Purpose: In this paper, we provide a concise overview of the researches that address the search and selection of adult literature, with special emphasis on the search for yet unknown material, especially in the online environment. Methodotogy/approach: We performed a comparative critical review of the available literature. We reviewed researches by domestic and foreign authors, especially in the field of library and information science. Results: In the studies, the search for literature is highlighted as a strongly context-related process where the combination of the readers' searching skills, their knowledge, personal and affective factors, and well-functioning interaction with the system results in a more or less successful literary book selection. The basic functions of literature are to provoke a certain state of mind in the reader or to communicate the author's view, judgment. A good fiction search system should also include these aspects tailored to individual types of readers. In order to create more appropriate systems for literature readers, we need additional, both qualitative and extensive evaluation user studies. Research limitations: Only researches addressing the search for adult literature were included in the analysis of information retrieval behavior. We have not considered studies on the search for non-fiction, nor studies on the search for fiction for children. The review was limited to sources published in English, Italian and Slovenian language. Originality/practical implications: By reviewing the research areas and research methods used, we determined the coverage of researches that address the issue of finding and selecting literature for adults. In this context we identified yet unexplored gaps and developed substantive and methodological guidelines for further work. At the same time, we offered a theoretical basis for the further development of the recommended literature portal Dobreknjige.si and other consulting services for literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The FRBR model (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) presents one possible solution to improve the functionality and usability of the library catalogue. The model proposes attributes and relationships that are necessary to fulfil user tasks. We tested the suggested attributes and relationships by studying fiction readers. Methodology/approach: In this paper, we present four user studies. Personal interviews were conducted between December 2011 and December 2014 with an accidental sample of 361 people. Two studies involved real tasks in which we used the five various types of bibliographic records. Results: The analysis showed that enriched bibliographic records, notably with a cover image and a sample page (layout, size of letter, and font) increase customer satisfaction in the selection and identification of material. Studies provided evidence of low usage of library catalogue and the dominance of independent browsing in a library. We observed the difference between selecting materials in the library catalogue and on the shelf. Research limitation: The study has limitations in the size and strategy of sampling, the type of material, spatial and temporal dimensions and for different purposes. Originality/practical implications: We confirmed the appropriateness of attributes and relationships for the user tasks and proposed a set of the most important attributes and relationships of an improved bibliographic record. The results can be implemented in bibliographic information systems, especially in the description of fiction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since Kinsui's (2000, 2003) initial proposal, research on role language has progressed with the topics growing more diverse. In this paper we propose that a peculiar speech style assigned to a certain character in fiction should be treated as character language rather than role language. Role language, which is based on social and cultural stereotypes, is a subset of character language. Given that role language is also a linguistic stereotype, its knowledge should be widely shared by members of the speech community, and its patterns within limits. Character language, on the other hand, allows for various types, being far from being a closed class. We examine and give examples of four types of character language: speech styles that could become actual role language, once shared widely in the speech community; speech styles that are effectively adopted by characters outside of their expected speaker's social and cultural groups; speech styles employed to represent something other than their stereotypes; and uniquely created speech styles.
