Liver transplantation is an important treatment for end-stage liver disease, but donor shortage is becoming increasingly apparent, so donation after cardiac death (DCD), which is suitable for the national conditions of China and consistent with international standards, is an important measure for easing the organ shortage at the present stage. The tortuous development process of international DCD liver transplantation, including the definition and classification, ethical principles, indications, acquisition program, donation cases, and clinical results, is reviewed. It is considered that DCD donor liver is a solution to current donor shortage in liver transplantation in China. With the development of DCD liver transplantation, it wiil become an important part of liver transplantation in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
