El uso de animales en experimentación científica está regulado por normativas diseñadas para garantizar la ética y el bienestar de los animales. A nivel mundial las regulaciones varían, pero muchos países como Argentina adoptan directrices establecidas por organizaciones internacionales como la Oficina de Protección de los Derechos de los Animales, EE.UU. (Animal Welfare Office) y el Instituto Nacional de Salud, EE.UU. (National Institute of Health). Los protocolos que se elaboran teniendo en cuenta las recomendaciones de estas entidades deben ser revisados por comités de ética para asegurarse que se cumplan con los estándares internacionales. En resumen, las pautas actuales buscan equilibrar el avance científico con la ética, asegurando que el uso de animales en investigación sea racional, humanitario y respetando el bienestar animal. Abstract The use of animals in scientific experiments is regulated by guidelines designed to ensure ethics and welfare of animals. Regulations vary around the world, but many countries, such as Argentina, follow guidelines established by international organizations such as the US Office of Animal Welfare and the US National Institutes of Health. Protocols developed using the recommendations of these entities must be reviewed by ethics committees to ensure that they follow international standards. In summary, the current guidelines seek to strike a balance between scientific progress and ethics, ensuring that the use of animals in research is rational, humane and respects animal welfare. ABSTRACT Improving natural ventilation during animal transportation is a promising approach for promoting animal well-being and reducing losses. The objective of this study was to evaluate in silico the efficiency of devices (airfoils and deflectors) used for cooling trailers during the transportation of pigs. Device performance was assessed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and 3D modeling of the enthalpy profile of a trailer, and adaptive mesh generation was employed to construct a computational mesh. Turbulence treatments were performed using RANS model and k-ω SST models. The results revealed that compared with the conditions observed in commercial transportation, the use of an airfoil increased the airflow and reduced the enthalpy within the assessed trailer (-5.4%). Likewise, the use of deflectors resulted in a reduction in enthalpy (-3.04%), although their use led to a translocation of the thermal core to the front region of the upper floor of the trailer. Nevertheless, the use deflectors has been proven to be more efficient when combined with an airfoil. In conclusion, the results obtained from our CFD simulations provide evidence to indicate that it is possible to optimize ventilation within transport containers using aerodynamic devices.

(Series Information) European Papers - A Journal on Law and Integration, 2023 8(1), 221-226 | Article | (Abstract) This explanation presents the Special Section “The horizontal clauses of arts 8-13 TFEU: normative implications, implementation and potential for mainstreaming”, which collects six Articles originally presented at a workshop devoted to the integration clauses of the TFEU held in October 2021. With a view to working towards a better understanding of arts 8-13 TFEU and their contribution to gender equality, non-discrimination, social protection, environmental protection, consumer protection and animal welfare, the six Articles reflect on the legal nature, value and effects of relevant provisions on EU law- and policy-making. Setting the scene, the explanation outlines the main research questions that guide the analysis in the six Articles and explains how each contribution feeds into the Special Section.

Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior and performance of steers in two different housing areas (10 vs. 100 m2/animal) and two feeding models (daily supply vs. self-feeding) during the fattening period. Materials and methods: Forty-eight Hereford steers with initial live weight (LW): 214,0 kg were housed under four treatments: 100DS (100 m2/animal and daily supply), 100SF (100 m2/animal and self-feeding), 10DS (10 m2/animal and daily supply), 10SF (10 m2/animal and self-feeding) until reaching a final LW of 370 – 390 kg. Behavior was recorded by observation. Dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) were recorded to estimate feed conversion ratio (FCR). Back fat thickness (BFT) and Longissimus muscle area (LMA) were measured. Steers were sent to a commercial abattoir to evaluate carcass yield. Results: The frequency of rest and walking was higher in steers in the largest housing area. Self-feeding contributed to the intake distribution during the day. No differences were detected in DMI, ADG and FCR. However, the confined animals (10DS and 10SF) produced more BFT and less LMA. In addition, they had less carcass yield at slaughter. Conclusions: Therefore, a larger housing area and the self-feeding model could contribute to express steers’ natural behavior and improve their performance.
