The social institution of the family as an environment for the formation and evolution of gender roles is of particular interest for the study of Soviet society. The government controlled the private sphere of public life even in the late USSR. The media were an important social institution that influenced the construction of ideas about gender and reproduced images of desired models of family relations and the gender structure of society. Gender analysis can be used to identify popular stereotypes about masculinity and femininity, as well as gender family roles in the late USSR. In this paper, the author analyzes the materials of Soviet magazines and newspapers published from the late 1960-ies to the 1970-ies: the magazine for parents and teachers «Family and School», the popular science magazine «Health», the advertising magazine «New goods», the children’s magazines «Murzilka» and «Funny Pictures». These publications are aimed at different readership. This allows us to get a more complete picture of the real and desired models of masculinity and femininity in late Soviet society. As a result of the study, conclusions are drawn about significant discrepancies between the declared equality of women and men in Soviet society and the real gender structure. The representation of stereotypical models of family relations indicates contradictions in the peculiarities of male and female gender socialization, as well as in the gender differentiation of family and household functions of men and women.

The particular features of «White» Siberia population’s perception of American interventionists are considered in the paper on the basis of the analysis of the non-Bolshevik periodical press of Siberia and the Far East of the Civil War period. The paper attempts to reconstruct and analyze the image of American interventionists in the press, to define the degree of the influence of this image on the public opinion in Siberia and the Far East. The paper traces the evolution of the attitude of the Siberian and Far Eastern press to the American presence in the East of Russia, and concludes, first, of the gradual deterioration of the image of American soldiers in the press, and of the increasing antipathy towards them in the society. Second, the author makes a conclusion of the contradictory and ambiguous attitude of both the periodical press and the public to the American interventionists, which was reflected in a negative attitude to the American troops against the background of the positive perception of economic and humanitarian aid from the U. S.

Similar to fellow researchers occupied in the North Korean humanities and social science academic community, history experts commented on China-related issues on a regular basis, being influenced by negative trends in Sino-DPRK relationship in 2014—17. This four-year period produced at least 38 research papers, published in the history & law section of the Journal of Kim Il Sung University, thus highlighting the changes Pyongyang intellectual elites had experienced in their visions on China. Mostly, researchers shared their views on contemporary China by discussing the issues recorded in the ancient sources for Korean and Chinese mutual history. History scholars outlined the official bilateral agenda in their research works, but many experts made ambiguous proposals, and each year from 2014—17 became known for publications that had not complied notably with an official China policy. North Korean history research outcomes track uneasy developments in formulating a uniform China vision among DPRK’s intellectual and political elites. Papers dealing with Kim Il Sung’s written heritage are indeed prominent manifestations of shifts in the policy concerning Beijing.

Periodicals is a “mirror” of society. On the one hand, they reflect the social and cultural climate of a particular historical epoch. On the other one, retain the memory of the past times. Magazines and newspapers can influence the public opinion and provide feedback in the management of society through the prism of ideology and propaganda, thereby serving the interests of the state. This paper considers collector periodicals of the Soviet Russia in the first half of the 1920s. During this period, all printed materials were either private or state-owned. The publishing development and the editorial attitudes in the collector periodicals of that time were determined by the Soviet reality and reflected it. For this reason, the Soviet collector periodicals, including philatelic magazines, serve as an invaluable source of evidence of the growing pressure produced by the party policies in propaganda, agitation, and publishing industry. A number of periodicals that received little support from the state were unable to engage in any pro-active resistance. In the early 1920s, the number of collector periodicals rocketed. By the end of 1922–first half of 1923, the dialog between them finally turned into a monologue of one edition promoting the positions of the state. As a result, the privately owned collector magazines disappeared. The remaining magazine turned out to perform mostly ideological and educational functions. Therefore, the general tasks and problems of collecting, in particular the philatelic ones, were replaced by the vital economic problems making the collector periodicals a tool used for bringing up an ideal Soviet person.

The debris flows are fairly poorly known risk phenomena in Bulgaria. The paper presents contemporary knowledge and methodology for classification of the hazardous water flows as well as the environments and geomorphological expression of debris flows. Our analysis of published data and our own observations clearly indicate that this type of processes is widespread and disastrous flows can be expected in near future. It is well known that the debris flows hazard estimation is complex task requiring knowledge in wide specter of Earth Sciences. The recognition of the problem and the delineation of most hazardous areas can be regarded as a first step in risk estimation (assessment). One of the methods providing fast risk estimate is the morphometric analysis of the relief. With the advance of the Geographical information systems and the digital elevation models the quantitative estimate of the relief has been significantly improved and is starting to become routine procedure. This methodology is applied to the well-documented debris-flow occurrence - the eastern part of Zlatitsa graben. The estimates of four morphometric parameters along with the data from the field investigations (sedimentological analysis of the deposits, geomorphological studies, etc.) demonstrate the existence of significant danger from future debris flows in this area. One of the most significant obstacles for creation of reliable hazard assessment is the lack of precise, quantitative chronostratigraphy of Pleistocene-Holocene sediments (and frequency of hazardous processes). In 2018, the journal Sociološki Pregled/Sociological Review celebrated its 80th anniversary. The first Serbian sociological journal Društveni Život/ Social Life was published in Belgrade in 1920 and 1921, and then renewed in 1930 in Novi Sad. The editor-in-chief and publisher of this journal was Mirko Kosić, a professor at the Faculty of Law in Subotica. After establishing Society for Legal Philosophy and Sociology in 1935 and Society for Sociology and Social Sciences in 1938, a new sociological journal - Sociological Review , edited by a professor from the Faculty of Law in Belgrade, Đorđe Tasić - began to be published. Thematically it covered various sociological disciplines and other social sciences for sociology is a multidisciplinary science. The work of the Sociological Society and the journal was interrupted by the II World War, in which Đorđe Tasić was killed. Other members of the Society for Sociology and Social Sciences and associates of Sociološki Pregled were no longer interested in sociology and sociological topics. Sociološki Pregled was renewed in 1961 by the Serbian Sociological Society, first as a collection of papers and then as a journal in 1964. Since then, the journal has been an active participant of scientific and academic life in this region providing an overview of current trends in sociology in the world and in our country. The intellectual elite of Serbia has participated in its publishing both directly and indirectly, both its oldest and prominent members and the youngest ones. About 200 issues of Sociološki Pregled with more than 30,000 pages were published from 1938 to 2018 and present a valuable material for sociological life and an irreplaceable information manual on decades of contemporary history of Serbia and Yugoslavia. Such a role could not have been played by any other journal. Sociološki Pregled is a theoretical journal, a manual, an informative newsletter, a reminder, a witness, an informer - all at the same time. That is why it is necessary to consider the journal in both historical and contemporary perspectives.

The paper looks at the Latvian translation scene at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It is a continuation of the study of translation history in Latvia reflected in previous issues of Vertimo studijos (vol. 7, 8, 11). These decades are marked by a huge growth of translation, especially in periodicals. German was gradually losing its dominant position as a source and intermediate language, Russian was advancing, so was also the scope of other languages. In contrast to previous periods there was a particular interest in the quality of the originals and modernity. This period also saw a change of generations among translators, and women became visible in translation scene. Translators among whom there were all the great Latvian writers gradually emerged as professionals. Frequently translations had prefaces and explanations by the translators. There were numerous parallel translations of the same works, some reaching up to ten versions. Translations included various genres and the traditional Latvian interest in plays was very obvious. So was the focus on specialised literature on agriculture. The translation method changed from localisation to a fidelity mode with a tendency to apply elements of foreignisation.

The article presents the publications in the periodical “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” and the literary almanac Podarok bednym in the light of the development of charity in Russia (motives, forms, results): 1. The publications of Alexander Sturdza (About social charity, About private charity), Pyotr Shalikov etc.; 2. The charity institutions in the capital and the provinces; 3. The charity initiatives of women and the Russian writers. “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” (the monthly magazine) was published in St. Petersburg from 1817 to 1826. It contained, among other elements, information and reports about the activity of philanthropists and charity institutions, and literary works (Hymn to love for a man by Pyotr Shalikov). Podarok bednym was published in Odessa in 1834 (the motto was a quotation from the Aeneid by Vergil: “Miseris succurrere disco”) by a women’s benevolent society. It contained the commentaries and works of belles-lettres. The paper compares “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” and Podarok bednym (the “common places”, for instance the articles by Alexander Strudza About social charity published in “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” in 1817 and in Podarok bednym in 1834). It presents also the discussions about charity in the Russian periodicals in the first half of the 19th century.

The paper focuses on the emotional aspect of renewing the celebration of the Day of Holders of St. George’s Cross and the practice of conferring St. George’s Orders in the White army in the East. The author comes to a conclusion that the authorities were not able to create an award system, complying with the demands of the Revolution period. Renewal of the Imperial award system, in spite of the propaganda, did not create a proper emotional effect on the army and еру civil population. It undermined the prestige of the authorities among some military men and civilians and made it possible for the opposition to blame the authorities of restoration strategy.

In the second half of the 80s of the twentieth century communist omnipotence that prevailed in the Soviet Union during the seventy years put the country regularly in the framework of the system of social and economic crisis. In making efforts to keep the pro-government monopoly the Central Commitee of CPSU dares to introduce redecorating of the economic mechanism of the Soviet Union in implementing the policy of acceleration. However, its negative results made the Communist Party elite resort to deepen innovations and apply reforms in the political system of the Soviet Union, known at that time as reconstruction perestroika. Having caused the general public democratization, it called to a policy of openness, which brought out the numerous communist crimes of the past decades that greatly weakened the Communist Party regime. This led to the revival of democracy, and eventually the national liberation movement in the western regions of the USSR, especially in Halychyna and its components - the Pre- Carpathians, where the state-forming bases have deep historical roots. The speaking trumpet of establishment of the communist regime was the Communist Party press, which in this period has launched a massive advertising campaign for undeniable expediency of reconstructive innovations. However, the rapid growth of the national liberation movement led openly to opposing the Communist Party media at all levels, trying to stop a national renaissance in Pre-Carpathians. The opposing range included both promotional measurements and intimidation pressure of power structures. The opposition at that time consisted of illegal anticommunistic publications and periodicals of newly appeared Soviet institutions. Objectively covering events they were promoters of striving patriotic-oriented public of the land to restore the state independence of Ukraine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
