from the database of the Information System about Mortality of the Ministry of Health, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and the Institute of Applied Economic Research. The Global Moran index was calculated for the detection of spatial autocorrelation, and the Local Moran index was calculated for the detection of spatial Clusters. The transformation in the variable answer (homicides rates) was performed and it was shaped using the Conditional Autoregressive Model., Results: The data showed spatial autocorrelation. Two clusters of municipalities with high rates of homicides were identified, one located predominantly in the Greater Metropolitan Region of Salvador and the other in the South Region of Bahia, especially Eunápolis and Lauro de Freitas, which had the highest rates. The Average Residents Variables, local GDP and the Percentage of Illiteracy presented an inverse association with homicide rates, and the variables Firjan's municipal development index of work and income. Enrolment in high school and the Average of Bolsa Família were directly associated., Conclusions: The urbanization process, in most cases, not controlled by the State, in most cases, made the cities bigger and with better socioeconomic conditions, attraction centers for people with different socioeconomic levels, increasing the social inequality among the residents of these regions, with parallel increase in homicide rates.

Objective: To evaluate the physiological effects of music therapy on hospitalized preterm newborns., Methods: A noncontrolled clinical trial including 12 newborn infants with gestational age <36 weeks, spontaneously breathing. The preterm infants were submitted to 15-minute sessions of classical music therapy twice a day (morning and afternoon) for three consecutive days. The variables: heart and respiratory rates, oxygen saturation, diastolic and systolic arterial pressures, and body temperature were analyzed before and immediately after each music therapy session., Results: There was a decrease in the heart rate after the second session of music therapy (paired t-test; p=0.002), and an increase at the end of the third session (paired t-test; p=0.005). Respiratory rate decreased during the fourth and fifth sessions (paired t-test; p=0.01 and 0.03, respectively). Regarding oxygen saturation, there was an increase after the fifth session (p=0.008). Comparison of physiological parameters among sessions, for the six studied sessions, showed only that the gain in oxygen saturation during the fifth session was significantly higher than during the sixth one (Tukey's test after variance analysis; p=0.04)., Conclusions: Music therapy may modify short-term physiological responses of hospitalized preterm newborn infants.

Objectives: To evaluate the alveolar bone density (ABD) in the upper first molars of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and to compare their ABD with that of healthy controls. Secondary objectives included the evaluation of the influence of medication and rheumatic disease activity on ABD, in addition to the correlation between ABD and periodontal and rheumatologic clinical parameters., Patients and Methods: This study assessed 16 patients with JIA (six boys and 10 girls; mean age, 16.2 ± 2 years) and 11 controls (six boys and five girls; mean age, 16.4 ± 2.1 years). Probing depth (PD), visible plaque index, gingival bleeding on probing (GBP), and the clinical insertion level (CIL) were recorded. Bite-wing radiographs were obtained and ABD was measured in the upper molars by use of the Kodak RVG 6100 Digital Radiography System., Results: ABD, the percentage of sites with PD > 4 mm, and GBP were significantly lower in patients with JIA than in controls (P = 0.001; P = 0.019; P = 0.011, respectively). ABD was influenced by neither medication nor JIA activity, and showed no correlation with periodontal and rheumatologic clinical parameters., Conclusion: ABD was lower in patients with JIA and seemed to be influenced by neither medication nor rheumatic disease activity. In addition, no correlation was observed between ABD and periodontal and rheumatologic clinical parameters.

This study aims to identify the conflicts found daily throughout the development of the specialization course Process of Change in Superior Education and Health Services. This descriptive qualitative study is a case study carried out at a private University Center in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The subjects were 18 students from the specialization course, who spontaneously decided to participate in the study The data was collected in April 2009 and analyzed and described in five thematic units that describe the focus of conflicts in the world of the work: Integration among Education, Work and Citizenship; Team work; Permanent education, Social responsibility; Establishment of the care line. The intersection between the academic field and health services produces tensions and conflicts which are latent most of the time, but are never evident.

The present work presents a brief history of health plans in Brazil examining the interface between the public and the private sector. The evolution and regulation of the supplementary care system is analyzed, the different care modalities are defined and the main differences between health plans and dental care insurance are pointed out. The coverage provided by the supplementary care system and its relationship with the public health system is shown on the basis of current data. On the other hand, the study focuses on the care services, health plans and the labor market in the sector correlating, also on the basis of current data, the challenges and new opportunities of the supplementary care market, mainly in the dental sector. Although the dental sector is living an extraordinary moment within the private health care system and given that ANS data are pointing to a growth of this sector of 210% over last the 7 years, the service coverage of the supplementary care sector mainly directed to medical and inpatient care does not meet the real demand for integrated health care.

The present study aimed to evaluate the incorporation of the immunofluorescence test (IFT) with adult parasite paraffin sections as antigen substrate for the detection of IgM antibodies (IgM-IFT), as a diagnostic method in the schistosomiasis control program in the county (municipality) of Holambra, São Paulo State, Brazil. This city was selected for this study based on its low endemicity for schistosomiasis, the first cases having been reported in 1993, and because of the need to implement a control program with more sensitive diagnostic techniques. 202 individuals underwent IgM-IFT, with 48 serologically positive cases; of these, 28 were tested with the Kato-Katz technique, using three stool samples. Schistosoma mansoni eggs were found in 14 individuals, with egg counts varying from 2.7 to 224 per gram of stool. The results indicate the potential usefulness of IgM-IFT as a screening test, subject to subsequent confirmation using a parasitological method, in low-endemic areas for schistosomiasis.

Neonatal repercussion researched of the serotonin selective recapture inibitor (SSRI) chronic treatment about the somatic growth, of the encephalon and skull. Male rats were divided into groups: control (NaCl) and Cit (10 microL/Kg citalopram 10 mg). In 21 post birth days were measured body weight, side axle , front and rear and skull circle. At 8, 15, 22 days after birth, animals were sacrified for the encephalon withdrawal to evaluate the measurements mentioned above. SSRI use caused body growth deficit, skull and encephalon reduction. The retard is possibly caused by the magnitude change of the trophic serotonin action over the skull-facial morphogenesis, reinforcing the serotoninergic system participation over the somatic and ontogenic growth. The SSRI possible hypophagic effects are not discarded.

The first mathematics research were realized in Brazil by people with polytechnical formation, that means, coming from Polytechnic. This work presents biographical drafts and the main contributions of elevens from these pioneers. The worked in military Schools and Polytechnic. And also in the faculties of philosophy that started to appear in the country since 1930. In these group of eleven mathematicians one can differentiated between the ones who were sympathetic with positivism and the ones who were not.

The nutritional quality of protein hydrolysates has been related in several reports to their di- and tripeptide contents. In the present work different hydrolytic conditions were tested using papain in order to prepare casein hydrolysates with a suitable peptide profile for being used in special diets. The hydrolysates were fractionated by size-exclusion HPLC and the rapid Correct Fraction Area method was used for quantifying the peptides. Among the five hydrolytic conditions studied, three of them gave rise to preparations having nutritionally similar peptide profiles. However, the use of the temperature of 37 degrees C and enzyme:substrate ratio (E:S) of 2% may probably be the most economical condition for industrial production.

Introduction: Morbidity due to motor vehicle accidents was analysed in a descriptive study based on reports of hospitals with the objective to characterize their victims, types of injuries, and the health care provided., Methods: The study was carried out in two municipal hospitals of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Motor vehicle accidents were defined as a run over, a collision, and "other traffic accidents". Data was collected from cases seen in May (Hospital 1) and June (Hospital 2) of 1996 by 7 teams that alternated in shifts of 12 hours, covering the collection 24 hours per day. The events were classified according to the victim or, when it was impossible, to the person who helped them or accompanied them to the hospital., Results: In the study period, 320 cases were seen in Hospital 1 and 290 in Hospital 2. Most of the victims were men (69.3%) in both of hospitals and the most affected group was young adults between 20 to 39 years (60.5% in Hospital 1 and 47.5% in Hospital 2). Of all 610 cases, the main cause of injury was being run over (49.3%), followed by collisions (35.6%), and "other traffic accidents" (15.1%)., Conclusions: The analysis of the cases distributions and the type of care required corroborates with the need of a better organization of hospital care teams, more completeness of hospital reports and emphasis on some aspects in prevention campaigns.

This article presents the results of an evaluation of Orientation and Serological Support Centers, or Anonymous HIV Testing Centers, in the Northeast of Brazil. Methodological triangulation was used to evaluate these health programs and services, including qualitative and quantitative methodology and pointing to the insufficiency of single-discipline reasoning to encompass phenomena in social organizations. The article also shows results from this triangulation experience, seeking to combine Social Sciences and Epidemiology. It describes the structure and dynamics of these services, analyzes the relationships, perceptions, and representations of the actors, presents a self-evaluation by the professionals, expounds on some quantitative results, and discusses some limits and problems, as well as proposals to overcome them.

This study presents data on general mortality and mortality from external causes (traffic accidents and homicides) among adolescents 10 to 19 years of age in Rio de Janeiro Municipality, Brazil, from 1980 to 1994. The purpose of the study was to describe and put into context mortality from external causes and to identify areas of the Municipality where the risk of these occurrences is highest. The study also sought to identify trends and seasonal patterns of this mortality and to place violence within the ambit of public health through application of the epidemiologic surveillance approach. Information on mortality was extracted from death certificates provided by the State Health Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro. A total of 20,224 death certificates were studied. The populations used as the denominators for determining rates were estimated from the censuses of 1980 and 1991. For purposes of the analysis; the Municipality was divided into eight programmatic areas, each composed of diverse neighboring districts. A time series analysis was done for traffic accidents and homicides. The results showed that external causes were the leading causes of death in the 10-19 age group, and that during the study period deaths from these causes had increased, especially among males. The results also revealed that mortality was heterogeneously distributed in areas of the Municipality that differed socioeconomically. The study points to the need for better integration of the health sector with other sectors and institutions and for a restructuring of the health system with regard to epidemiologic surveillance of violence.
