Up until today, technological knowledge has been diluted in the general knowledge that schools provide, and it is fundamentally acquired informally in everyday activities. Education in Technology is a knowledge that allows solving problems and satisfying needs through designing and building artifacts and processes. Besides, it allows learning scientific basis underlying the functioning of objects that are part of the immediate environment of students. Primary education has the challenge to assume the responsibility it has in this area and incorporating a new discipline in its curriculum that takes care of these topics: Education in Technology.

Bronchogenic neoplasm ,Neoplasia ,Pulmonary tuberculosis ,Tuberculosis ,Neoplasm ,Carcinoma broncogénico ,Tuberculosis pulmonar - Abstract
Tuberculosis and cancer are two processes in relationship. The relation between both are studied. We analyzed retrospectively the culture-positive tuberculosis cases in from 1999 to 2002. We described the six cases with tuberculosis and cancer. One hundred and five cases of tuberculosis were observed, 6 cases (5,7%) had cancer. Four cases were pulmonary tuberculosis, one tuberculous pleurisy and other urinary tuberculosis urinary. The two cases with bronchogenic neoplasm had a diagnosis of tuberculosis at same time than cancer. The diagnosis of neoplasm was previous than tuberculosis in two cases (breast neoplasm and hypernephroma), and posterior in others two cases (breast and colon neoplasm). Half of theses patients died. In patients with neoplasm, the possibility of coexist tuberculosis is not depreciable, previous, concomitant or after the diagnosis of neoplasm.

- Abstract
Background: STAT-ON™ is an objective tool that registers ON-OFF fluctuations making possible to know the state of the patient at every moment of the day in normal life. Our aim was to analyze the opinion of different Parkinson's disease experts about the STAT-ON™ tool after using the device in a real clinical practice setting (RCPS)., Methods: STAT-ON™ was provided by the Company Sense4Care to Spanish neurologists for using it in a RCPS. Each neurologist had the device for at least three months and could use it in PD patients at his/her own discretion. In February 2020, a survey with 30 questions was sent to all participants., Results: Two thirds of neurologists (53.8% females; mean age 44.9±9 years old) worked in a Movement Disorders Unit, the average experience in PD was 16±6.9 years, and 40.7% of them had previously used other devices. A total of 119 evaluations were performed in 114 patients (range 2-9 by neurologist; mean 4.5±2.3). STAT-ON™ was considered "quite" to "very useful" by 74% of the neurologists with an overall opinion of 6.9±1.7 (0, worst; 10, best). STAT-ON™ was considered better than diaries by 70.3% of neurologists and a useful tool for the identification of patients with advanced PD by 81.5%. Proper identification of freezing of gait episodes and falls were frequent limitations reported., Conclusion: STAT-ON™ could be a useful device for using in PD patients in clinical practice., (Copyright © 2020 Sociedad Española de Neurología. - Abstract
Objective: Learn how the Ministry of Public Health (MSP, the Spanish acronym) of Ecuador uses health technology assessment (HTA) in decision-making on the purchase of drugs that are not on the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM)., Methods: Information from databases of the Health Intelligence Directorate (DIS, the Spanish acronym) and the National Directorate of Drugs and Medical Devices (DNMDM, the Spanish acronym), was used to compare decisions made by both entities, to learn about the use and consistency of HTA reports in decisions on purchasing drugs not included in the NLEM., Results: From 2012 to 2015, 227 reports were issued, of which 87 cover drugs; 36, devices; 29: medical procedures; 34: health programs; and 41: other medical technologies. The DNMDM requested 59 of the reports on drugs. There was 80% agreement in decisions made by the two directorates that participate in the process., Conclusions: The MSP, through the DIS, began using HTA in 2012. Given that the majority of reports evaluate drugs, it is essential that reports be prepared for other types of medical technologies and that they be prepared and used as widely as possible. Despite a high level of agreement in decisions, it is important to continue to improve the reports' scope and quality, and to monitor adoption and dissemination of authorized and funded technologies to learn the effectiveness and impact of HTA in Ecuador.

- Abstract
Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is the use of medical grade maggots of the fly Lucilia sericata for wound debridement. Recent observations show that MDT decreases bacterial burden as well. Venous ulcers are the most commonly seen in wound clinics and require, besides adequate treatment of venous hypertension, proper wound bed preparation with debri dement of necrotic tissue and control of potential infections. To evaluate the efficacy of MDT in venous ulcers a randomized controlled trial was designed to compare MDT to surgical debridement and topical application of silver sulfadiazine (SSD) in 19 patients for 4 weeks. The study variables were area reduction, wound bed characteristics, pain, odor, anxiety and bacterial burden using quantitative tissue biopsies. MDT was effective as surgical debridement associated with topical SDD in the debridement of the wound and in reducing its size. A significant difference was observed in the reduction of bacterial burden in favor of the MDT group. Odor and anxiety increased in the MDT group without any difference in the pain intensity between groups. In conclusion, this study suggests that MDT is as effective as surgical debridement for the debridement of necrotic tissue and promote wound healing in venous ulcers and better at reducing bacterial burden.

- Abstract
Introduction: There is a high prevalence of sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD). AIMS. To assess some basic metric attributes of the SCOPA-Sleep scale, a measure for PD patients; secondary objective: to check the impact caused by the sleep disorder on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients and their caregivers., Subjects and Methods: 68 PD patients and their main caregivers; measures: Hoehn and Yahr staging, SCOPA-Motor, Clinical Impression of Severity Index (CISI-PD), PDSS, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, SCOPA-Psychosocial, and EuroQoL. Carers filled in a PDSS questionnaire about patient sleep and HRQoL measures (SF-36, EuroQoL). SCOPA-Sleep acceptability, scaling assumptions, internal consistency, construct validity and precision were determined., Results: SCOPA-Sleep acceptability and scaling assumptions resulted satisfactory, although the nocturnal sleep subescale (SC-Ns) showed a mild ceiling effect (22.1%) and a defective convergent validity was found for daytime sleepiness (SC-Ds) item 6. Internal consistency also was satisfactory for both scales (alpha = 0.84 and 0.75, respectively). The correlation between SC-Ns and PDSS was high (rs = -0.70), as it was between SC-Ns and PDSS questionnaire by caregiver (rs = -0.53). The corresponding coefficients with the SC-Ds gained lower values (rs = -0.41 y -0.50). Standard error of measurement was 1.45 for the SC-Ns and 1.76 for the SC-Ds. Both, patient and caregiver HRQoL showed a loose association with the sleep measures., Conclusion: SCOPA-Sleep is a feasible, consistent, and useful scale for assessment of sleep disorder in PD patients. A weak association between sleep disorder and HRQoL was found.

- Abstract
Prognosis in prostate cancer is determined, in greater part, by the presence of metastases. Bone metastases can occur in any part of the skeleton even, for example, at the base of the skull. We present a case of a 78 year old male who, in December 2001, presented with paralysis of the third cranial nerve. The NMR and CAT scans were normal and circulating levels of PSA were elevated. He was referred to the Urology Service where the treatment guidelines included complete androgen block. Subsequently, he developed retro-orbital pain, divergent strabismus and palpebral ptosis. CAT and NMR indicated a soft tissue mass at the sphenoid level. Treatment was Gamma Knife Radio-surgery. Since August 2004, in conjunction with the latest rise in PSA, the patients general status deteriorated considerably and he was referred to the Oncology Service. There was an increase in the paralysis of the third, fourth and sixth cranial nerve (complete left ophthalmoplegia) and left-central facial paralysis. Metastases from prostate cancer can be disseminated via the lymphatic or the blood system. Currently, there are more metastases from large-size tumours. Metastases are critical in prostate cancer because of their adverse effect on the patients survival. Measurements of circulating levels of prostate specific antigen and prostate acid phosphatase are very useful in the clinical diagnosis of the primary tumour, or its metastases.

- Abstract
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) may associate an axonal neuropathy, a somatic and autonomic neuropathy and a very infrequently sensory neuropathy (with or without xanthomata). The aim of this paper is to describe the case of a 46 year old man diagnosed with PBC in stage I-II and a progressive sensory neuropathy (axonopathy) confined to his upper limbs with distal predominance. It had progressed slowly an began asymmetrically. A complete clinical study excluded other causes of neuropathy. We followed him clinically and electromyographically and he remains stable after two years evolution. The sensory neuropathy in this case, a primary biliary cirrhosis, is compatible with an assymetric sensory neuropathy limited to the upper limbs with assymmetric beginning.

- Abstract
Objective: To describe the outbreak of cholera that occurred in Ecuador in 1998 during the El Nino weather phenomenon, to present data on the resistance of the circulating strains of Vibrio cholerae to antimicrobial drugs, and to describe the preventive measures taken by health authorities in order to reduce the impact of the disease., Methods: The epidemiological data came from three sources: 1) the registry of the National Bureau of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador, 2) the registry of the National Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and 3) the final report of the Training Program for the Fight against Cholera and Diarrheal Diseases. Isolation, identification, and serotyping was done of V. cholerae in the feces samples from 10% of the suspected cholera cases that were identified between 1 January and 31 December 1998. The suspected cases were defined by the sudden appearance of watery diarrhea, with or without dehydration, in epidemic areas. The strains that were isolated were submitted to a standard antibiogram by the diffusion method, in which the following antibiotics were tested: amoxicillin, tetracycline, trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole, vibriostatic compound O/129, nalidixic acid, erythromycin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, chloramphenicol, and colistin., Results: In 1998 there were 3 755 cases reported in 17 of the 21 provinces of the country. This corresponds to an incidence rate of 53.96 per 100 000 population. Thirty seven patients died, for a case fatality rate of 0.97%. A total of 301 strains of V. cholerae were isolated in the 637 suspected-cholera samples that were processed; all corresponded to V. cholerae O1, El Tor, subtype Ogawa. All of the strains were sensitive to tetracycline and to quinolones; 5.6% of the strains were resistant to erythromycin. The only strain resistant to amoxicillin was multiresistant. Officials in Ecuador implemented a series of preventive measures, and the surveillance system was strengthened in order to reduce the impact of the disease., Conclusions: The preventive measures helped to reduce the impact of the 1998 cholera epidemic in Ecuador, in terms of both incidence and the case fatality rate. Given the overall sensitivity of the strains to the antimicrobial drugs, there is no reason to change the current treatment regimens in the country. Taking into account the frequency of natural disasters in Ecuador and the relation that they have to the reappearance of cholera, interventions should be designed that make it possible to prevent and control the reappearance of the disease and its spread to the most vulnerable provinces of the central Sierra mountainous region and the eastern part of the country.

Unlabelled: To determine the frequency and distribution of cysticercosis in Peru, we have reviewed the post mortem examinations of 12 years in the morgue in Lima (necropsies of persons apparently healthy, who died suddenly for different reasons) and in 11 hospitals: 6 in Lima (5 from adults and 1 from children) and from 5 hospitals from other cities located north and south of the capital. The material includes 50 000 necropsies and in those the frequency of cysticercosis was determined; its geographical distribution by states and regions and the frequency by age and sex. Comparison with other similar studies done in Latin America is made and prevalence determined. Frequency of porcine cysticercosis was determined in 82 452 animals killed in Lima in a 3 years period., Conclusions: frequency of cysticercosis in Peru's hospitals is 1.15%, while in the morgue, which represents approximately what happens in general population in 0.15%. Prevalence is 450 for 100 000 inhabitants.
