Thrombophilia is a disorder associated with an increased tendency to thrombosis. Thrombophilia can be acquired or hereditary. Only a few of the inherited thrombophilia present a major risk of thrombosis and they should be diagnosed when thromboembolic disease or miscarriages occur in pregnant women. It is important to know the personal history and the family history of the patients, to look for the cause of venous or arterial thromboembolism and to investigate the patients at risk in order to apply the prophylaxis and the anticoagulant treatment when necessary. A special attention should be given to patients with antiphospholipid syndrome, sometimes requiring anticoagulation indefinitely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
