Nowadays, the popularity of e-cigarettes is growing rapidly. Manufacturers of e-cigarettes advertise them as a less harmful option than traditional cigarettes, suggesting that their use can help reduce nicotine dependence and reduce the risk of smoking-related diseases. However, studies indicate that inhaling the chemicals in liquids can carry serious health consequences, particularly concerning the oral cavity Many of these preparations contain substances about whose effects we do not yet know enough, which raises concerns among public health professionals. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of e-cigarettes, including their popularity, the origins of their development, the substances they contain and the impact they have on oral health, which is most at risk from the harmful effects of e-cigarettes.

Nicotine is one of the major constituents of different types of smoking and is the more toxic part also. Thirty metals including chromium and some chromium compounds have been detected in tobacco smoke are causally associated with cancer in humans. In the present investigation, we evaluate the individual and combined effect of nicotine and chromium (VI) on the toxicity of liver in animal. In this study, a group of male albino rats (80-100 g) were induced by intraperitonial injection of vehicle (0.9% NaCl), nicotine tartrate (0.2 mg / 100 g body weight / day), K2Cr2O7 (0.8 mg / 100 g body weight / day), and combined exposure of K2Cr2O7 and nicotine tartrate at an interval of six hours for a period of 28 days. After the treatment the liver tissues were collected to measure the hepatotoxicity. It was showed that individual and combined exposure of chromium (VI) and nicotine marked decreased the activities of GOT, GPT, ALP and LDH in liver tissue. It was also noted that the level of MDA, CD and NO production increased significantly in response to individual and combined exposure of nicotine and chromium. On the other hand, it was observed that individual and combined exposure of nicotine and chromium (VI) marked decreased the GSH and GSSG content, and also the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx, GR and GST) in tested organ. The present study suggests that nicotine and chromium exhibited significant changes during individual exposure whereas co-exposure showed a marked alteration of the toxicity of liver in male albino rats.

Smokeless tobacco products are products that do not require a pyrolysis process and / or the production of tobacco aerosol (smoke) at the time of use. In the absence of data on the toxicological risks of smokeless tobacco, their consumption is potentially on the rise. The variety of non-smoking tobacco products creates certain problems in identifying chewing tobacco and sucking tobacco (banned for sale in the Russian Federation) as products that are identical in terms of physiological effects, method of consumption, and component composition. A methodology has been developed for a comprehensive assessment of non-smoking products, including the determination of consumer properties and technological indicators by instrumental methods, as well as the determination of the level of toxic components (nicotine, TSNA, B(a)P). The difference between the types of smokeless tobacco is mainly in the granulometric composition of the product: snus – finely ground tobacco, chewing tobacco – snatches of tobacco with a removed middle vein. Identification indicators have been determined: the presence of raw tobacco, the size of its particles and the number of large fragments in the finished product. The presence of raw tobacco can be determined by optical microscopy and/or luminescent analysis, and the quantitative content can be determined by sieve analysis. The quantitative content of the coarse fraction in chewing tobacco (not less than 15 %) is the main indicator of the product. The use of the fractionation method makes it possible to differentiate between sucking and chewing tobacco. A «Method for determining the fractional composition of non-smoking tobacco products for oral consumption by the method of sieve analysis» was developed (Certificate No. 022-01.00281-2013-2022). To certify the methodology, a set of studies was carried out, the data were obtained as a result of five parallel measurements by three performers for each sample. The technique is registered in the State Register of Measuring Instruments (FR.1.31.2022.43935 of 09/02/2022). Technological indicators of SLT samples were established: humidity (11,4-53,3) %, pH level 5,7-9,7, coarse fraction content (0,4-56,9) %, dust fraction content (0,2-76,3) %. The results of identification of commercial samples of a segmental product are presented.

Introduction and purpose: E-cigarettes have emerged as an alternative to traditional tobacco smoking. Toxicological studies have investigated the composition and potential toxicity of e-cigarette liquid components. While they are generally considered less harmful than combustible cigarettes, cases of poisoning associated with e-cigarette liquid ingestion or exposure have been reported. Brief description of the state of knowledge: Nicotine intoxication resulting from e-cigarette liquid ingestion can lead to a range of symptoms and complications, including cardiovascular effects, neurological symptoms, gastrointestinal disturbances, respiratory issues, and even death. This report presents a case of a 58-year-old woman hospitalized in the Toxicology and Cardiology Department due to poisoning with e-cigarette liquid. Conclusions: Accidental or intentional ingestion and/or injection of e-liquid is becoming a new emerging challenge for Emergency Medicine, mainly because of the easy accessibility of advertisements and the sales of e-cigarettes online, and the high nicotine concentration in e-liquids. It is important to report instances of e-liquid-related nicotine intoxication in order to improve the legal restrictions on the sale of e-liquid.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in the world. Effective treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disorders is impossible without the risk factor correction. Smoking remains the most important modifiable risk factor of cardiovascular diseases. The expert council held a meeting on November 15, 2022 aimed at discussing the modern possibilities and the importance of tobacco addiction treatment in patients with cardiovascular disorders.

Products from rolling smoking tobacco, they are also “hand-rolled”, are currently a trending phenomenon in the development of the tobacco products market, both in the Russian Federation and abroad. In view of the fact that maximum allowable values for the content of nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide in smoke are set for cigarettes, manufacturers produce tobacco blendings for cigarettes with a high content of components such as reconstituted tobacco and extended stem, on the one hand, regulating toxicity, and on the other hand, reducing flavoring properties. This leads to the fact that modern cigarettes, in terms of taste and aroma of tobacco smoke, poorly meet consumer taste preferences. By creating products from rolling smoking tobacco, combining different types of tobacco, using paper for self-rolling paper of different composition and breathability, as well as changing the mass of tobacco and the diameter of the product, the consumer can create an ideal product that meets all his taste preferences. In connection with the growing popularity of hand-rolled cigarettes, the relevance of research on their qualitative characteristics is growing. This article discusses such qualitative characteristics as the chemical composition and technological properties of samples: raw tobacco; tobacco blendings with and without a vein; rolling smoking tobacco of various brands. The main purpose of the research is to study the influence of the design of the product (diameter, weight, air permeability of paper) on the tasting assessment. For each type of smoking tobacco, products (hand-rolled) of various weights and diameters have been made, using four types of paper, differing in composition and air permeability. The dependence of the tasting evaluation of products from rolling smoking tobacco on the air permeability of the paper and the design features of the products (fiber width, weight and diameter of the products) has been established.

Hookah tobacco is positioned as a “nicotine alternative” to traditional smoking, but the aerosol produced contains the same toxic components as cigarette smoke.Consumer properties and safety indicators of tobacco aerosol for hookah depend on the component composition of the tobacco mixture and the coal used. The main factor that has a physiological effect on the user of hookah tobacco or non-tobacco mixture for heating is the content of nicotine that passes into the aerosol.There is no single approach to the regulation of a segmental product, in addition, there are no standardized methods for generating and collecting aerosol. The smoking pattern on a laboratory smoking machine does not fully reflect the behavioral profile of a person, however, the quantitative composition of the aerosol obtained from machine testing can be used as input to determine the risk of the product.During the research, laboratory and analytical equipment was used: CERULEAN SM 405 linear smoking machine; "Expert-001-1(0.1)" ionomer, SF-16 spectrophotometer, Crystal 2000M / HP 5890 Series 11 chromatograph with FID.Experimental data have been obtained to evaluate consumer and physic-chemical parameters, including organoleptic evaluation, the content of nicotine, glycerin and propylene glycol in samples of tobacco for hookah / non-tobacco mixture for heating.The method of machine generation and collection of the solid-liquid phase of an aerosol has been standardized, which makes it possible to obtain reliable data on the quantitative content of nicotine in the produced aerosol. The content of nicotine in the samples is 0.1–1.9%, the transition of nicotine into the produced aerosol is insignificant.The microscopy method for determining the structure of the base (carrier) in combination with the determination of consumer properties (organoleptic evaluation, total content of glycerol and propylene glycol, pH and nicotine content) are tools for identifying tobacco or non-tobacco hookah products.

Introduction: One of the biggest public health threats in the world is tobacco epidemic. According to WHO in the world cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use. In the 2018 report of the World Health Organization (WHO), smoking was recognized as one of the main risk factors responsible for premature mortality due to non-communicable diseases. According to the Global Burden of Disease, estimates smoking causes almost 8 million deaths in 2019 worldwide. In Poland about one-quarter of adults smoke cigarettes. As a result, scientists are constantly looking for medications that could help people quit smoking. The aim of the study: The aim of our study is to present medication which are used for treating nicotine dependence nowadays. Moreover, we give attention to social and economic consequences of tobacco use. Materials and methods: The literature available on PubMed and Google Scholar was reviewed using the words: “smoking”, “smoking cessation”, “nicotine”, “nicotine replacement therapy”. Description of the state of knowledge: Exposure to tobacco smoke is a dominant factor in the incidence of many cancers as well as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Therefore, improving smoking cessation interventions is critical to reducing tobacco use and helping to minimize the burden of cancer and other diseases for example chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Conclusions: Smoking cessation has a positive effect on health. Nicotine replacement therapy, Bupropion, Varenicline and Cytisine are used to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms in regular smokers who abstain from smoking.

Stroke in young patients is a disease based on a number of known specific non-modifiable factors (extracranial artery dissection, thrombophilia, open oval hole, etc.) and modifiable factors (alcohol abuse, drug use, smoking, etc.), in combination leading to the development of pathology. Smoking is a generally recognized modifiable risk factor for stroke, which is directly proportional to the number of tobacco-containing products smoked. Quitting smoking is the basis of prevention, an integral part of the treatment and rehabilitation of stroke patients. If it is impossible to completely give up smoking combustible cigarettes, it is advisable to switch to alternative smokeless products. This article presents the results of current studies on the comparative assessment of the risk of stroke in young people when using combustible cigarettes and smokeless analogues.

The problem of smoking, as well as incidence of tuberculosis, has existed for a long time. The latest WHO data indicate that 1.3 million people die from tuberculosis, and another 7 millions die from smoking every year. Tobacco smoke contains many harmful chemicals, including carbon monoxide, nicotine, nitrogen oxides, and cadmium. A number of studies indicate a high prevalence of smoking among patients with tuberculosis. In most cases, infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis does not lead to active disease, due to the development of a balanced, homeostatic immune response. The key protective components are inflammatory responses aimed at inhibition of the pathogen growth, its sequestration and final elimination. At the same time, excessive or inadequate immune response may lead to granuloma destruction, tissue damage and, as a result, prolonged duration of treatment due to decreased respiratory function of the lungs. Along with pro-inflammatory mediators, anti-inflammatory mediators are synthesized in the host organism, which can positively or negatively affect the course of disease, depending on the place and time of their production. The balance between pro-and anti-inflammatory mediators in terms of time and expression level plays a crucial role in determining the outcome of infection. In our review, we consider the impact of tobacco smoke on various components of the human immune system, as well as upon the course and outcome of tuberculosis and other lung diseases. In addition, we would like to draw the reader’s attention to the need of adjusting pathogenetic therapy of bronchopulmonary diseases, taking into account the patient’s smoking habits. Tobacco smoking is one of the main causes of the severe course of many infectious and non-infectious diseases of the bronchopulmonary system. The decay products of cigarette smoke disrupt the functioning of the ciliated epithelium of respiratory tract, the production of the mucous component in the bronchi, and reduce the effectiveness of the surfactant system. These negative events interfere with protective mechanisms of the human respiratory system. It is worth of note that tobacco smoke also exerts a systemic effect on the immune system. Data are accumulating on the association between the terms of exposure to tobacco smoke, and a range of adverse tunerculosis manifestations, such as extent of infection, severity of course, reactivation, treatment outcome, and mortality. At the same time, epidemiological studies are able to reveal the associations, but they do not allow us to determine exact causal relationships.

Thin-cut smoking tobacco is gaining more and more popularity among consumers of tobacco products. However, this type of product remains poorly understood, including the chemical composition of its smoke. The analysis of the data on the chemical composition of the smoke of smoking tobacco products of various designs is an urgent task from the point of view of assessing the toxic load. It will help further to develop recommendations and suggestions for consumers in the manufacture of these products. The main purpose of this work is to study the effect of the product design (diameter, weight and air permeability of paper) on the chemical composition of smoke and tasting assessment. This article discusses the technological properties of smoking tobacco brands: «Pepe», «Stanley», «Corsar», «Redmont». The chemical composition of tobacco (nicotine, proteins, carbohydrates and pH) was analyzed. The analysis of the composition and breathability of paper for self-rolled cigarettes of the brands «OCB Premium» and «OCB Organic Hemp» used for the manufacture of tobacco products from thin-cut tobacco, of different diameters. The influence of the design features of the products (diameter and weight) was studied on the chemical composition of smoke (nicotine, resin, carbon monoxide). Experimentally, the dependence of the chemical composition of smoke on the air permeability of paper and the design features of thin-cut tobacco products has been established: when using paper with low air permeability and with an increase in the diameter and weight of products, the nicotine content increases by 37,55% and resin by 39,54%. The dependence between the nicotine content in tobacco and nicotine in the smoke of tobacco products from thin-cut tobacco was revealed.

Despite the evidence and logical fact that smoking and asthma are incompatible, many patients are smoke. For many randomized trials, patient smoking is the exclusion criterion, and therefore the effectiveness of a particular anti-asthma therapy in smokers is poorly understood. In addition, it is a known fact that smoking develops resistance to the main anti-asthma therapy, inhalation glucocorticosteroids. The article discusses the mechanism of exposure to tobacco smoke on lung tissue, the development of pathological processes under the influence of components of tobacco smoke and possible solutions to the problem. The mechanism of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory effects of various components of tobacco smoke. Particular attention is paid to the role of cysteinyl leukotrienes in the formation of inflammation in the lower respiratory tract in smoking patients with asthma and the possibility of treating these patients with leukotriene receptor antagonists. A review of studies conducted in patients with bronchial asthma and exposure to tobacco smoke in whom montelukast was used as therapy is presented. Provides information on the safety and side effects of the drug.

Aim. To analyze the functionality and characteristics of quit smoking applications available to Russian-speaking users using validated scales for its evaluation.Material and methods. Applications were searched in the App Store and Google Play, and a specialized MARS scale was used to evaluate applications. A total of 598 applications were found, of which 54 applications met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study.Results. It was found that 54% of applications use short- and medium-term goals as methods and techniques to increase the likelihood of quitting tobacco, while 31% of applications use various educational materials in order to form a negative attitude towards smoking. In addition, 22% of applications use cognitive and behavioral techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy. A negative moderate correlation was established between the application user rating and MARS score (r=-0,32).Conclusion. The Russian-language anti-smoking mobile applications included in this study demonstrated satisfactory quality on average. A significant number of applications use proven effective cognitive behavioral therapy techniques. At the same time, mobile applications in healthcare has shortcomings, especially in terms of compliance with guidelines, and needs to be further improved.

Modern trends in the reduction of cigarette consumption have led to the spread of smokeless tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine-containing products [1]; their variety creates certain problems with the identification of products in this segment. Sucking tobacco (snus) has been banned in the Russian Federation for wholesale and retail trade since 2015, but it is a product similar to chew- ing tobacco in packaging, ingredient composition and physiological effects. Therefore, establishing the identification characteristics of chewing tobacco is an urgent task. The attitude towards chewing tobacco is controversial. The absence of the smoldering / burning process characteristic of cigarettes indicates a decrease in the harmful effect on the human body. At the same time, the physiological ef- fect on the consumer is based on the effect of nicotine extracted from tobacco through the oral mucosa. Consumer indicators of samples of smokeless tobacco / non-tobacco nicotine-containing products have been investigated: moisture content, fractional composition and nicotine content. The moisture content of samples of non-smoking products ranges from 19,0 % to 36,5 %. The nicotine content in the investigated tobacco / non-tobacco products is 0,3–2,4 % / 1,0–8,8 % respectively. To establish the identification signs of smokeless tobacco products the following methods have been used: product fractionation, optical microscopy, spectrophotometry, and liquid chromatography / tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS / MS). The main feature of the difference between smokeless tobacco products and non-tobacco nicotine-containing products has been determined – the presence of tobacco in the ingredient composition, confirmed by the structure of the product and the content of specific tobacco nitrosamines. As a result of the research, experimental data were obtained on the quantitative determination of the content of tobacco specific nitrosamines by the LCMS / MS method in smokeless tobacco products. The main identification feature of chewing tobacco has been established: the presence of raw tobacco in the ingredient composition with a coarse fraction content is at least 15 %.

Shisha tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine-containing shisha mixtures are an alternative way of consuming nicotine with a potential reduction in toxicological risk apart from smoking cigarettes. The Federal Law of July 31, 2020 N 303-FZ «On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation on the Protection of Citizens’ Health from the Consequences of Consuming Nicotine-Containing Products» [1] equated the consumption of nicotine-containing products with the traditional use of tobacco. The absence of state regulation predetermines the relevance of conducting large-scale studies of both shisha tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine-containing shisha mixtures. The specificity of the product consumption in this segment is the production of a highly dispersed aerosol that occurs without the combustion / smoldering process. The variety of the ingredient composition of nicotine-containing shisha mixtures determines the consumer properties and the toxic load of the aerosol produced. Assessment of the toxic effects of an aerosol should take into account the concentration of the ingredients in the mixture, the nicotine content and their transfer to the aerosol. The methods for determining the composition of nicotine-containing products have been updated in the laboratory of technology for the production of tobacco products of the FSBSI RSRITTP [2] over the past years. The article presents the results of studies to determine the content of glycerin and propyl- ene glycol, which determine the consumer properties of the product and nicotine as the main factor that determines the potential level of toxic risk of the product in shisha tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine-containing shisha mixture. The result of the research: the dependence of the tasting assessment on the content of VG glycerin in the ingredient composition of the mixture has been revealed. Insufficient glycerin content is the reason for the weak ability to form a saturated dense aerosol. The content of nicotine in the studied samples of shisha mixture has been determined and transition of nicotine into aerosol has been established.

The aim of the research is to study the features of aerosol mixture on various types of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) on a laboratory linear smoking machine to develop requirements both for the devices themselves and for the nicotine content in aerosol of liquids for ENDS. The analysis of data on aerosol collection on various types of nicotine-containing products (NCP) is relevant and in the future will allow to develop recommendations and proposals for establishing safety requirements for such devices and the composition of the aerosol produced. Since manufacturers position ENDS (e-cigarettes) as low-risk for health devices, the study of ENDS is an urgent task. The principle of operation of the devices is not associated with the combustion of tobacco as when smoking cigarettes. The article presents the results of the analysis of the nicotine content in the solid-liquid phase of the aerosol of ENDS devices. The issues of assessing the content of nicotine in the aerosol of the solid-liquid phase of innovative nicotine-containing products of such brands as «LUXLITE», «Von Erl My» and «eGo AIO» have been considered. Currently, a unified approach to the regulation of NCP and control of the content of toxic substances in the aerosol has not been developed, which leads to the use of various modes of aerosol collection on laboratory smoking machines. The article presents the aerosol collection parameters, since there are no regulatory measures to control the safety of electronic nicotine delivery systems. To determine the nicotine content in ENDS aerosol, it is recommended to use the ISO 20768 method, since when using ISO 20768exp, the stable operation of ENDS devices decreases. It has been found that different devices produce different amounts of nicotine according to the ISO 20768: 2018 aerosol collection regime. The nicotine content in the solid-liquid phase of the ENDS aerosol is influenced by the duration of the puff, and the nicotine content in the aerosol of the ENDS solid-liquid phase depends on the individual characteristics of the device operation.

[1] The most popular way of delivering nicotine to the body, which is cigarette smoking, has many negative effects, including considerable carcinogenic potential. Cigarette smoke contains approx. 6,500 chemical compounds, of which around 150 are considered toxic. [2] With the advancement of technology, alternative ways of delivering nicotine to the body have been found. These include e-cigarettes and tobacco heaters. In the following study, we will compare the method and mechanism of operation of these devices and their possible effects on human health compared to smoking.

Non-smoking products for oral consumption are a growing segment of the nicotinecontaining products market and, therefore, the study of the component composition and toxicological load during its consumption is an urgent task. The toxic components of nicotine-containing products are the subject of research in scientific laboratories and are carried out by various methods. Studies have been monitored for potential toxicity determinations of tobacco and non-tobacco smokeless products. The article presents the results of monitoring methods for determining toxic components that determine the risk of nonsmoking products, carried out at the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution ARSRCTTP. As a result of the research, methods for the quantitative determination of nicotine content have been determined and the method for the determination of tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) using high-performance liquid chromatography in the product under study has been validated.

Qualitative characteristics of tobacco aerosol for shisha are determined by the functional purpose and depend on the component composition of the tobacco mixture and the coal used.The purpose of the research is to develop a methodology for the comprehensive assessment of tobacco for shisha based on modern methods of product quality control and includes the following steps:- monitoring of the studies to determine the component composition of the hookah mixture and the aerosol produced;- analysis of hookah mixture testing modes and development of an aerosol generation protocol;- development of a method for collecting aerosol on a laboratory smoking machine; - quantitative analysis of toxic analytes by HPLC MS / MS method.Methods have been developed for the machine generation and collection of tobacco aerosol for hookah, taking into account low concentrations of the analyzed toxic substances.The expediency of using the HPLC MS / MS method to determine the quantity of the following substances in tobacco aerosol for shisha has been substantiated:- carbonyl compounds (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein) by detection on an electrospray source in the negative polarity mode- tobacco specific nitrosoamines (NNN and NNK) by detection on an electrospray source in the positive polarity mode.During the research laboratory and analytical equipment was used: a five-channel linear CERULEAN SM 405 smoking machine; Thermo Scientific Dionex UltiMate 3000 liquid chromatograph and TSQ Quantiva mass spectrometer.Obtaining experimental data on the quantitative determination of the component composition of the aerosol produced by tobacco for shisha using hookah systems is relevant for assessing toxic characteristics of the product.

The problem of improving the quality and reducing the toxicity of tobacco products is relevant worldwide and is related directly to health.The World Health Organization has identified nine priority toxic substances to assess and monitor the content of harmful toxic substances in cigarette tobacco smoke and ESTH (electrical tobacco heating systems) aerosol (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, nitrosonornicotine (NNN), 4-(N-methyl-N)nitrosamino-)-1-(3-pyridyl-)-1-butanone (NNK), benzene, 1,3-butadiene, carbon monoxide, 3,4-benzpyrene).The purpose of the research is to measure the content of nicotine and 3,4-benzpyrene in the solid-liquid phase of the aerosol of the electric tobacco heating system (ESTH), the smoke of a standard 3R4F cigarette and the smoke of five brands of cigarettes when tested on a smoking machine in ISO3308 and ISO Intense20778 modes. The comparative characteristics of the smoking modes ISO and ISO Intense are given.The article presents a comparative analysis of the content of nicotine and 3,4-benzpyrene in the solid-liquid phase of ESTH aerosol sticks and cigarette smoke, including the control cigarette 3R4F. The problems of the chemical composition of tobacco smoke aerosol and the processes of formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cigarette smoke are considered. Chemical and toxicological characteristics of 3,4-benzpyrene are given.

In 2016–2017 at the experimental selection site of ARSRITTP the influence of modern agrochemicals of Potassium Humate, Bio Fish, Plantafol, Mikrovit, Rexolin ABC, Floroni of the traditional mineral fertilizer ammonium nitrate on the quality of tobacco raw materials of the Virginia variety type from the world collection of the Institute was studied. The dominant indicators of the smoking benefits of tobacco are proteins, nicotine, carbohydrates and chlorine. It has been determined that three-fold foliar treatment of tobacco seedlings in the main phases of development «cross», «ligules» and «fit for planting» with complex agrochemicals improves the chemical composition of tobacco raw materials, and does not change the quantitative indicators of nicotine. The content of water-soluble carbohydrates in raw materials increased by 4–60% and 7–57%, the amount of proteins decreased by 3–11% and 8–16%, respectively, for the years under study. The preplanting application of ammonium nitrate to the soil reduces the quality of raw tobacco. Fertilizer in doses of N60 and N90 helped to reduce the amount of nicotine in tobacco over two years of research by 4–8%, and in doses of N120 and N150 to increase it by 1,5–15,0%. A decrease in the content of carbohydrates in the raw material was established with a decrease in the doses of ammonium nitrate by 39–235% relative to the control. The protein content was at the level of the variant without treatment. The amount of chlorine in the raw material is determined within the permissible limits for good flammability of tobacco (less than 0,4%).

The need for constant monitoring of the content of substances in innovative nicotinecontaining products – heated tobacco – is due to possible risks to the health of consumers. The article describes the method for determining nicotine, glycerol and propylene glycol in stick fillers for electric tobacco heating systems (ESNT) using the gas chromatographic method, which includes the procedure for preparing the initial standard and extracting solutions, preparing calibration solutions, preparing a sample for analysis, chromatographic conditions. The results of the study to determine the content of nicotine, glycerol, propylene glycol in control samples of tobacco stick fillers for ESNT and a statistical analysis of the results have been presented. Experimental data on the content of nicotine, glycerol, propylene glycol in tobacco fillers in 15 commercial stick samples for electric systems of heated tobacco of Russian and foreign manufacturers have been presented. It has been experimentally confirmed that the component composition of tobacco stick fillers for ESNT depends on the formulation of the blendings and the characteristics of the manufacturing process. The developed procedure for the determination of nicotine, glycerol, and propylene glycol in the tobacco stick fillers for ESNT using the gas chromatographic method allows us to obtain reliable analysis results, to control the content of these substances in products, thereby identifying sources of possible danger to consumers in a timely manner.

Background. Genetic modification of plants is one of the promising strategies to increase their resistance to insect pests. The development of metabolic or RNA interference systems for plant protection requires appropriate models of host-insect interactions. Nicotiana tabacum L. is a classical model plant used in molecular and metabolic engineering. We consider tobacco as a model for developing protective strategies against Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, CPB). Normally, tobacco is toxic for CPB due to high content of nicotine and related alkaloids in leaves. Modification of the tobacco genome could provide tobacco genotypes with altered metabolism suitable for CPB feeding. It is known that different mutations in Berberine Bridge-Like (BBL) genes cause different alterations in tobacco leaf alkaloid levels. In the current study, the Cas9/gRNA system targeting members of the BBL gene family of tobacco was used to create a line which can serve as a diet for CPB. Results. In order to obtain tobacco with modified alkaloid content, two gRNAs matching target sequences in six BBL genes were selected. Each gRNA was cloned into a gRNA/Cas9 generic vector. The created constructs were mixed and used for biolistic transformation of tobacco leaf explants together with the pBI121 plasmid harboring the kanamycin resistance gene nptII and the reporter E.coli betaglucuronidase (GUS) gene. Regenerants were selected on 100 mg/l of kanamycin and checked for transgene presence by histochemical GUS-assay. Unexpectedly, the regenerated plants displayed a variety of adverse phenotypic effects including different degree of growth and rooting inhibition, early flowering, increased number of internodes, changes in leaf shape, fusion of flowers, longostyly, and partial sterility. Only one from seven obtained calli produced a population of regenerated plants without severe phenotypic abnormalities. The NtaBBL5-14 line of clonally propagated plants was selected from this population and used for a CPB feeding experiment. It was shown that CPB larvae consume the leaves of NtaBBL5-14 line ten times more efficiently than the leaves of control plants (97±0.5% vs. 9±3% in 24 h respectively). Conclusion. The NtaBBL5-14 tobacco line is suitable for CPB feeding and can be further used as a model for studies in plant-pest interaction. The modification of other genes regulating nicotine metabolism can be a promising strategy to obtain tobacco plants edible for CPB with less pleiotropic effects.

In the last decade electronic cigarettes also known as e-cigarettes have gained popularity. These are devices designed to imitate regular cigarettes. They provide nicotine via inhalation without using tabacco. The introduction of alternative nicotine delivery devices to the consumer market has inspired a vivid debate on the harmfulness of these products. It is discussed whether they are regulated, safe and as harmless as it is claimed. The purpose of this article was to describe the chemical composition of the e-cigarettes and its influence on human’s health. The devices contain many various groups of potentially toxic and carcinogenic compounts: carbonyls, volatile organic compounts and nitrosamines. The researchs has shown that e-cigarettes contain significantly lower concentration of those substances than the traditional cigarettes. On the other hand, it should be remembered that scientists still do not know potential long term pathologies caused by the liquids.

Drug-induced atrial fibrillation / flutter (DIAF) is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of pharmacotherapy. Purpose of the work: systematization and analysis of scientific literature data on drugs, the use of which can cause the development of DIAF, as well as on epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factors, clinical picture, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, treatment and prevention of DIAF. Analysis of the literature has shown that many groups of drugs can cause the development of DIAF, with a greater frequency while taking anticancer drugs, drugs for the treatment of the cardiovascular, bronchopulmonary and central nervous systems. The mechanisms and main risk factors for the development of DIAF have not been finally established and are known only for certain drugs, therefore, this section requires further study. The main symptoms of DIAF are due to the severity of tachycardia and their influence on the parameters of central hemodynamics. For diagnosis, it is necessary to conduct an electrocardiogram (ECG) and Holter monitoring of an ECG and echocardiography. Differential diagnosis should be made with AF, which may be caused by other causes, as well as other rhythm and conduction disturbances. Successful treatment of DIAF is based on the principle of rapid recognition and immediate discontinuation of drugs (if possible), the use of which potentially caused the development of adverse drug reactions (ADR). The choice of management strategy: heart rate control or rhythm control, as well as the method of achievement (medication or non-medication), depends on the specific clinical situation. For the prevention of DIAF, it is necessary to instruct patients about possible symptoms and recommend self-monitoring of the pulse. It is important for practitioners to be wary of the risk of DIAF due to the variety of drugs that can potentially cause this ADR.

Introduction: There is common statement, that schizophrenia patients are more likely to smoke comparing to the total world population. The aim of the study: The aim of this article is to find out why do schizophrenic patients smoke, how does it affect them and what can be the cause of susceptibility to smoking. Material and method: The research of the scientific articles was made on a database of PubMed and Google Scholar. Description of the state of knowledge: Many different associations were found during the research such as these describing that patients with schizophrenia have up to two to five times higher risk of developing type II diabetes. Also patients with diagnosed schizophrenia are characterized by low neuronal activity of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. In post mortem studies in schizophrenic patients a decrease in the number of M1 and M2 receptors in the brain was found, mainly in the dorsal lateral part of the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, striatum and cingulate cortex, and decreased number of nicotinic receptors in the hippocampus, thalamus, cingulate cortex and prefrontal cortex The key process of undergoing of nicotine is the induction of the cytochrome P450 1A2 enzyme (CYP 1A2), thus increasing the metabolism of antipsychotic therapeutics, e.g. olanzapine, clozapine what explain why usage of nicotine is told to be self-treatment in schizophrenic people. Summary: This article gathers scientific research on the relationship between schizophrenia and susceptibility among patients to smoking addiction and its impact on both mental and physical health. However, not all mechanisms are known yet.

Tobacco raw materials of various botanical, commercial varieties grown in different climatic conditions have significant differences in chemical composition. In the manufacture of smoking products tobacco bags are used that contain various crops of tobacco with different chemical composition. The constancy of tasting properties of cigarettes is provided by the selection of components in tobacco bags. Sauce-dipping of raw tobacco is an integral part of the modern technological process of producing smoking articles. The component composition of sauces depends on the chemical composition of raw tobacco, but the main components are sugars, moisturizers and various flavor additives (cocoa, licorice, etc.) [3, P. 64]. The task of the long-term studies conducted at the FSBSI ARSRITTP is to study the dynamics and direction of the processes occurring during the storage of cigarettes containing sauces, flavors, expanded and reconstituted tobacco, extended leaf vein. The aim of the research is to determine the effect of terms and storage conditions on tobacco smoke toxicity indicators and consumer properties, which will make it possible to develop scientifically based recommendations for determining the optimal shelf life of cigarettes on the basis of the data obtained. The research has been conducted since 2017 and 32 indicators of various types of cigarettes have been monitored since then [5, P. 208-212]. The article discusses the changes in the content of carbohydrates in tobacco during storage of cigarettes for a long time.

Non-smoking tobacco products are considered to be an alternative to cigarette use. Non-smoking products differ in appearance, way of consumption, ingredient composition, toxicity level, manufacturing technology, physiological effect. Recently, there has been a steady increase in the consumption of both chewing tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine-containing products in Russia. A large variety of non-smoking products creates certain problems with product identification. To determine technological and consumer characteristics (humidity, fractional composition, nicotine content) of non-smoking tobacco, methods commonly used in the tobacco industry were used. The purpose of the research is to obtain experimental data for an objective assessment of toxic load and quality characteristics of non-smoking products of the studied brands. The objects of the research are samples of non-smoking products of the following trademarks: LYFT, Captain Black, Corvus, White FOX, Skruf, Odens, CUT, Ckif, ZYN, EPOK, THUNDER. The article presents the results of studies of consumer characteristics (tasting evaluation, humidity, extraction rate, fractional composition, nicotine content) of non-smoking products. As a result of the research, identification signs of non-smoking nicotine-containing products have been established and directions for further work to assess the toxicity level of a segmental product have been determined.

Shisha tobacco is a type of smoking tobacco product intended for smoking using a hookah and representing a mixture of cut or torn raw materials for the production of tobacco products with or without non-tobacco raw materials and other ingredients. The specificity of the consumption of this type of tobacco product is production of highly dispersed aerosol as a distillation product, the physiological strength of which is determined by the nicotine content in the hookah mixture. Systemic research of the "Tobacco for hookah" product, of its component composition and chemical composition of the aerosol produced has not been carried out. There are no standards for the content of toxic aerosol components for this product category. The selection of the component composition of the hookah mixture, taking into account the cost of the final product and its toxic load, is a modern technological method for modeling the ingredient composition, which is based on tobacco raw materials". Methods commonly used in tobacco industry and the following equipment was used to conduct the research: CERULEAN SM 405 linear smoking machine; Thermo Scientific Dionex UltiMate 3000 liquid chromatograph and TSQ Quantiva mass spectrometer using high performance LC-MS / MS liquid chromatography / mass spectrometry; Crystal 2000M Chromatograph; CO analyzer, Magix Shisha Since hookah. The article presents the results of studies to determine the content of nicotine and carbon monoxide in an aerosol produced by industrial and experimental tobacco samples for hookah, depending on the use of various tobacco raw materials and tobacco fines. As a result of the research, methods have been developed for collecting aerosol and determining the content of conditionally toxic compounds (acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, acrolein) in an aerosol produced by hookah mixtures, for an objective assessment of a tobacco product safety level.

Metabolic engineering of plant secondary metabolism provides a way to obtain plants with elevated level of valuable molecular compounds. Alternatively, metabolic engineering can be used for reduction of toxic substances accumulation in plant tissues. This approach allows one to expand the application of toxic plants in agriculture and biotechnology. The crops of Solanaceae family provide an example of toxic plants of high economic value. Solanaceae family includes edible crops such as potato, tomato and eggplants, medicinal plants like Withania somnifera L. and major non-food crop Nicotiana tabacum L. The secondary metabolism of Solanaceae family is widely diverse and includes the biosynthesis and accumulation of number of toxic compounds, such as nicotine and other alkaloids in tobacco, steroidal glycoalcaloids in potato and withanolides in winter cherry W. somnifera. The secondary metabolic pathways of Solanaceae family have evolved from primary metabolism via duplication of the enzyme coding genes and diversification of genes functions. Local, segment and the whole genome duplications and subsequent formation of metabolic genes clusters are the main processes in secondary metabolic pathways formation. Recent whole genome sequence data from number of Sonanaceae species allows one to reconstruct the putative mechanism of primary and secondary metabolism genetic control and evolution. Genomic data together with novel guided endonuclease based genome modification tools provide an opportunity for introduction of precise changes into secondary metabolism. Suppression of nicotine accumulation in tobacco is promising approach for developing of novel plant systems for molecular farming. Toxicity of wild potato relatives impedes their usage in potato breeding. Tobacco and wild potato toxicity reduction can be achieved by different genome modification approaches: knock-out of the key enzyme genes of alkaloids synthesis, the large deletion of the whole cluster of the secondary metabolic genes or the precise editing of key transcription factors in secondary metabolism regulation pathways.

The article presents some pathogenetic mechanisms of adverse effects of nicotine as a part of tobacco smoke such as carcinogenesis, atherogenesis, thrombogenesis, the influence on functional activity of internals and also a bone tissue and a mucous membrane of a mouth. For food correction of adverse effects the use of a number of ingredients for development of new technologies of functional products is scientifically grounded and recommended. The expected favorable biological effects at systematic consumption of these products are presented.

As a result of the studies experimental data were obtained, which make it possible to clarify the “Method for the determination of nicotine in liquids for electronic nicotine delivery systems” in the part of the method for preparing solutions for the calibration curve. Metrological characteristics (repeatability and reproducibility) of the method are determined based on the results of interlaboratory comparative tests (ICT).

The aim of the study is the analysis of specialized scientific literature and the review of data about the modern views on the electronic devices of nicotine delivery – electronic cigarettes from the view of evidence-based medicine. In recent years, electronic cigarettes (EC) have become widespread. More than 10 years have passed since the first batch release of electronic cigarettes, and during that time, many studies have been conducted on various aspects of their use. However, the main concern of experts is the lack of a clear unanimous opinion about their health security and the EC's effectiveness as a method of tobacco control. The review presents modern data regarding existing EC modifications, the impact of their use on the human body at the cellular and systemic levels. Attention is paid to the fact that the actual physical nicotine dependence in the vast majority of cases is combined with psychological dependence, which reduces the effectiveness of other nicotine delivery devices. Data from randomized clinical trials show that further development of methods for studying the effects of the EC on the organism is very actual. In general, such studies were made to highlight key issues regarding the safety and effectiveness of e-cigarette use, including the fight against tobacco smoking. Special cautions were made to the research results that indicate the growing of popularity of e-cigarettes among teenagers, particularly in the US, Poland, Latvia, Finland and Korea. Conclusions. The EC has proven to be effective in removing of tobacco-related complaints, but so far, the EC cannot be available as safe and effective method to completely abandon smoking. Existing production regulations do not standardize either the EC itself or the liquid for them, because of which the composition (including the content of harmful to health substances) is not actually regulated. In addition, there are no data about the long-term effects of EC usage, which is a priority area for further research.

To comply with Section V of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union on Tobacco Products (TR / CU 035/2014) “Requirements for Tobacco Products”, the regularities of the effect of the terms and conditions of storage of different types of cigarettes on the content of toxic components in tobacco smoke, on tasting and smoking properties are studied.

Sale of liquids for electronic cigarettes requires constant monitoring for this product at the market. The article presents the results of the study on the detection of nicotine in commercial samples of liquids for electronic cigarettes, obtained using the procedure for detecting nicotine in liquids for electronic nicotine delivery systems.
