1. Expanding Educational Leadership Theories through Qualitative Relational Methodologies

Abstract

Educational leadership is conceptualised through a relational framework and empirically understood through qualitative relational methodologies such as relational ethics, ethics of care and narrative inquiry. Empirical data from narrative interviews revealed that in many cases where the school principals honed values such as care and relational attributes in their daily leadership practices, learners were more likely to respond to such relational and caring practices, which they witnessed and experienced. It appears that relational methodologies can elicit relational leadership styles, which set caring and supportive examples for both teachers and learners, adding much worth to a favourable educational landscape.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the level of relationship between high performance leadership and organizational climate in a population of 280 workers of a Peruvian company in the industrial sector dedicated to modular construction. A total of 108 people who exercised some type of leadership according to the nature of their position was identified. The study was applied to the entire group by means of an analysis with Likert-type surveys. According to the results, the variable “high performance leadership” and “organizational climate” are significantly and positively correlated (0.812). The dimensions of the variable “high performance leadership” are “personal leadership”, “relational leadership” and “organizational-strategic leadership”. In the case of the dependent variable “organizational climate”, the dimensions are “personal factors”, “relational-group factors” and “organizational factors”. It is concluded that high performance leadership and all its dimensions are related to organizational climate., El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue determinar el nivel de relación entre el liderazgo de alto desempeño y el clima organizacional en una población de 280 trabajadores de una empresa peruana dedicada a la construcción modular en el sector industrial. Se identificó a 108 personas que ejercían algún tipo de liderazgo en función a la naturaleza de su cargo. El estudio se aplicó al total de este grupo por medio de análisis con encuestas de tipo Likert. Según los resultados, la variable «liderazgo de alto desempeño» y «clima organizacional» se correlacionan significativamente y en forma positiva (0.812). Las dimensiones de la variable «liderazgo de alto desempeño» son «liderazgo personal», «liderazgo relacional» y «liderazgo organizacional-estratégico». En el caso de la variable dependiente «clima organizacional», las dimensiones son «factores personales», «factores relacionales-grupales» y «factores organizacionales». Se concluye que el liderazgo de alto desempeño y todas sus dimensiones se relacionan con el clima organizacional.

3. A Narrative Inquiry into Rural School Leadership in South Africa

Abstract

This article attends to rural school leadership in two South African schools through the lens of the concepts of relational leadership and emotional labour. The inquiry draws on five years of guided conversations and observations that speak to leadership experiences of hope and anticipation as well as despair and disillusionment. I worked with one black male principal and one black female school principal from two rural schools in South Africa. Over time, the tone of their narratives changed from hope to hopelessness and resignation. The findings spoke to how commitment and care were overcome by the educational challenges, which involved hunger and poverty, orphaned learners, teen pregnancy, rape, departmental criticism and lack of support. Theoretically, this inquiry draws on the theories of relational leadership and emotional labour in rural education and empirical evidence was drawn from narrative inquiry.
