Being the title of several poems by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Eurydice represents a important trope for the discussion about language and writing undertaken in Andresen's poetics. In its metaphorical conception, the character represents the poet's failure in the quest for poetry, which cannot be achieved as an ideal fulfilment and becomes the poem itself: a staging of effort and loss - the attempt to capture the bird of reality, in Sophia's own words in 'Arte poética III'. As Maurice Blanchot observes, "(...) only in song does Orpheus have power over Eurydice, but even in song, Eurydice is already lost". In this sense, it is necessary to lose Eurydice and Eurydice will always be lost. In the path of this reflection, we wonder if it would be possible to understand Eurydice as a representation of the Nymph, Aby Warburg's allegorical character that Georges Didi-Huberman understands as a theoretical allegory, a fundamental image of the German art historian's conception of survival: fleeting, foreign, 'the heroine of the "ephemeral movements of hair and clothes". It is therefore worth trying to understand how this Nymph runs through Sophia's work and what her presence seems to indicate about her poetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Case report of a 7-year-old female patient diagnosed with gastric trichobezoar requiring surgical intervention for removal. Psychic aspects related to obsessive-compulsive hair-pulling disorder were addressed, as well as diagnostic and treatment options. The relevance of this work is justified, since the condition is predominant in the pediatric age group and in most cases the first professional to contact this patient will be the pediatrician.

Abstract Objective Structural racism is a systemic phenomenon in Brazilian society that distributes conditions of subordination and privilege among racial groups, reinforcing the dominance of the White group. Its individual expression can be seen throughout daily interactions. Children, through immersion in the social fabric, construct their cultural identity and gradually develop a sense of belonging to an ethno-racial group. The aim of this study is to identify racialized social stereotypes about hair in conversations among girls aged 9 to 11 years old. Method Two groups were organized in a public school, each consisting of two Black and two White girls. They participated in seven video-recorded play sessions, averaging 30 minutes each. Among the toys were a Black, blonde, Oriental, and a brown-haired White doll. Results Microgenetic analysis was performed, focusing on conversation segments about ethnic-racial belonging. Conclusion It revealed racist beliefs and values underlying the meanings attributed to hair.

Damage caused by chemical, physical, and thermal procedures can disrupt the natural morphological characteristics of the hair, causing the strands to become dry, dull, weak, and brittle. The objective of this article was to update dermatologists on the methods available for assessing hair shaft damage. The main laboratory (microscopy, tensile strength, structural assessment, physical and mechanical properties) and outpatient (diagnostic tests and patient history) diagnostic methods for evaluating the quality of the hair shaft are presented.

Hair transplantation is an option for anyone with Androgenetic Alopecia, including transgender patients who want to align their appearance with their gender identity. Thus, hair transplantation can help transform appearance and boost self-esteem, especially if hair loss is a source of gender dysphoria. We report two cases of hair transplantation in transgender patients with good results, using the Follicular Unit Extraction and Follicular Unit Transplantation techniques. Due to the scarcity of specific articles about hair transplantation in this population, we report these cases for a better understanding of the specific needs of these patients.

The protagonism of female figures is quite significant in the Latin literary representation of the funeral liturgy. In this sense, the hair of bereaved women plays a relevant role in the expression of the pain of grief and comprises, along with other elements, the performance of female grief. Based on the analysis of textual sources by Latin authors, we propose to observe how the speech of male authorship appropriates of female hair as a gender marker in written language in the mourning diction and if this representation constitutes a socio-cultural mechanism, which configures the female figure as an emotional body. We also tried to understand how the representation of the the hair of bereaved women is elaborated in a way to metonymically conceive the dismal female emotion as a rhetorical device, designed to accentuate the tragic pathos of mourning. This study proposes a reading of the novel-essay Esse cabelo, by Angolan writer Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida. More specifically, we intend to demonstrate that the afro hair of Mila, the characternarrator of the work, can be understood as an arena of a dispute of identity issues that involves continuous tensioning and transit between the fixed poles of the colonizer and the colonized. To this end, some theoretical conceptions concerning blackness and racism proposed by names such as bell hooks (2019), Claudia Rankine (2021), Frantz Fanon (2020), Grada Kilomba (2019), and Ingrid Banks (2000) will be discussed, as well as reflections about the feminine developed by thinkers such as Lucía Guerra (1995), Rita Laura Segato (2014) and Sherry Ortner (1979). Abstract Five cases of telogen effluvium undergoing resolution are shown, with the presence of frontal, bitemporal, and occipital hair regrowth. Diagnosing acute telogen effluvium after the end of the active phase can be challenging, especially when the pull test is negative. The differential diagnosis includes alopecia areata and traction alopecia. Clinical signs of hair regrowth after telogen effluvium can help in the diagnosis. The frontal and temporal areas have more telogen hairs and are more affected. On the occipital area, hairs seem to have the same behavior. The acute telogen effluvium triad during resolution is proposed: frontal fringe, temporal recess and occipital fringe.

Modern hair transplant is constantly evolving. We intend to demonstrate our techniques and methodologies, and especially to describe the dynamics of the entire surgical process of the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), technique, from the discussion of the surgical strategy with the patient and evaluation of the donor area to extraction and implantation. The dermatologist must understand the complexity of the procedure and the need for adequate training to achieve a good surgical result.

Although little reported in daily practice, the use of systemic retinoids can cause changes in the shape, color, and texture of hair shafts. We report a case of a patient treated with isotretinoin for acne vulgaris who experienced new growing curly hair. Such hair changes are recognized during therapy with oral retinoids; however, isotretinoin-induced modifications on the hair fiber curvature are extremely rare.

This work reflects on the Brazilian historical and sociocultural context, taking a critical look at the reason that leads women with not straight hair to depreciate and submit their hair to chemical straightening processes. The objective of the study was to understand how the hair transition contributed to the power of these women to act towards freedom of choice about the shape of their own hair. This was an exploratory, qualitative and documentary research and for data collection we used videos published on the Youtube platform by two women who underwent straightening and hair transition. Discourse analysis was performed based on cultural-historical psychology. The analyzes showed that, although there is an aesthetic supremacy, it is possible to perceive the recognition of the place they occupy in a racialized or ethnic group, when they make a capillary transition. Scalp seborrheic dermatitis, or dandruff, is thought to worsen during the winter when there is later sunrise and less daylight. This study investigates trends in search engine interest for the term "dandruff" as they relate to changes in daylight, sunrise, and seasonality. We investigated the search interest in several countries of varying latitudes over a five-year period, and we explore the effect of daylight saving time on disease interest within two cities in the United States. We discuss our findings in the context of hormonal changes and skincare/behavior.

Abstract Dissecting cellulitis is an inflammatory, chronic, and recurrent disease of the hair follicles that mainly affects young Afro-descendent men. Trichoscopy is a method of great diagnostic value for disorders of the scalp. Clinical and trichoscopic findings of dissecting cellulitis are heterogeneous and may present features common to non-cicatricial and scarring alopecia. This article presents the trichoscopic findings of dissecting cellulitis that help in the diagnosis and consequent institution of the appropriate therapy and better prognosis of the disease.

This paper is a review of proteomics and mass spectrometric techniques used for the study of historical textiles and garments. First applied on archaeological animal fibers over a decade ago, proteomics has made important contributions to the analysis of ancient proteins and to cultural heritage studies. The field of proteomics has the potential to give a better understanding of the modes of fabrication of ancient textiles, their composition and pathways of degradation, as well as the development of animal fibers through domestication and breeding. This review summarizes current analytical methods, describes the different sources of animal fibers and their biomolecular characteristics and methods of analysis, and finally presents the main applications of proteomics to historical clothing.

Abstract Tinea incognito resulting from corticosteroid abuse is becoming very common in the tropics. Its diagnosis is tricky owing to its confusing morphology, as well as practical and technical issues associated with mycological tests. Dermoscopy has now evolved as a novel diagnostic tool for diagnosing tinea incognito in such challenging situations, since the typical hair changes such as Morse-code hairs, deformable hairs, translucent hairs, comma and cork screw hairs, and perifollicular scaling may be seen despite steroid use, irrespective of mycological results.

An efficient use of operative time is a concern regarding not only hair transplantation but all surgical procedures. In case of large areas to be transplanted, no more than 6 hours per session is recommended, to avoid damaging transplanted hairs. We developed a device using sterilized materials, with the exception of a compressed air flowmeter, support serum, and compressed air, which remain outside the surgical field. The "Hair Wash" device shortened the operative time and improved the surgery. The "Hair Wash" device is feasible and easily replicable, and improves the hair transplant procedure.

INTRODUCTION: High implantation of the hairline by the ear is a frequent, unpleasant stigma in rhytidoplasties. To overcome this problem, we created the Peninsula technique in the mid-1999. Initially used in secondary face liftings, its indication has since been broadened, becoming indispensable in primary cases of high hair implantation and in patients requiring major skin resection. METHODS: The total number of rhytidoplasties performed was 7,356, with 2,512 patients operated using the Peninsula technique from 1999 to 2016. Mean age was 48, 98% were females and 2% males. The technique presents three variants. RESULTS: Patients were monitored on a monthly basis until discharge at the end of six months. Among the results, there were some complications, which are usual in any type of facial surgery. In the great majority of cases, with the use of the Peninsula, it was possible to obtain good skin traction, with the greater correction of the mid third, maintaining the capillary implantation line. CONCLUSION: We can conclude that the Peninsula technique is a unique resource, easily reproducible, capable of reducing the learning curve in rhytidoplasty, as it allows generous skin resection without changing capillary implantation, avoiding post-surgical stigma and optimizing the quality of the results and patient satisfaction, with a little scar burden.

Hair length is an important characteristic of cattle. It is related to heat tolerance and ectoparasite infestation, such as by the horn fly, Haematobia irritans, and the tick Rhipicephalus microplus. Due to the importance of this trait, this study was carried out whith the dairy herd of the Institute de Zootechnics, located in Nova Odessa, São Paulo state. A total of 95 cows (over one year old) and 13 heifers (under one year old) of black and white Holstein breed, 10 cows and 7 heifers of the Jersey breed, and 16 cows and 8 crossbreed heifers were sampled. The crossbreed animals had at least 50% European genotype. Three hair samples were collected from the middle scapula between October 13 and 24, 2016, using specially adapted electric pliers. The hair were put in plastic sachets and then; the 10 longest hairs of the sample were measured. The analysis of variance (GLM) performed by SPSS 16.0 considered the fixed effects of breed, age (animals older or younger than one year old) and the interaction of these effects, with post-hoc comparisons of means (lest significant difference, P0.05) in hair length between the Jersey and crossbreed, but both differed from the Holstein. New assessments of the hair length of this herd will be carried out and they will be related with performance and resistance to ectoparasites.

In this work, we analyze the narratives of black women on their hair, selfcare practices and appearence, which bring their experiences and reflections on how these (trans)formed their identities. The speeches analyzed were collected from blogs and news portals, available on the Internet, in texts dedicated to discuss racial relations, racism, black aesthetics and black feminisms. For the analysis, we take as theoretical referent the work of authors that discuss racial issues and processes of identity production. In the analysis of the material it was possible to think, from the perspective of these women, their processes of subjectivation since childhood, the relation with the older generations, and the daily aesthetic selfcare. In their narratives, dialogued with theoretical references that discuss processes of production of identity, as well as ethnic-racial relations, emerge experiences crossed by explicit and subtle episodes of racism. The results point to the need for a greater interlocution of Psychology with feminists and anti-racists references to theorize the processes of subjectivation of black women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The flows through tubular forms in the body, material culture and the natural environment play a key role in the thought of the indigenous peoples of Northwest Amazonia. Using examples from daily life, mythology and ritual, this paper examines the tube as an abstract concept that unites physiology, psychology, and productive processes with wider sociological and cosmological issues. The material, visual, and acoustic manifestations of tubular flow (hair) also raise the issues of synaesthesia and fractal notions of totalization / detotalization. With tubes as tantamount to life itself, ritual attention is focused on regulating bodily and other apertures to ensure balanced, tempered flow. The paper concludes by suggesting that the cultural elaboration of tubes and synaesthesia in Northwest Amazonia may relate to the lineal, exogamic features of social structure characteristic of the region.

Abstract Silicon is the second most abundant element on Earth, and the third most abundant trace element in human body. It is present in water, plant and animal sources. On the skin, it is suggested that silicon is important for optimal collagen synthesis and activation of hydroxylating enzymes, improving skin strength and elasticity. Regarding hair benefits, it was suggested that a higher silicon content in the hair results in a lower rate of hair loss and increased brightness. For these beneficial effects, there is growing interest in scientific studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of using dietary supplements containing silicon. Its use aims at increasing blood levels of this element and improving the skin and its annexes appearance. There are different forms of silicon supplements available and the most important consideration to be made in order to select the best option is related to safety and bioavailability. Silicon supplements are widely used, though there is wide variation in silicon bioavailability, ranging from values below 1% up to values close to 50%, depending on the chemical form. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the scientific literature related to the different chemical forms of silicon supplements available and the limitations and recent progress in this field. According to reported studies, among the different chemical forms available, the orthosilicic acid (OSA) presents the higher bioavailability, whereas the others forms have absorption inversely proportional to the degree of polymerization. However, clinical studies evaluating safety and efficacy are still lacking.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of human head hair on performance and thermoregulatory responses during 10-km outdoor running in healthy men. Twelve healthy males (29.5 ± 3.7 years, 174.9 ± 4.3 cm, 72.7 ± 3.2 kg and VO2max 44.6 ± 3.4 ml.kg-1.min-1) participated in two self-paced outdoor 10-km running trials separated by 7 days: 1) HAIR, subjects ran with their natural head hair; 2) NOHAIR, subjects ran after their hair had been totally shaved. Average running velocity was calculated from each 2-km running time. Rectal temperature, heart rate and physiological strain index were measured before and after the 10-km runs and at the end of each 2 km. The rate of heat storage was measured every 2 km. The environmental stress (WBGT) was measured every 10 min. The running velocity (10.9 ± 1 and 10.9 ± 1.1 km.h-1), heart rate (183 ± 10 and 180 ± 12 bpm), rectal temperature (38.82 ± 0.29 and 38.81 ± 0.49oC), physiological strain index (9 ± 1 and 9 ± 1), or heat storage rate (71.9 ± 64.1 and 80.7 ± 56.7 W.m-1) did not differ between the HAIR and NOHAIR conditions, respectively (p>0.05). There was no difference in WBGT between the HAIR and NOHAIR conditions (24.0 ± 1.4 and 23.2 ± 1.5ºC, respectively; p=0.10). The results suggest that shaved head hair does not alter running velocity or thermoregulatory responses during 10-km running under the sun.

INTRODUCTION: Rhytidoplasty has shown excellent results in the treatment of facial laxity over the years, but in a few cases in which the patient has increased facial laxity associated with high preauricular scalp implantation, we observed elevation of implantation above the root of the helix after flap traction, resulting in an unesthetic facial appearance and marring the surgical procedure. The objective of this study was to demonstrate a surgical technique designed to prevent hairline recession and maintain correct alignment for the facelift. METHODS: Of 25 patients who underwent rhytidoplasty, 12 received a segmented scalp peninsula. Descriptive analysis in this group included age, level of scalp implantation, surgical time, elevation of the hairline, necrosis, postoperative hematoma, unesthetic scars, and neuropraxia. RESULTS: We analyzed the results of a segmented scalp peninsula in 12 patients, ranging in age between 41 and 74 years, with a mean of 60 years. The return to usual activities ranged from 10 to 21 days. No unesthetic changes resulted from placement of the hairline on the sideburn in these 12 patients; there was one (4%) case of hematoma, but no case of necrosis or neuropraxia. CONCLUSION: The segmented scalp peninsula is an easily performed technique, with a low risk of complications and with satisfactory esthetic results.

AbstractBACKGROUND:Lichen planopilaris is a frequent presentation of primary cicatricial alopecia. Scalp distribution characterizes the main clinical presentations: classic lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia and Graham-Little Piccardi-Lassueur Syndrome (GLPLS).OBJECTIVE:Description of the clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological findings of Lichen planopilaris in public and private practices.METHOD:A retrospective observational study was performed by reviewing medical records of patients with lichen planopilaris.RESULTS:Eighty patients were included, 73 (91,25%) were female. Prototype II was seen in 53 (66,25%) patients. Classic lichen planopilaris was seen in 62,5% of the cases. Frontal fibrosing alopecia was seen in 31% of the patients and only one patient presented Graham-Little Piccardi-Lassueur Syndrome (GLPLS). Scalp lesions were scattered throughout the scalp in 47 (58,75%) of the patients, while 24 (30%) presented mainly central scalp lesions, 29 (36,25%) presented marginal lesions and only 4 (5%) patents had vertex lesions.CONCLUSIONS:Clinical presentation of Lichen planopilaris varies. To recognize the heterogeneity of the clinical appearance in lichen planopilaris is important for differential diagnosis.

AbstractFemale Pattern Hair Loss or female androgenetic alopecia is the main cause of hair loss in adult women and has a major impact on patients' quality of life. It evolves from the progressive miniaturization of follicles that lead to a subsequent decrease of the hair density, leading to a non-scarring diffuse alopecia, with characteristic clinical, dermoscopic and histological patterns. In spite of the high frequency of the disease and the relevance of its psychological impact, its pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, being influenced by genetic, hormonal and environmental factors. In addition, response to treatment is variable. In this article, authors discuss the main clinical, epidemiological and pathophysiological aspects of female pattern hair loss.

Abstract Giant axonal neuropathy is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease. The condition is characterized by neurons with abnormally large axons due to intracellular filament accumulation. The swollen axons affect both the peripheral and central nervous system. A 6-year old female patient had been referred to a geneticist reporting problems with walking and hypotonia. At the age of 10, she became wheelchair dependent. Scanning electron microscopy of a curly hair classified it as pili canaliculi. GAN gene sequencing demonstrated mutation c.1456G>A (p.GLU486LYS). At the age of 12, the patient died due to respiratory complications. Dermatologists should be aware of this entity since hair changes are considered suggestive of GAN.

BACKGROUND: Trichoscopy is becoming increasingly popular in diagnosing hair and scalp diseases. Scalp involvement in pemphigus is common. The scalp may be the first or only site of clinical manifestation of the disease. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze whether trichoscopy may be useful in aiding differential diagnosis of scalp lesions in patients with pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus. METHODS: Trichoscopy was performed in 19 patients with scalp lesions in the course of pemphigus (9 patients with pemphigus vulgaris and 10 with pemphigus foliaceus). In all patients, the diagnosis of scalp pemphigus was confirmed by histopathology. The working magnification was 20-fold and 70-fold. RESULTS: The most frequently observed trichoscopy features of pemphigus lesions were: extravasations (18/19; 94.7%) and yellow hemorrhagic crusts (11/19; 57.9%). Yellow dots with whitish halo were observed in 6/19 (31.6%) patients with pemphigus. White polygonal structures were observed in pemphigus foliaceus (6/10; 60%), but not in pemphigus vulgaris. Vascular abnormalities were more frequent in pemphigus vulgaris, when compared to pemphigus foliaceus, and were associated with a severe course of disease. Linear serpentine vessels were the most frequent vascular abnormality in patients with pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus (77.8% and 30%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Trichoscopy may serve as a useful supplementary method in the differential diagnosis of pemphigus, especially in cases of desquamative or exudative lesions limited to the scalp. Extravasations, yellow hemorrhagic crusts, yellow dots with whitish halo, white polygonal structures and linear serpentine vessels are trichoscopy features which may suggest the diagnosis of pemphigus.

BACKGROUND: Hair loss is a common complaint among women and may be associated with psychological disturbances. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated dermatology patients with respect to the prevalence of complaints of hair loss and the association between these complaints and symptoms of depression. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with female outpatients over 20 years of age with no hair-related disorders. Patients were asked about hair loss and were evaluated with respect to symptoms of depression. The following variables were also analyzed: age, dermatological diagnosis, comorbidities, medications, family history of alopecia, hair length, the number of hairs extracted in the hair pull test and the presence of hair thinning or seborrheic dermatitis. Data were compared by bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regressions between groups of women with and without hair loss. RESULTS: Of the 157 women interviewed, 54% reported hair loss and 29% reported at least two key symptoms of depression. The median (IQD) age of the women was 51 (20) years. Complaints of hair loss were associated with the presence of symptoms of depression even following adjustment for the other covariates (p=0.02; OR=2.79; 95%CI: 1.18-6.61). Statistically significant differences were also found between the patients with and without hair loss with respect to: age (p=0.03), family history of alopecia (pFUNDAMENTOS: Queda de cabelos é queixa frequente entre mulheres, podendo estar relacionada a comprometimento psicológico. OBJETIVOS: Investigar a prevalência da queixa de queda capilar em pacientes dermatológicas e sua associação com sintomas depressivos. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal com pacientes femininas, ambulatoriais, maiores de 20 anos de idade, sem doenças capilares. Foram questionadas quanto à presença de queda de cabelos e avaliadas quanto à presença de sintomas depressivos. Também analisaram-se: idade, diagnóstico dermatológico, comorbidades, medicações, história familiar de alopecia, comprimento capilar, número de fios obtidos à tração e presença de rarefação capilar ou dermatite seborreica. Os dados foram comparados bivariadamente e por regressão logística múltipla entre os grupos com e sem queixa de queda capilar. RESULTADOS: Das 157 mulheres entrevistadas, 54% referiam queda capilar e 29%, ao menos dois sintomas depressivos fundamentais. A idade mediana foi 51+20 anos. A queixa de queda capilar esteve associada à presença de sintomas depressivos, mesmo quando ajustada pelas demais covariáveis (p = 0,02; OR = 2,79 [IC 95%: 1,18-6,61]). Pacientes com e sem queixa também diferiram, significativamente, quanto à idade (p = 0,03), à história familiar de alopecia (p < 0,01), ao comprimento capilar (p = 0,01), ao número de fios obtidos à tração (p = 0,02), à rarefação capilar (p < 0,01), à dermatite seborreica (p < 0,01) e a problemas de relacionamento pessoal (p = 0,04). DISCUSSÃO: Alterações capilares configuram tema de frequente interesse nessa população. A significativa associação dessa queixa com sintomas depressivos indica relação entre a percepção da saúde capilar e o bem-estar psicológico das mulheres avaliadas. CONCLUSÃO: A queixa de queda capilar foi frequente e esteve associada a maior prevalência de sintomas depressivos entre as pacientes adultas de ambulatório dermatológico público.

Netherton syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by erythroderma, ichthyosis linearis circumflexa, atopy, failure to thrive and a specific hair shaft abnormality called trichorrhexis invaginata or bamboo hair, considered pathognomonic. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy with erythroderma since birth, growth deficit and chronic diarrhea. Trichoscopy was used to visualize typical bamboo and "golf tee" hair and of key importance to diagnose Netherton syndrome. We suggest the use of this procedure in all children diagnosed with erythroderma.

A alopécia frontal fibrosante é uma forma de alopécia cicatricial progressiva e, frequentemente, irreversível, marcada por um infiltrado liquenóide na histologia. Desde sua primeira descrição, em 1994, na Austrália, alguns casos têm sido documentados em todo o mundo. O artigo relata, pela segunda vez na literatura, um caso brasileiro e revisa os principais aspectos desta dermatose.Frontal fibrosing alopecia is a kind of progressive and frequently irreversible cicatricial alopecia marked by a lichenoid infiltrate in histology. Since its first description, in 1994, in Australia, some cases have been documented all over the world. The article reports, for the second time in the medical literature, a Brazilian case and reviews the main aspects of this dermatosis.

Os níveis de mercúrio (Hg) total em cabelos estão diretamente relacionados à alimentação, particularmente ao consumo de peixes por populações costeiras com grande representação caiçara. No presente estudo foram avaliados os níveis de mercúrio total em cabelos de crianças com idade entre 4 e 12 anos, pertencente a três escolas públicas da cidade de Cananéia, São Paulo, Brasil. Os resultados obtidos (mediana e intervalo) para mercúrio total foram de: 0,04mg.kg-1 (0,01-0,77mg.kg-1), 0,39mg.kg-1 (< 0,01-3,33mg.kg-1) e 0,39mg.kg-1 (< 0,01-2,81mg.kg-1) considerando as escolas ES1, ES2 e ES3, respectivamente. Em geral, os valores encontrados estiveram bem abaixo do valor preconizado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde para uma população adulta não exposta ao mercúrio (2,0mg.kg-1). Os baixos valores observados e a inexistência de valores de referência para mercúrio total em cabelos de crianças brasileiras possibilitam a consideração desses valores como possível referência nacional em cabelos de populações costeiras, uma vez que foram obtidos em região de baixo impacto ambiental.Mercury (Hg) levels in hair are directly related to eating habits, especially fish consumption by coastal populations with a large contingent of traditional fishing families. This study assessed total Hg levels in children's hair. The study group was selected from three public elementary schools in Cananéia, São Paulo State, Brazil (ages 4 to 12 years). The results (median and range) for total Hg levels in children's hair were: 0.04mg.kg-1 (0.01-0.77mg.kg-1), 0.39mg.kg-1 (< 0.01-3.33mg.kg-1), and 0.39mg.kg-1 (< 0.01-2.81mg.kg-1) for schools ES1, ES2, and ES3, respectively. The values were well below the level set by World Health Organization for an adult population unexposed to Hg (2.0mg.kg-1). However, since there are no existing reference values for total Hg in children's hair, these results can be used as a contribution to establishing reference values for total hair Hg in Brazilian children living in coastal areas.

FUNDAMENTOS: A alopecia androgenética é a causa mais comum de perda progressiva de cabelo. Geralmente ocorre em doentes com predisposição hereditária para esse tipo de alopecia e com androgénios circulantes. OBJETIVO: Avaliar aspectos epidemiológicos e clínicos de pacientes com alopecia androgenética pertencentes ao sexo feminino. MÉTODOS: Realizou-se estudo clínico transversal e descritivo em grupo de mulheres com alopecia androgenética observadas na consulta de tricologia entre 2004 e 2006. Os dados foram analisados com base na estatística descritiva e no teste do qui-quadrado. RESULTADOS: Foram estudadas 200 mulheres com diagnóstico clínico de alopecia androgenética. Em 68% das pacientes foi detectada história familiar e, na maioria das mulheres, a alopecia era frontobiparietal. De acordo com os dados analíticos estudados, 17% delas tiveram níveis baixos de zinco e 9% de albumina e ferritina. Em 20% foi detectada alteração no estudo hormonal. CONCLUSÃO: A alteração analítica mais detectada nas mulheres estudadas com alopecia androgenética foi a alteração hormonal.BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia is the most frequent cause of progressive hair loss. It usually affects individuals with genetic predisposition and sufficient circulating androgens. OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical and epidemiology aspects of androgenetic alopecia in females. METHODS: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was performed. The sample comprised a group of women with androgenetic alopecia seen in trichology consultation from 2004 to 2006. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test. RESULTS: A total of 200 women with clinical diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia were studied. Family history was detected in 68% of patients, and the most common site was frontoparietal hairline. The laboratory tests showed that 17% of females had low zinc and 9% low albumin and ferritin levels. Twenty percent of patients presented changes in hormone levels. CONCLUSION: The most common laboratory finding in the patients studied was hormone changes.

Alopecia frontal fibrosante é forma progressiva de alopecia cicatricial. Os casos iniciais foram relatados a partir 1994, na Austrália, em pacientes do sexo feminino pós-menopausa. Desde então inúmeros casos foram descritos na literatura sugerindo que ela é mais prevalente do que inicialmente se supunha. Seu curso progressivo se assemelha ao da alopecia androgenética; histologicamente, entretanto, o infiltrado liquenóide é evidente. O artigo relata seis casos brasileiros e discute a alopecia frontal fibrosante dentro do grupo das alopecias cicatriciais, como variante do líquen plano pilar.Frontal fibrosing alopecia is a progressive cicatricial alopecia. The first cases were described in Australia in postmenopausal women, in 1994. Since then, numerous cases were reported, suggesting that frontal fibrosing alopecia is more prevalent than initially thought. Its progressive course in postmenopausal women, clinically resembles androgenetic alopecia; however, histologically, lichenoid infiltrate is evident. This article report six brazilian cases of frontal fibrosing alopecia and discusses them in the context of cicatricial alopecias, as a variant of lichen planopilaris.

OBJETIVO: avaliar os casos com suspeita de puberdade precoce, em relação à classificação diagnóstica e etiológica, atendidos no período compreendido entre os anos de 2000 e 2005. MÉTODOS: foram revisados os prontuários de 58 pacientes com suspeita diagnóstica de puberdade precoce atendidas no período compreendido entre os anos de 2000 e 2005 para análise de dados relevantes. Os critérios de inclusão foram desenvolvimento de mamas e/ou pêlos pubianos antes dos oito anos de idade. As pacientes foram classificadas de acordo com o quadro clínico e os exames complementares em uma das seguintes categorias: puberdade precoce central (PPC), pseudopuberdade precoce, telarca precoce e pubarca precoce. RESULTADOS: dos 58 casos revisados, 28 tiveram diagnóstico de PPC, um de pseudopuberdade precoce, dez de telarca precoce e 19 de pubarca precoce. Todos os casos de PPC foram de origem idiopática, com exceção de uma paciente em que houve ativação do eixo hipotálamo-hipófise-ovariano secundária a hiperplasia adrenal congênita. Houve um caso com suspeita diagnóstica de pseudopuberdade precoce devido à síndrome de McCune-Albright. Todos os casos de telarca precoce foram de origem idiopática, exceto um caso que foi associado a hipotireoidismo primário. Todos os casos de pubarca precoce foram de origem idiopática. CONCLUSÕES: dentre os casos atendidos com diagnóstico de puberdade precoce no período de cinco anos, o diagnóstico final predominante foi PPC e a grande maioria dos casos foi de origem idiopática, havendo baixa incidência de patologias orgânicas.PURPOSE: to evaluate the classification and the etiology of girls attended in a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Clinic. METHODS: The hospital charts of 58 female patients attended from 2000 to 2005 with diagnosis of probable precocious puberty were reviewed and relevant data analyzed. Inclusion criteria were breast and/or pubic hair growth before eight years old. The girls were classified according to the clinic aspects and the supplementary exams they had been submitted to, into one of the categories: central precocious puberty (CPP), precocious pseudopuberty, premature thelarche and premature pubarche. RESULTS: from the 58 reviewed cases, 28 girls were diagnosed as CPP, one as precocious pseudopuberty, ten as premature thelarche and 19 as premature pubarche. All the cases of CPP had an idiopathic etiology, except for one girl whose activation of the ypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis was secondary to congenital adrenal hyperplasia. There was one case of precocious pseudopuberty due to McCune-Albright syndrome. All the cases of premature thelarche had an idiopathic etiology, except for one girl who had primary hypothyroidism. All the cases of premature pubarche had an idiopathic etiology. CONCLUSIONS: among the cases diagnosed as precocious puberty, CPP was the leading diagnosis and most cases had an idiopathic etiology. Organic causes leading to precocious puberty were infrequent.

The cortex is the intermediate region of the hair string where it is possible to modify the hair shape. In this region, we find the disulphide, the ionic and the hydrogen bonds. These bonds, when undergoing a change in their conformation, provide the necessary modification for hair straightening. Currently, there are two categories of hair straightening, the temporary, where the primary agents are water and heat, and the permanent, where highly alkaline active straightener products (pH > 9,0) and different mechanisms are used to modify the hair shape. Due to the range of the existing products containing these active hair straighteners in the market and the speed in which new products are launched by the cosmetics industry, it becomes relevant to know these active products and their action mechanisms. This knowledge contributes to the products safety and efficiency, besides avoiding the indiscriminate use of non-authorized substances by the sanitary agents, as some of the active straighteners can offer more risks to the health and the hair than others. Os cilindros capilares são pequenas formações tubulares branco-amareladas que envolvem completamente os fios de cabelos sem a eles aderir, de forma que são móveis ao longos dos cabelos afetados, sem provocar sintomas. Os autores apresentam três pacientes do sexo feminino acometidas dessa doença.Hair casts are small white yellowish keratinous structures that totally wrap the hair shaft. They are characterized by asymptomatic, semifirm, tannish, freely movable, cylindrical masses, distributed along the scalp hair. This condition has been found in three women, whose case histories are described.

Os autores apresentam caso de criança de dois anos, com história de cabelos negros e lisos ao nascimento que, aos seis meses de idade, desenvolveram alterações da textura e da cor, tornando-se mais claros e impenteáveis. A rara síndrome dos cabelos impenteáveis é caracterizada pelo surgimento de cabelos de crescimento lento, loiro-prateados, desordenados, em indivíduos com cabelos previamente normais. A microscopia óptica é normal e a microscopia eletrônica é diagnóstica. Não há tratamento efetivo.We report the case of a 2 year old girl, born with black and straight scalp hair. By the time she was 6 months old, hair color and texture changed to silver blond and became uncombable. The uncombable hair syndrome is a rare entity, in which scalp hair becomes dry and tousled after being previously normal in early childhood. Under light microscopy, hair may appear normal. With scanning electron microscopy the diagnosis can be reliably established. There’s no effective treatment.
