Abstract

Noninbred male guinea-pigs (b. mass 250-300 g) were kept for 35 days on diets in which 50% of standard proteins were replaced for cow milk protein (CMP) 20/80 and its enzymatic hydrolyzate (EH) 20/80 obtained by ultrafiltration. CMP 20/80 and EH 20/80 have been examined for the effect on proteolytic activity of gastric mucosa, small intestinal activity of trypsin and chymotrypsin, hepatic cytochrome P-450 and metabolism of excreted 17-OCS. The animals given EH 20/80 exhibited enhanced total proteolytic activity of trypsin and chymotrypsin, higher total levels of cytochromes P-450 and P-450B in the liver, increased urine excretion of 17-OCS, reduced amount of polar forms in all the glucocorticoid fractions. Potential mechanisms securing the action of enzymatic hydrolyzates on the systems responsible for nonspecific resistance to food allergens are suggested for discussion.

Abstract

Two groups of noninbred male guinea pigs (initial bw 250-300 g) received test rations in which 50% of standard ration protein were substituted for milk protein (P 20/80) and its enzymatic hydrolysate (H 20/80). The influence of P 20/80 and H 20/80 on some parameters of the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) barrier function and 17-OCS metabolism was studied. The action of H 20/80 as compared to P 20/80 was expressed in the intensified excretion of free fraction of 17-OCS and glucuronides. The content of hydroxylated glucocorticoids increased in both fractions. At the same time elevated total proteolytic activity in the gastric mucosa and a tendency to decreased GIT permeability for chicken ovalbumin macromolecules were observed in animals that received H 20/80. It has been suggested that enzymatic hydrolysates of food proteins influence endocrine regulation of metabolic processes.

Abstract

The results of biochemical examinations of the hormonal function of the adrenal cortex in 22 patients with Parkinson's disease are presented as seen prior and following stereotaxic operations on the ventro-lateral nucleus of the thalamus. It was found that parkinsonics have a decreased androgenic, glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex. Long history and growing severity of the disease manifest themselves in a distinct inhibition of the adrenal cortex function. The importance of the changes in the functional state of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system in the revealed disorders in the hormonal activity is emphasized. Along with a beneficial clinical effect surgery brings about an improvement of the functional state of the adrenal cortex.

Abstract

By-products of the transformation were studied, which were formed in the process of 11alpha and 11beta-hydroxylation of 21-acetate of the Reichstein substance "S" by the culture of Tieghemella orchidis. The following steroid derivatives, known before, were isolated: epihydrocortisone, 6beta-hydroxy derivative of the Reichstein substance "S", hydrocortisone, cortisone. The following steroid derivatives were isolated from the initial chloroform extract of the fermentation medium, and identified: prednisolone, androstendione, testololactone, and 1,2-dehydro derivatives of the Reichstein substance S" and its 21-acetate. The quantitative ratio between the products of transformation depended on the conditions of growth and transformation. These compounds seem to be intermediate metabolites in the course of the steroid destruction via the pathway common for fungi and involving the destruction of D ring of the steroid molecule.

The review of the reported data indicates that endocrine glands react to the constant magnetic field (CMF). The paper presents information about the phasic pattern of hypophyseal-adrenal reaction and CMF effects on the sympathoadrenal system and thyroid. The review refers to many publications demonstrating high sensitivity to testes of the CMF. The paper discusses potential therapeutic applications of the CMF with emphasis on the fact that most morphological data available need biochemical support.

Abstract

In administration to quinea pigs of ethyl-p-chlorophenoxyisobutyrate daily in a dose of 0.2 g/kg per os for 15-26 days decreased the 17-OHCS concentration in the peripheral blood plasma. A fall of the urinary excretion of individual 17-OHCS occurred chiefly at the expense of free unchanged cortisol, tetrahydrocortisol and tetrahydro-11-desoxycortisol. The zona fasciculate displays the abundance of the sudanophilic material. A test with ACTH demonstrated that the present functional reserves of the adrenal cortex failed to change under the effect of the preparation. The content of NEFA decreased in the blood serum; as to cholesterol level - it reamined unchanged. Possible mechanisms of the action of the preparation and prospects of its use for the treatment of hypercorticism are discussed.

Abstract

Based on the conceptions of the relationship between energy and adaptation-immunological systems a number of hormone-metabolic indices were compared with immune reactivity as evidenced by skin tests and rosette-formation reaction. It is shown that lowering of immunological indices in oncological patients is associated with a decreased sensitivity of dexametasone suppression of cortisol, an increased concentration of 11-oxycorticosteroids in blood, a higher level of triglycerides, cholestrol, beta-lipoproteins and less glucose tolerance. The use of phenformin during 3 months in patients with atherosclerosis resulted in a considerable increase of the index of phytohemagglutinin stimulated blasttransformation of lymphocytes and rosette-formation reaction. This effect was associated with normalization of lipid metabolism indices.

Abstract

The results of study of the hypothalamo-hypophysio-adrenal system in patients with Itsenko-Cushing's disease under the influence of high reserpine doses are presented. An increase of plasma ACTH and cortizol level and disturbance of the 24-hour rhythm of their secretion was noted in the patients. High reserpine doses led to the fall of ACTH and cortizol secretion, without any normalization of their secretion rhythm in the course of 24 hours. A test with metopyron carried out before and after the reserpine prescription pointed to the increase of the ACTH reserve under the influence of high reserpine doses.

Abstract

A study was made of the content of cortisol, corticosterone, 11-deoxycortisol, estradiol, testosterone and progesterone in the blood plasma using radioimmunoassay and of the content of these hormones or their main metabolites in the daily urine using physicochemical methods in 77 patients with an active stage of the Icenko-Cushing disease. An acute increase in cortisol secretion, a noticeable rise of progesterone secretion, and significant deviations in testosterone production having opposite nature in men and women were established: in men androgen content in the body was lowered, in women raised. The adrenals were shown to be the main site of testosterone and progesterone secretion in female patients. One-type disorders of the rhythm of secretion of hormones determined during one day (disappearance or reduction of daily variations) were revealed.
