Background: There is a need for epidemiological and incidence data on the occurrence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in Spain., Objectives: Our study was designed to retrospectively retrieve cases from our computer databases from 2010 through 2016 to provide updated data on the actual incidence of BCC in Valencia, eastern Spain., Material and Methods: This was an epidemiological study on basal cell carcinoma conducted in Valencia, eastern Spain. We analyzed a total of 2171 patients and 4047 tumors, and gathered data to estimate the actual incidence of BBC in our region., Results and Conclusions: Our study confirmed that the incidence of BCC is much higher than previously reported. We calculated a crude incidence of 410.38 BCCs/100 000 person-years, an adjusted rate for the European population of 256.98 BCCs/100 000 person-years, and an adjusted rate for the world population of 196.26 BCCs/100 000 person-years. Risk is up to 29.49% higher for men (464.07 cases/100 000 person-years vs 358.40 cases/100 000 person-years for women). Incidence also increases by an annual 3.91% (a significantly higher annual incidence of 8.28% in women vs a 0.92% annual incidence in men). Introduction: Studies reporting incidences of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) are heterogeneous, depend on the geographic area of the studied population and are often short-term. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of NMSC in patients treated with oral PUVA therapy in the Mediterranean area., Material and Methods: A retrospective, observational study was carried out with a sample of 234 patients treated with systemic PUVA between 1982 and 1996, carrying out a historical follow-up until May 2017. The incidencedensity rate of CCNM (crude and adjusted) was calculated by direct standardisation. The incidence of CCNM was compared with that reported in the general population in a similar geographical area., Results: 50 neoplasms were diagnosed in 22 patients. The prevalence of CCNM in patients treated with phototherapy was 10.3%. The mean follow-up time was 21 years. The crude-adjusted incidence density rate of CCNM was 554.4-183.9 cases/100,000 treated patients per year. The crude-adjusted incidence density rate of basal cell carcinoma was 352.3-111.2 cases/100.000 patients and of squamous cell carcinoma was 229-77.7 cases /100,000 patients., Conclusion: PUVA therapy is associated with an increased risk of CCNM inthe Mediterranean population., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier España, S.L.U. Introduction: Hand eczema is a frequent disease in adults. Diagnosing the cause of hand eczema is difficult due to different classifications. There is lack of evidence on hand eczema and its causes in children., Material and Method: A total of 389 children between 0 and 16 years were identified between 1996 and 2016, from whom 42 (10.8%) with exclusively hand eczema were selected. In all cases a standard battery of epicutaneous patch tests was performed, as well as additional batteries depending on the clinical suspicion. The clinical and epidemiological features of these children were recorded and compared against children with eczema in other locations., Results: The 42 children with hand eczema included 25 (60.5%) girls, and 17 (40.5%) boys, with a mean age of 10.6 +- 3.9 years, and did not differ from that of children with eczema in other locations. The definitive diagnosis after patch-testing was Atopic Dermatitis in 15 cases, Allergic Contact Dermatitis in 14 patients, Endogenous Vesiculous Eczema in 6 cases, Endogenous Hyperkeratotic Eczema in 5 cases, and Irritant Contact Dermatitis in 2 cases. The most frequent allergens detected were thiomersal (9 cases), nickel (5 cases), mercury (5 cases), and cobalt (4 cases)., Conclusion: Hand eczema is a common condition in children. The most common cause is atopic dermatitis, although cases of allergic contact dermatitis manifesting as hand eczema are not uncommon. Background: The risk of skin cancer in patients treated with narrowband (NB) UV-B phototherapy is not well understood. Although experimental studies have shown that there is a risk, clinical studies have not detected an increased incidence of cancer following treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in patients treated with NB UV-B phototherapy at a tertiary care hospital in the Mediterranean area., Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 474 patients who received whole-body NB UV-B phototherapy at our hospital between 2002 and 2016 and identified those diagnosed with NMSC during follow-up. We calculated the corresponding crude and standardized incidence rates and compared these with rates in the general population in a similar geographic area., Results: Of the 474 patients, 193 (40.7%) were men and 281 (59.3%) were women. The mean (SD) follow-up period was 5.8 (3) years. The prevalence of NMSC at the end of the study period was 1.9% and the standardized incidence was 108.3 cases per 100 000 patient-years. The SIR of 1.9 in the study group was not significantly different from that of the general population. The number of patients who needed to be treated with NB UV-B phototherapy for 1 case of NMSC to occur was 1900., Conclusion: NB UV-B phototherapy does not appear to be associated with an increased risk of NMSC., (Copyright © 2018 AEDV. Lentigo maligna is the most common form of in situ melanoma. It is most often found on the head and neck, and its clinical and dermoscopic features in this location have been extensively described in the literature. We present a series of 14 patients diagnosed with extrafacial lentigo maligna and lentigo maligna melanoma at Hospital General de Valencia and Hospital de Manacor in Spain, and describe the clinical, dermoscopic, and histologic features observed. Most of the melanomas were located on the upper limbs; the next most common locations were the trunk and the lower limbs. The dermoscopic patterns were consistent with facial lentigo maligna and superficial spreading melanoma. Extrafacial lentigo maligna is uncommon. It has similar clinical and histologic features to facial lentigo, but dermoscopy may show a mix of patterns typically seen in lentigo maligna and superficial spreading melanoma. This difference in dermoscopic features is essentially due to anatomical differences between skin on the face and on other parts of the body., (Copyright © 2016 AEDV. Introduction: Tufted angioma (TA) is a rare benign vascular tumor that mostly appears during infancy or early childhood, although there are cases reported in adults. Clinical presentation and evolution of TA can vary. Histologically, it takes on a classic appearance of vascular tufts ("cannon ball" like appearance)., Patients and Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted that included all patients diagnosed with TA at our center in the last 20 years., Results: A series of 9 cases of tufted angioma in childhood are presented, 77.7% of which were congenital. This represents a frequency higher than previously described. Spontaneous regression was observed in 55.5% of the cases, and was more frequent in the congenital TA group. Unlike other TA series reported in the literature, a higher proportion of patients with spontaneous regression was observed in this series, with a higher prevalence in females (6 out of 9 children) and predominantly located in the upper limbs. None of our patients had Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon., Conclusions: There are many ways of treating TA, but none are uniformly effective. Given the high rate of spontaneous regression in congenital or early TA, we suggest that, in the absence of other complications, monitoring would be a good option for management., (Copyright © 2014 Asociación Española de Pediatría.
