Doxorubicin (Dox) is an anti–cancer agent used of ovarian, breast, liver, lung cancers and solid tumors such as leukemia and lymphoma treatment. However, since it is an antineoplastic agent with a high toxic effect, it causes toxicity on many organs and tissues in the organism. Spirulina spp. (SP) contains phytopigments such as β–carotene, tocopherols and xanthophylls and is a natural source of vitamin A as well as its anticarcinogenic effect. For these reasons, this study was planned to experimentally reveal the antioxidant and protective effects of SP on Dox–induced reproductive toxicity in female rats. In the study, histopathological evaluation was performed after Hematoxylin–Eosin staining in female rats with Dox toxicity. The distribution of GSK–3β for cell proliferation, HIF–1α for oxidative stress and VEGF for vascularization were evaluated. TUNEL staining was performed to determine apoptosis. It was determined that SP prevented tissue damage on the ovarian tissue of rats with Dox toxicity, and this positive effect was achieved through factors such as oxidative stress (HIF–1α), vascularization (VEGF) and inhibition of cell death (Apoptosis). It has been observed that SP treatment to be applied after chemotherapy is effective in protecting both the developing follicles and the primordial follicle pool.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships between preovulatory follicle (POF) and corpus luteum (CL) diameters, and POF and CL vascular perfusion with progesterone production, ovulation, and pregnancy in Nellore cows subjected to timed artificial insemination (TAI). Nellore cows (n = 201) were subjected to ovulation synchronization and later to ultrasound evaluation of POF and CL at the time of insemination (D0) and seven days later (D7), respectively. Females were divided into three categories according to the POF diameter assessed at the time of insemination: small (SF), medium (MF), and large (LF) follicles. The LF group had a greater number and intensity of pixels in the POF ultrasound exam compared with the SF group. The CL flow intensity and progesterone concentration were also higher in the LF group. The SF group showed lower flow intensity and lower ovulation rate compared with the others. When non-pregnant females were compared to pregnant ones, no difference was observed in any of the analyzed variables. The results show for the first time in Nellore cattle the relationship between the size of ovarian structures and blood flow (quantity and intensity) as well as the ability of the CL to produce progesterone. The intensity of the POF pixels proved to be relevant, demonstrating correlations with the size and flow of the CL, which were not found when evaluating only the number of pixels, thus revealing the importance of evaluating complementary characteristics of the flow.

The following article presents results of the complex research on postulation of immunohistochemical features of the ovaries’ structure in case of fetuses with a gestational term of 21-28 weeks from mothers with HILGT comparing to ones in case of fetuses from mothers with a physiological pregnancy. The materials of the research are: 25 fetuses from mothers with HILGT as well as 25 fetuses from mothers with physiological pregnancy. All fetuses had died antenatally and inranatally, as a result of violation of uteroplacental and umbilical-uterine circulation. Research methods: macroscopic, organometric, histological, immunohistochemical, morphometric, statistical. The organometric method revealed a clear decrease of main indexes of the fetuses’ ovaries from mothers with a complicated pregnancy comparing to ones in case of organs of fetuses from healthy mothers. Morphometric method revealed a clear decrease of a relative volume of cortical substance as well as a clear increase of a relative volume of brain substance in the gonads of fetuses from the main group; as well as it showed a clear decrease of an index of follicular tissue’ relative volume, likewise a clear increase of an index of interstitial component relative volume.The staining by picrofuxin by van Gieson method revealed a massive growth of the connective tissue in all strucutral components of organs of fetuses from mothers with HILGT relatively to gonads of fetuses from healthy mothers. Using of MCAT to main types of collagens allowed to reveal a violation of maturation of main types of collagens in the structure of connective tissue of fetal gonads in the main group. In the follicular component of the fetuses’ ovaries in the main group are appearing mature, cystic-artretic and growing forms of follicles. Immunohistochemical method revealed an increased number of an apoptotically altered eggs in the ovaries of fetuses from mothers with HILGT comparing to one in organs of fetuses from mothers with physiological pregnancy. The peroxidase method revealed an increased endotheline-producing activity of the vascular component as arterial, like a venous type; likewise a clear decrease of the hormone-producing activity in the ovaries of fetuses from mothers with HILGT comparing to such indexes in fetal organs of fetuses from mothers with physiological pregnancy. The complex of changes in the ovaries of fetuses with a 21-28 weeks of gestational term, which was described, was formed under the influence of the chronic hypoxia, prolonged antigenic stimulation as well as hormonal violations in the mother-placenta-fetus system, which is a leading link of the infectious pathology’ pathogenesis. The aforementioned complex of the structural and functional changes in the ovaries of fetuses from mothers with HILGT in a gestational term of 21-28 weeks indicates violations in implementation and formation of the fetal gonads, as well as it could further lead to disorders of the germinal function in the female organism.

In the following article specific hystochemical features of the fetal ovaries’ structure from mothers with the physiological pregnancy are considered. All fetals were divided into subgroups by taking into consideration the term of gestation, as well as main stages of fetal gonads’ formation and laying. Namely: 21-28 weeks, 29-36 weeks, 37-40 weeks. All fetuses had died intranatally, as a result of acute uterine-placental circulation. The course of pregnancy in all cases was psychological, according to appropriate medical documentation. In the aim of reaching the scientific goal the following research methods were used: macroscopic, organometric, histological, histochemichal, morphometric, statistical. The comprehensive study has revealed the following features of the ovaries’ structure, depending on gestational term: weight, length, thickness, width and volume of the ovaries were reaching their minimum levels in case of fetuses with a gestational age of 21-28 weeks, while the maximum one was reached in case of fetuses on 37-42 weeks of gestation. All gonads are represented by cortical and cerebral matter, with the constant ratio despite of different gestational term. According to the growth of pregnancy term the number of germ cells decreases, while the number of apoptotically altered forms oppositely increases. Primarily it is because of the psychological cells’ death during ovarian formation.The follicular component at all stages of gestation is represented by primordial and primary follicles; at the 37-40 weeks though the atretic forms and cystically altered specimens are appearing. Moreover, in accordance with the growth of the pregnancy term, the number of primordial follicles decreases, while oppositely, the number of primary ones increases. The aforementioned changes lead to the decrease in the relative volume of follicular tissue and to the increase of the relative volume of the interstitial component. By the following histochemical methods (Felgen-Rossenbeck reaction, Brache reaction, Schiff-reaction) an increase in the functional activity of the fetal ovaries was revealed, by reaching its maximum point during gestation of the 37-40 weeks. The aforementioned features correspond with gestational terms as well as with stages of the ovarian development of the fetus. That is why they could be used as a control group during leading a research on characteristical features of fetal gonads structure of fetuses from mothers with complicated pregnancies.

The comprehensive study on the fetal ovaries allowed us to disclose main features of the collagen synthesis in different organ’s components relatively to the gestational term of fetus. We have studied the ovaries’ structure in case of fetuses, who died both antenatally and intranatally. The mothers of fetuses, according to the medical documentation, were healthy. As a reason of the fetuses death we can name an acute violation of the utero-placental as well as placental-fetal circulation. According to the specific features of the organs’ development, all fetuses were divided into groups: 21-28 weeks, 29-36 weeks, 37-40 weeks. The research methods: macroscopic, morphometric, histological, immunohistochemical, statistical. We have described a histological structure of the ovaries as well as we have postulated, that this structure corresponds completely with the physiological norm in every term of gestation. By applying the immunohistochemical method we have postulated, that the collagen of the I type prevails in the collagen structure of the connective tissue of fetal organs. It is manifested as an intensive glow. As the same time, the collagen of the III type is manifested as the small foci of moderate intensity. There are two types of collagens in the walls of blood vessels: IV and III ones. Moreover, we can preferably notice the collagen of the IV type. The collagen of the III type, at the same time, is manifested by foci with a low intensity of glow. All specific features of the collagen formation in the structure of the connective tissue, that were described above, are the same with ones which are corresponding with the physiological norm. The histological and immunohistochemical features of the ovaries’ structure, in case of fetuses from the study groups, could be applied as a comparison in a study on the organs’ structure in case of fetuses from mothers with a complicated pregnancy.

Background. Reproduction is important in animal production, and follicle evaluation is a remarkable reproductive aspect by which ovaries can be accurately evaluated since ovarian follicles are the organ's functional units and each contain an oocyte and related somatic cells. Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the abattoir cattle ovaries and follicles for potential in vitro production of embryos. Methodology. Ovaries were collected and categorized based on the presence of corpus luteum (CL; with or without). Thereafter, ovaries were processed and follicles were counted through naked eye estimation as well histologically. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure in SAS. Also, relationships between follicles in both types of ovaries were calculated using Pearson correlations. Results. From a total of sixteen cattle ovaries, 62.5% had absence of CL whereas 37.5% ovaries had CL. Regarding morphometric measurements, ovaries with CL were 48% higher (P < 0.05) in weight than those ovaries without CL. Correlations between length and weight in ovaries without CL were high (r= 0.87) and, diameter and weight in ovaries with CL were low (r= 0.41). Results exposed that the amount of follicles with 2-6 mm diameter were significantly (P < 0.05) higher (61% more) in ovaries without CL compared to those with CL. Primary and secondary follicles presence were higher (P < 0.05) in ovaries without CL (120% more) than in those with CL (89%). Greater (P < 0.05) numbers of normal and lower (P < 0.05) amount of degenerated follicles were found in ovaries without CL. Implications. Overall, our data suggest that ovaries without CL are a potential source for quality follicles and this study provides new insights that may serve as the baseline information to produce high-quality oocyte with potential use for in vitro production of tropical cattle. Conclusions. This study corroborated that CL influences growth and development of the follicles and cell degeneration. As a result, the developmental competence of oocytes and embryo production will be negatively affected by the ovaries with CL. Ovaries without CL will provide quality follicles and cumulus-oocyte complexes.

Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest diseases plaguing women today. Morbidity and mortality is drastically high and unfortunately still growing. In many cases, the medicine is powerless. The very term cancer awakens in us the fear, uncertainty and significantly increases the level of stress. The disease is an element of human life, it is a drama for the patient and his family. For a time, completely changes the man and his subordinates pobytom life in the hospital and the next stages of therapy. The aim of this work is to present the problems associated with the occurrence of ovarian tumors. Presentation of ways of early diagnosis which can significantly increase the survival rate of women suffering. The work shows how serious problem in modern gynecological oncology is constantly ovarian cancer. It is characterized by very high mortality rate among cancers of the female genital.

The aim of this paper was to determine the size of the pre-ovulation follicle in the corpus luteum, and in blood progesterone on the sixth and twelfth days after ovulation, in Holstein, Brown, Swiss and Criollo breeds grazing in Ecuadoran Highlands. The size of the pre-ovulation follicle and corpus luteum, and the blood progesterone levels were determined on days six and twelve, in nine heifers from each breed. Assessment of ovarian structures was made by ultrasound scanning. The concentration of blood progesterone was determined by electrochemiluminescence. The pre-ovulation follicle in Criollo heifers was larger (14.6 ± 0.41 mm) than in Holstein (12.7 ±0.47 mm), and in Brown Swiss (12.7 ± 0.65 mm). The progesterone concentration on days six and twelve after ovulation of Criolla heifers was higher than for Holstein and Brown Swiss (11.0 ± 1.68 ng/ml, and 18.4 ± 2.04 ng/ml, respectively). The linear association values were high and significant (P < 0.05) in the pre-ovulation follicle, corpus luteum and progesterone, in Holstein and Brown Swiss. It was demonstrated that for every additional millimeter above the Criollo mean on the sixth day, 1.67 ng/ml more of progesterone was generated in Criollo heifers (P < 0.05) than in the rest. It was concluded that the Criollo heifers had higher progesterone levels than Holstein and Brown Swiss on the sixth and twelfth days, thus producing better conditions in the uterus, with lower early embryo losses.

Primary angiosarcoma of the breast is an uncommon, aggressive neoplasm with an unknown etiology. In this paper, we present a case of a 28 year woman who initially developed primary angiosarcoma of the breast and ovary, followed twenty months later by metastasis to the axilla. Only a few cases of primary angiosarcomas of the breast have reported metastasis to the ovary. Of these cases, all had ovarian metastasis at presentation or shortly after initial diagnosis. This particular case is unusual, the metastases occurred two years following treatment of the primary tumor. This paper will address possible factors contributing to metastasis.

The objective was to evaluate morphometric characteristics of the ovaries and incidence of corpus luteum and ovarian follicles in empty zebu crossbreed’s cows obtained from slaughterhouses, in the region of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. The average values of length, width and thickness of the rights ovaries (OD) were, respectively, 3.5 cm, 2.3 cm and 1.70 cm. For the left ovary (OE) the measures were: 3.4 cm, 2.0 cm and 1.60 cm. The mean diameter of the follicles found in the OD was 1.1 cm and OE 0.8 cm. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the use of rbST and eCG prior to ultrasound-guided follicular aspiration (OPU) improves oocyte yield and quality in Tabapuã and Holstein heifers. The study was conducted in two phases, 20 days apart, in a change-over design. The dominant follicle was ablated two days (D-2) before two treatments: stimulation (6 Holstein and 8 Tabapuã), 500 mg of rbST (Boostin®) on D0 and 500 IU of eCG (Folligon) on D2; and control (6 Holstein and 8 Tabapuã), in which heifers received injections of the excipient. Heifers were aspirated on D4. Oocytes were subjected to a well established commercial in vitro embryo production protocol (Vitrogen®) and embryos were evaluated seven days after fertilization. There was an effect from the interaction of treatment and breed, so that hormonal stimulation increased antral follicle count (2-8 mm) in Tabapuã (29.9±2.6 to 41.4±2.6), but not in Holstein heifers (14.4±2.6 to 15.5±2.6). Tabapuã heifers had higher mean antral follicle count than Holsteins (35.6±1.8 vs. 15.0±2.1). The number of viable oocytes was not increased by stimulation in Tabapuã (from 4.7±1.0 to 5.2±1.1 in control and simulation, respectively) or in Holstein heifers (1.3±1.9 to 2.0±1.6 in control and simulation, respectively). There was no difference in the percentage of heifers with more than five viable oocytes in the group treated (33 vs 27%). The number of blastocysts was not affected by treatment (1.75 vs. 1.00 in hormonal stimulation and control, respectively). The increase in antral follicle count in the stimulated Tabapuã heifers did not reflect upon oocyte yield. The differential breed response to the hormonal treatment underscores the need for additional tests, especially for the Holstein breed, in order to enhance OPU efficiency.

En el sureste de México A. tropicus es una especie de gran importancia ecológica, económica, cultural y para acuicultura, sin embargo, sus poblaciones silvestres han disminuido a causa de diversas actividades antropogénicas, por lo que se caracterizó el ciclo reproductor de A. tropicus, a partir de los cambios en los elementos germinales y somáticos durante la ovogénesis y la estructura de toda la gónada, información valiosa para el mejor manejo y aprovechamiento de la especie. Mensualmente se capturaron con redes de arrastres, seis hembras sexualmente maduras (N=72), durante un ciclo anual (octubre 2003-septiembre 2004), en poblaciones silvestres de la laguna de Pomposu del municipio de Jalpa de Méndez; Tabasco, México. Las hembras fueron sacrificadas por decapitación y los ovarios se procesaron por métodos histológicos convencionales, se determinó el diámetro entre 10-20 ovocitos en los diferentes estadios de desarrollo al azar. Se determinó mensualmente el índice gonadosomático (IGS), volumen gonadal (gV) y el diámetro del folículo (fD). Además, se identificaron ocho estadios de desarrollo de la ovogénesis: I: cromatina nucléolo, II: perinucléolo temprano, III: perinucléolo avanzado, IV: alvéolos corticales, V: vitelogénesis temprana, VI: vitelogénesis media, VII: vitelogénesis avanzada, VIII: maduración final. El ciclo reproductor la constituye cuatro clases: I.-Proliferativa, II.-Maduración inicial, III.-Maduración tardía, IV.-Regresión-proliferación. El análisis de la información obtenida de los valores encontrados del IGS, gV, fD, estadios de la ovogénesis y clases reproductivas, indican que en diciembre se reinicia el crecimiento de los folículos (previtelogenesis), de mar-zo-julio se presenta la captación del vitelo (vitelogenesis) y en agosto-noviembre se presenta la máxima actividad reproductora, al contrastar este patrón con los factores ambientales (temperatura, precipitación) se sugiere que estos pueden funcionar como un gatillo ambiental, en el desarrollo de la ovogénesis y el desove.In Southeast Mexico, A. tropicus is a species with great ecological, economic, cultural and aquaculture value, however wild populations have diminished due to diverse anthropological causes. The objective of this study was to characterize the reproductive cycle of A. tropicus, with a description of complete gonad structure and the changes in germinal and somatic elements during oogenesis, for better management and use of this species. Six sexually mature females (N=72) were captured monthly with drag nets during one year cycle (October 2003-October 2004) in wild populations of Pomposu lagoon, municipality of Jalpa de Mendez, Tabasco, Mexico. Females were sacrificed by decapitation and the ovaries were processed by standard histological methods; the diameter of 10-20 oocytes taken at random was determined in different stages of development. Gonadosmatic index (GSI), gonadal volume (gV) and follicule diameter (fD) were determined monthly. Among results we could determine eight oogenesis developmental stages: I: chromatin nucleolus stage, II: early perinucleolus stage, III: mid perinucleolus stage, IV: advanced perinucleolus stage, V: early vitellogenesis stage, VI: mid vitellogenesis stage, VII) advanced vitellogenesis stage and VIII: final maturation stage. The reproductive cycle could be divided in four phases: I: proliferative phase, II: initial maturation phase, III: late maturation phase, IV: regressing phase. Analysis of the data obtained from the IGS, gV and fD values, oogenesis stages and reproductive phases, indicate that in December previtellogenesis phase restarts, from March through July yolk deposition (vitellogenesis) occurs, and from August to November the maximum reproductive activity takes place. Contrasting this pattern with local environmental factors such as temperature and precipitation, we suggested that these may serve as an environmental activator in the development of oogenesis and spawning of this species. The sustainability and production of collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) has been studied in the last few years; however, further information on its reproduction is necessary for breeding systems success. Understanding folliculogenesis aspects will contribute to effective reproductive biotechniques, which are useful in the preservation and production of wildlife. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ovarian folliculogenesis in collared peccary. Ovaries from six adult females of collared peccary were obtained through ovariectomy and analyzed. These were fixed in aqueous Bouin’s solution and sectioned into 7μm slices, stained with hematoxilin-eosin and analyzed by light microscopy. The number of pre-antral and antral follicles per ovary was estimated using the Fractionator Method. The follicles, oocytes and oocyte nuclei were measured using an ocular micrometer. Results showed that the length, width, thickness, weight, and the gross anatomy of the right and left ovaries were not significantly different. Presentación del caso: paciente de 48 años de edad con historia de ooforectomía izquierda hace 34 años por tumor ovárico benigno, consulta al Hospital Universitario del Caribe, centro de referencia del departamento de Bolívar, por presentar dolor en hipocondrio izquierdo. Examen físico: masa abdominal confirmada mediante ultrasonido y tomografía computarizada abdominal. Se encontró masa retroperitoneal de 15,5 x 10,5 x 7 cm, en la laparotomía exploratoria, la cual se resecó. El análisis microscópico reveló tejido tiroideo constituido por folículos con estructura típica, lo cual indicó una estrumosis peritoneal. Materiales y métodos: se realizó una revisión bibliográfica en cinco bases de datos (Medline, Ebsco, PubMed, Science Direct y Cochrane Reviews), utilizando como encabezados de búsqueda [Título/Resumen]: peritoneal struma, peritoneal strumosis, struma ovarii. Se incluyeron 15 citas bibliográficas. Conclusiones: la estrumosis peritoneal es una lesión poco frecuente, asociada al teratoma quístico maduro del ovario, cuyo diagnóstico preoperatorio es difícil. Este es un nuevo caso publicado en la literatura mundial.Objective: a case of peritoneal strumosis is presented for making a review of the literature published about these histological tumors and their clinical characteristics. Case presentation: a 48-year-old patient, having a history of left side oophorectomy 34 beforehand due to a benign ovarian tumor, consulted at the Caribe Teaching Hospital (a reference centre for the Bolívar department) as she had pain in the left hypochondrium. Physical exam: abdominal mass confirmed by ultrasound and abdominal computerized tomography. A 15.5 x 10.5 x 7 cm retroperitoneal mass was found during exploratory laparotomy which was removed. Microscope analysis revealed thyroid tissue consisting of follicles having typical structure, constituting a peritoneal strumosis. Materials and methods: a literature review was made of five databases (Medline, Emsco, PubMed, Science Direct and Cochrane Reviews), using search keywords [Title/Summary]: “peritoneal struma”, “peritoneal strumosis” ad “struma ovarii”; 15 bibliographical citations were included. Conclusions: peritoneal strumosis is an infrequently occurring lesion which is associated with mature cystic teratoma of the ovary, whose pre-operation diagnosis is difficult. This is a new case published in the worldwide literature.

Antecedentes: La torsión anexial es una complicación frecuente en ginecología que motiva una cirugía de urgencia y muchas veces conlleva la anexectomía como tratamiento basado en la impresión visual cirujano. Objetivo: Evaluar la contabilidad de la impresión visual del cirujano para la toma de decisiones. Método: Se estudiaron las torsiones anexiales operadas entre enero de 2006 y julio de 2009. Se revisaron las placas de los casos sometidos a anexectomía y se determinó la presencia de compromiso vascular irreversible. Se correlacionó la impresión visual del cirujano con la del patólogo usando la biopsia como estándar dorado. Resultados: En el período de estudio se operaron 51 pacientes. La edad promedio fue 35,5 ± 2 años (rango: 8-80 años). El 72,6% de los casos fue abordado por laparoscopia y en 60,7% de los casos se realizó anexectomía. En 38,7% de los casos sometidos a anexectomía se demostró en la biopsia un infarto hemorrágico masivo. A mayor intervalo de tiempo entre diagnóstico y cirugía, mayor fue la probabilidad de compromiso vascular (regresión logística, pBackground: Adnexal torsion constitutes one of the major surgical emergencies in gynecology commonly leading to adnexal removal based on visual assessment of vascular damage. Aims: The goal of present study is to establish the accuracy of the surgeon's visual impression in correctly doing the decision-making. Methods: All cases of adnexal torsion undergoing surgery between January 2006 and July 2009 were recruited. A pathological review was conducted in all cases undergoing adnexal removal to assess the presence of irreversible vascular damage. A correlation was done between pathologist and surgeon assessment using pathological report as gold standard. Results: During the period of study a total of 51 patients were operated. The average age was 35.5 ± 2 years (range: 8-80 years). The 72.6% of cases was approached by laparoscopy and in 60.7% of cases adnexal removal was done. In 38.7% of those cases treated with adnexal removal a massive ischemic necrosis or complete infarction was demonstrated at biopsy. En este estudio se analiza la anatomía, estructura y desarrollo de los frutos en 12 especies de Piriqueta y 30 especies de Turnera; con el objetivo de identificar la estructura involucrada en la dehiscencia y verificar la existencia de patrones en la organización del fruto entre las especies analizadas. El ovario es sincárpico, tricarpelar, unilocular con placentación parietal, presentando la misma estructura en todas las especies. Ambas epidermis carpelares son uniestratificadas y tienen estomas, el mesófilo es parenquimático con 3 haces dorsales y 3 marginales. Durante el desarrollo del fruto, la epidermis externa forma un epicarpo papiloso en las especies de Piriqueta. El mesocarpio deriva de los estratos medios del ovario, formando un estrato mecánico de braquiesclereidas. Estas esclereidas pueden organizarse como un cilindro continuo determinando frutos de superficie lisa o agruparse en nidos, unidos o no, determinando así frutos granulares, verrugosos, o tuberculados. Las cápsulas son loculicidas, con línea de dehiscencia formada por macroesclereidas dispuestas longitudinalmente en el fruto, paralelas al haz carpelar dorsal. Se concluye que los diferentes tipos de pericarpio son un rasgo post-fecundación, dado que la estructura del ovario es exactamente la misma en todas las especies analizadas. Se analiza la anatomía del fruto en relación al esquema taxonómico actualizado.The aims of this work were to describe the morphology, anatomy and development of the fruits of 12 species of Piriqueta and 30 species of Turnera; to identify the structures related to the process of dehiscence of the capsule; and to verify the occurrence of standards carpological structure between the studied species. The ovary is 3-carpellar, syncarpous, unilocular with parietal placentation and has the same anatomical structure in all studied species. The outer and inner epidermises are single-layered with stomata; the ovarian mesophyll is composed by parenchyma, with three dorsal and three marginal vascular bundles. During the fruit development, the external epidermis develops a papillose epicarp in Piriqueta species. The mesocarp develops from the cells of the middle zone of the carpel. The mechanic stratum is formed by brachysclereids, developing from cells of the outer, median or inner layers of the ovarian mesophyll. Two main distributional patterns can be recognised: a mechanic stratum formed by continuous cylinder or clusters of brachysclereids. The first type determines smooth fruits, and the last form granular, verrucose, or tuberculate fruits. The capsules are loculicidal, with dehiscence lines characterized by the presence of macrosclereids, longitudinally dispose at the inner side of the carpellar dorsal bundle. We conclude that different types of pericarp are a post-fertilization feature, because the structure of the ovary is exactly the same in all species. We analyze the anatomy of the fruit in relation to the current taxonomic arrangement.

Objetives: The goal of this article was to evaluate the association between flaxseed intake during lactation and its effects on the reproductive indexes in female offspring at infancy, puberty and adult age. Material and methods: Two groups were evaluated, an experimental group (FG, n = 24) which consumed a flaxseed based diet and a control group (CG, n = 26) which had access to a casein based diet. Both of them were fed exclusively with the mentioned diets during all lactation and after weaning the pups received a standard laboratory diet until sacrifice (at weaning, in the moment of vaginal opening or at 90 days old). It was analyzed the puberty onset, estrous cycle, serum estradiol and albumin concentrations, body weight, uterine and ovarian weights. Results: Estradiol and albumin serum concentrations, body weight, uterine and ovarian relative weights were similar in FG and CG at weaning, at vaginal opening and at 90 days old. There was not significant difference in puberty onset between FG and CG, both had similar body weight at vaginal opening. The length of estrous cycle was similar for both groups. There was no significant difference concerning number of females with irregular estrous cycle, only 2 females had irregular cycle in FG and 3 in the CG. None of the females was acyclic. Conclusion: Flaxseed intake during lactation did not interfere with sexual maturation and reproductive organs development, suggesting that its consumption during this period is safe for sexual development of female offspring.Objetivos: el propósito de este artículo era evaluar la asociación entre la ingestión de hierba del chancho durante la lactancia y sus efectos sobre los índices de reproducción en las hijas en la lactancia, pubertad y edad adulta. Material y métodos: se evaluaron dos grupos, uno experimental (FG, n = 24) que consumía una dieta basada en la hierba del chancho y un grupo control (CG, n = 26) que consumía una dieta basada en caseína. Ambos grupos fueron alimentados exclusivamente con las dietas mencionadas durante toda la lactancia y tras el destete los cachorros recibieron una dieta estándar de laboratorio hasta su sacrificio (en el destete, en el momento de la apertura vaginal o hasta la edad de 90 días.) Se analizó el inicio de la pubertad, el ciclo estrogénico, el estradiol sérico y las concentraciones de albúmina, el peso corporal, y los pesos del útero y los ovarios. Resultados: las concentraciones séricas de estradiol y albúmina, el peso corporal y los pesos relativos del útero y los ovarios fueron similares entre FG y CG en el destete, en el momento de la apertura vaginal y a los 90 días de vida. No hubo una diferencias significativas en el inicio de la pubertad entre FG y CG, y ambos grupos mostraron un peso corporal similar en el momento de la apertura vaginal. La duración del ciclo estrogénico fue similar en ambos grupos. No hubo una diferencia significativa con respecto al número de hembras con ciclos estrogénicos irregulares; sólo 2 hembras tuvieron un ciclo irregular en el FG y 3 en el CG. Ninguna hembra se quedó sin ciclo. Conclusión: el consumo de hierba del chancho durante la lactancia no interfirió con la maduración sexual ni el desarrollo de los órganos reproductores, lo que sugiere que su consumo durante este periodo es seguro para el desarrollo sexual de los descendientes femeninos

Foram avaliados métodos alternativos de restrição alimentar qualitativa em comparação à técnica convencional de muda forçada. Utilizaram-se 480 galinhas Babcock de 78 semanas distribuídas em três níveis de restrição alimentar (100, 75 e 50%) e três percentuais de redução de peso corporal (15, 20 e 25%), cada um com cinco repetições de 32 aves. Quando as aves atingiram o percentual de redução de peso corporal, determinaram-se o volume globular, os percentuais de ovário, oviduto, moela, intestino e gordura abdominal e o comprimento de oviduto. A partir do 28º dia e durante cinco períodos de 28 dias, observaram-se as características quantitativas e qualitativas de produção pós-muda. O maior período de restrição foi observado no nível de 50% e proporcionou menores percentuais de gordura abdominal (0,66%), ovário (0,60%), oviduto (0,77%) e comprimento de oviduto (32 cm). O percentual de produção de ovos foi maior no primeiro período para as aves submetidas aos métodos de 75 e 100% de restrição com 15 e 20% de redução de peso, respectivamente. Entretanto, para as aves com 50% de restrição e 25% de redução de peso, as maiores produções (86,80 e 83,20%) ocorreram no quarto e quinto períodos. A restrição alimentar qualitativa, em 50% da dieta com ração e casca de arroz, por ser menos agressiva, proporciona melhores condições de bem-estar e facilita o manejo da granja.Alternative methods were assessed of qualitative feed restriction compared to the conventional forced molt technique. Four hundred and eighty Babcock hens were used distributed in three levels of feed restriction (100, 75 and 50%) and three body weight reduction percentages (15, 20 and 25%), with five replications of 32 hens. When the birds reached the body weight reduction percentage the packed cell volume, percentages of ovary, oviduct, gizzard, intestine, abdominal fat and oviduct length were determined. Starting on day 28 and during five 28-day periods the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of production after forced molt were measured. The largest restriction period occurred at 50% of restriction that resulted in the smallest percentages of abdominal fat (0.66%), ovary (0.60%), oviduct (0.77%) and oviduct length (32 cm). The egg production percentage was higher in the first period, for the 75 and 100% restriction methods with up to 15 and 20% body weight reduction, respectively. However, for the birds with 50% restriction and 25% body weight reduction, the highest productions (86.80 and 83.20%) occurred in the 4th and 5th periods. Qualitative feed restriction at 50% of the diet with feed and rice hulls, because it was less aggressive, resulted in better welfare conditions and facilitated farm management.

Antecedentes: El tumor de células de la granulosa (TCG) ovárico es considerado una neoplasia de la cuerda sexual, de baja frecuencia, en su mayoría debuta en etapas tempranas, con patrón de crecimiento lento y puede presentar metástasis tardías. Objetivo: Presentar un caso clínico de metástasis pulmonares de TCG ovárico 26 años después del diagnóstico. Caso clínico: Mujer de 70 años, con antecedentes de TCG ovárico diagnosticado en 1976, tratado con histerectomía, salpingooforectomía bilateral y quimioterapia triasociada. En buenas condiciones generales hasta el 2002, detectándose múltiples nodulos tumorales pulmonares bilaterales correspondientes a metástasis de TCG. Recibió quimioterapia con platino y etopó-sido. Actualmente la paciente se encuentra viva, con enfermedad tumoral pulmonar de lento crecimiento. Conclusión: A lo mejor de nuestro conocimiento, se trata del tercer caso a nivel mundial de un TCG ovárico con metástasis pulmonares tardías, 26 años posdiagnóstico del tumor primario. Se señala el curso clínico de lenta evolución de esta neoplasia y la relevancia de los controles a largo plazo incluyendo niveles de estradiol o inhibina.Background: Granulosa cell tumor of the ovary (GCT) of the ovary is a sex cord related tumor. It is a low frequency neoplasm with low clinical progression but it may show late metastases. Objective: To present a 70 year old female with a GCT of the ovary with multiple pulmonary metastases after 26 years from the initial diagnosis of the primary tumor. Clinic case: The patient had an ovarian GCT diagnosed by histology in 1976 and underwent hysterectomy, bilateral salpingoophorectomy and chemotherapy. The clinical course was satisfactory until 2002 when she presented with respiratory symptoms and images showing multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules that were histologically confirmed to be GCT metastases. The patient underwent chemotherapy with platinum and ethoposide. Actually the patient is alive with metastatic disease. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the third case in medical literature of a GCT of the ovary with late pulmonary metastases 26 years after the initial diagnosis. This case illustrates the protracted clinical course of the neoplasm and the importance of the long term follow up including levels of estradiol and inhibin.

The complete process of oogenesis was divided in five stages: oogonium and folliculogenesis, primary growth, cortical alveoli and lipid inclusions, vitellogenesis and maturation. The presence of big filaments, which appear at the end of primary growth, induces some common follicular adaptation. During primary growth, abundant ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria are grouped in the cytoplasm. At the end of this stage, the Z1 layer of the chorion is developed, while microvilli start to be evident as well. In the cortical alveoli and lipid droplets phase, intense PAS positive vesicles, some of them containing nucleoid material, are observed in the peripheral cytoplasm and the lipid droplets take a more central position. In vitellogenesis, the proteic yolk accumulates in a centripetal way while the chorion is completely formed. In maturation, the germinal vesicle migrates to the animal pole, meiosis is restored, and there is nuclear breakdown. En el presente trabajo reportamos las características histológicas y ultraestructurales del ovocito de Chirostoma hulmboldtianum. El ovario es de tipo asincrónico, por ende, la mayoría de las fases del desarrollo del ovocito pueden ser encontradas en el mismo ovario. El desarrollo del ovocito fue dividido en cinco etapas: ovo-gonia y foliculogénesis, crecimiento primario del ovocito, inclusiones lipídicas y gránulos corticales, vitelogénesis y maduración. La presencia de grandes filamentos que aparecen al final de la etapa de crecimiento primario, inducen adaptaciones foliculares. Durante el crecimiento primario, en el citoplasma se encuentran abundantes ribosomas, retículo endoplásmico rugoso y agrupamientos de mitocondrias. Al final de esta etapa, inicia el desarrollo de la capa Z1 del corion, comenzando a ser evidentes las microvellosidades del ovocito. Durante la etapa de inclusiones lipídicas y gránulos corticales, vesículas PAS positivas, algunas de ellas con material nucleoide, se ubican en la periferia del ovocito, mientras que las que contienen material graso toman una posición más central en la célula. Durante la vitelogénesis se presenta una acumulación de vitelo protéico en un sentido centrípeto; durante esta etapa, el corion está completamente formado. En la maduración, la vesicular germinal migra hacia el polo animal, se reinicia la meiosis y se rompe la envoltura nuclear. El ovocito incrementa su tamaño y en el citoplasma se pueden observar algunas gotas de grasa y el vitelo se presenta como una gran masa acuosa. En el exterior, los filamentos rodean completamente al ovocito.

Oocytes in cattle are formed during embryogenesis and develop within individual follicles in the cortex of the ovary. Dormant primordial follicles become active and undergo progressive development at regular intervals commencing during the late fetal stage and continuing throughout adulthood. Once activated, follicles and oocytes in a cohort either grow to maturation and ovulation or undergo atresia, ultimately depleting the ovaries of germ cells. It takes an estimated 100 days for a follicle and its oocyte to reach the mature ovulatory stage. Within an individual, number of follicles in one ovary is similar to number in the other ovary; however, there are large differences among individuals in total number of follicles present in both ovaries. In follicles that are recruited into the preovulatory pool, the fluid filled antrum enlarges and growth can be monitored by ultrasonography. Preovulatory follicles grow in waves rather than in a continuous stream, and number of follicles detected in a wave is related positively to number of microscopic follicles populating the ovarian cortex. Number of follicles in a wave is highly repeatable and the estimated heritability of number of follicles in heifers is approximately 0.35. Monitoring preovulatory follicle numbers by ultrasonography can be used to identify females that produce more embryos following superovulation or more natural twin births. Number of follicles in a wave can be influenced by energy balance and exogenous hormones, and quality of oocytes within those follicles can be influenced environmental factors, hormones and vitamins. The potential exists to increase genetic progress through repeatedly harvesting oocytes from preovulatory follicles of genetically superior females.

Background: Currently, epithelial ovarian cancer is diagnosed in advanced stages (EC IIIC) in 75-80% of cases worldwide. In this group of patients treatment with neoadjuvant chemotherapy is started, followed by interval cytoreduction of residual disease and even require peritonectomy with application of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)., Objective: To identify the overall survival and progression-free survival associated with peritonectomy, in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis secondary to ovarian cancer treated in the oncology gynecology service from January 2009 to January 2019 at the UMAE Hospital de Oncología Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI., Material and Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study, information was obtained from the clinical file of patients treated with peritonectomy with the use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in the gynecological oncology service from January 2009 to January 2019 at the UMAE Hospital de Oncología Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI., Results: Information was obtained from a total of 36 patients (n=100%), 36.1% received intraperitoneal chemotherapy and 63.8% underwent cytoreduction without the application of intraoperative chemotherapy. The most frequently used drug was cisplatin followed by mitomycin. There was no statistical significance when comparing both groups, however there was a trend in favor of the use of intraoperative chemotherapy by obtaining a greater number of months in terms of overall survival., Conclusion: Peritonectomy with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is an option in selected patients with advanced stage ovarian cancer in primary and recurrent surgery, as well as in patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer., (Licencia CC 4.0 (BY-NC-ND) © 2023 Revista Médica del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.)

OBJETIVO: Conhecer a paridade e desenvolvimento ovariano da espécie Anopheles cruzii, durante os períodos estacionais. MÉTODOS: As capturas foram realizadas quinzenalmente, no período matutino, de abril/2004 a abril/2005, no Parque Estadual do Palmito, município de Paranaguá litoral do Estado do Paraná. Mosquitos adultos foram capturados usando a técnica pouso homem. As dissecções foram feitas utilizando-se a técnica de Detinova e de Polovodova e a avaliação do desenvolvimento folicular, segundo os critérios de Christophers e Mer. RESULTADOS: Foram dissecadas 208 fêmeas de Anopheles cruzii. A maioria das fêmeas dissecadas nas estações eram nulíparas. Sendo que 14,4% eram nulíparas com folículo além do estádio II de Christophers & Mer, o que evidencia o exercício da hematofagia previamente à primeira oviposição. Observou-se que as populações de Anopheles cruzii são constituídas de indivíduos jovens, talvez em razão da alta mortalidade de fêmeas paridas. CONCLUSÕES: A provável discordância gonotrófica das fêmeas dissecadas é importante do ponto de vista epidemiológico, considerando que a fêmea pode procurar mais de um hospedeiro para completar a maturação dos seus ovos.OBJECTIVE: To determine the parity and ovarian development of Anopheles cruzii species during the seasons. METHODS: Collections were carried out fortnightly in the morning in the Palmito State Park in the municipality of Paranaguá, Southern Brazil, between April 2004 and April 2005. Adult mosquitoes were captured using human landing rate. Dissections were performed using Detinova's and Polovodova's methods and follicular development was assessed following Christophers and Mer's criteria. RESULTS: A total of 208 specimens of Anopheles cruzii were dissected. Most females dissected were nulliparous in the seasons; 14.4% of them were found to be nulliparous above Christophers and Mer's stage II, which shows previous blood meal prior to the first oviposition. It was observed that Anopheles cruzii populations comprised young mosquitoes, probably due to high mortality among parous females. CONCLUSIONS: The likely gonotrophic discordance is epidemiologically relevant because female mosquitoes can search for more than one host to complete the maturation of their eggs.

OBJETIVO: Identificar o estado de paridade em fêmeas de Ochlerotatus scapularis de campo e obtidas em condições de laboratório. MÉTODOS: Para obtenção das fêmeas de campo, foram realizadas coletas quinzenais no Vale do Ribeira utilizando-se a técnica da aspiração manual, de abril de 2003 a março de 2004. Em laboratório, 100 fêmeas (F1) de Ochlerotatus scapularis foram mantidas e observadas individualmente anotando-se o número de repastos realizados, duração do ciclo gonotrófico, tempo de sobrevivência e número de ovos colocados. A observação do estado de paridade e desenvolvimento ovariano foi feita pela dissecção dos ovários de 90 fêmeas por coleta, e de todas as fêmeas mantidas em laboratório. RESULTADOS: Das 100 fêmeas mantidas em laboratório e dissecadas, o diagnóstico de condição de paridade conferiu com os resultados constatados em 55% dos casos, sendo subestimados em 37% e superestimados em 2%. Ainda em laboratório, de 106 ciclos gonotróficos completados, cerca de 55% das fêmeas necessitaram de mais de um repasto sangüíneo antes de ovipor. A sobrevivência observada em laboratório foi de até 26 dias para a espécie. Foram dissecadas 1.180 fêmeas de Ochlerotatus scapularis do campo: 418 (35,4%) foram consideradas nulíparas, 655 (55,5%) uníparas, 46 (3,9%) como bíparas e 61 (5,2%) não puderam ser avaliadas. Noventa fêmeas apresentavam-se na fase III-V de Christophers e Mer. CONCLUSÕES: Pode-se confirmar a hipótese de discordância gonotrófica, com base nas observações de fêmeas de Ochlerotatus scapularis no campo e laboratório.OBJECTIVE: To identify the parity status of Ochlerotatus scapularis females in laboratory and field conditions. METHODS: Field collections were carried out fortnightly using a hand-held aspirator in Vale do Ribeira, Southeastern Brazil, from April 2003 to March 2004. In laboratory, 100 Ochlerotatus scapularis F1 females were obtained and followed up individually, reporting the number of blood meals, the length of gonotrophic cycle, survival and number of eggs laid. The parity status and ovarian development were observed through ovarian dissection of 90 field females for each collection and all females reared in laboratory. RESULTS: The parity status diagnoses of the 100 females reared in laboratory and dissected agreed with 55% of the oviposition data, and it was underestimated in 37% and overestimated in 2%. Also in the laboratory, 106 gonotrophic cycles were completed, around 55% of females needed more than one blood meal before laying eggs. In laboratory conditions the species survival was 26 days. A total of 1,180 field females of Ochlerotatus scapularis were dissected: 418 (35.4%) nulliparous, 655 (55.5%) uniparous, 46 (3.9%) biparous and 61 (5.2%) could not be evaluated. Ninety field females were found in Christophers and Mer's phase III-V. CONCLUSIONS: The gonotrophic discordance hypothesis could be confirmed based on field and laboratory observations of Ochlerotarus scapularis females.

Se presenta un caso de teratoma quístico maduro de ovario que contiene numerosas esférulas flotantes en el quiste. Se trataba de quiste de ovario gigante en una paciente en edad fértil. Las imágenes ecográficas y de la resonancia magnética destacan por su extraordinaria rareza y se piensa que son patognomónicas de teratoma quístico. The present study aimed to obtain quanti-qualitative data about the follicular ovarian population in Cebus apella females. Seven ovaries were obtained from 4 C. apella adult females. The ovaries were subjected to light microscopy. The number of preantral and antral follicles for each ovary was estimated using the Fractionator method. The preantral follicles were classified into primordial, transitional, primary and secondary follicles. Antral follicles were those that presented an antral cavity. All counted follicles were classified as normal or degenerated. The diameter of the follicles, oocytes and their nuclei were determined to accompany the follicular development. All results were represented as mean ± SE. The number of preantral follicles was 56,938 ± 21,888 and 49,133 ± 26,896 for the right and left ovaries, respectively. The percentage of normal follicles was 80 ± 4.95%. The follicular diameter ranged from 22 ± 0.5 µm to 61.2 ± 4.0 µm. Regarding the antral follicles, the number of normal and degenerate follicles per ovary were 60.0 ± 19.0 and 3 ± 1.8 follicles, respectively. The antral follicular diameter was 514.4 + 56.6 µm. In conclusion, the information obtained in this study can be used as a parameter for subsequent in vivo or in vitro studies about folliculogenesis in non-human neotropical primates of the C. apella species.O objetivo do presente trabalho foi obter dados quantitativos e qualitativos da população folicular ovariana de fêmeas de Cebus apella. Foram obtidos 7 ovários de 4 fêmeas adultas de C. apella através de ovariectomia. Os ovários foram submetidos à preparação para histologia ótica de rotina. O número de folículos pré-antrais e antrais por ovário foi estimado utilizando o Método Fracionador. Os folículos pré-antrais foram classificados em primordial, transição, primário e secundário. Foram considerados folículos antrais todos aqueles que apresentavam uma cavidade antral. Todos os folículos contados foram classificados em normais ou degenerados. Com o intuito de acompanhar o desenvolvimento folicular, os diâmetros médios folicular, oocitário e do núcleo do oócito foram determinados. Todos os resultados foram apresentados em Média ± Erro Padrão. A população média de folículos pré-antrais foi de 56.938 ± 21.888 e 49.133 ± 26.896 para os ovários direito e esquerdo, respectivamente. A percentagem de folículos pré-antrais estimados normais foi de 80,00 ± 4,95 %. O diâmetro médio folicular variou de 22,0 ± 0,5 µm a 61,2 ± 4,0 µm. No tocante aos folículos antrais, a população média de folículos normais e degenerados por ovário foi de 60,0 ± 19,0 e 3 ± 1,8 folículos, respectivamente. O diâmetro médio folicular foi de 514,4 ± 56,6 µm. Para concluir, as informações obtidas neste trabalho poderão servir como parâmetro para posteriores estudos in vivo ou in vitro da foliculogênese de primatas não-humanos neotropicais da espécie C. apella.

En el aparato reproductor femenino se expresan diferentes conexinas (Cxs), proteínas que forman canales de uniones en hendidura (CUH) entre células en contacto, permitiendo la coordinación de respuestas metabólicas y/o eléctricas de grupos celulares. Los CUH jugarían un papel relevante en el desarrollo de las células de la granulosa, ya que permiten la comunicación heteróloga entre el ovocito y las células del cúmulo manteniendo la detención meiótica. En la trompa de Falopio, los CUH coordinarían el batido ciliar del epitelio y la contracción muscular, facilitando el desplazamiento de los gametos y del embrión. En el útero, los CUH conectan a las células miometriales y también a las endometriales. El aumento de CUH durante el preparto permitiría la contracción uterina coordinada facilitando el trabajo de parto al término del embarazo. La expresión de las Cxs es regulada por hormonas, lo que explicaría el perfil de CUH presentes en los diversos tipos celulares del tracto genital en diferentes estadios fisiológicos del sistema reproductorSeveral connexins, protein subunits that constitute gap junction channels (GJC), are expressed in the female reproductive tract allowing coordination of metabolic and/or electrical responses. The GJC could play relevant roles in the development of granulosa cells, since they permit heterologous oocyte-cumulus cell communication maintaining the meiotic arrest. In the Fallopian tube, GJC would coordinate the epithelial ciliary beat and muscle contraction, favoring the transport of gametes and embryos. In the uterus, GJC connect myometrial, as well as, endometrial cells. The increase in intercellular communication via GJC before labor would allow coordinated uterine contraction, favoring labor at term pregnancy. The expression of connexins is hormonally regulated and seems to explain the pattern of GJC expression in different cell types of the reproductive system at different physiological stages

The present paper concerns the morphological features of ovaries in 33 species of bees with different social behavior patterns. The ovaries of bees were examined under light microscope. They are polytrophic-meroistic ovaries formed for an anterior germarium and a basal vitellarium. The germarium houses the germ cells and in the vitellarium there are follicles arranged linearly. In general the follicle is constituted by a nutritive chamber (a cluster of nurse cells) and an oocyte chamber, both covered by a single epithelial layer of follicular cells. The number of ovarioles per ovary and the number of mature oocyte per ovary were analyzed. Measurements of ovariole length, oocyte size, oocyte width, follicular epithelial height and the intertegular distance were made to support the comparative study. Statistical analysis showed that representatives of Meliponini and Apini have the largest ovaries. On the other hand, in solitary bees were found the bigger oocytes. Furthermore, our results suggest that there is a tendency for increase in ovary size and ovariole number, with increasing level of sociality.A morfologia do ovário em 33 espécies de abelhas apresentando diferentes graus de sociabilidade foi estudada. Todas as espécies apresentaram ovário do tipo meroístico politrófico formado por um germário anterior e um vitelário basal. No germário estão localizadas as células germinativas e o vitelário apresenta folículos arranjados linearmente. Cada folículo é constituído pela câmara nutridora e pela câmara ovocítica, ambas revestidas por uma camada única de células foliculares. O número de ovaríolos/ovário e de ovócitos maduros/ovário, o comprimento dos ovaríolos, o tamanho e a largura dos ovócitos, a altura do epitélio folicular e a distância intertegular foram analisadas, mostrando que os representantes das tribos altamente eussociais Meliponini e Apini têm os maiores ovários, enquanto as abelhas solitárias apresentam maiores ovócitos. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que há uma tendência para o aumento no tamanho do ovário e número de ovaríolos conforme há um aumento no nível de sociabilidade das abelhas.

OBJETIVOS: Estudar a sobrevivência de populações de Aedes albopictus de ambientes rural e urbano, em diferentes condições de alimentação, e analisar sua idade fisiológica e a história reprodutiva. MÉTODOS: Foram coletadas larvas de Ae. albopictus no Vale do Paraíba (localidade urbana), e no Vale do Ribeira (localidade rural), Estado de São Paulo. As fêmeas que emergiram foram alimentadas com açúcar ou com sangue e observadas diariamente anotando a data da morte de cada uma e outras variáveis relacionadas com a reprodução. Os ovários foram dissecados seguindo a técnica de Polovodova, e a avaliação do desenvolvimento folicular segundo Christophers e Mer. Foram construídas tábuas de vida e analisadas estatísticamente as taxas de sobrevida. Para análise dos dados foi utilizado o Stata 7.0. RESULTADOS: Foi observada discordância gonotrófica nas duas populações de Ae. albopictus. As fêmeas oníparas desenvolveram sacos terminais. As nulíparas apresentaram ovários normais e em alguns casos foram observadas dilatações. As fêmeas alimentadas com açúcar apresentaram maiores taxas de sobrevida. Não foi detectada diferença estatística na taxa de sobrevida entre as duas populações avaliadas. CONCLUSÕES: A idade fisiológica e o estado de paridade de Ae. albopictus não foram definidas pela análise dos ovaríolos porque estes apresentaram sacos terminais em vez de dilatações. O tipo de alimento ingerido influenciou na sobrevivência das fêmeas de Ae. albopictus.OBJECTIVES: To study the longevity of Ae. albopictus populations in rural and urban areas in two different feeding conditions and to assess their physiological age and reproductive history. METHODS: Ae. albopictus larvae were collected in the Paraíba Valley, (urban area) and Ribeira Valley (rural area), São Paulo State, Brazil. In the laboratory, females were fed with sugar or blood and monitored daily. The day of death of each mosquito and other reproduction related characteristics were registered. Ovaries were dissected using Polovodova techniques and follicular development was examined according Christophers and Mer. Life tables were created and statistics analysis was performed for survival rates. Data analysis was carried out using Stata 7.0. RESULTS: Gonotrophic discordance was seen in both populations. Parous females developed terminal sacs. Nulliparous females had normal ovaries and in some cases dilatations were seen. Females fed with sugar showed higher survival rates. Statistical difference in survival rates was not observed in the populations of both areas. CONCLUSIONS: Parity status and physiological age of Ae. albopictus were not described using ovarioles analysis because they formed terminal sacs instead of dilations. Longevity of Ae. albopictus females was influenced by the food provided.

O objetivo foi avaliar a densidade mineral óssea de mulheres na pós-menopausa, com o antecedente de histerectomia com conservação ovariana bilateral, realizada no menacme, comparadas a um grupo de mulheres com menopausa natural, não histerectomizadas. Tratou-se de um estudo de corte transversal, com trinta mulheres na pós-menopausa e histerectomizadas no menacme e 102 mulheres menopausadas naturalmente, comparando-se as respectivas densitometrias ósseas, em nível do fêmur e coluna lombar. A análise mostrou que as variáveis idade e índice de massa corporal estavam fortemente associadas à densidade mineral óssea do fêmur e da coluna lombar, sendo o índice de massa corporal diretamente e a idade inversamente associados. Posteriormente, as trinta mulheres histerectomizadas, foram pareadas por idade e índice de massa corporal, com trinta mulheres não-histerectomizadas, não apresentando diferenças estatisticamente significantes da densidade mineral óssea. Esses resultados sugerem que a histerectomia com conservação ovariana bilateral, realizada em mulheres no menacme, não parece ocasionar redução adicional da massa óssea, quando avaliadas na pós-menopausa.This study aimed to evaluate the bone mineral density (BMD) of post-menopausal women with previous pre-menopausal hysterectomy including bilateral ovarian conservation compared to a group of non-hysterectomized women with natural menopause. Data from a cross-sectional study of 30 pre-menopausally hysterectomized women evaluated in the post-menopause were compared with 102 naturally post-menopausal women, analyzing their respective bone densitometry, measuring the femoral and lumbar spinal BMD. Multiple regression analysis of the 132 women showed that age and body mass index (BMI) were heavily associated with femoral and lumbar spinal BMD, BMI directly associated, and age inversely associated with BMD. In addition, 30 hysterectomized women were matched by age and BMI to the 30 non-hysterectomized women, and bone densitometry did not show significant differences in BMD. These findings suggest that pre-menopausal hysterectomy with bilateral ovarian conservation does not appear to cause an additional reduction in bone mass when evaluated in the post-menopausal phase.

In this study we described the macroscopic and microscopic histology of the reproductive system of male and female Podocnemis lewyana neonates (3.5 months old). We found macroscopic differences in the morphology of the gonads between the sexes, with ovaries being twice as long as testes, and testes being twice as wide as ovaries. Microscopically, we identified several immature elements, such as the lack of a muscle layer in the oviduct of females, and simple epithelia instead of pseudostratified epithelia in the oviduct and epididymis described in reptile adults. We also found a black pigment observed macroscopically in the mesovarium, and macroscopically and histologically in the epididymis. This pigment is consistent with the center of melano-macrophages described in other vertebrates. Finally we described a supporting mesenchymal structure, the appendage of the oviduct, which was much longer than what has been described in other Podocnemis species.

Workers of Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Lepeletier, 1836) develop their ovaries and lay eggs, therefore the production of vitellogenin is expected. In electrophoretic profiles only fat body extracts from nurse workers and ovary extracts from newly-emerged workers show protein with molecular mass similar to vitellogenin. However, an increase in the protein content was detected in forager fat body. This increase was attributed to storage of vitellogenin or other proteins in the previous phase and not discharged into the hemolymph or to an effect of the increased titre of juvenile hormone in this phase of worker life over the fat body functioning.

Background: Complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) is a sexual differentiation disorder, caused by a defect in the androgen receptor gene (AR; OMIM# 313700). It is characterized by the resistance of target tissues to the action of testosterone, which prevents normal male genital development. The objective is to describe a family case of CAIS and highlight the importance of multidisciplinary medical management and early diagnosis of this syndrome., Clinical Case: We present two cases of SICA in a Mexican family. Case 1: 18-year-old female patient with primary amenorrhea and a history of surgery at an early age, without performing gonadectomy. Case 2: 11-year-old female patient who, due to the history of her sister, underwent surgery at that age. In both patients, absence of uterus and ovaries, hypoplastic vagina and male gonads is reported. The 46,XY karyotype was detected with the GTG and CBG band technique and fluorescent in situ hybridization with the presence of the Y chromosome in 100% of the cells analyzed. Although both patients were identified with their assigned sex, they were referred to the institution's psychiatric clinic., Conclusions: The importance of multidisciplinary management for the diagnosis of SICA at an early age is discussed, in order to make decisions regarding the treatment and management of patients, avoiding malignant transformation of the male gonads., (© 2023 Revista Médica del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.)

We describe the unusual case of a female patient with a history of two mature teratomas non-correlated in terms of location and occurrence. A 12-year-old girl presented at our consultation as a result of a growing tumor in the hypogastric region, with no further clinical signs. She had undergone surgery neonatally due to a mature cystic sacrococcygeal teratoma, which was fully removed. No clinical sequelae were noted and no additional treatment was required over a 10-year follow-up. Radiological examination showed a large 20 × 12 × 18 cm cystic mass extending from the pelvic region to the lower hemiabdomen, associated with two similar small formations adjacent to the right ovary. Tumor markers were negative, and a laparoscopic right salpingoophorectomy was carried out, with an excellent postoperative progression. Pathological examination revealed it was, again, a mature cystic teratoma. The genetic study ruled out causation in this respect.
