2. The external dimension of the Spanish transition

Political science - Abstract
The author intends to go beyond the unanimous opinion that the processes of political transition must be explained, almost exclusively, in terms of national forces and calculations. In the case of the Spanish transition he intends to demonstrate how thestrategies of the national actors (crown, government and parties) were moulded largely by the pressure of regulations and structures drawn up outside its frontiers. Firstly, by the United States’ discreet support (always putting forward first her strategic interests) of the political evolution whilst it did not put in danger the Spanish contribution to the western defensive system (while the USSR hardly played any role). The Spanish transition did not offer a threat to the alliance system from the beginning and with which the result was practically guaranteed. The European governments for their part, worried least about security and more about the political dimension pressurizing the regime and supporting the leaders of the democratic opposition more and more. The European institutions, withtheir veto, ended up legitimizing the Spanish process of democratization while the different Internationals came together and helped their coreligionists in Spain. Their political and diplomatic pressure were complemented, with the paradigm in the case of PSOE, with the contribution of means and resources by the political foundations, largely German, whose highly visible participation did not lessen the credibiity of those it protected.

Medicine ,Medicine (General) ,R5-920 - Abstract

logical laws ,proof ,truth-ground ,revision of logic ,Philosophy. Psychology. Religion ,Philosophy (General) ,B1-5802 - Abstract
The paper explores a Fregean inspired conception on what concerns the nature of logical laws. A basic idea is that logic must ‘take care of itself’, i.e., nothing topic-specific could play the role of ground for a logical law. In this Fregean mood, we’ll see as isolating logical laws requires to separate being true from taken to be true. Such a path will lead us through a discussion on the role of representation in its relation to the true and the false. Logic’s proper justification (proof) concerns returning to more basic truths, but justifying such truths is something beyond its scope. According to Frege, logical laws are grounded solely on being true, which brings us back to the question about these laws’ relation to topic-specific matters, as well as their revision.

We defend the guise of the good thesis in a tradition going back to Socrates and Plato, according to which persons act on the basis of what appears to them as good or the least bad or evil act available to them. This seems contrary to moral experience, but we defend the thesis against plausible counter-examples in life as well as fiction. We contend that the thesis makes wrong-doing and vice intelligible, but still wrong, dysfunctional and horrific.

Abstract This narrative is the result of the round-table “Mariana, Barcarena, Brumadinho: mining and environmental crimes”, at the III Latin-American Congress of Political Ecology, in March 2019. We present the crimes in mining activities and the experiences born from the resistance to extractive projects that threaten the planet’s integrity and human life. We seek to understand and investigate the reactions to these projects, assessing economic, social and geographic dimensions. This transdisciplinary perspective contributes to understand that socioenvironmental and sociotechnical crimes are not isolated, and that extractive projects of mining companies are a result of a logic of global capital expansion and of a territorial structure where the mining activity takes place. This logic of accumulation is not only horizontal, with the expansion of the extraction frontiers, but is also vertical, because it penetrates the deepest parts of the earth, water, air and all the nature and living beings.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hospitals integrate several risks posed by physical, chemical, psychosocial and ergonomic factors, which may be noxious for different healthcare professionals. This study aimed at evaluating the level of physical activity, the presence of musculoskeletal risk factors and the incidence of low back pain among nursing professionals of a hospital Materials and Sterilization Center. METHODS: Sample was made up of 56 individuals of both genders, working for the Associação Beneficente de Campo Grande/MS-Hospital Santa Casa. Participants were divided in two groups: G1 (insufficiently active, n=27) and G2 (sufficiently active, n=29). In addition to the level of physical activity, anthropometric data, incidence of pain and functional incapacity, flexibility and muscle resistance were evaluated. RESULTS: The incidence of low back pain was lower in G2 (13 cases; 44.8%) as compared to G1 (24 cases; 88.9%). Body mass index, pain intensity and functional incapacity index were lower for G2. Time of physical activity was lower in G1. Abdominal muscles resistance was higher in G2. CONCLUSION: In nursing professionals, the level of physical activity influences the presence of low back pain, pain intensity and functional incapacity index.

moral realism ,moral anti-realism ,objective moral facts ,theism ,william irwin ,michael ruse ,e.o. wilson ,Philosophy. Psychology. Religion - Abstract
William Irwin defends a form of moral anti-realism, according to which there are no objective moral facts. He contends that moral realism is objectionable because of its being more complex or not as simple as anti-realism; moral realism is in conflict with science; moral realism is also challenged by the fact that our moral judgements would differ if we were subject to a different biology or evolutionary past. Irwin also argues that insofar as moral realism is supportable evidentially by experience this would lead to the absurdity of thinking theism may be supported evidentially by religious experience. In response, it is argued that there are many truths (about logic and mathematics) and practices (such as science itself) that are not intelligible if there are no objective, normative truths and that objective moral truths are no more dispensable or odd than epistemic norms. It is further argued that Irwin's account of the evolution of morality is not able to escape presupposing objective moral facts (about harm and benefaction). Finally, the appeal to moral and religious experience is defended in making the case for moral realism and theism.

Philip Kitcher and other secular naturalists assert that we have a problem-free concept of the "mundane physical world" and use the idea of our familiar material world to critique those who recognize a transcendent reality as in theism. It is argued that the naturalist's concept of the world faces problems involving the primacy of the mental, normativity, sensations and consciousness, and contemporary science. A closing section suggests, contra secular naturalism, that our experience of the mundane world can be suffused with a sense of the transcendent, as we find in Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. This conclusion is supported by reference to other work.

A thought makes truth turn in some given way on how things are. What it thus does decomposes in partial doings of this. For example, making truth turn on whether Sid is sober may decompose into making truth turn on which ways Sid is, and on which objects are sober. If we assume that a thought decomposed in just one such way. Such, then, would be a thought’s essential structure. That idea might then apply as follows. To hold a thought true one must first grasp it. To grasp it one must each element of its essential structure. If, say, those elements are making truth turn on Sid and making it turn on who is sober, then one must grasp what it would be for something to be Sid (and for something to be sober). The working assumption here is false. But in any case this application is mistaken. Or so this essay argues.

This study aims to understand teachers’ strategies of planning students’ visits to science museums and how they intend to relate this visit to formal science teaching. The study was conducted with 21 teachers of Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, randomly identified among visitors to a science museum, who were accompanying their students. Interviews and written records of teachers about teachers strategies were analyzed using the textual discursive analysis revealed five levels of control (or choice) adopted by teachers for planning and tracking of students' visits to the museum. The results showed that most teachers surveyed use control elements, requesting notes for reports to be retrieved in school. The evaluation mechanisms planned by teachers after the visit showed an intention for preserving and contextualization of the museum experience in other contexts, like in school.

Education - Abstract
In 2013, Governor Jerry Brown and the California legislature radically restructured the state’s school funding system and accountability systems with a weighted student formula and a mandated local planning process in each district. The new law substitutes local politics and grassroots agency for state-driven mandates and compliance reviews. While the Local Control Funding Formula has had immediate impact, early evaluations suggest that districts like the new system and are earnest in their implementation efforts, but it will take years to assess the effect of the multi-indicator Local Control Accountability Plans. Simultaneously, the state is implementing the Common Core State Standards and the associated Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium tests, which make creating local accountability plans more complicated.

33. He Stoops to Conquer: Fielding and English Song

Given Fielding’s noteworthy achievement as a songwriter, two puzzling issues arise. First, why are his lyrics so superior to his poetry, and second, why did he become immersed in popular song when he had limited respect for the form? The second question is the more easily answered: the often impecunious Fielding embraced ballad opera after noting the monumental success of The Beggar’s Opera. Its appeal for him, though, was not simply financial as its attack on Italian opera and use of songs to make moral points also attracted him. Once underway, however, his career as a lyricist quickly revealed his talent for word-painting, as he skillfully used music to reinforce his words’ meaning; and he integrated his airs so smoothly into the action that many are written as dialogue, giving them dramatic force. He also proved highly adept at setting new words to old melodies, using the previous lyrics to provide an interpretive framework for his own. Ironically, too, his limited respect for the genre contributed to his success as he abandoned the stilted and elevated style of his poetry and adopted popular music’s easy informality. Indeed, if English song was ‘low’, it was ultimately by stooping that Fielding conquered

A comparison of the results obtained on using 2 image segmentation methods in arteriosclerotic lesions of the thoracic aorta is presented. One of these methods was supervised and the other wasn't. The segmentation was used with preprocessing and without preprocessing. The advantages of this type of procedure for the discrimination of different lesions, such as adipoid striae, fibrous plates, complicated plates, and calcified plates, are explained. It is shown that in every case the non-supervised algorithms were high than those supervised.
