Objective: Investigar in the scientific literature, studies that report the factors that challenge the insertion of Paliativos Cuidados in the context of urgency and emergency, and the role of nursing in this scenario. Methods: This is an integrative review of the literature. The study was searched between November 2020 and January 2021, in seven databases: PubMed, Medline, ScienceDirect, LILACS, Scopus, Scielo and IBECS. Results: In general, it was observed that the main challenges for the insertion of Paliativos Care are linked to the fact that emergency units are agitated environments, which present a large flow of patients, providing little or no privacy, requiring a holistic view of the nursing team. Conclusion: It is possible to infer that there are several problems that surround care for patients in Palliative Care in the context of the emergency. While nursing care, this is not only based on end-of-life care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nurses need not only practical knowledge to apply Advanced Life Support (ALS) but also theoretical knowledge. Objectives: To assess nurses' theoretical knowledge of ALS in the care of critically ill people and to examine the relationship between nurses' theoretical knowledge of ALS in the care of critically ill people and their sociodemographic, academic, and professional variables. Methodology: A quantitative and descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 36 nurses selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Results: In the applied questionnaire, the nurses achieved a correct answer rate of 73.53%. Statistically significant differences were found between specialist nurses and their knowledge of emergency drug administration [amiodarone (t = 4.292; p = 0.038); and atropine (t = 4.912; p = 0.027)] and capnography monitoring (t = 4.788; p = 0.029). Conclusion: Nurses showed good levels of theoretical knowledge of ALS, and practical refresher training every 3 months is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The venomous animals that most cause accidents in Brazil are bees, spiders, scorpions, stinging caterpillars, snakes and wasps. These accidents can result in medical emergencies, requiring immediate care to reduce the chance of complications. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological profile of accidents caused by venomous animals in 18 cities in southern Brazil and describe the clinical profile of these accidents in the city of Sarandi - RS. The study included municipalities belonging to the micro-region of Carazinho-RS, from 2015 to 2019 and evaluated data available in the National Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN), in addition to medical records at the Community Hospital in the municipality of Sarandi, RS, in same period. At all, 607 notifications of accidents involving venomous animals were found, with an increasing trend in the number of notifications over the years. Male individuals were the most affected (59.7%) and the predominant age group was between 20 and 64 years (71.8%). The most affected sites were the extremities (94%). The most reported symptom was pain. Given the number of accidents, the results corroborate the knowledge of the specific epidemiology of the region, together with the treatment adopted by physicians aiming at a better accident prognosis. Objective. To identify correlations between COVID-19, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, and the capacity of Latin American health systems to respond to health emergencies. Method. An ecological study was performed using secondary data from 20 Latin American countries regarding incidence, mortality, testing and vaccination coverage for covid-19 from 2020 to 2021 as well as demographic and socioeconomic indicators. The preparedness of countries to respond to health emergencies was explored based on the 2019 State Party Self-Assessment Annual Report on the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR). Statistical analyses were performed using the Spearman correlation test (rho). Results. A high positive correlation was noted between gross domestic product per capita and the human development index with the incidence of COVID-19, testing, and vaccination coverage; and between the proportion of elderly population and vaccination coverage. No correlations were identified between the covid-19 indicators and previous IHR implementation capacities. Conclusions. The lack of correlation between indicators related to COVID-19 and the ability to implement the IHR may reflect limitations of the indicators used or of the IHR monitoring tool as an instrument that induces the preparedness of countries to face health emergencies. The results suggest the importance of structural conditioning factors and the need for longitudinal, comparative, and qualitative studies to understand the factors that influenced the response of countries to COVID-19. DISCRETE event simulation , *QUALITY of service , *MEDICAL emergencies , *AMBULANCES - Abstract
The Emergency Medical System of Ouro Preto and Mariana operates together, continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using four ambulances fixed located in three bases scattered throughout the region. Given the degree of uncertainty of the system coupled to the number of parameters capable of interfering in its efficiency, it is interesting to determine and evaluate indicators to make a diagnosis of the complete situation of the emergency system in the region in line with the service quality analysis. In this sense, this work proposes discrete event simulation models that, after validation, were able to analyze (1) the location of ambulance bases in centralized and decentralized configurations, (2) the behavior of the system in meeting the estimated real demand, (3) the performance of the system after the removal of an ambulance using two ambulance dispatch policies, and (4) the changes in system demand throughout the day. The results were able to point out the positive and negative technical features of each scenario, as well as any possible bottlenecks in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present report describes the implementation of an emergency operations center to coordinate the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Following the public health emergency management framework proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), this temporary center (COE COVID-19 RIO) started operating in January 2021. The report is organized along five themes: legal framework; structure, planning, and procedures; institutional articulation; health information for decision-making; and risk communication. Major advances obtained with the initiative include improvements in governance for the management of COVID-19, increase in the synergy among sectors and institutions, improved information sharing in relation to COVID-19 prevention and control measures, innovation in epidemiologic analyses, and gains in transparency and decision-making opportunities. In conclusion, even if conceived at an advanced stage of the pandemic in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, the COE COVID-19 RIO has played a relevant role in shaping the city's responses to the pandemic. Also, despite its temporary character, the experience will leave a lasting legacy for the management of future public health emergencies in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WATER shortages , *MEDICAL emergencies , *HEALTH of older people , *OLDER people , *DEHYDRATION - Abstract
This article discusses the emerging challenges in the management of dehydration in the elderly and its complex clinical repercussions. Recurrent dehydration in the elderly during medical emergencies is influenced by the physiology of aging, becoming more problematic due to decreased thirst response and behavioral changes. Dehydration in the elderly goes beyond water scarcity, triggering serious consequences in various organ systems. The study aims to develop effective management strategies, including the implementation of a dehydration protocol in the first aid room of the Alfredo Nasser University Center. Recognizing dehydration in emergencies is vital, given its association with life-threatening risks, making quick and effective interventions crucial to mitigate clinical repercussions and promote the overall health of the elderly. - Abstract
Emergencies in dental practice can occur unpredictably. The complications range from simple episodes to cases that threaten the patient's life. It is the obligation of the Dental Surgeon (DS) to know these emergencies and how to act on them. The objective of this study was to investigate the DSs of the Quixeramobim city on medical emergencies likely to occur in dental clinic. The study involved a group of 42 Dentists working in this region, as well as 20 students of the first semester and 20 of the last semester of graduation, and 11 teachers of the Catholic College Backland`s Queen (CUBQ or FCRS) Dentistry School. Data were collected through an objective and subjective questionnaire and the results are shown through graphics and tables, with the subsequent statistical analysis. Regarding to the knowledge about emergencies, within the limitations of the methodology applied, the DSs of the region showed the same level of knowledge that teachers and alumni of FCRS or CUBQ. However, professionals do not have the equipment to conduct a medical emergency care in their work environments and this study can conclude that DSs know the importance of medical emergencies knowledge, but the authors suggest the need of practical courses for better training of the professionals in the region. DRUG side effects , *DRUG interactions , *ADVERSE health care events , *MEDICAL emergencies , *EMERGENCY medical services , *HOSPITAL emergency services - Abstract
Objective: To identify the occurrence of potential drug interactions in prescriptions for adult patients admitted to the Emergency Department of Hospital São Paulo. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study. Its sample consisted of 200 medical prescriptions. The analysis of drug interactions was performed using the Drugs.com database, where they are classified according to severity of interaction as severe, moderate, mild and without interaction. Results: The number of drugs in prescriptions ranged from 2 to 19, and the average per prescription was 4.97 drugs. A total of 526 potential drug interactions were identified in 159 prescriptions (79.5%); in that, 109 were severe, 354 moderate, 63 mild interactions, and 41 showed no interaction. Conclusion: This study demonstrated potential drug interactions in 79.5% of prescriptions examined in the Emergency Department. Drug interactions can occur at any time when using medications and, during this working process, the nursing staff is involved in several steps. Therefore, training the nursing staff for the rational use of drugs can increase safety of care delivered to patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MATERNAL mortality , *PREGNANCY complications , *OBSTETRICS , *MEDICAL emergencies , *PUBLIC health , *WOMEN - Abstract
Maternal mortality is a complex issue and remains a serious public health problem. This paper aims to look at this phenomenon from the perspective of the right to health, noting that the option for bringing the discussion to the field of human rights provided an extension of its explanation and a clearer presentation to society. It presents brief history of the insertion of this theme in the global policy agenda, exploring national and international initiatives. The current situation of maternal mortality in Brazil is just the most visible face of the precariousness of the health care of women. The situation worsens when cases of severe maternal morbidity are considered, which affects a significant number of women. Despite the initiatives for the realization of the right to safe motherhood, there are few advances, and society must require the State to reverse the injustice against women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PSYCHIATRIC emergencies , *PSYCHOSES , *MEDICAL emergencies , *SCHIZOPHRENIA , *MENTAL health - Abstract
Objective: To review the literature regarding the diagnosis of first episode psychosis in the context of emergency psychiatry. Method: Review of empirical and review articles selected by electronic search in the database PubMed. Results: Specific features of emergency care -- single, brief and cross section assessment, and with little information -- may jeopardize the diagnostic process. These limitations can be circumvented by application of operational diagnostic criteria, the use of scales and structured interviews and a short period of observation, between 24-72 hours. Diagnoses of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychotic depression and delusional disorder developed in the context of emergency have good stability, but not the diagnoses of brief psychoticotic disorder, schizplhreniform disorder and schizoaffective disorder. First episode psychosis can occur in the course of the use of psychoactive substances, with relatively frequent maintenance of psychotic symptoms even after cessation of the use of the substance. The rational use of subsidiary tests may help the differential diagnosis of psychotic episodes due to general medical conditions. Conclusion: Diagnoses of first psychotic episode can be adequately performed during psychiatric emergencies, if routines are implemented based on scientific evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The risk of injury comes with sport participation. The functional limitation quite often comes from the instability originated from an articular injury. Proprioception is, in fact, a sum of reactions that result on a cumulative neural input into the Central Nervous System (CNS) of mechanoreceptors in the artiulations, ligaments, muscles, tendons and skin. Functional rehabilitation is an extension of normal physical therapy. Its purpose is to allow rapid recovery of the athlete to its high sports motor patterns. We will review injuries form various articulations in respect to proprioceptive training. There is a lot of evidence that proprioceptive training diminishes the incidence of some injuries, and that proprioceptive reeducation contributes a lot to the lost of fear and quick return to work, as well as to sport activities. The health applications aimed at monitoring patients remotely have reached great proportions with the advancement of wireless networks. This paper presents a study of performance evaluation of biosignal traffic, which was simulated the transmission of patient data in emergency situations. The simulation scenario considered the transmission of signals from an ambulance through wireless network and collected in a medical monitoring center. On the way to the hospital, while the mobile broadcast biosignals moved between areas covered by different network technologies, featuring vertical handover situation. Based on the minimum QoS requirements prevailing in the scientific community, the most important parameters in healthcare applications such as loss rate, delay, throughput and jitter were evaluated. Was still considered a minimum bandwidth required for transmission of vital signs, taking into account rates of known samples to physicians signs such as electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature and rate of oxygen saturation blood. To evaluate the performance, were carried computer simulations using an implementation of the IEEE 802.21 standard for the simulator NS-2. The simulated scenario used the networks of Wi-Fi and WiMAX technologies, mobile with multiple interfaces and nodes cargo, which made transmissions with constant rates. The results showed that the network technologies in use can meet the minimum QoS requirements for medical applications.

International audience; The work intends to unveil what is an urgency or a health emergency from two perspectives: that of users and that of public health professionals. The author shows a dynamic and complex universe based on an anthropological work carried out at the Faculty of Medicine of Marília, in São Paulo. These are medical decisions, often of paramount importance for the maintenance of life, often questionable from an ethical point of view. It is worth remembering that the book not only works with the doctor / patient dichotomy, showing the reader other actors involved in emergency work and revealing that medical actions are often preceded by small steps and peculiar attitudes of significant importance that cannot be ignored.
