This paper discusses one of the most important holy revelations that inspired the legal system of most civilized states. The Decalogue or Ten Commandments represents the foundation of the covenant relationship and the moral standards established by the sovereign God as a legal basis for the continuous relation with his people, Israel. In the first part of this paper we will point to the historical context in which the giving of the law on Mount Sinai took place, and will thus show that the covenant made with Moses was a continuance of the covenant lasting from Noah to Abraham. That being said, in this mosaic covenant, God keeps his 400 year old promise and gives laws and instructions intended to reveal his holy nature, while also establishing a moral, social and spiritual order for the Hebrew community. In the second part of this paper we will debate on the significance, purpose, structure and classification of the Mosaic law, thus attempting to define the concept of moral law. The Ten Commandments will be looked upon from three perspectives: the laws referring to a correct relationship with God, the laws related to work, and the laws related to society. The last part of our paper will focus on understanding and applying the Ten Commandments according to the new covenant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BIBLIOGRAPHY ,LEXICOLOGY ,RESEARCH teams ,PRAGMATICS ,SEMANTICS - Abstract
Sorin Stati was a prestigious Romanian scientist whose 54-year of scientific activity included 220 papers and 130 lectures. Born in Romania, he studied at the University of Bucharest and worked from the beginning as a member of large research teams within the Romanian Academy. Single and collaborative works written up until 1972 and published in the country were exceptional, decisively changing the movement of Romanian linguistic ideas. After 1972, when he emigrated to Italy, the distinguished professor held a second doctorate and a chair at the University of Bologna. From then until his death, through his works and throughout his activity, he opened new theoretical perspectives both in the study of syntax and pragmatics, dialogue, in the analysis of the 'transfrastic' relationships, lexicology and semantics. His ability to influence these fields lies in the volumes that the international academic community offered at the age of 65, but also in the number of articles and homage volumes dedicated to Sorin Stati after 2008, the year of his death. The publication of his works continued ten years after his death. I personally owe him a large part of my linguistic thinking, being decisively influenced by his wonderful and fertile ideas during the period when I was preparing my PhD thesis. The bibliography of Sorin Stati's works, as seen above, was made up of two incomplete editions, without being unified so far with his other works. That is what we intended in this article. In addition to the previous bibliographies, we record here the understandings, respectively the reviews of his works, but also the homage articles and volumes without which, we think, a bibliography of any scientist remains incomplete. MEMORY ,COLLECTIVE memory ,AUTHORS - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to underline the specificities of Theodor Fontane's work Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg as a place of remembrance – and subsequently of the places of remembrance it contains – as well as the importance that this very comprehensive text has until today for the cultural space of Berlin-Brandenburg. The paper highlights a dynamic of cultural memory that ranges from overlaying places of remembrance to the emergence of new ones. The project has been completed and illustrated with some walks undertaken by the author of the article in the footsteps of Fontane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The present work aims to focus on a number of articles selected by the interwar agents of the Department of National Security from the lines printed in Floarea de foc magazine, a magazine founded in Greater Romania, in the context of heterogeneous socio-political metamorphoses and the accelerated development of modern Romanian society. The present paper contributes to a qualitative analysis of how political power generated ideologizing identities in interwar publication texts. In order to diagnose the way in which the publication under the leadership of Sandu Tudor positioned itself in relation to the ideological and cultural imperatives of the time and to distinguish the nuances of the regimentation of journalists and intellectuals within the horizon of a political ideology, the analysis approached an interdisciplinary perspective, which would allow perceiving the distinction between the journalist's language and the interwar Security Department agent's language. Thus, we confronted the data obtained from the notes prepared by the interwar Security Department, found today in the files of the CNSAS Archive, with the information obtained from the set of articles published under the signature of the authors investigated by the state institutions, in order to penetrate beyond the objectives of the interwar Security Department work, which consisted in gathering different types of information. Also, the paper corroborated the intrinsic information obtained mainly from the textual analysis (at the semantic, syntactic and narrative level) with the extrinsic data (ideology, sociogram, social fields) provided, for the most part, from the socio-critical investigation of texts from the interwar press and Archive documents. - Abstract
This paper aims to present comprehensively, but not exhaustively, the role of Baptism in the life of the Christian and its implications both in the way of life of the human collective and in the life of each individual, i.e. in the moral dimension of this Mystery. The work of renewal associated with Christian baptism is essential in the life of the believer, inviting them to constantly review their beliefs, reaffirm their commitment to God and strengthen their connection to the Christian community. By continuing this process of spiritual renewal, the believer is guided to grow in holiness and wisdom, to strengthen his or her relationship with God and to manifest his or her faith in daily life. Thus, Christian baptism and its ministry of renewal are not just isolated events in the believer's life, but become fundamental pillars in his or her spiritual journey of transformation and salvation. The important points that this research will touch upon are: ancestral sin, the moral dimension of baptism, John's baptism and Christian baptism helping us to conclude that the application of baptismal knowledge in seen acts generates the idea of morality and bears the marks of the preaching of Christ in society. GREAT powers (International relations) ,ECONOMIC underdevelopment ,IMPERIALISM ,CONSERVATIVES - Abstract
This paper represents an evaluation essay regarding the position of Austria- Hungary within the Triple Alliance. Even though it was regarded as a great power, in this essay I argue that the weak link of the Triple Alliance was Austria-Hungary, as a result of its internal problems and strategic position. Austria-Hungary was a multinational empire, weakened by ethnic disputes and economic backwardness, as a result of a conservative style of rule by the Habsburg dynasty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Romanian criticism has tended to use generational framing to delineate the boundaries of local poetic paradigms, which has also been the case for the Generation 2000 and Generation post-2000. If in the 1980’s a discussion about a Romanian postmodernism was put into debate, in 2018 the question regarding the emergence of a Romanian poetry metamodernism arises. In this context, I intend to trace in this paper the nuances of generational debates in order to outline to what extent this methodology succeeds in describing the mutations and the characteristics of recent poetry. With the posthuman turn and the possibilities for the emergence of metamodernism being debated, my paper addresses, on the one hand, the viability of metamodernism in recent poetry, and, on the other, possible points of conjunctions of posthumanism and metamodernism. The posthuman turn encompasses the post-2000 generation, while local discussions have also proposed metamodernism as a label for the post-2000 generation. The question I start from is to what extent, theoretically, is our local poetry metamodernist in its sensibility and specificity, and to what extent does posthumanism fit into a metamodernist heuristic label. Although the debate remains open insofar as the Romanian theoretical field seems rather refractory to transnational theoretical fictions, what I observe in this article is that metamodernism, as theoretically proposed, can be a viable alternative to the crisis of critical discourse. This paper comparatively analyses the feminist problematic in the texts of four poets, two of them belonging to Romanian contemporary literature and the other two to Russian literature: Miruna Vlada - Elena Vlădăreanu and Oksiana Vasiakina - Anastasia Vekșina. The analysis starts from the ideas of the theorist Julia Kristeva, who studies female identity from the point of view of semiotics, anthropology and psychology. I will follow the predominant theme in the works of the aforementioned poets, feminist poets by self-definition and through their writings: the feminine outlook in the context of war, marriage, motherhood, the manifestation and survival of this perspective, observing the ideational and stylistic similarities and differences in the creations of the aforementioned poets. The aim of the paper is to uncover the universality of the female experience in contexts that may undermine it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starting from Asbjørn Grønstad’s concepts of bio visuality and the responsibility of forms, the paper analyzes the issues that arise when adapting self-fiction into film. It maps out how the concepts can be applied especially well to self-fiction and New Romanian Cinema, then applies them in a comparative analysis of Cezar Paul-Bădescu’s book, Luminița, mon amour, and Călin Peter Netzer’s movie adaptation, Ana, mon amour. The paper argues that whereas the book’s ambiguity succeeds in transmitting its central themes, the movie fails to faithfully adapt the central ideas due to an inadequate choice in form. Finally, the paper argues that the formal issues cause ethical faults which hinder the transnational effort and negatively influence the worlding process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper proposes an analysis of literature’s role in the current Romanian cinematographic context, starting from two case studies: After the Hills (2012) by Cristian Mungiu, based on the novel Spovedanie la Tanacu by Tatiana Niculescu Bran and Moromeții 2 (2018) by Stere Gulea, based on the novels Moromeții vol. II and Viața ca o pradă... by Marin Preda. The approach aims to carry out a comparative analysis regarding both the role played by the literary work in the cinematographic production as well as the valorization of the literary work through the film. In the current socio-cultural context, the artistic impact of a film creates the cultural premises for the propagation of a literary work to several types of audiences. Artistic products derived from literary works develop a series of issues regarding adaptation methods, aesthetic interpretation, and even artistic interference regarding the assimilation of a literary piece in relation to the cinematographic production. The paper presents two case studies to analyze how the literary work appears either as an adjunct to the cinematographic production or as a central element of the filmographic artistic exposition. These case studies are used to determine the role that the film industry has in the processes of internationalization, propagation, and even popularization of a literary work in a Romanian consumer society, which is dangerously far removed from the book industry. Thus, the scientific approach proposes an exploration of literary valorization through cinematographic artistic products in order to popularize and mediate literature in today's society. This paper aims to investigate the ideological mutations that occur by turning the written text into an adaptation, using the protagonists that play the role of the marginal, both in the novel and in the movie, facilitating the breakthrough in the peripheral universe. Transmedia reveals the construction of the same fictional word, but the shift lies in the swinging between ideological isms: progressivism and conservatism, capitalism and anti-capitalism. This study is focused on recent literature and its adaptations. Characters have got the same name, they live in similar universes, but the main aim of this paper is to identify the shifts that result from turning the written message into a visual one. The same “story” can take a different ideological turn, therefore, both creations must be taken into consideration, in order to comprehend the global message. The ”double-creations” chosen to illustrate this point are: Love Sick by Cecilia Ștefănescu, motivating this choice by the progressivism of the adaptation in contrast to the conservatism of the novel, concentrating on the queer component; I am an old communist hag! by Dan Lungu where the focus falls on the anti-capitalist view, whereas the novel concentrates on an anti-communism ideology; Soldiers by Adrian Schiop, a case where the movie diminishes the focus on the progressivism, shifting the prespective on the universal love story between Adi and Alberto. his paper aims to explore what might be the limits of what we call today Biographical Novel, framed as Biographical Fiction or Life Writing, research that has as its central objective to find an answer to questions such as: what might be the features of the genre and what purpose do they serve today? How do we relate to past personalities in the present context and what can we extract from their lives – can we talk about censorship/ attributing an unrealistic context to a public personality? But more importantly, what is the relationship between fact and fiction constructed, given that the boundary between these is very vulnerable? All these questions are meant to guide the readers throughout the study. Even if the genre is not so much in demand among writers today, probably for reasons related to the economy of time, such writing can become interesting to study how the author chooses to present someone’s life, a choice that must first be well documented, and then fully assumed, with full responsibility for the facts shown. The points on which the paper will focus are related to the novel of Moni Stănilă Brâncuși sau cum a învățat țestoasa să zboare, the biography Constantin Brancusi by Sanda Miller and the „On Constantin Brancusi” study written by Dore Ashton, where the construction of Constantin Brâncuși’s personality, as it appears in their works, will be contextualized in World Literature. PENTECOSTALISM ,DIVINE providence ,SEVENTEENTH century ,HUMAN beings ,REFORMED Church doctrines ,FEMINIST theology ,REFORMATION - Abstract
This paper attempts to analyze Jacobus Arminius's theology from a different perspective than usually addressed, in order to stress the merits of his theology. This is especially necessary because theologians like Calvin and Luther, both living in the same century, were given much more credit than Arminius, which in our opinion ill-favours both history and Arminius' theological work. Thus, this paper will mostly deal with the 16 and 17th centuries political and religious background, as well as the core of Arminius' theological input. We consider these parts to be essential for a holistic understanding of Arminius, and a proper understanding of these two sides can bring about a better understanding of his theological influence throughout history. These steps will reveal how one could come to appreciate his theological inquiries. The last part of our paper focuses on the influence of Arminius' theology especially on the Pentecostal movement. Although, in general, his theological influence is received pessimistically in contemporary theological circles, the present study strives to show the need to differentiate between Arminius' own theology and that of his successors. This step will hopefully inspire the reconsideration of Arminius' core theology, which, contrary to the popular understanding, does not emphasize the human being, but the person of God. This paper is a preliminary exploration of the question of literacy among women in Byzantium and the kingdom of Hungary, focusing on the types of writing that are most likely to indicate the participation of women in the written culture. The paper discusses the historiography of women’s literacy the Byzantine and Western areas and some examples of letters destined to noble women from the Banat are discussed. There are several private letters addressed to women dating from the 1360s. For example, the letters of the Himfi family show that women in this family received letters from the monarch, bishops, noblemen, knezes, and family members. By the second half of the fourteenth century there is evidence of common use of written communication through private letters among nobles, including noblewomen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper represents an analysis of the decision made by the Romanian political elites on 27 August 1916, namely to enter in the First World War on the side of the Entente, against the Central Powers, the former allies. The hypothesis that the present paper advances is related to the perceptions of the Romanian political elites at the moment of entering the First World War. Therefore, the Romanian political elites entered the First World War based on an assumed cult of the offensive, as a result of the confidence in the capacity of the Romanian army to inflict a rapid defeat to Austria-Hungary. As a theoretical framework, the research is based on the cult of the offensive theory. The research concluded that the decision taken by the Romanian political elites to enter in the First World War was based on an assumed cult of the offensive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our paper aims to reveal an inventory, an interpretation and a statistical analysis of Romanian names of plants which implicates the term „iarbă” (herb, grass), spread through the botanical terminology, a phenomenon which, as considered by E. Coşeriu is not enough highlighted (given that the individual speaker became creator of language / poetry whenever he named a flower. Botanical popular terminology has primarily a practical value, designating, distinguishing and categorizing elements of the plant kingdom within the given natural reign, but also has a high theoretical significance, especially for linguists, both by the ethimons to which they send back and by the metaphorical meanings the phytonims mostly have. Phytonys could be an important starting point in any kind of research, as they constitute a true linguistic and cultural heritage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our paper presents a series of theoretical reflections generated by the task of conducting anthropological research on food traditions and practices in a network of villages in Romania, in the context of restrictions on movement and social interaction during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was carried out as part of the Digital collection of Romanian food heritage and transfer to society - FOODie project. The pressure to respect both contractual deadlines in relation to the funder and health safety rules led us to the solution of online interviews. Due to the specific nature of our research, the people targeted by the interviews were aged and had minimal digital skills, which led us to call on a second member of the interviewed community, a PC user, who was ready to moderate the relationship with the informant and provide technical assistance. Based on these research experiences, we will discuss (a) the advantages and disadvantages of remote fieldwork; (b) the dynamics of the relation between the researcher and the respondent in this new methodological context; (c) the collaborative nature of the ethnological document, which is the result of the intersection of the researcher's thematic interests, her/his availability and skills and, in this case, the flair, intuition and persuasiveness of the actor mediating the meeting between the two. This paper explores the functions and multiple meanings of parenthetical constructions such as the incident constructions in I.L. Caragiale’s moments and sketches. As parts of the discourse, parentheticals are those expressions that are independent of the host sentence, which function as modifiers, additions to, or comments on the current talk. Even though they are often seen as linguistic ornaments, they play a crucial role in conveying additional information, clarifying ideas, or providing commentary within a sentence. Through a quantitative analysis, we aim to shed light on these linguistic categories to emphasize their importance in the construction of Caragiale’s texts and characters in what concerns the reported speech. - Abstract
The main objective of my paper is to present the sociopolitical circumstances of the creation of the rock-symphonic opera Meşterul Manole (2013), based on a libretto by Victor Cârcu and composed by Joseph Kappl (former member of the rock band Phoenix), its reception by contemporary society and its character as an intermedial work. In my study, I will use the tools of the intermedial approach, which will help me to describe and grasp the relations of transposition of the myth between different media that interact and influence each other in the opera under analysis. - Abstract
The present paper aims to model derivational networks (nests) of emotive verbs in Romanian, on the basis of the semantic-structural types of derivatives. First, we define the most important notions of the nest derivatology, we introduce the notion of derivational nest modelling and of semantic-structural types of derivatives, and describe the principles of the analysis. After that, the derivational nests of selected verbs and their formal-semantic analysis are presented, with semantic and formal aspects in the commentary after each nest. At the end, the matrix of models resulting from the juxtaposition of all nest models and the conclusions from the research are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is dedicated to the relationship between economy and the state in the postmodern world. The general idea of this article is that economy has lost its guiding role it was assigned at the beginning of the modern era. Whether it is the guiding function of money or the teaching role of production and the market alike, the economy – we are told by the great theoreticians and scholars of the modern age – plays a determining role in society's development. The economics approach to what we call substructal destruction makes us sensitive to those processes in the economy which, instead of leading mankind towards prosperity, bring ruinous destruction, i.e. damage the foundations of the world and therefore its order. Substructal destructions are those types of destructive processes that contribute to the fundamental ruin of a system (even of society with its established order). The currency is often lying, the market is downright sick, the flows are shaken by turbulence attested by uncontrollable volatility, the banks are breathing heavily, suffering from a kind of financial-banking asthma, the stock exchanges are hit by uncontrollable turbulence, by storms that herald crash after crash, the debt spiral is dizzying etc. All this describes the economic landscape of an alarming substructal destruction, and the present paper is dedicated to a focused analysis on how the substructal crises penetrate the society and heralds the end of what we may call a „historical world”. Tradition-brands are cultural constructs launched in Romania around the year 2000, which bring into play a repertoire of conventions and “myths” shared nationwide and proposed to the market, increasingly and more intensely in the late years, by large-scale industrial operators, who in this manner simulate and menace small-scale producers (those actually in the right to claim this tradition as their own). Previous work in the anthropology of consumption has theorized that commercial communication associated with tradition-brands represents a space of negotiation between the Big Industry and traditionalist consumers. The present paper resumes, after more than a decade, the previous thesis, with Mark Fisher's conflict theory tools. In this perspective, traditional brands are forms of Big Industry colonization and naturalization of artisan culture. The case analysis of the Matache Măcelaruʼ charcuterie brand reveals multiple levels of realist-capitalist processing of the commercial message. The key understanding of Fisher's theory of consumerism as a sensitive interface between the capitalist system and the public leads to sharp conclusions about the alienation and disintegration of social actors (consumers, small artisans and merchants) and about the removal of small businesses from the current economic landscape. The possibility of a breach in capitalist totalitarianism lies, hypothetically, in the Romanian public's inertia towards globalization. A conscious reaction is also needed, which arises from civic initiatives regarding the realization of a short producer-consumer chain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper has a twofold purpose: the first is related to the Pentecostal movement, a missionary movement in its essence, which evolved from a missionary understanding of the proclamation to a holistic mission. Our second purpose is related to the fact that the Protestant mission itself is a holistic one, and we argue this idea with two paradigms constructed by Protestant theologians. The Pentecostal movement is a missionary movement in its essence. Much of its theology is similar to Protestant theology in general and evangelical theology in particular. Therefore, when Protestantism split into conservative and liberal, Pentecostals chose to approach a fundamentalist thinking, which was entirely devoted to saving lost souls, without regard to the broader perspective of the individual. The question we should answer is: should Pentecostalism focus only on proclamation (evangelization) in order to save the soul from hell, or should it have a broader, holistic perspective? In this paper, we want to demonstrate that the Pentecostal mission must broaden its perspective and align with the thinking paradigms of the holistic mission of the last century, which it has done. The first thing we want to prove is that the evangelical mission itself was in its beginnings holistic in practice, even if in theory it did not seem to be so. Secondly, we will show that in Lausanne, in 1974, a shift took place when the Church accepted that Christ's mission was both proclamatory and oriented towards the incarnation. Thirdly, we want to develop two paradigms that start from two different theological concepts, but demonstrate the same thing: that the mission of the church is a holistic one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

STREET names ,SPATIAL orientation ,TOPONYMY ,POLITICAL agenda ,REGIME change - Abstract
In order to achieve their functional purpose – that of organizing the urban landscape and helping locating people and geographical objectives through an efficient addressing system – street names are bound to remain stable spatial landmarks. On the other hand, street names are also semiotic devices of signifying space with the political and commemorative agenda of the ruling power. This latter characteristic renders them vulnerable to successive renaming following important power-shifts and especially regime changes. What happens when the ideological imperative of politicizing the street nomenclature undermines its functional requirement of providing spatial orientation through extensive renaming? Such a tensional situation is examined in the case of postwar Sibiu between 1945 and 1948, when the city endured a thorough redefinition of its toponymy under the political regime of communist “popular democracy” in Romania. The paper quantifies the scope of toponymic revision and then evaluates the content of these street name changes in terms of three major concepts: class, ethnicity, and gender. Grounded on the results of this analysis, the paper advances the notion of “mercurial street names”. It concludes by arguing that such a concept should complement the existing metaphoricity underpinning the scholarship in place-name studies, which draw on “text”, “discourse”, and “palimpsest” to conceive of the processes of street (re)naming. Especially after the fall of communism in Romania, Romanian theatre artists were referring nostalgicallyvindictively to what they considered to be a recognition of the importance of their own activity: the inclusion of actors/performers in the categories of hard or harmful labor, just like miners, in the 1950s and generally before 1977. The legend of the similitude between actors and miners is, in fact, part of the symbolic competition with the industrial working class, in which intellectuals felt engaged especially in the 1980s and which played an important role then and in the following decade (a subject which I elaborate in a larger research). This paper investigates the factual basis of this narrative of State legitimation of cultural labor, starting from the legal codification of the miners' central position in the ideology and public discourse of the communist regime and exploring the wage and retirement conditions of (theatre) actors from 1948 until 1989, including through the lenses of their non-public positions, as reflected in the archives of the secret police. Part of a larger framework of the intelligentsia’s antagonism and lack of solidarity with the working class, which has been analyzed at length in post-communism but which tends to not include the specifics of the performing arts in the general cultural framework, it examines the foundations of the persistent discourse placing theatre artists (alongside writers, filmmakers, etc.) as the righteous beneficiaries of the post-1989 transition, aiming to replace miners at the center of the new, capitalist society. The strategic scientific management of cultural and research institution is put under scrutiny in the paper The strategic management of scientific research [Managementul cercetării științifice] by the author Meda Gâlea. To better improve the strategic scientific management, the author dives into the history of an important Romanian research institute, the Romanian Academy, and into its management style in relation to the research developed. To substantiate the results, and to support the development of the formula that underpins the decision-making process in the management of a scientific institution, the author uses actual scientific literature, corelated with the research carried out among the research and technical staff of the Romanian Academy in Iași. The most important takeaway of this scientific paper is the PRA-nX formula used to facilitate decision making in terms of economic management for better scientific performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decorative elements and accessories of clothing -- a set of symbols brought into individualized harmony and possessing a power of expressiveness many times greater than even linguistic ones -- are some social emblems that make it possible to reconstruct history at different stages of its development. Multilateral analysis of these products can provide important information about the socio-economic and cultural level reached by a particular community. In addition to the aesthetic function, clothing decorations carry the meaning of a complex communication system, reporting that its owner belongs to a certain ethnic group, social or age category; they manifest ideas of splendor, elegance, and refinement that existed in the environment where they were created. The National Museum of History of Moldova possesses a rich collection of ornaments and jewelry. It includes both adornments for body (rings, bracelets, earrings, pendants, beads, necklaces, hairpins, etc.) and for clothes (fibulae, sewn-on plaques, buttons, buckles, etc.). The subject of this article is the pafta buckles, which are of interest not only from an artistic point of view, but also due to their apotropaic significance. The diversity of the collection, as well as the degree of study of this category of objects, allowed us to consider in this paper only those pafta buckles, the shape and ornamentation of which testify to the Balkan and Oriental influence. The study highlights the functional and decorative significance of these buckles, touches upon aspects related to the technique and craftsmanship of their manufacture, analyzes the diversity and symbolism of ornamental motifs. MARRIED people ,CIVIL war ,WOMEN military personnel ,WAR ,HISTORICAL source material ,DAUGHTERS - Abstract
In the 17
th century, numerous wars were fought on the territory of Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania. Some were wars against foreign attacks; others were civil wars between different pretenders to the throne. Some conflicts were short-lived, while others dragged on for several years. This study presents the life of women during military confrontations. Women's destinies are traced at different stages of wars, from the beginning of hostilities to the establishment of peace. Representatives of different social categories mentioned in historical sources, without exception, came into the field of attention: from ruling strata ladies to commoners, from respectable wives, daughters and widows to women of easy virtue. The documents show that women and children who did not participate in hostilities were just as vulnerable as the men who fought. Women were abused, captured or killed by foreign soldiers. In internecine wars, the wives of opponents, being captured, became victims of revenge on their husbands or were used to blackmail them. Therefore, in the conditions of the outbreak of war, the first concern of men was to protect their families. The study shows that most of the women who left their towns to move to safe places belonged to the nobility. Common women mostly stayed at home and took care of their household. There were cases when the authorities forbade women to leave the besieged towns, as, for example, in Cluj in 1611 and 1704. Women had to be involved in the defense, and violation of the orders of the authorities was severely punished. Restoring peace brought other hardships for women. Many tried to free themselves from slavery. Others had to raise money to ransom captive husbands or sons. Many women became widows, forced to provide for their lives and the lives of their children, pay off debts left by their husbands, and fight for their rights, which were often vio- lated by family and society. Chronicles show that wars could not interfere with the normal course of life of civilians. Despite the need and un- certainty, people married and baptized children. Wars have brought much suffering to women from all walks of life. Although it was rooted in the mentality of the time that abuses against women were punished by the God, this did not stop many men from taking advantage of their vulnerability, especially in wartime. Women fell into slavery, died either by the sword, or from famine and disease that accompanied wars. Countless women in the 17th century became widows and had to fight for their own survival and the survival of their children in a hostile world torn apart by economic crises. The paper also examines the attitude of men of the 17th century towards the actions of women during military conflicts. Numerous documents and testaments reflect both negative opinions and manifestations of respect and gratitude of men in families and society to women for the trials they have endured.
