Microbiological and chromato-mass-spectrometric examinations were made in 53 patients with chronic maxillary ethmoiditis and 52 patients with chronic tonsillitis. The microflora showed strong resistance to unprotected penicillines and cephalosporins, 100% sensitivity to amoxicilline clavulanate and mupirocine. The role of opportunistic microflora as pathogens of ENT inflammation is growing as well as the percentage of anaerobic microorganisms detected chromato-mass-spectrometrically in chronic inflammation. Administration of mupirocine on polyethylenglicol base early after operation in patients with chronic maxillary ethmoiditis accelerated recovery of the study group patients by 2-3 days vs control patients.

146 patients were subjected to radical operations on the maxillary sinus with opening of the ethmoidal labyrinth cells. The superior effect of postoperative insertion of the latex tampon over gauze turunda was seen. Effective were also analgetics-antipiretics (paracetamol) and tactivin as medical correctors of early postoperative symptoms.

This paper presents the results of treatment of 81 children, aged 5 to 14 years, suffering from exudation ethmoid sinusitis; isolated ethmoid sinusitis was diagnosed in 17.8% and ethmoid sinusitis combined with maxillary sinusitis was detected in 61.7% cases. Most sinusitis cases (82.7%) were diagnosed in 5 to 10 year-old children. The ethmoidal labyrinth and maxillary sinus were treated by the puncture method, infection of other paranasal sinuses being excluded by the application of antibacterial, enzymic, corticosteroid drugs, immune agents, and adenotomy. Antibiotic therapy of 2 weeks in duration applied to the ethmoid labyrinth and maxillary sinus was more efficient when compared to the sinus treatment alone. The stable clinical effect was seen in 86.4% cases. This therapeutic approach can find application in practical otolaryngology.
