This work was developed to identify the stratification and mixing pattern in the Hatillo reservoir, the largest reservoir in the Greater Antilles and the reservoir with the greatest water storage capacity in the Dominican Republic, built in 1984 in the lower basin of the Yuna River for electric power generation, irrigation district and flood control. Fifty-two diurnal vertical profiles of temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen and pH in the limnetic zone of the reservoir from 2011 to 2021 were collected. Mixing is established when the difference between surface and bottom temperature is less than 1°C, that is, gradients less than 0.06°C per meter, total values of Relative Thermal Resistance to Mixing-RTR less than 40, that is, less than 1.8 per meter. The thermal monitoring carried out for ten years has allowed us to establish that the water masses of the reservoir remain thermally stratified most of the year, with annual mixing events lasting one month between December and March. The Hatillo reservoir is defined as a Warm Monomictic Lake according to the revision made by Lewis Jr. (1983a) to the classification of Hutchinson y Löffler (1956).

The Asian clam of the genus Corbicula is the most successful freshwater invader worldwide. In this research note, the presence of the Corbicula largillierti is recorded for the first time in the Lower São Francisco River. This record is based on the collection of living organisms from the Xingó Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir. This is the second corbiculid species recorded in the region. Further investigation is required on characteristics such as its distribution, interactions with native and other invasive species, as well as its possible environmental impact.

The foreland Claromecó Basin, located in the south-western sector of Buenos Aires province, Argentina, has a relevant economic and energetic interest due to the presence of coal layers contained in the Permian Tunas Formation, which might be considered effective source rock for gas resource generation. This study aims to reconstruct the diagenetic evolution of the Tunas Formation at the Claromecó Basin (PANG 0001 and PANG 0003 wells) and determine how the diagenesis affected the reservoir quality. To this purpose, core samples of the Tunas Formation were analysed using a combination of micro petrographic analyses (transmitted light, QEMSCAN, cathodoluminescence), fluid inclusions studies, and petrophysical methods (conventional core analysis, CCA). The analysed sedimentary successions are composed of sandstones interbedded with mudrocks, carbonaceous mudrocks, tuffs, and coals. Sandstones are medium- to fine-grained, framework-supported, and moderate-to-well-sorted. Authigenic minerals are calcite and laumontite, with minor proportions of quartz and feldspar overgrowths and clay minerals (illite, muscovite, and chlorite). Porosity is of secondary type, generated by fracturing and dissolution of feldspars and carbonate cement. Porosity determined by optical, QEMSCAN, and CCA analyses ranges from 0.1 to 4 %, with a permeability varying between 10-3 and 10-6 millidarcies. Fluid inclusion studies were performed in sandstone cements and calcite and quartz veins. Primary, pseudo-secondary, and secondary aqueous and organic fluid inclusions were recognized. Organic fluid inclusions show green and light blue fluorescence, which indicates the presence of hydrocarbons. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions obtained from microthermometry studies range from 124 to 200 °C in cements and 110 to 230 °C in veins. These temperatures confirm a metagenesis stage for the Tunas Formation, within the wet to dry gas window. Given the petrophysical characteristics of the analyzed levels, sandstones could be considered unconventional tight gas sandstone reservoirs. Obtained results point out that during early diagenesis, physical compaction and precipitation of carbonate cement are the principal factors that significantly reduce the primary porosity. Furthermore, in the mesogenesis stage, chemical compaction, calcite and zeolite cements precipitation, and quartz overgrowths further contribute to porosity loss. However, secondary porosity was produced during mesogenesis due to the dissolution of unstable grains and calcite cements caused by the action of acid fluids generated during the decomposition and maturity of organic matter. Additionally, secondary porosity was also generated by fracturing due to burial and tectonic stress and by the increased pore pressure during hydrocarbon generation and migration. The reservoir properties of the Claromecó Basin have been controlled mainly by diagenetic and tectonic processes that acted during the burial history of the basin. Clasts and cements composition also influenced diagenesis together with the presence of organic-rich rocks, which could generate hydrocarbons.

The availability, quality and management of water constitute essential activities of national, regional and local governments and authorities. Historic annual rain (between 1961 and 2020) in Chambas River Basin (Central Cuba) was evaluated. Two remote sensing methods (Normalized Difference Water Index and RADAR images) were used to calculate the variation of water area and volumes of two reservoirs (Chambas II and Cañada Blanca) of Ciego de Ávila Province at end of wet and dry seasons from 2014-2021. The results showed that mean annual rain was 1330.9 ± 287.4 mm and it did not showed any significant tendency at evaluated period. For both reservoirs, mean water areas measured with two methods were 19 % and 8 % smaller than the mean water area reported by authorities for the same period. The static water storage capacity (water volume) of both reservoirs varied (as area) between seasons with the greatest volume in both reservoirs recorded in October of 2017 (30.5 million of m3 in Chambas II and 45.1 million of m3 in Cañada Blanca reservoir). Large deviations of water area and volumes occurred during the dry season (lower values) and the wet season of 2017 (influenced by rain associated to of Hurricane Irma) and wet season of 2020 (influenced by rain associated to tropical storm Laura). Calculated area – volume models with significant statistical correlation are another useful tool that could be used to improve water management in terms of accuracy and to increase reliable results in cases where gauge measurements are scarce or not available.

Sediments containing high concentrations of heavy metals in reservoirs, lakes and rivers, can resuspend into aquatic environments and negatively impact water quality. The concentrations of 10 elements were studied in surface sediments and water from the Aguada Blanca Reservoir, Peru, an important water source to 1,080,000 people in the arid province of Arequipa. Sediment and water samples were collected from nine points in 2019. The enrichment, accumulation, ecological risk and distribution of metals in sediment were determined, and the information on heavy metals in water was used to assess the quality of the aquatic system. Spatially, heavy metals showed variations throughout the study area, with an increase for most elements near the deepest part of the reservoir. The average concentration of Cd in sediment was 4 times higher than the natural background. In water, As was the only element that exceeded Peruvian regulations (As > 10 μg L-1). The Enrichment Factor (EF) and Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo) of metals in sediment presented the following order: Cd> As> Pb> Zn> Cu> Ni> Cr, with Ni and Cr being the only elements that did not present enrichment. The most considerable Igeo was Cd (1.21 ± 1.45), presenting a classification of moderately to heavily contaminated. The integrated potential ecological risk (RI) of Cd presented high values in 5 points of the reservoir. The information developed will assist in establishing effective control strategies for the quality of the aquatic system.

Recently it has been pointed out that an outstanding application of an IBM quantum computer is to reverse the arrow of time (Lesovik et al., 2019). It is explored such a possibility in a two qubits system coupled to a common structured reservoir at zero temperature. It is shown that population rates of the quantum states become the same both towards the remote past and towards the remote future. A two qubits system in presence of noise can reverse the arrow of time.

The understanding of the relationships between the planktonic communities in a reservoir allows us to infer possible changes in the redistribution of matter and energy flows in these systems. This work proposes a dynamic model for the trophic network of the Riogrande II tropical reservoir, which integrates the planktonic trophic chains of detritus and grazing, limiting the prey-predator interactions by introducing the prey meeting factor (pmf). We built a dynamic model of mass balance supported by an extensive bibliographic search. The limitations of consumers and resources were represented simultaneously by means of the pmf. The data used to validate the model were compiled from previous investigations carried out in this reservoir from 2010 to 2013. The values of pmf that we found in each simulation suggest that the top predator can access its main prey in certain concentrations of total phosphorus, with a probability of encounter ranging from 9.3 % to 17.7 %. Our simulations indicate that most of the primary production is poorly used by the primary consumers in the photic zone, however, it enters in the flows of the detrital chain and supports the production of zooplankton almost entirely. According to this finding, the biomass densities obtained in the previous studies can be better explained by the causal relationships assumed in this model.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) of the genus Acanthamoeba are ubiquitous and amphizoic protozoa that colonize aquatic and terrestrial habitats and can serve as reservoirs for other microorganisms. They are considered econoses that can cause severe and rare pathologies. Due to limited epidemiological data available, the objective of this study was to investigate the presence of Acanthamoeba in coastal wetlands of the southeast of Buenos Aires province and evaluate their association with bacteriological and environmental variables. From February 2021 to July 2022, 22 seawater samples were collected at different points along the coast of the city of Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Environmental parameters were determined and physicochemical and bacteriological studies, morphological identification, cultures and molecular typification were conducted. Regardless of the environmental and bacteriological variables, the presence of Acanthamoeba spp. was molecularly confirmed in 54.54% of the samples, being the first report of these protozoa in seawater in Argentina., (Copyright © 2024 Asociación Argentina de Microbiología. Objective. To establish the prevalence, diversity and antimicrobial resistance of the zoonotic species of Arcobacter in healthy pigs at slaughterhouse level. Material and Methods. Fifty fecal samples were taken by rectal swabs from healthy pigs, before the beginning of the slaughter at the slaughterhouse of Loja city, Southern Ecuador. Sampling was performed using a non-probabilistic method for convenience. Isolation of Arcobacter strains was done by microbiological methods and species identification using biochemical and molecular (multiplex PCR) tests. Antimicrobial behavior was performed using the disk diffusion method. Results. The four zoonotic species of Arcobacter were found. The isolation rates were A. thereius (18.0%), A. skirrowii (18.0%), A. cryaerophilus (6.0%) and A. butzleri (2.0%). High resistance to ciprofloxacin was found and multi-resistant strains were isolated from these four species. Conclusions. The fecal carriage of the zoonotic species of Arcobacter was demonstrated in pigs at slaughterhouse level. These species showed high resistance to ciprofloxacin being isolated muti-resistant strains among these four species.

ABSTRACT When a river is dammed, impacts differ according to distance from the dam under consideration, and sites closer to the dam are more affected than distant ones. Damming a river changes the flow and landscape characteristics, which, in turn, change the hydrological, limnological and ecological dynamics, such as biological production, species distribution, and ecosystem structuring, functioning and services. This study evaluates the distribution pattern of the Siluriformes (catfish) fish species near a small hydroelectric power plant in the Jaguariaíva River, considering three distinct distances from the dam: upstream region, reservoir and downstream region. Samples were taken with gillnets between March 2013 and December 2014. The abundance and richness of the Siluriformes species were evaluated. A permutational multivariate analysis of variance was used to access possible differences in species composition among sites. Finally, a permutational analysis of multivariate dispersion was used to assess possible differences among sampling sites and to examine composition similarities among sites. A total of 840 Siluriformes individuals were captured, distributed among ten species and four families. The highest richness was observed in the downstream region, while the lowest richness was observed in the reservoir area. Differences in the abundance of species were observed between the three distinct regions; the downstream region presented the highest species abundance (CPUE), whereas the lowest abundance was observed in the dam region. Hypostomus paulinus and Hypostomus strigaticeps were abundant species, but exclusively sampled in the downstream region, while Corydoras ehrhardti and Cambeva diabola presented their highest abundance in the upstream region. The distinct longitudinal distribution of Siluriformes observed in this study can be interpreted as indicative of the negative effects of damming. Our study suggests that building small dams may result in negative impacts on the fish assemblage, impacts comparable to those of large reservoirs in terms of spatial changes. It is fundamentally necessary to better evaluate the environmental impacts of small dams in the Neotropical region, especially because few is known about them and how such impacts are comparable to impacts of larger reservoirs.

Vossoroca is a reservoir in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Although it is located near big cities and can be used as a human water supply, it has remained unstudied. Concentrations of toxic metals and arsenic in sediments, water, liver, gills, and muscle of Geophagus brasiliensis from the reservoir were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Histological analyses were performed on the gills and the livers using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, respectively. The results showed that Vossoroca sediments were moderately polluted by copper, chromium, nickel and arsenic. Cadmium was above legal limits in the water. Histopathological assessment revealed epithelial alterations in the secondary lamella to be the most common abnormality observed in the gills and necrosis, melanomacrophage centers in the livers. In conclusion, although the reservoir is located in an Environmental Protection Area, it is negatively affected by human activity. Further, Geophagus brasiliensis was a suitable bioindicator for metal pollution studies.

Several adsorption isotherm models were analyzed for the purpose of fi tting the experimental data published by Gasparik et al. (2012) obtained in a methane adsorption experiment on a shale sample from the Posidonea formation in the netherlands. the following are the ten models used in this study; some of them consist of two parameters such as Langmuir, temkin and freundlich, the three parameter models: Langmuir, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Toth and Sips, four parameters: Dubinin-Astakhov and Fritz-Schlunder and the fi ve-parameter Fritz Schlunder correlation. The results show a better fi t to the experimental data for those models with the highest number of parameters. Subsequently, The total gas storage capacity in a hypothetical formation was calculated using some data of the Posidonea formation and the methodology proposed by Ambrose et al (2010), which was modified afterwards by substituting the term taking into account the adsorbed gas for the models mentioned earlier in this article in order to determine their influence in the free and adsorbed gas calculations. In this way, the models with the lowest Average Percentage Error (APE) generally calculated a lower volume of adsorbed and total gas compared to those models with the highest APE, which indicates the importance of a proper model selection for calculating reserves, since it implies high technical and economic impact.

Escherichia coli Shiga toxin-producer (STEC) is an emerging pathogen worldwide being recognized as a cause of severe human diseases, such as hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The aim of this work was to determine the role of companion animals as potential reservoirs of STEC in the epidemiological chain of HUS. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Between October 2010 and April 2013, samples from 162 dogs and cats were processed performing multiplex PCR for detection of stx1, stx2 and rfbO157 genes. Was not detected positive signal by PCR in any of the processed samples. These results from the absence of STEC in animals studied could be because feeding them with feed resulted primarily because the consumption of contaminated foods, such as ground beef, meat products raw or undercooked, constitutes a major infection source for this microorganism.

This study presents the first record of Chantransia macrospora in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. Analyses of periphytic algae revealed C. macrospora individuals associated in particular with shells of Melanoides tuberculatus, a non-native species, suggesting that C. macrospora have been introduced into systems associated with the gastropods. In this context, new records of C. macrospora are still expected for the Brazilian semi-arid region in the next years.

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 can establish a latent infection in different kind of cells, which constitute the cellular reservoirs for the virus and allow its maintenance in the body indefinitely, even in patients with antiretroviral treatment. The main reservoirs of the HIV-1 are resting CD4+ T cells, although cells like monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cells, and other cells like hematopoietic stem cells and mast cells may be reservoirs of the virus. There are different mechanisms that contribute to the establishment and maintenance of latency in those cells, and include transcriptional interference, low availability of transcription factors, chromatin condensation, some microRNA that block viral translation, and so on. The knowledge of these mechanisms is crucial for the development of new drugs that may eliminate the virus from the body and lead to a cure.

Objective. The length-weight relationship and condition factor of fish are indicators of physiological well-being and may be related to reproduction and feeding periods. These attributes were evaluated for a population of Hoplosternum littorale sampled in the Santo Anastácio Reservoir (Fortaleza, Northeastern Brazil). Materials and methods. One hundred and fifty-five specimens were collected with gillnets between October 2009 and March 2010, and standard length (cm), total weight (g), sex and gonadal maturation stage were registered. Results. The observed length-weight relationship indicated negative allometric adjustment (2.72). Only seventy individuals were evaluated for the condition factor analysis, sexual determination and gonadal state classification. Condition factor values peaked in November and plummeted in February, no statistical differences in sex ratio (χ²=13.683; p=0.057) were observed. Mature females were collected throughout the study period. Conclusions. The results indicate that the population of H. littorale in the Santo Anastácio reservoir presents growth deficiency and changes in reproductive strategy in this hypereutrophic environment.

Micropterus salmoides es un pez de importancia para la pesca deportiva en la mayoría de los embalses de México y del mundo, por lo que en el embalse Gustavo Díaz Ordaz se realizó un estudio sobre aspectos reproductivos entre agosto 2008 y marzo 2011. Se recolectaron 938 organismos, a los cuales se les midió la longitud (Lt cm), peso (Pt g), se determinó el sexo, índice gonadosomático, factor de condición, fecundidad y talla de primera madurez. La longitud y peso de los ejemplares recolectados varió de 15.9 a 63 cm (37.4±78.0) y de 57 a 4 431g (731.7±619.0), respectivamente. La relación peso total-longitud total se ajustó a un modelo tipo potencial, el crecimiento fue alométrico positivo, no se obtuvieron diferencias significativas entre machos y hembras (F=0.9955, p=0.3187). La proporción macho-hembra fue 1:0.83. Los desoves masivos inician en diciembre y finalizan en abril. La talla de primera reproducción fue de 33.7cm y la fecundidad promedio de 32 294±12 878.7 ovocitos/hembra. El índice gonadosomático se mantuvo bajo desde mayo hasta noviembre y alto entre enero y marzo. El factor de condición registró valores altos previos al desove y disminuyó al final del periodo reproductivo.

Rickettsiosis: a deadly emerging and re-emerging disease in Colombia. Rickettsiosis was first described in Colombia in 1937 byDr Luis Patiño during an outbreak of a disease with unspecific signs. Rickettsia is a genus of Gram-negative intracellular obligatorybacteria having caused several epidemics around the world, and are transmitted mainly by ticks, fleas, lice and mites. The most fatalwithin this group of diseases is known as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), which is caused by Rickettsia rickettsia. There is alsothe endemic typhus caused by Rickettsia typhi and epidemic typhus caused by Rickettsia prowazekii. In Colombia, several outbreaks ofRMSF have occurred during the last decade. The best known among those have hit the municipalities of Necoclí and Turbo, in Antioquiain 2006 and 2008 respectively, and Los Cordobas in the department of Cordoba in 2007. The goal of this review is to describe the state ofthe art of rickettsiosis, a forgotten lethal disease that has re-emerged in our country, and leave some questions as an inspiration for future research that will hopefully lead scientists to a better understanding of this entity potentially endemic in some areas of Colombia.

Ecological niche modeling is an important tool to evaluate the spatial distribution of terrestrial species, however, its applicability has been little explored in the aquatic environment. Microcystis sp., a species of cyanobacteria, is widely recognized for its ability to produce a group of toxins known as microcystins, which can cause death of animals as fish, birds and mammals depending on the amount of toxin absorbed. Like any taxonomic group, cyanobacteria has environmental thresholds, therefore, a suitable ecological niche will define their distribution. This study was conducted in Aguamilpa Hydroelectric Reservoir, an artificial ecosystem that started operations in 1994. In this system we evaluated the potential distribution of Microcystis sp., by generating a prediction model based on the concept of ecological niche MAXENT, using a Digital Elevation Model in cells of 100 m x 100 m (1 ha) spatial resolution and monitoring eleven physicochemical and biological variables and nutrients in water. The distribution maps were developed using ArcMap 9.2®. The results indicated that Microcystis sp., is distributed mainly in the upper tributary basin (Huaynamota basin) during the dry season. There was less chance to find cyanobacteria in the entire system during the cold dry season, while during the warm dry season cyanobacteria was recognized at the confluence of two rivers. During the rainfall season there were no reports of cyanobacteria presence. This species is often associated with arising trophic processes of anthropogenic origin; therefore, attention is required in specific areas that have been identified in this work to improve Aguamilpa’s watershed management and restoration. It was also recognized the importance of phosphorus and nitrogen interaction, which determines the distribution of Microcystis sp., in the Aguamilpa Reservoir. The results of this study demonstrated that ecological niche modeling was a suitable tool to assess the spatial distribution of microalgae in freshwater environments.

The Kpong Headpond was the second created on the Volta River after Akosombo Dam, primarily as a source of hydroelectric power generation and potable water supply, and additionally, it has supported some fish production in Ghana since impoundment. The changes in fish community of the Kpong Headpond were studied to provide baseline information for strategies formulation to support the socio-economic development of the reservoir. The study identified changes in the fish community of the reservoir by comparing occurrence, composition, relative abundance and relative importance estimates of fish species, families and trophic groups, from available previous studies in the reservoir. From the collated information all fishes identified in the reservoir were categorised based on occurrence and importance as disappeared, appeared, permanent, declined or important, to show current status. The results indicated that the fish community has experienced a shift in the composition and relative abundance of important species, families and trophic groups in terms of number and weight, while remaining ecologically balanced. Representatives of the families Osteoglossidae, Centropomidae and Characidae have declined while representatives of the families Claroteidae, Cyprinidae and Cichlidae have increased. The aufwuch-detritus and herbivores declined while semi-pelagic omnivores increased resulting in a shift in dominance to benthic and semi pelagic omnivores. The appearance of five species and the disappearance of 25 others indicated a dynamic restructuring of the fish community in the reservoir, as expected. Enforcement of fishing regulations including the use of appropriate gear and fishing methods, fishery access control, promotion of culture-based fisheries and improvement in fisher education are recommended topics for sustainable fisheries in the reservoir. Epub 2011 December 01.La laguna Kpong se convirtió en la segunda represa creada en el río Volta, después de Akosombo, principalmente para la generación de energía hidroeléctrica y suministro de agua potable, además, contribuye con la producción pesquera de Ghana desde que se formó la misma. Los cambios en la comunidad de peces de la laguna Kpong fueron estudiados con el fin de proporcionar información de referencia para la formulación de estrategias que contribuyan con el desarrollo socio-económico de la represa. El estudio identificó los cambios en la comunidad de peces de la represa mediante la comparación de la ocurrencia, composición, abundancia relativa y estimaciones de importancia relativa de las especies de peces, familias y grupos tróficos. De manera que con base en estudios previos disponibles efectuados en la represa y cotejando tal información con el estado actual de los peces identificados en este sitio, éstos se clasificaron según su presencia e importancia de la siguiente manera: desaparecido, aparecido, permanente, en disminución o importante. Los resultados indicaron que la comunidad de peces ha experimentado un cambio en la composición y abundancia relativa de especies importantes, familias y grupos tróficos en términos de número y peso, aunque continúan permaneciendo ecológicamente balanceados. Representantes de las familias Osteoglossidae, Centropomidae y Characidae han disminuido mientras que los representantes de las familias: Claroteidae, Cyprinidae y Cichlidae han incrementado. Los perifiton-detritívoros y herbívoros disminuyeron, mientras que los omnívoros semipelágicos aumentaron, lo que resulta en un cambio en la dominancia de los bentónicos y los omnívoros semi-pelágicos. La aparición de cinco especies y la desaparición de otras 25, indica una reestructuración dinámica de la comunidad de peces en la represa, como se esperaba. Para una pesca sostenible en la represa se recomienda la aplicación de reglamentos pesqueros, que incluyan el uso de equipo y métodos de pesca apropiados, control de la pesca, promoción de una cultura basada en la pesca y el mejoramiento de la educación de los pescadores.

Despite being one of the most well-known cichlid fish of importance to artisanal and sport fishing, and among the largest fishes in the Neotropics, data on digestive tract anatomy of peacock basses (Cichla spp.) are largely lacking, especially for non-native populations. in this paper, we describe for the first time the digestive tract morphology of Cichla kelberi, a voracious piscivore that was introduced in the 1950s into an oligotrophic and physically low-complex impoundment in Brazil. Peacock basses were collected between 1994 and 2002 in Lajes Reservoir, through gillnets (25 to 55mm mesh; 20-50x2m), seines (10x2.5m; 8.0mm mesh), cast nets and angling. All the fishes were kept on ice in the field and then transferred to the laboratory, where they were identified, measured, weighed and dissected for digestive tract analyses. The index of Relative importance-IRI was calculated for diet characterization while linear and non-linear regressions were performed to assess growth patterns of four morphological characters related to feeding (e.g. mouth width, mouth height, stomach length and intestine length) and the number of gill rakers during the C. kelberi ontogeny. Most digestive tract structures were directly related to the piscivorous diet of C. kelberi, indicating that peacock bass is a diurnal, bathypelagic and gape-size limited predator that feeds largely on shallow-water prey species within the littoral zone. Mouth width and height grew allometrically (b>1) with the size of peacock bass, broadening the size range in which prey can be eaten, but especially for predators smaller than ~400mm of total length. Differently, stomach and intestine lengths increased isometrically (b=1), which could constrain prey consumption for adult C. kelberi, especially those at advanced stages of gonadal maturation. The presence of longer-drawn, sharp and furcated gill rakers in C. kelberi may be related to increased prey retention in the resource-limited Lajes Reservoir, but further studies are necessary whether such features are randomly triggered by genetic or phenotypic anomalies, or effectively bring ecological advantages to the predator. In addition to contribute to improve the current biological knowledge on peacock basses, our results can be also useful to further comparisons on whether those morphological features related to feeding will change with transitions on prey consumption by C. kelberi and/or with the particular conditions of the invaded ecosystem. Epub 2011 September 01.A pesar de ser uno de los peces cíclidos más conocidos por su importancia para la pesca artesanal y deportiva, y entre los más grandes peces en el Neotrópico, los datos sobre la anatomía del tracto digestivo de los pavones (Cichla spp.) están bastante deficientes, especialmente para las poblaciones no nativas. En este trabajo se describe por primera vez la morfología del tracto digestivo de Cichla kelberi, un piscívoro voraz que se introdujo en la década de 1950 en un embalse oligotrófico y físicamente de baja complejidad en Brasil. Los pavones se recogieron entre 1994 y 2002 en el embalse Lajes, con redes de enmalle (25 a 55mm de malla, 20-50x2m), redes de cerco (10x2.5m, 8.0mm de malla), atarrayas y pesca. Todos los peces se mantuvieron en hielo en el campo y luego fueron trasladados al laboratorio, donde fueron identificados, medidos, pesados y disectados para el análisis del tracto digestivo. El Índice de importancia Relativa, el IIR se calculó para la caracterización de la dieta, mientras que las regresiones lineales y no lineales se realizaron para evaluar los patrones de crecimiento de cuatro caracteres morfológicos relacionados con la alimentación (por ejemplo: ancho de la boca, altura de la boca, longitud del estómago y longitud del intestino) y el número de branquiespinas en la ontogenia en C. kelberi. La mayoría de las estructuras del tracto digestivo estaban directamente relacionadas con la dieta de los piscívoros C. kelberi, lo que indica que el pavón es un depredador diurno, batipelágico y limitado por el tamaño de la boca abierta ya que se alimenta en gran medida de presas en aguas poco profundas de la zona litoral. El ancho de la boca y la altura tuvieron un crecimiento alométrico (b>1) con el tamaño de pavones, y se amplió el rango de tamaño en el que las presas se pueden ser comidas, pero sobre todo para los depredadores menores de ~400mm de longitud total. A diferencia, las longitudes del estómago y el intestino aumentaron isométricamente (b=1), lo que podría limitar el consumo de presas para adultos de C. kelberi, especialmente aquellos en etapas avanzadas de la maduración gonadal. La presencia de branquiespinas marcadas, agudas y furcadas en C. kelberi puede estar relacionada con un incremento en la retención de presas en los recursos limitados del embalse Lajes, pero son necesarios más estudios si tales características son desencadenadas al azar por anomalías genéticas o fenotípicas, o efectivamente son una ventaja ecológica para el depredador. Además de contribuir con el mejoramiento del conocimiento biológico actual en los pavones, nuestros resultados también pueden ser útiles para estudiar si las características morfológicas relacionadas con la alimentación van a cambiar con las transiciones en el consumo de presas por C. kelberi y/o con las condiciones particulares del ecosistema invadido.

The large population contingent and the precarious urban planning in the metropolitan region of São Paulo have resulted in uncontrolled growth in areas where springs exist, generating strong pressures on the reservoirs. Concomitantly, a lack of articulation between public and private policy has led to various socio-environmental conflicts in the Billings watershed. This spring, which is responsible for the direct and indirect supply of water to millions of people, represents an enormous challenge for water resource management. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the seasonal limnological conditions of the Billings Complex, in particular the Rio Grande and Taquacetuba branches, and discuss the implications for the management procedure applied in the branches. Physical (water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, suspended material, organic and inorganic suspended material) chemical (dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus and nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium and inorganic phosphorus) and biological (chlorophyll-a) variables of the water were analyzed and the Trophic State Index was calculated. The results indicate a hypertrophic state in the Taquacetuba branch. The Rio Grande branch presented a mesotrophic state which is, however, artificially maintained due to copper sulfate and hydrogen peroxide treatments. The results are also discussed in light of CONAMA Resolution 357/2005. Levels of chlorophyll-a and total phosphorous in the Taquacetuba branch do not conform to the proposed class of use, class I. In this branch, monitoring must be intensified and measures adopted to reduce the level of nutrients in the main body of the Billings complex.

Phytoplankton species are an important basis of the food web for various systems such as pelagic, coastal and lake. Due to their photosynthetic capacity, this community is sensitive to changes in light availability, temperature, nutrient concentrations, herbivores consumption, parasitism and competition. Therefore, they show a high spatial and temporal variability related to environmental changes both natural and anthropogenic. However, as any taxonomic group, phytoplankton species have environmental thresholds, ecological niches that define their distribution. This study was located in Aguamilpa Dam, an artificial aquatic reservoir which started operations in 1994 for electric energy production. In this system the potential distribution of the phytoplankton was evaluated, where the highest species richness and restricted distribution areas were identified. Potential distribution models based on ecological niche definition were generated using ArcMap 9.2® with Maxent (Maximun Entropy Method). The development of distribution maps was carried out using Digital Elevation Models in cells of 100 m x 100 m (1 ha), based on nine physico-chemical and biological water parameters monitored in the reservoir. The highest species richness areas were found in the Huaynamota river tributary and at the station called La Confluencia, while the less abundance areas were found in the Santiago river tributary during warm and cold dry seasons with a great abundance of cyanophyta. During the rainfall season, the Huaynamota river tributary diversity areas were extended and the presence of some dominant species of cyanophyta were indentified. These species can be associated with trophic processes related to anthropogenic pollutants in the reservoir. This study illustrates the potential application of niche modeling approach in aquatic ecosystems.

Oreochromis aureus es un importante recurso pesquero en el embalse, por lo cual se realizó un estudio sobre su edad y crecimiento desde noviembre del 2006 a septiembre del 2007. Se realizaron muestreos bimensuales con redes agalleras de varios tamaños de luz de malla, y también se colectaron peces de la captura comercial. Se midió la longitud total (Lt), el peso total (Pt), el sexo y la madurez gonádica. La edad se determinó mediante lecturas de marcas de crecimiento en escamas y su validación se realizó mediante el índice marginal e índice gonadosomático. Se colectaron 384 peces, las tallas y pesos variaron de 125 a 345mm y de 40 a 671g, respectivamente. El crecimiento en longitud y peso se describe mediante las ecuaciones de von Bertalanffy: Lt = 416 [1-e-0.3682 (t+0.4975)] y Pt = 1323[1- e-0.3682(t+0.4975)]]3.0652. Se determinaron dos marcas de crecimiento durante el año. Estas fueron asociadas con factores metabólicos y medioambientales como la reproducción y la oscilación de temperatura, combinada con procesos de mezcla y disminución de los niveles del agua del embalse.Age and growth of Oreochromis aureus (Pisces: Cichlidae) in Sanalona Reservoir, Sinaloa, Mexico. Oreochromis aureus is an important fishing resource in this reservoir but little biological information is available for management purposes. To study its age and growth in the site, we obtained samples using gill nets of six mesh sizes, and collecting fish from commercial catches, on a bimonthly basis, from November 2006 to September 2007. Total length (Lt), total weight (Pt), sex and gonadosomatic maturity were analyzed. Age determination was done by readings of scale growth marks, and its validation was made by the marginal and gonadosomatic index. A total of 384 fish were collected. Length and weight varied from 125 to 345mm and from 40 to 671g, respectively. Growth in length and weight are described by the following von Bertalanffy equations: Lt=416 [1-e-0.3682 (t+0.4975)] and Pt=1323[1-e -0.3682(t+0.4975)]]3.0652. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido no Reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica (UHE) de Peti, localizado nos Municípios de Barão de Cocais, Santa Bárbara e São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, em Minas Gerais, durante o período de setembro de 2004 a maio de 2005, visando avaliar a influência do uso do solo do entorno do reservatório na qualidade da água. Para isso, foram escolhidos cinco pontos no reservatório que representassem os diferentes usos e coberturas do solo e analisados os parâmetros físico-químicos: temperatura, oxigênio dissolvido, condutividade elétrica, pH, turbidez, cor, sólidos totais, sólidos totais fixos, sólidos totais voláteis e sólidos totais em suspensão, em três profundidades de cada ponto de coleta; o parâmetro transparência foi analisado em cada ponto. Os resultados de qualidade da água foram divididos em época de estiagem (setembro, outubro, abril e maio) e chuvosa (novembro, dezembro, janeiro, fevereiro e março) e, no geral, apresentaram variação sazonal. Na época chuvosa, parâmetros como sólidos, turbidez e cor aumentaram a concentração; foi observada também maior variação entre as profundidades na época de estiagem, e à medida que se adentrava no reservatório (montante para jusante) parâmetros como turbidez, cor e sólidos totais em suspensão diminuíam em função da sua própria dinâmica. Pelos parâmetros analisados, não foi possível detectar nitidamente a influência dos diferentes usos do solo na qualidade da água.This work was developed at the Reservoir of the Hydroelectric Power Station (UHE) of Peti, located in the municipalities of Barão de Cocais, Santa Bárbara and São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from September 2004 to May 2005, to evaluate the influence of the land use around the reservoir upon water quality. For this purpose, five points in the reservoir representing the various land plant covers and uses were chosen and the following physical and chemical parameters were analyzed: Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, Electric Conductivity, pH, Turbidity, Color, Total Solids, Fixed Total Solids, Volatile Total Solids and Total Solids in Suspension in three depths at each point of collection. The parameter Transparency was analyzed in each point. The results of water quality were divided into dry weather period (September, October, April and May), and rainy period (November, December, January, February and March). They usually showed a seasonal variation. In the rainy period, parameters such as solids, turbidity and color increased. A greater variation among the depths in the dry weather period was also observed. When going farther inside the reservoir (from upstream to downstream), parameters such as turbidity, color and total solids in suspension decrease because of their dynamics. By the parameters analyzed, it was not possible to clearly detect the effect of the various land uses on the water quality.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar as plantas aquáticas e os níveis de infestação de cada espécie em Porto Primavera antes do enchimento final do reservatório. Foram avaliados todos os focos de vegetação aquática no reservatório (72 pontos), sendo os pontos demarcados com um aparelho de GPS. As espécies foram identificadas e estimouse visualmente (tamanho da área) a distribuição proporcional das plantas no foco de infestação. Após a identificação, foram encontradas 18 espécies de plantas aquáticas vegetando no reservatório, das quais foram determinadas a frequência de espécie de planta aquática e a distribuição dentro do sistema de geração de energia. As espécies encontradas no reservatório foram: Eichhornia crassipes, Eichhornia azurea, Pistia stratiotes, Paspalum repens, Cyperus brevifolius, Paspalum conspersum, Echinochloa polystachya, Egeria densa, Egeria najas, Polygonum hidropiperoides, Polygonum lapathifolium, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Eleocharis sellowiana, Nymphaea ampla, Pontederia cordata, Salvinia auriculata, Salvinia rotundifolia e Typha angustifolia. As maiores frequências relativas foram observadas em: E. azurea (36,11%), E. crassipes (16,67%), P. stratiotes (13,89%), S. auriculata (13,89%), C. brevifolius (11,11%) e P. lapathifolium (6,94%).The objective of this work was to identify the aquatic plants and their infestation levels in Porto Primavera Reservoir in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, before the reservoir was filled. The aquatic vegetation in the dam (72 sites) were evaluated and marked with GPS equipment. The species were identified and a visual estimate (site size) of the proportional distribution of the plants in the infestation foci was carried out. After plant identification, eighteen macrophyte species were found in the dam and their frequency and distribution were determined as follows: Eichhornia crassipes, Eichhornia azurea, Pistia stratiotes, Paspalum repens, Cyperus brevifolius, Paspalum conspersum, Echinochloa polystachya, Egeria densa, Egeria najas, Polygonum hidropiperoides, Polygonum lapathifolium, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Eleocharis sellowiana, Nymphaea ampla, Pontederia cordata, Salvinia auriculataa, Salvinia rotundifolia, Typha angustifolia. The highest relative frequencies were observed in: E. azurea (36.11%), E. crassipes (16.67%), P. stratiotes (13.89%), S. auriculata (13.89%), C. brevifolius (11.11%), and P. lapathifolium (6.94%).

El objetivo de este trabajo fue hacer un levantamiento entomofaunístico, en un embalse Tropical, utilizando como organismo indicador al pez Trachelyopterus striatulus. Fue analizada la dieta de 383 T. striatulus, muestreados desde abril de 1999 hasta marzo de 2000. La Frecuencia de presencia y el porcentaje de similitud de Schoener fueron aplicados para analizar la dieta. Para identificar variaciones de la entomofauna entre las estaciones del año y las zonas del embalse fueron aplicadas estadísticas univariadas y multivariadas. La dieta estuvo compuesta principalmente por insectos (92.14%) siendo los más frecuentes (%FO): Hymenoptera (57.90%), Odonata (39.76%), Trichoptera (27.41%), Ephemeroptera (26.25%) y Coleoptera (28.96%). Formicidae fue dominante en todas las estaciones del año, en especial en la primavera, mientras, Trichoptera y Ephemeroptera fueron más consumidos en las demás estaciones del año. En la zona alta, predominaron Trichoptera y Ephemeroptera, mientras en las zonas baja e intermedia predominaron Formicidae y Belostomatidae. T. striatulus presenta potencial como muestreador de la entomofauna contribuyendo para el conocimiento de la biología y ecología de los insectos y la ecología trófica de los organismos acuáticos.The fish Trachelyopterus striatulus (Siluriforms: Auchenipteridae) used to sample insects in a tropical reservoir. The study of aquatic environments is sometimes difficult to do with normal sampling methods that use gears. Insectivorous fishes represent good users of these ecosystems and analyzing the aquatic organisms present in fish stomachs, is an alternative way to determine resource abundance and utilization. In this paper, the potential of Trachelyopterus striatulus as an insect sampler was examined through dietary analyses of 383 individuals caught between April 1999 and March 2000 in Lajes Reservoir, a 30 km² oligotrophic impoundment in Southeast Brazil. We estimated frequency of occurrence and Schoener’s index of similarity. Diet changes among seasons and reservoir zones were addressed with DCA and ANOVA analyses. Its diet was 92.1% insects (ten orders and nine families). Hymenoptera (57.90%), Odonata (39.76%), Trichoptera (27.41%), Ephemeroptera (26.25%) and Coleoptera (28.96%) were the most common groups. Highest insect occurrence and richness were recorded in autumn-summer, a period of greater rainfall and insect activity. Formicidae, the dominant prey item in all seasons, appeared to be especially important in spring, a season marked by shortness of food resources. Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera were the most consumed prey items in the other seasons. Highest insect occurrence and richness were recorded in the middle and upper reservoir zones, respectively. Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera prevailed in the upper zone, where small pristine rivers and tributaries are abundant, whereas Formicidae and Belostomatidae predominated in the lower and middle zones. Because of its abundance in many freshwater ecosystems of Brazil, the ubiquity of insects in its digestive tract and the low level of prey degradation, T. striatulus has potential as an insect sampler of Neotropical reservoirs. Morphometrics and physico-chemical parameters of Oyun reservoir, Offa, Nigeria (a small shallow tropical African Reservoir) were used to estimate the potential fish yield of the reservoir according to the morpho-edaphic index (MEI). Physico-chemical characteristics of the water body were sampled monthly from three stations between January 2002 and December 2003 with standard methods. Estimates of the potential fish yield were obtained using the physico-chemical characteristics of the reservoir and the relationship Y = 23.281 MEI 0.447, where Y is the potential fish yield in kg/ha, MEI is the morpho-edaphic index (given in μS/cm and estimated by dividing the mean conductivity by the mean depth). The reservoir mean depth and conductivity values were 2.6m and 113.10μS/cm respectively, while its potential fish yield was estimated at 125.72 kg/ha. This estimate was higher than other small shallower and larger African reservoirs. The reservoir high ionic content, high nutrient and dissolved oxygen levels, good pH, low level of pollution and shallow depth were responsible for the high estimate of the fish yield. In order to realize this high potential fish yield and sustainable exploration of the fisheries, effective management of the reservoir to curb eutrophication should be adopted, while other management practices such as stocking and conservation of desirable and indigenous fish species, implementation of fishing regulations and adoption of best management practices should be implemented. Las características físico-químicas del cuerpo de agua fueron evaluadas mensualmente en tres estaciones, entre enero 2002 y diciembre 2003, con métodos estandarizados. Las estimaciones del rendimiento pesquero potencial se obtuvieron utilizando las características físico-químicas del Embalse y la relación Y = 23.281 MEI 0.447, donde Y es el rendimiento pesquero potencial en kg/ha, e IME es el índice morfo edáfico (dado en μS/cm y calculado al dividir la conductividad mediav por la profundidad promedio). Los valores medios de profundidad y conductividad del Embalse fueron 2.6m y 113.10μS/cm respectivamente, mientras que el rendimiento pesquero potencial se estimσ en 125.72 kg/ha. Este estimado fue superior al reportado para otros embalses mαs pequeρos y menos profundos, así como para otros más grandes de Africa. Las condiciones de altos contenidos de iones, nutrientes y niveles de oxígeno disuelto, así como el pH adecuado, bajos niveles de contaminación y la poca profundidad, pudieron haber contribuido con esa alta productividad. Con el fin de garantizar un alto potencial de rendimiento y la sostenibilidad de las pesquerías en el Embalse, se recomienda una gestión eficaz, para reducir la eutrofización, así como la implementación de otras prácticas de manejo, tales como la aplicación de regulaciones pesqueras y la adopción de buenas prácticas de gestión, que promuevan el mantenimiento del stock y la conservación de especies autóctonas.

The influence of physico-chemical properties of Oyun Reservoir, Offa, Nigeria (a shallow tropical African reservoir) on its zooplankton composition and abundance were investigated at three stations for two years between January 2002 and December 2003. Diversity is not high: only three groups of zooplankton were found: Rotifera with eight genera; and Cladocera and Copepoda with three genera each. Rotifera dominated numerically (71.02%), followed by Cladocera (16.45%) and Copepoda (12.53%). The zooplankton was more prevalent during the rainy season, and there were variations in the composition and abundance along the reservoir continuum. Factors such as temperature, nutrients, food availability, shape and hydrodynamics of the reservoir, as well as reproductive strategies of the organisms, strongly influence the generic composition and population density of zooplankton. Prevention of ecological deterioration of the water body would greatly should result in a more productive water body, rich in zooplankton and with better fisheries. Rev. Biol. Epub 2009 December 01.La influencia de las propiedades fisicoquímicas del Reservorio Oyun, Offa, Nigeria (un embalse tropical somero) sobre la composición y abundancia del zooplancton fue investigada en tres estaciones entre enero de 2002 y diciembre de 2003. La diversidad no resultó muy alta con tres grupos de zooplancton: Rotifera con ocho géneros, y Cladocera y Copepoda con tres géneros cada uno. Rotifera dominó (71.02%), seguido de Cladocera (16.45%) y Copepoda (12.53%). El zooplancton fue más común durante la temporada de lluvias, y hubo variaciones en su composición y abundancia a lo largo del embalse. Factores tales como la temperatura, los nutrientes, la disponibilidad de alimentos, la forma y la hidrodinámica del embalse, así como las estrategias reproductivas de los organismos, influyen fuertemente en la composición genérica y la densidad poblacional del zooplancton. La prevención del deterioro ecológico de esta masa de agua, resultaría en un cuerpo de agua más productivo, rico en zooplancton y con mejor pesca.

Agricultural and fisheries activities around the watershed of an African tropical reservoir (Oyun reservoir, Offa, Nigeria) were found to contribute significantly to water quality deterioration of the dam axis of the reservoir, leading to eutrophication of that part of the reservoir. This is evident from the high amount of nitrate (6.4 mg/l), phosphate (2.2 mg/l) and sulphate (16.9 mg/l) in the water body which was higher than most other reservoirs in Nigeria. These nutrients originate in fertilizer run-offs from nearby farmlands and were found in higher concentrations in the rainy season which is usually the peak of agricultural activities in the locality. The eutrophication was more pronounced on the dam axis because it is the point of greatest human contact where pressure and run-off of sediments were high. The eutrophication altered the food web cycle which consequently affected the fish species composition and abundance with the dominance of cichlids (planktivorous group) and decline of some species in the fish population. Best management practices (BMP) to control and reduce the eutrophication and improve water quality and fish assemblages should be adopted and adapted to suit the situation in the reservoir. Rev. Epub 2009 September 30.Las actividades agrícolas y pesqueras que se desarrollan alrededor del embalse tropical africano de Oyun, Offa, Nigeria, contribuyen de forma significativa al deterioro de la calidad del agua, provocando eutroficación. Esto es evidente a partir de la gran cantidad de nitrato (6.4 mg / l), fosfato (2.2 mg / l) y sulfato (16.9 mg / l), si se compara con otros embalses de Nigeria. Estos nutrientes proceden de fertilizantes utilizados en áreas agrícolas y las concentraciones aumentan en la estación lluviosa cuando aumentan las actividades agrícolas en la zona. La eutroficación es más pronunciada donde existe mayor actividad humana, y altera la cadena trófica y en consecuencia, la composición íctica, con predominio de los cíclidos y disminución de otros peces. Se requiere manejo de la cuenca para reducir la eutrofización y mejorar la calidad del agua y los peces.

O zooplâncton do reservatório de Mundaú, Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil foi estudado quanto a variabilidade temporal (entre os horários e períodos seco chuvoso) e espacial (nas regiões pelágica e litorânea em diferentes profundidades) correlacionando-as com as variáveis ambientais e com o fitoplâncton. Vinte e três táxons infragenéricos e cinco subgenéricos de zooplâncton foram encontrados. De forma geral, Rotifera foi o grupo dominante em todo o estudo. O fitoplâncton foi dominado pelas cianobactérias. No período seco, as variáveis físicas certamente controlaram o desenvolvimento do zooplâncton, favorecendo o estabelecimento de elevadas densidades algais. No período chuvoso, a correlação do zooplâncton com os níveis de nutrientes do sistema na região pelágica provavelmente conduziu a uma competição de recursos entre o fitoplâncton e o zooplâncton, controlando as densidades algais.Zooplankton from Mundaú reservoir, State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil was studied concerning temporal (hours and seasonal period) and spatial (pelagic and coastal regions in different depths) variabilities, correlating them to the environmental variables and the phytoplankton. Twenty-three infrageneric and five subgeneric zooplankton taxa were observed. On the whole, Rotifera was the dominant group during this study, especially influenced by the oxygen concentrations. Phytoplankton was dominated by Cyanobacteria. On the dry period, physical variables certainly controlled the zooplankton's development, allowing elevated algal densities. On the rainy period, zooplankton correlation with the system's nutrients levels on pelagic region probably conduced to a resources competition between phytoplankton and zooplankton, controlling algal densities.

This research analyzed the degree of sedimentation in Cachoeira Dourada reservoir Brazil, belongingto the Paranaíba hydrologic catchment basin. Were evaluated bottom sediments of the lake, in an areaof 74 km2. Were considered particle and bathymetric parameters. The results, presented on the maps,showed the distribution of the particles chacteristics and allowed to estimate the volume of sediments.The bottom deposits are essentially constituted of silt and clay in the portion near the dike; of fine andvery fine sandy material in the middle sector of the reservoir and, in the beginning of the reservoir, wehave since silt just large sand. By comparison of topographic data, since the construction of the reservoir,with present measured bathymetric data, the Cachoeira Dourada reservoir lost 38.5 % of its originalstoring capacity. The expected reservoir useful life, estimated in this research, is of about 145 years,following this deposition rhythm.

Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar alterações na taxocenose de peixes devido à instalação da Pequena Central Hidrelétrica Salto Forqueta no curso do rio Forqueta. A área de estudo localiza-se na bacia hidrográfica do rio Taquari, entre os municípios de Putinga (margem esquerda do rio) e São José do Herval (margem direita do rio). O estudo abrangeu quatro etapas: Etapa I - dez/2000 a fev/2002 (anterior ao represamento), Etapa II - dez/2002 a jan/2004 (primeiro ano subseqüente ao represamento), Etapa III - maio/2004 a abr/2005 (segundo ano após o represamento) e Etapa IV - maio/2005 a jul/2006 (terceiro ano após o represamento). As amostragens foram realizadas com redes de espera de malhas diversas. Foram registradas 28 espécies na Etapa I, 21 espécies na Etapa II, 19 espécies na Etapa III e 18 espécies na Etapa IV, sendo que as maiores taxas de abundância nas quatro etapas de monitoramento variaram entre as espécies Astyanax spp., Hemiancistrus punctulatus Cardoso & Malabarba, 1999, Steindachnerina biornata (Pearson, 1924), Oligosarcus jenynsii (Günther, 1864) e Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824). Verificaram-se diversas alterações na ictiocenose local, porém, as alterações não se mostraram estatisticamente significativas.This study aimed to verify the alterations on the fish assemblage due the installation of the Small Hydroelectrical Power-Station Salto Forqueta in the course of the Forqueta River. The study area is located in the Taquari River basin, between the municipalities of Putinga (left margin of the river) and São José do Herval (right margin of the river). The study encompassed four phases: Phase I - from dec/2000 to feb/2002 (before damming), Phase II - from dec/2002 to jan/2004 (first year following damming), Phase III - from may/2004 to apr/2005 (second year following damming) and Phase IV - from may/2005 to jul/2006 (third year following damming). The samples were taken using fishing nets with diverse mashes. It was registered 28 species during Phase I, 21 species during Phase II, 19 species during Phase III and 18 species during Phase IV. The abundance rates, during the four phases, varied among the following species: Astyanax spp., Hemiancistrus punctulatus Cardoso & Malabarba, 1999, Steindachnerina biornata (Pearson, 1924), Oligosarcus jenynsii (Günther, 1864) and Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824). It was verified a range of alterations in the local fish assemblage, nevertheless, these alterations were not statistically significant.

Com o objetivo de conhecer a produção de biomassa de Egeria densa, foi monitorado o crescimento de 50 ápices de diferentes plantas, em três reservatórios situados na cidade de Paulo Afonso-BA. Os ápices inicialmente medidos receberam uma marcação e foram coletados após 15 dias. O material foi conduzido ao laboratório para medição da biomassa, após secagem a 70 ºC. De todos os meses analisados, observou-se nas estações de Taquari e Moxotó maior crescimento em maio/99, com médias de 9,14 ± 3,6 e 4,2 ± 2,1 cm/ápice/15 dias, respectivamente, assim como na estação de Quebra em maio/98 (11,3 ± 5,3 cm/ápice/15 dias), correspondendo ao período chuvoso. A biomassa também apresentou produções máximas no período chuvoso, com 0,26 ± 0,17, 0,41 ± 0,06 e 0,10 ± 0,5 g MS/ápice/15 dias nas estações de Taquari, Quebra e Moxotó, respectivamente. E. densa demonstrou ter capacidade de acumular grande quantidade de massa seca, sobretudo no período de maior precipitação, quando geralmente ocorre maior disponibilidade de nutrientes.In order to estimate biomass production of Egeria densa, the growth of 50 different plant shoots was monitored at three reservoirs, both located in Paulo Afonso-Bahia. The shoots were marked and had their length measured. Fifteen days later they were measured again, collected, dried at 70ºC and weighed. The following highest shoot elongation during the 15 days occurred in May 1999 in Taquari and Moxotó and May 1998 in Quebra: 9.14 ± 3.6, 4.2 ± 2.1 and 11.3 ± 5.3 cm/shoot, respectively, corresponding to the following highest biomass accumulations, 0.26 ± 0.17, 0.10 ± 0.05 and 0.41 ± 0.06 g of dry mass per shoot, respectively. Therefore, E. densa has a very high capacity of biomass accumulation, mainly during the rainy period when nutrient availability is at the highest.

Os autores descrevem o resultado de dois anos de investigação de um foco de Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana (LTA), ocorrida em área urbanizada em um conjunto habitacional na cidade da Manaus-AM. Chama atenção o fato de que este não é o padrão de ocorrência de surtos da doença na região, e sim interrupção da transmissão após urbanização. Foram investigados os animais considerados reservatórios em potencial para a leishmaniose em domicílios humanos e em áreas de floresta adjacentes. Foram testados anticorpos contra Leishmania spp em amostras de sangue de cães e detectada reatividade pela reação de imunofluorescencia indireta em oito (20,51 %) dos examinados. Entre os animais silvestres examinados a espécie Didelphis marsupialis foi predominante, com 20 exemplares capturados, sendo encontrados homoflagelados em três destes e lesões suspeitas de leishmaniose cutanea em dois. Acredita-se que um assentamento populacional desordenado ocorrido nas adjacências tenha causado o deslocamento das populações de vetores e reservatórios naturais em direção às casas do conjunto Hiléia propiciando o surto.This is the result of a two year follow-up of a Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) foci in the Hileia urban neighborhood in Manaus. It is important to point out that this is not the usual pattern of Leishmaniasis occurrence in this area. The authors investigated the animal potential reservoir in households and in the surrounding forest area. Samples were tested for leishmaniasis antibodies by RIFI. Eight (20.51%) of the examined domestic dogs showed reactivity. In captured wild animals, the Didelphis marsupialis was predominant in twenty specimens, three with homoflagelated in the blood and two with suspicious cutaneous lesions. We believe that the disordered population growth in the nearby area pushed the population of vectors and natural reservoir toward the homes in the Heleia neighborhood creating conditions for this outbreak.

Vibrio cholerae muestra gran diversidad serológica en base a su antígeno somático O, conociéndose al menos 200 serogrupos. De éstos, solamente O1 y O139 son causantes de epidemias o pandemias. En Latinoamérica el serogrupo O1 reapareció en 1991, tras cien años de no presentar brotes en el continente. Esta bacteria sobrevive y se multiplica asociada al plancton, independientemente de la aparición de infecciones humanas. Desde la década del noventa, en Tucumán, se detectaron casos esporádicos de diarrea por Vibrio cholerae no-O1. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue estudiar la posible relación entre la presencia de especímenes de fitoplancton, variables fisicoquímicas y aislamientos de Vibrio cholerae en ríos de Tucumán. Se realizaron 18 campañas en los ríos Lules y Salí entre 2003-2005. Se estudiaron las variables fisicoquímicas del agua (pH, temperatura, conductividad y oxígeno disuelto), el fitoplancton (riqueza y frecuencia relativa) y las cepas aisladas de V. cholerae. Los resultados evidenciaron diferencias en la calidad del agua, observándose períodos de anoxia en el río Salí. Las diatomeas sobresalieron en la mayoría de los meses y generalmente estuvieron en porcentajes superiores al 85 %. Sólo se aisló Vibrio cholerae no-O1, no-O139, detectándose más frecuentemente en los meses cálidos, con pH alcalino, aún con baja concentración de oxígeno.Vibrio cholerae shows a great serologic diversity in relation to his O somatic antigen and we know at least 200 serogroups. About these, only O1 and O139 are responsible of epidemics and pandemics. The serogroup O1 reemerged in Latin America in 1991 after being absent from the continent for nearly a century. This bacterium survives and grows up associated to plankton, independently of appearance of human infections. From 90 th decade, there were sporadic cases of diarrhea because of Vibrio cholerae O1 in Tucumán. The aims of this paper were to study the possible relation between phytoplankton species, physico-chemical variables and V. cholerae isolations in rivers of Tucumán. There were 18 sampling in the rivers Salí and Lules from 2003 to 2005. Physico-chemical variables of water (pH, temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen), phytoplankton (richness and relative frequency) and V. cholerae isolations were studied in this paper. Results showed differences in water quality, with anoxic periods in the River Salí. Diatoms were conspicuous in almost all months and generally there were in percentages upper 85 %. Just Vibrio cholerae non-O1, non-O139 was isolated, specially in months warmer with alkaline pH and also with dissolved oxygen low concentration.

Con el propósito de estudiar las características hidrobiológicas de dos columnas de agua en el embalse El Peñol-Guatapé, entre julio de 1992 y agosto de 1993 se realizaron muestreos mensuales en la cola del embalse y en aguas abiertas (Isla del Sol). En cada estación y a cinco profundidades se analizaron algunas variables fisicoquímicas, y en la zona eufótica se estudió la comunidad fitoplanctónica, excluyendo el grupo de las Diatomophyceas. En las dos estaciones se encontraron gradientes térmicos y químicos; desde el punto de vista hidrobiológico la calidad del agua fue oligomesotrófica. La producción primaria fue baja durante todo el período estudio y, al igual que las demás variables, estuvo fuertemente influida por la variación en los niveles del embalse en la época de estudio.Between July of 1992 and August of 1993 and with the purpose of studying the hydrologic characteristics of two water columns in the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir, monthly sampling in the reservoir's tail were carried out and in open water (Isla del sol). In each station and at five depths, some physical and chemical variables were analyzed; and in the fotic zone, the phytoplankton community was studied, excluding the Diatomophyceae group. Thermal and chemical gradients were found in the two stations and from the hydro-biological point of view, the quality of water was oligomesotrofic. The primary production was low during the entire period of sampling, and just as the other variables, it was deeply influenced by the variation in the reservoir levels at the time of study.

As espécies foram coletadas em quatro trechos ao longo de um gradiente formado pelo reservatório UHE Escola Engenharia Mackenzie (Capivara). A diversidade de espécies foi analisada pela constância, índice de Shannon-Wiener e similaridade da composição entre trechos através do coeficiente de Jaccard. O reservatório tem uma riqueza de peixes composta por 67 espécies incluídas em 5 ordens; 47% das espécies são constantes, 15 % são acessórias e 28% são acidentais. Os maiores índices de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener e similaridade de Jaccard foram obtidos em Cinzas e Tibagi, que são os trechos mais distantes da barragem e que apresentam grandes tributários. Os menores índices foram encontrados em Cruzália e Porecatu, os quais correspondem aos trechos com características, respectivamente, de ambientes lótico e semi-lótico. Este trabalho demonstra a extrema importância da presença dos tributários para a manutenção da diversidade das espécies em um reservatório, em função da preservação das características originais do sistema lótico naqueles trechos e conseqüente redução do impacto do represamento.Fish samples were taken in four stretches along a gradient formed by the UHE Escola Engenharia Mackenzie (Capivara) reservoir. The diversity of species was analyzed by the constance, index of Shannon-Wiener and similarity of the composition among stretches through the Jaccard's coefficient. The reservoir presents a richness of fishes composed by 67 species distributed in 5 orders; 47% of the species are constant, 15% are accessory and 28% are accidental. The highest values of Shannon-Wiener diversity and Jaccard's similarity were obtained in Cinzas and Tibagi, wich are the most distant points from the dam and which present large tributaries. The lowest values were found in Cruzália and Porecatu, which respectively correspond to the stretches with lotic and semi-lotic environmental characteristics. This work demonstrates the extreme importance of tributaries for the maintenance of species diversity in a reservoir, as a result of the preservation of the original characteristics of lotic systems in those river stretches and consequent reduction of the damming impact.
