V disertaciji preučujemo odnos mladih srednješolcev (od 14. do 18. leta) z otoka Krka do tradicijske glasbe otoka Krka v kontekstu praznovanja svetnikov zavetnikov krajev v cerkvenih enotah, imenovanih kapitlji. To so mesta Omišalj, Dobrinj, Vrbnik in Baška. Raziskava ima dva sklopa, teoretičnega in empiričnega. Teoretični del diseratcije ima tri dele: sociolingvistični, geografsko-kulturni in muzikološki del. V raziskavi smo uporabili metode s področij etnologije, kulturne antropologije in folkloristike, muzikologije in sociologije, pedagogike, teologije ter zgodovine in geopolitike, ki so podatkom dodale kvalitativno globino izraza in izražanja lokalne identitete skozi tradicijsko glasbo in odnos do mladih. Metodološki pristop raziskovanja življenja in pomena tradicijske glasbe se nam razkrije prek pričevanj sogovornikov. This dissertation deals with the attitude of high school youth (ages 14 to 18) toward the traditional music from the island of Krk in the context of patron saint celebrations in former bodies of the church, called chapters. The towns are: Omišalj, Dobrinj, Vrbnik and Baška. The research consists of two parts, theoretical and empirical. The former is divided into three parts: sociolinguistic, geo-cultural and musical. The main, empirical part of this dissertation focuses on discovering how the young population of the island feels toward the traditional music. The empirical research was carried out via a questionnaire, handed out to students at Hrvatski kralj Zvonimir high school centre in the town of Krk. Based on four hypotheses, we try to establish the external factors that contribute to either positive or negative relationship of the youth toward the traditional music.

V drugem delu ugotavljamo, katere izmed teh generičnih in poklicno specifičnih kompetenc so dijaki prve generacije (2008/09-2011/12) v programu naravovarstveni tehnik razvijali in urili pri praktičnem pouku in praktičnem usposabljanju z delom (PUD). This doctoral dissertation discusses the prospects of a new vocational education programme, awarding the title "Nature Conservation Technician" (2008/09), in terms of societal needs for specific professional profiles in the field of nature conservation as well as in terms of employment opportunities. This research work includes three sets of empirical surveys. One set is designed to answer research questions, such as: Which professional profiles in the field of nature conservation do we need?, What kind of activities, tasks and processes should such professionals be able to perform? and Which generic and occupationally specific competencies are necessary for successful working the field of nature conservation? The other set answers the question, Which of such generic and professional competencies have students been developing and practising in the Nature Conservation programme? The qualitative research part finds that the profession recognizes the societal needs for vocational and professional profiles in the field of nature conservation. It further finds that such needs are apparent in the field of nature conservation supervision, which is currently underdeveloped in Slovenia, in the field of natural and cultural landscape and park infrastructure care and maintenance, and finally in the area of interpretation, provision of information and guidance in protected areas. However, experts also emphasize that despite the societal needs for professionals in the field of nature conservation there are few employment opportunities directly in this field. The model of occupationally specific competencies includes field monitoring and supervision, and restoration, care and maintenance of natural and cultural landscapes and park infrastructure. Quantitative research, which was carried out among the first generation of the Nature Conservation programme students (2008/09-2011/12), has shown insufficient training in and development of occupationally specific competencies which the experts have defined as important. The third part studies the usage of different teaching methods among practical instruction teachers. The encouraging finding, however, is that practical instruction teachers are using various teaching methods and forms of work, which contribute to more efficient development of generic and occupationally specific competencies.

Doctoral dissertation is concerned with integration of risk assessment results of extreme weather events into spatial planning of electric power infrastructure. A risk assessment approach useful in spatial planning is developed and presented in a case study of risks to power grid due to ice storms. The results of risk assessment are then used as a basis for analysis of proposed alternatives for siting high-voltage power line and as an input in analysis of suitability of space for siting windfarms. The second case study considers the damage of heavy rainstorms to hydroelectric power plants and defines areas suitable for siting hydroelectric power plants. Risk assessment is an important information that can affect decisions about land use and decisions about technical measures for enhancement of physical resilience of infrastructure. Risk assessment results – risk maps – can be used in siting new infrastructure to locations where damage caused by extreme weather events will be lower. For existing facilities located in areas of greater risks, additional technical measures for enhancement of resilience can be proposed.

Z vključevanjem napovedi mogočih podnebnih sprememb smo pomembno spremenili napovedi prihodnje prostorske razporeditve divjega prašiča vsi trije dinamični modeli v primerjavi s statičnim modelom napovedujejo večje območje razširjenosti in večje lokalne gostote divjega prašiča. iii) Paroma smo primerjali vplive istih okoljskih dejavnikov na: a) populacijsko gostoto jelenjadi, srnjadi in divjega prašiča in b) na vitalnost osebkov teh vrst. Classical habitat studies typically rely on a suite of unverified assumptions as follows: i) Treating habitat use as a direct indicator of its suitability assumes that all individuals can access the habitat equally. ii) Existing habitat models predict future spatial distribution of species based on static environmental factors, ignoring the dynamic nature of the environment. iii) Based on evolutionary theory, most habitat studies assume that animals use habitat in a manner to maximise their fitness. We hypothesised that the abovementioned assumptions are often incorrect, thus leading to false conclusions. By modelling habitat use of red deer, roe deer and wild boar in Slovenia we demonstrated the consequences of the misuse of these assumptions and provided guidance on how to avoid or mitigate them. The thesis is divided in three parts: i) We modeled red deer habitat using not only typical environmental factors as the explanatory variables, but also the cost distance (i.e. distance, reflecting habitat permeability) from the red deer reintroduction sites. The model predicted this variable as highly significant, showing that present red deer spatial distribution is not only reflected by the habitat suitability, but also by incomplete spatial spread of red deer. ii) We prepared a static predictive habitat model of wild boar, based on current values of temperature and precipitation, and three dynamic models taking into account different scenarios of temperature and precipitation changes by the year 2040. Incorporating climate change scenarios affected model predictions significantly: all three dynamic models predicted larger distribution range as well as increased local densities of wild boar, compared to the static model. iii) We compared the effects of chosen environmental factors on local population densities and individual fitness of red deer, roe deer and wild boar, respectively. In red deer, both supplemental feeding sites and spruce pole stands have significant positive influence on population density and negative influence on individual fitness. This indicates that red deer habitat use is irrational in terms of maximising fitness. According to our findings this is primarily related to habitat saturation, which in turn is tightly connected to anthropogenic land changes.

This dissertation proposes a set of computational methods for inference of gene networks from heterogeneous data sources. These methods address problems of function prediction using different computational phenotypes, methods for the analysis of gene regulatory regions, and methods for decomposition of gene expression signature profiles. The main contribution of this dissertation is a method that relies on a new machine learning approach called rule-based clustering. The method can combine regulatory DNA sequence and phenotype data to infer rules that describe clusters of genes with similar phenotype and regulatory structure. We propose a set of visualizations to aid in the presentation and interpretation of inferred rules. We successfully applied the proposed methods to answer some important biological questions about the regulation of gene expression. The method for the decomposition of a gene expression signature profile can be used to place a (new) DNA microarray experiment into a biological context, which proved useful when inferring pathways and functions of genes.
