Disteniinae é considerado nomen protectum e "Cométites" Blanchard, 1845 é considerado nomen oblitum. O status de Disteniinae é discutido em função das constantes modificações: família ou subfamília. Novantinoe is revalidated and Thomsonistenia is maintained in the synonymy of Distenia Lepeletier Audinet-Serville, 1828. The wing venation in Disteniini is discussed and described. Disteniinae is considered nomen protectum and "Cométites" Blanchard, 1845 is considered nomen oblitum, and the status of the group is discussed. Hovorestenia humeralis (Waterhouse, 1880) comb. nov. is redescribed and figured. New synonymy: Distenia mirabilis Villiers, 1959 = Oculipetilus pulcher (Melzer, 1926) comb. nov. Keys to American genera of Disteniinae, subgenera of Distenia and Elytrimitatrix, species of Oculipetilus, and species of Disteniazteca are added.
