Producción Científica, Magnesium (Mg) is an essential divalent cation involved in various enzymatic reactions that regulate vital biological functions. The main goal was to evaluate Mg status and its association with nutritional indicators in 78 children and adolescents with chronic diseases. We assessed an‐ thropometric, biochemical, diet, body composition, and bone densitometry valuations. Serum Mg and Ca levels were determined using the standardized method and diet calcium (Ca) and Mg con‐ sumption by a prospective 72 h diet survey. Mean serum Ca (9.9 mg/dL), Mg (2.08 mg/dL) dietary Ca (102% DRI: Dietary Reference Intake), and Mg intake (105% DRI) were normal. A total of 45% had hypomagnesemia, 12% had hypermagnesemia, and 26% and 24% had inadequate and high Mg intake, respectively. Only 6% of patients had poor Mg intake and hypomagnesemia, and 54% and 90% of our series had an elevated serum Ca/Mg ratio > 4.70 (mean 4.79) and a low Ca/Mg intake ratio < 1.70 (mean 1.06), respectively. Both Ca/Mg ratios were linked with the risk of developing other chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, syndrome metabolic, and even several cancers. Therefore, 79% of children and adolescents with chronic diseases were at ele‐ vated risk of having abnormal Mg status and developing other chronic illnesses.

Introducción: La hipertensión es un factor de riesgo cardiovascular y en 90% de los casos se desconoce el mecanismo que la inicia. Recientemente, se considera que la hipertensión es un síndrome de anormalidades metabólicas y estructurales, en el que las especies reactivas derivadas del oxígeno (EROs) juegan un papel fisiopatológico preponderante en su desarrollo. Objetivo: Determinar los niveles séricos de zinc, selenio y magnesio en personas normotensas e hipertensas. Asimismo, valorar la actividad de la enzima superóxido dismutasa (SOD) y los niveles de sustancias reactivas al ácido tiobarbitúrico (TBARS) en ambos grupos de estudio. Diseño: Estudio analítico observacional, tipo casos y controles. Lugar: Centro de Investigación de Bioquímica y Nutrición, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Material biológico: Sangre de pacientes normotensos y con hipertensión leve. Intervenciones: Se obtuvo las muestras de sangre de 20 pacientes normotensos y 20 con hipertensión leve, con edades entre 50 y 60 años, después de un ayuno de 12 horas, realizándose el estudio en suero y sangre total. Principales medidas de resultados: Variación de niveles de TBARS, oligoelementos (Se, Zn y Mg), medición de actividad de SOD eritrocitario. Resultados: En el grupo de hipertensos, se obtuvo incremento significativo de magnesio y TBARS y disminución significativa de zinc y de la actividad de SOD. Conclusiones: Se demuestra el compromiso del estrés oxidativo en pacientes con hipertensión leve. La hipermagnesemia podría explicarse por el daño a los elementos formes de la sangre., Introduction: Hypertension is a cardiovascular risk factor and the initial mechanism is unknown in 90% of the cases. Currently hypertension is considered a syndrome with metabolic and structural abnormalities where oxygen reactive species (ORS) play a preponderant pathophysiological role. Objective: To determine zinc, selenium and magnesium serum levels in hypertensive and normotensive subjects, and to measure superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in both groups. Design: Analytical observational, case-control study. Setting: Biochemistry and Nutrition Research Center, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru. Biological material: Normotensive and mild hypertensive patients blood samples. Interventions: Blood samples from 20 normotensive subjects and 20 patients with mild hypertension aged 50 to 60 years were obtained after 12-hour fasting. We studied serum and whole blood. Main outcome measures: Serum determination of TBARS and oligoelements (Zn and Mg), measurement of SOD erythrocytic activity. Results: In the hypertensive group we obtained significant increase in magnesium and TBARS, and significant decrease in zinc and SOD activity. Conclusions: We demonstrated the occurrence of oxidative stress in mild hypertensive patients. Hypermagnesemia could be explained by blood elements injury.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 1996-01-01 Background and objectives - The use of magnesium sulphate for the prevention of seizures in pre-eclampsia may induce hypermagnesemia. Clinical and experimental studies are not in agreement about the effects of magnesium on the renal hemodynamics and function. We therefore studied the effects of hypermagnesemia on the renal hemodynamics and function of dogs anesthetized with pentobarbitone. Methods - Sixteen mongrel dogs were anesthetized with pentobarbitone 30 mg.kg-1 and submitted to extracellular ) and mechanical ventilation with room air. The dogs were volume expansion with Ringer's solution (0.4 ml.kg.min allocated into two groups of 8 animals, for the study of renal hemodynamics and function following the administration of 5 mg.kg-1 of pentobarbitone (Group 1 - control or of pentobarbitone associated with magnesium sulphate in the dose (Group 2). The parameters studied were: PAH of 140 mg.kg, administered in 15 minutes, followed by 80 mg.kg-1.h-1 clearance, creatinine clearance, osmolar clearance, free water clearance, renal blood flow, renal vascular resistance, filtration fraction, urinary volume, plasmatic and urinary osmolarity, urinary and fractionary excretion of sodium and potassium, measured at five moments: 15 (M1), 30 (M2), 60 (M3) and 75 (M4) minutes after the first supplementary dose of pentobarbitone and 15 minutes (M5) after the second supplementary dose in Group 1. In Group 2, the moments M3, M4, M5 were 15, 30 and 60 minutes after the priming dose of magnesium sulphate and during the maintenance dose. Results - In Group I no significant changes were observed in renal hemodynamic parameters and creatinine clearance. The extracellular volume expansion increased urinary volume and decreased urinary osmolarity as a consequence of sodium, potassium and free water clearance. The fractionary excretion of sodium was maintained. The plasmatic osmolarity increased. In Group 2, renal hemodynamic parameters and creatinine clearance were also maintained. There was an increase in renal sodium clearance, as detected by the increase in the fractionary excretion of sodium. Conclusions - Magnesium sulphate did not produce significant changes in renal hemodynamics and facilitated the renal excretion of sodium in dogs anesthetized with pentobarbitone.
