We conducted a comparative study of NO-ergic system in the CNS of 10 species of crustaceans subclass Malacostraca, belonging to orders Stomatopoda and Decapoda, with a common habitat in Ussuri Bay (Sea of Japan). Both similar characteristics and differences in content and distribution of universal NO-synthase (uNOS) were revealed in homologous parts of the brain and ventral nerve cord of the investigated species of crustaceans. We discuss the involvement of nitric oxide in the regulation of physiological functions of decapod crustaceans and its role in the processes of adaptation to the environmental conditions.

Approaches to the identification of radiation, chemical and combined effects on natural populations of aquatic organisms are proposed. These approaches are based on generalization of our previous experimental data concerning separate and combined effects of ionizing radiation and chemical mutagens (heavy metals and chlororganic compounds) on crustaceans and fishes embryos, as well as on results of field studies carried out before and after the Chernobyl NPP accident. For the identification of damaged factors it is proposed to use the following criteria: a comparison of cytogenetic effects in mutagen equivalent doses, a distribution of chromosome aberrations in cells and a number of aberrations per an aberrant cell.

The genome of aquatic animals is poorly understood and information from different taxonomic groups is sketchy. While there have been intensive genomic studies on some fish models, investigations on other fishes and invertebrates have been scarce. Yet there are recently some coordinated studies on genome mapping in a number of aquaculture animals of economic importance. This review summarizes information available on genome mapping of the important fish models and aquaculture animals. The future perspectives of this field of studies are discussed.

Chromosomal radiosensitivity inferred from the yield of chromosome aberrations (CAs) was for the first time studied in Cyclops (Crustacea, Copepoda) before and after chromatin diminution (CD). A comparison was made for C. kolensis, in which CD denudes somatic embryo cells of the greatest (94%) DNA amount known for multicellular organisms, and C. insignis, which lacks CD. The two species have similar genome sizes, 4.6 and 4.3 pg. respectively. Radiosensitivity of C. kolensis chromosomes proved to be extremely high during prediminution cleavage divisions. This was attributed to membrane damage in granules that contain enzymes (topoisomerases) normally involved in cleavage and ligation of chromosomal DNA during CD.

In studying the pattern of chromosome aberration distribution among hydrobiont cells in experimental and natural populations, it has been found that the Poisson distribution of chromosomes among cells occurs under the effect of ionizing radiation and under the combined effect of radiation and a chemical mutagen with a higher efficiency of the former. With the comparable efficiencies of both factors and with the effect of a chemical mutagen alone distribution of chromosome aberrations among cells resembles the geometrical one to a greater extent.

The chromatine diminution (CD), first discovered by Boveri (1887) in ascarids, represents programmed elimination of a part of genetic material in the nuclei of the somatic cells in cyclops and ascarids, and in the protist macronuclei. The CD can be considered as a macromutation sharply changing chromosomal structure, though minimally effecting the phenotype. The analysis of CD is of significance for discussing mechanisms of origin of chromosomal organization, transformation of genome molecular structure in eucaryote evolution, role of the extra DNA.

Assuming a hypothesis on the existence of certain mathematical analogy between the work of the genetic apparatus of Metazoa cells and that of universal computer a number of predictions are advanced (which can be in principle tested experimentally) as to the functioning of this genetic apparatus. Presence of multicellular regions in DNA without semantic information in the form of proteins is explained; possible results of damage of these regions are predicted, existence of some objects moving along DNA and possessing a number of unusual properties as compared with the studied objects of this type is predicted.
