We report the case of an older infant with no prior morbidity that approximately 3 weeks after receiving MMR vaccination (measles, mumps, rubella) was hospitalized for feverish symptoms, increased parotid volume and compromised consciousness. Aseptic meningitis was diagnosed, detecting pleocytosis in the CSF, predominantly mononuclear, and confirming by molecular biology, presence of parotid virus in CSF. A study was carried out by the Institute of Public Health of Chile, where serology (IgM and IgG) was positive. Saliva sample confirmed the etiology of parotid virus with genotype N. The evolution was favorable and at 6-month follow-up, there were no sequelae. Given this clinical situation, information regarding the association and causality of this clinical entity and the MMR vaccine, focused on different strains of the mumps virus, was reviewed.

Vaccines are an essential tool for the prevention of infectious diseases. However, false ideas and rumours with no scientific foundation about their possible negative effects may dissuade people from being vaccinated, with the consequent risks for the health of the population. The objective of this article is to evaluate the origin and the arguments of some of the most frequent mistaken ideas and rumours about the possible adverse effects of vaccines. Some clearly established adverse effects are presented, as well as false beliefs about various vaccines and potential harm to health. Vaccines, like any drug, can cause adverse effects, but the possible adverse effects of vaccination programs are clearly lower than their individual (vaccinated) and collective benefits (those vaccinated and those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons). The possible adverse effects attributable to vaccines should be detected by powerful and well-structured pharmacovigilance systems., (Copyright © 2018 The Authors. Introduction: Vaccination is the most effective public health intervention of all times, reducing the death and morbidity rates derived from multiple infectious diseases. In many cases, the administration and reception of vaccines is delayed due to the fear of allergic reactions; this is frequent among patients with allergy to egg who need the triple viral vaccine. Objective: To evaluate the frequency of reactions after the administration of triple viral vaccine (Measles, Mumps and Rubella, MMR) in an egg-allergic population. Materials and methods: We conducted a multi-center retrospective study (2014-2016) including patients with egg allergy who visited an allergology center and required the administration of the triple viral vaccine. Results: A total of 94 patients met the selection criteria. From these patients, 68.2% had cutaneous symptoms, 22.3% had an anaphylactic reaction, 5.3% had gastrointestinal symptoms, and 4.2% had respiratory egg-related symptoms. Regardless of the severity of their reaction to egg, all patients received the triple viral vaccine and in 100% of the cases, it was well tolerated. Conclusion: Although egg allergy is common in childhood, the risk of allergic reactions during the MMR vaccination in this population was similar to that in the general population, therefore, its use should not be deferred even in patients with a history of severe egg-related allergic reactions.

Egg allergy is one of the most common food allergies during childhood along with cow's milk allergy. The measles-mumpsrubella (MMR) vaccine is included in the pediatric immunization schedule and contains egg protein. The currently accepted opinion is that the MMR vaccination should be done in a single dose under medical observation in patients with egg allergy. Although it is reported that the MMR vaccine is safe for that patients, there are some patients who developed anaphylaxis. Generally, the development of anaphylaxis after the previous vaccination is reported as a contraindication. We present a successful administration of MMR vaccine by gradually increased doses for a patient who developed anaphylaxis after the previous vaccination., (Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría.)

Introduction: A Pharmacovigilance system is an important tool for post-marketing monitoring on vaccine safety. Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is a combined vaccine of live attenuated virus. Since its approval, and although the adverse events are considered generally mild, the vaccine has been widely questioned for the controversies arising around its safety. Our objective was to describe suspected adverse events related to MMR vaccine reported to the Valencian Pharmacovigilance Centre., Material and Methods: Descriptive study from cases reported between May 15th, 2005 and May 15th, 2010. After grouping the suspected adverse events by diagnostic criteria, a descriptive analysis of variables was performed., Results: After 545,830 doses administered, 96 notifications were reported (1.76 notifications/100,000 doses) including 181 adverse events. Fever (42.7%) and local inflammation (36.5%) were the most reported events. There were 8.3% notifications classified as severe. Recovery was complete in all cases., Conclusions: The suspected adverse events reported coincided with those described in the Summary of Product Characteristics of the vaccine. The frequency of reports was lower than previously published estimates. Despite the limitations, the data obtained allowed us to conclude that MMR vaccine has a good safety profile, according to previously published studies., (Copyright © 2012 Asociación Española de Pediatría. The paper of Wakefield et al. in The Lancet, triggered a negative reaction to the MMR vaccine, even though it was just a series of cases and the association between vaccination and autism could well be anecdotal. However, it was found that this association was spurious, not only because of hidden biases but also to alterations of the data and other improper behavior of the two authors that they were expelled from medical council. Finally, the article was removed from the magazine. This episode invites to think about the credibility and trust in the authorities and professionals to the population, as well as the suspicions that may arise when there are potential conflicts of interest among professionals, industry magazines and the population. A special area of interest is on the distorted expectations of health interventions, including vaccination, particularly with regard to both individual and collective prevention., (Copyright © 2011 SESPAS. Introduction: Of the different theories explaining the aetiology of autism, one that has achieved widespread popularity among the general public is the involvement of the MMR vaccine as the causation of autism. The connection between vaccines and autism rests upon two theories. On the one hand, the anti-measles fraction of the vaccine is attributed with the development of an enteropathy due to malabsorption, which would facilitate the absorption of toxic neuropeptides and the effects of this process on the brain would favour the appearance of autism. The other theory involves thimerosal (a combination of ethylmercury and thiosalicylate), which is used as a preservative in some vaccines, including the MMR. The data in favour of these hypotheses have led to a great amount of social alarm, especially in certain areas that are more inclined to accept 'alternative' therapies and hypotheses., Development and Conclusions: This article analyses the data on which the involvement of the MMR vaccine in autism is based. It also underlines the weakness of the anti-vaccine arguments, as well as the forceful, convincing response, based on experimental and epidemiological work, that has been generated following the notable social unrest. Running parallel to the scientific debate, there has also been a legal discussion, which has arisen as a consequence of the more than 5,000 lawsuits filed in the United States, and in which the claims for financial compensation together amount to two thousand million dollars. On 12th February 2009, following a court hearing in which the specific case of a girl called Michelle Cedillo was taken as an example, the court ruled that the overall weight of the evidence was overwhelmingly opposed to the theories put forward by the plaintiffs.

In Spain, for many years allergy to eggs was considered to contraindicate vaccines cultured in fibroblasts from chick embryos such as the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and influenza vaccines. Consequently, an alternative vaccine (Triviraten Berna) incubated in diploid human cells has been systematically administered to children who are allergic to eggs, without questioning tolerance to the standard MMR vaccine. After Biotech Bern Laboratory discontinued the production of Triviraten, this alternative was no longer available for children with egg allergy, who should receive a first dose of the MMR vaccine at the age of 15 months and a second one (booster dose) at the age of 3 years. In this context, from November 2004 to June 2005, a single dose of the MMR vaccine was administered to 40 children with allergy to eggs and none showed an adverse reaction. We conclude that this vaccine can be safely administered to this group of patients.

Objective: To describe epidemiological, clinical, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings in cases of aseptic meningitis associated with measles-mumps-rubella vaccination following a mass immunization campaign in the Brazilian state of Bahia in August 1997 promoted by the country's Ministry of Health, and to compare these cases to the cases of aseptic meningitis not associated with the vaccine that occurred in the same year., Methods: Between March 1997 and October 1997, all individuals between 1 and 12 years of age admitted to the Couto Maia Hospital (the Bahia reference hospital for infectious illnesses) with a clinical and laboratory diagnosis of aseptic meningitis were prospectively followed. The study population was divided into two groups: one with individuals who had received the vaccine, and one with individuals who had not received the vaccine. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory information was collected on both groups., Results: In September, following the vaccination campaign, 74 cases of aseptic meningitis were registered at the Couto Maia Hospital, versus the monthly average of 7.5 cases. We observed a greater frequency of nuchal rigidity and increased CSF cellularity among children whose meningitis was associated with the vaccine. However, encephalitic involvement was more frequent in the group of children with non-vaccinal meningitis., Conclusions: Although the course of post-vaccinal meningitis is more benign than that of other forms of the disease, its treatment generates costs related to ancillary exams and hospitalizations. Mass vaccination campaigns should employ less reactogenic vaccine strains.
