- Abstract
During a three-year period from 1993 to 1995, experiments were conducted to determine the effect of the maize-legume associations on soil fertility and their impact upon the yields of subsequent bean crops. We studied under Research Station conditions on an Oxisol soil and on drainage plots in Ultisol soil, the following associations: for the agro-ecosystem South of Havana oxisol we considered maize + caupi; maize + velvet bean; maize + canavalia; maize + crotalaria; maize + sesbania. While for the agro-ecosystem of San Juan and Martinez (Utisol) treatments were : maize, maize + caupi; maize + velvet bean; maize + canavalia; millet and fallow soil. The results showed that the intercropping of maize with legume was beneficial on the evaluated soil properties, and that, if combined with minimum tillage in the Oxisols , they complement the beneficial effects of both agronomic practices of that type of soil. The impact of these legume-maize-treatments in the subsequent cultivation of beans was significant on seed yield compared to the obtained after maize alone. The nutrient balance was favored by the recycling of nutrients from green manure left by the legume-maize treatments used. The recycling if nutrients made possible a nitrogen reduction of 25%, and one of 100% for P2O5 and K2O. In the Ultisol soils drainage plots where established, in addition to the mentionated effects, we observed an anti-erosive impact of the treatments which diminished soil losses as compared to maize alone and fallow soil.

- Abstract
Trials were established in a highly eroded Ultisol soil of sandy loam texture, of poor fertility, acid, and low in phosphorus and organic matter, located in the locality of La Leña in Pinar del Río province, Republic of Cuba. A study was carried ont in 1996 in two watersheds, in which were implemented conservation practices consisting of live barriers of Gliricidia Sepium L. (in the first watershed) and Vetiveria Ziznoide L. (in the second watershed) complemented with ground cover of maize associated with legumes followed by beans in succession. Results showed slight changes in slope between barriers with respect to the initial value (10% vs 9%). Values of total dry biomass in the associations were 17 and 15 t/ha, and ground coverage at 30 days was more than 70%. Profuse root colonization presented by the associations indicated an improvement in porosity of the soil, reflecting a positive tendency in the internal structure that has evolved to a porous state. Yields of maize were 2900 and 2000 kg/ha, and of bean were 1800 and 1630 kg/ha, which are relatively high values, considering the degraded condition of the soil.

Introduction: Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) has been defined as a dementia due to AD presenting before the arbitrarily established age of 65 (as opposed to late-onset Alzheimer's disease or LOAD). There is still little research about other age sub-groups, the use of so-called senile dementia has been banished, usually including it within the late-onset Alzheimer's dementia. To the extent of our knowledge, there are no studies comparing the neuropsychological features of very-late-onset patients with early and late-onset ones., Methods: We retrospectively selected 359 patients with a diagnosis of probable AD dementia. We subdivided patients into three groups attending to the age of onset of the disease: early-onset AD (EOAD; younger than 65 years old), late-onset AD (LOAD; between 65 and 80) and very-late-onset AD (VLOAD; defined here as onset age older than 80), and then we compared their neuropsychological results., Results: AD patients with a younger age at onset scored worse on attention, executive function and visuospatial skills, while older-onset patients scored worse in memory tasks and language. Patients with a very-late-onset differed from the late-onset ones in a greater impairment of semantic fluency and naming., Conclusion: Although the point of separation between EOAD and later-onset forms of EA at the age of 65 is an arbitrary one, our study shows that there are significant differences between these groups from a neuropsychological point of view. However, these differences do seem to follow a linear trend with age, rather than representing fundamentally distinct clinical pictures., (Copyright © 2023 SEGG. Publicado por Elsevier España, S.L.U. - Abstract
Objective: To explore the main psychosocial aspects which have influence on the coping with the disease in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their family carers., Design: An exploratory qualitative study which constitutes the second phase of a mixed-methods project., Setting: Multicenter study carried out in Navarre in 2014 in collaboration with Primary Care of Navarre Service of Health-Osasunbidea, Clínica Universidad de Navarra and Navarre Association of Parkinson's patients., Participants: A total of 21 participants: 9 people with PD, 7 family carers and 5 healthcare professionals., Method: Participants were selected through purposive sampling. Focus groups were conducted until a suitable saturation data was achieved. Transcriptions were analysed by 2 researchers through a content analysis., Results: Three aspects that affected how patients and family carers coped with PD were identified: features of the clinical practice; family environment, and disease's acceptance. Taking account of these findings, some strategies which could foster these aspects from primary healthcare are suggested in order to improve the adjustment to the disease in patients and family carers., Conclusions: The healthcare in people with PD should have an integral approach that tackle the symptoms control in patients and also deal with psychosocial aspects that influence on the coping with the disease, in patients and family carers., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier España, S.L.U. - Abstract
Aim: To identify the clinical features that predict a favourable response to onabotulinumtoxinA (OnabotA) treatment in patients with refractory migraine., Patients and Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with refractory migraine who underwent at least two pericranial injections of OnabotA between 2008 and 2012. Patients were divided into responders and non-responders. Some clinical features including unilateral location of headache, presence of pericranial muscle tension, type of pain (imploding or exploding), duration of migraine (less than or greater than 10 years) and medication overuse were compared between the two groups., Results: 39 patients were included (35 women) with a mean age of 46 years. 18 patients (46.2%) showed a greater than 50% reduction in the number of headache days/month (responders). When analyzing the different features of migraine, we observed that all were equally prevalent in responders and non-responders (p > 0.05): unilateral location (66.7% vs 66.6% respectively), implosive pain (27.8% vs 38.1%), presence of pericranial muscle tension (33.3% vs 38.1%), duration of migraine more than 10 years (77.8% vs 69.2%) and presence of medication overuse (50% vs 81%)., Conclusion: We failed to identify any clinical feature in our patients with refractory migraine that predicts a favourable response to OnabotA treatment.

- Abstract
Aim: To analyse our experience in the treatment of refractory chronic migraine, episodic frequent refractory migraine (≥10 days/month), with onabotulinumtoxin A (OnabotA)., Patients and Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with refractory migraine who underwent, at least two sessions of OnabotA pericranial injections following the PREEMPT protocol between 2008 and 2012. The efficacy of OnabotA was evaluated comparing the basal situation with 12-16 weeks after the second session. We analysed the subjective improvement of the patients, number of days with headache, preventive and abortive drugs consumption, and adverse effects., Results: Forty-one patients (37 women, 4 male) were identified. 65.8% patients experienced subjective improvement after OnabotA treatment. 36.58% responded (reduction of > 50% in headache days). Differences between days with headache before the first session (24.5 ± 7.3), and 12-16 weeks after the second session (17.4 ± 11.6), as well as the differences between the number of abortive drugs taken before the first session (26.8 ± 23.1) and 12-16 weeks after the second session (16.7 ± 19.3), were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Subgroups analysis showed that all differences were significant, except for the reduction of the number of days with headache in patients with episodic frequent refractory migraine., Conclusion: Our work shows that treatment with OnabotA is safe and useful in patients with episodic and chronic refractory migraine, including those patients with medication overuse headache.
