Se abordaron historias de ‘duelos normales’ y ‘duelos prolongados’, con el objetivo de caracterizarlas y diferenciarlas. Se desarrolló una investigación de corte mixto secuencial en la que se adaptó el Inventario de Duelo Complicado (IDC) para clasificar a los participantes y se hizo un análisis narrativo de las entrevistas realizadas con ellos. El IDC adaptado con 120 personas tuvo buenas propiedades psicométricas y validez concurrente con mediciones de ansiedad y depresión, así que fue usado para establecer los dos grupos de duelo en los que se dividieron las 18 entrevistas realizadas para crear un metarrelato de la experiencia de duelo. En ambos grupos los participantes destacaron el sufrimiento como parte del duelo y dieron sentido a su pérdida usando contenidos socialmente dominantes, pero en el duelo prolongado predominaron valoraciones negativas sobre dicho sentido. Además, en este grupo los participantes reportaron alteraciones en la identidad y la ausencia de una visión de futuro. Se concluye que hay diferencias importantes en la forma en la que el duelo es narrado en los casos ‘normales’ y ‘prolongados’ y que dichas diferencias son consistentes con los resultados del IDC, de forma que la investigación aumenta la comprensión de la experiencia de duelo. Abstract. Stories of ‘normal grief’ and ‘prolonged grief’, were addressed in order to characterize and differentiate them. A sequential mixed research design was developed in which the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) was adapted to classify participants and a narrative analysis of the interviews with them was made. The ICG adapted with 120 people had good psychometric properties and concurrent validity with anxiety and depression measures, so it was used to establish the two grief groups in which the 18 interviews were divided to create a meta-story of the bereavement experience. In both groups the participants emphasized the grief as part of the bereavement and found meaning to their loss using socially dominant contents, but in the prolonged grief group predominated negative evaluations about that meaning. In addition, in this group the participants reported changes in the identity and the absence of vision of future. It is concluded that there are important differences in the way bereavement is narrated in 'normal' and 'prolonged' cases and that these differences are consistent with the results of the ICG, so, the investigation increases the understanding of the bereavement experience.
