This paper examines perceptions, attitudes and preparations for death in Seville between the end of the 14th and middle of the 15th centuries. It does so by analysing the formulas used in testaments and endowments preserved in several archives of the city, paying special attention to two parts: the invocations, preambles and professions of faith at the start of testaments; and the funeral rites and various religious services in memory of the deceased, as well as other pious legacies. Recently, judicial records have served as an important source of information for many topics of historical research. This paper discusses the different possibilities offered by these sources for the analysis of frontiers in the Late Middle Ages, and more specifically those referring to maritime borders.
