In this article, I present the importance of applying the perspective of the sociology of communication in studies about the influence of news in the sports press on the state of anxiety of high-performance athletes in the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (PURNOC). For this purpose, I did a review of research studies conducted in Puerto Rico over the last two decades (2000-2020), focusing on those conducted with objective instruments to measure anxiety in high-performance athletes and the influence of the sports press on the emotional state of them in competitive events. I found eight papers related to the literature review. Five of them are focus on sports psychology and the emotional manifestations of high-performance athletes, while three papers pay attention to the influence of the media on the emotional state of athletes. This study recognizes the need to continue conducting research in Puerto Rico aimed to evaluate the relationship between the sports media, the state of anxiety of athletes and their performance in sports. SOCIOLOGY , *MARXIST philosophy , *SOCIAL sciences , *CAPITALIST realism (Art) - Abstract
With the purpose of laying the foundations for a critique of sociological reason and making a contribution to shedding light on the relationship between Marxism and sociology, in this paper a set of problematic points of Esteban Torres' La gran transformación de la sociología is addressed. The analysis is divided into three moments. First, the idea of sociology that is used by the author is criticized, challenging by that the bases or foundations of Torres' broader intellectual work plan. In a second step, the conception of Marxism that is defended by the Cordovan academic is assessed, identifying the existing differences between the contribution of Capital's author and the aforementioned social science. As a corollary of both operations, some conclusions are drawn, stating that what must to be done is not to transform sociology but to abandon it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL theory , *MIDDLE range theories , *COVID-19 pandemic , *SOCIOLOGY - Abstract
The paper deals with some fundamental problems of the subfield of social/sociological theory, particularly in our Latin American context, taking as a stimulus or pretext some of the problems raised in the book La gran transformación de la sociología, by Esteban Torres. After some initial remarks about the consequences of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic on our sociological activity, the text proceeds in three successive steps. First, some discussions are raised about the appropriate scale for sociological analysis (including a defense of middle range theorizing); then, we reflect on the temporality involved in theorizing, the challenges of social acceleration and the dead ends of "theoricism"; finally, a discussion is raised about the meaning of theorizing from the "South". The conclusions reaffirm the need to continue the debates in this field, valuing Torres' contributions but also highlighting some important differences with his proposals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HUMAN beings , *FIGURATIVE art , *SIGNS & symbols - Abstract
Norbert Elias is an author traditionally absent in communication studies. His relevance for this field has begun to be defended recently, an argumentative line with which this paper is also identified. The article has two interrelated aims. First, present the main dimensions of Norbert Elias' analysis on human communication. Second, critically examine several current studiesthat, in communication studies, take this author as a theoretical reference for their research. To achieve the first aim, it is analysed Theory of the Symbol, a book originally published in 1989, where Elias collects his reflections about the communicational and symbolic dimensions of human being. To achieve the second goal, the paper is focused on the concept of Communicative Figuration, recently developed according to an eliasian perspective, and currently applied in several studies devoted to the topic of mediatization. EQUALITY , *SOCIALIZATION , *EDUCATIONAL equalization , *EDUCATIONAL quality , *HIGH schools , *SOCIAL order , *SOCIOLOGY , *SOCIAL structure - Abstract
This paper exposes a theoretical approach proposal for the analysis of social inequalities through the notions of socialization and subjective experience, from a comprehensive sociology and Schutz's phenomenological perspective. The intention is to emphasize the subjective dimension in the phenomenon of inequality, which refers to the naturalization that occurs through the mental categories that we use to look at and build the social world, and that results in an aspect that strongly adds to structural conditioning of this problem. In particular, it is proposed to study this phenomenon in the context of high school, since it represents a particular period of life in which teenagers appropriate identity categories and in relation to the social order in which they operate. The results, from this approach, propose to rescue the role of the educational institution in the subjective incorporation of this problem, and, with it, address school practices and their objective effects on the lives of students. SOCIAL policy , *CRITICAL thinking , *SOCIAL dynamics , *EQUALITY , *SOCIOLOGY , *SOCIAL action , *SOCIAL innovation - Abstract
Objective: the aim of this paper is to test a sociology of welfare; that is, two analytical tools are argued to gain an understanding of the sociological content of welfare: 1) the identification of the forms of social precariousness existing in Mexico; 2) the idea of the continuum of inequality of violence and its visibility. Methodology: in defending their theory, the authors use analytical and qualitative sociology as a methodological perspective, where classical concepts of sociology function as reflexive tools to promote the elaboration of a qualitative, critical and normative thinking around the forms of precariousness and their opposite, welfare. Results: presented in two sections: 1) The emergence of violence as a structure for the precariousness of life, a section that reflects on the increase in the forms of violence and their importance when addressing the issue of well-being; 2) Analysis of the forms of social precariousness, which proposes a matrix of the main forms of precariousness that actually exist in Mexico, where the elements of the continuum of inequality of violence are identified. Conclusions: it is proposed that a qualitative sociological knowledge of social precariousness and violence, of the forms and dynamics of social action is necessary to understand the substantive meaning of welfare; useful knowledge to guide public actions in favor of welfare in democratic societies, especially to test innovation in the design of social policies. SOCIOLOGY , *SOCIOLOGY of knowledge , *BIG data , *SOCIAL systems , *ACQUISITION of data , *SOCIAL processes , *AUTHORSHIP collaboration , *RESEARCH methodology - Abstract
Like other scientific disciplines, sociology can be observed as a social system made up of researchers, institutions, journals and publishers. These relationships are established via conceptual communications which form networks that establish the way in which disciplined are organized. At present, the big data phenomena offers the capacity to use large data collections to analyse social processes. Big scholarly data sources offer sociology immense quantities of data useful to describe and study the evolution of scientific disciplines in detail. In this article we characterised the last thirty years of sociology through its publications in impact factor journals. To do this, we use data about the sociology journals from Journal Citation reports augmented with article information from Microsoft Academic Graph. The analysis starts by describing the journals, countries of origin, languages, publishers, the decades in which they appeared and their impact factor. After this, we evaluate the evolution of numbers of articles and citations as well as co-authorship and gender proportion. Subsequently, we establish four groups of journal types and study their differences in the previous dimensions using hypothesis tests. Finally, we represent the relationships between authors and journals using an affiliation network that allows us to detect groups of journals that form interesting thematic and geographic communities. The novelty of the work consists in having used a data source of the so called big scholarly data with more than 300 million publications. The paper also provides several strategies to select the data of interest among the millions of publications to reduce their dimensionality in order to represent them in the form of a network. The results show a discipline dominated by Anglo-Saxon countries and large publishing conglomerates. The most prominent journals dominate citations whilst methodological journals have a higher degree of co-authorship and thematic journals have the lowest gender bias. The affiliation network between authors and journals contains two large groups, one formed by the pioneering American journals together with quantitative methodological journals and another one made up of English and qualitative methodological journals. AESTHETICS education , *SOCIABILITY , *SOCIOLOGY , *AXIOMS , *READING , *AESTHETICS , *ANTHROPOLOGY - Abstract
The paper proposes a Reading of Schillers' letters On the aesthetic Education of Man from the viewpoint of the concept "sociability" with which Schiller situates, in the last letter, the territory where the aesthetic way towards "freedom" would break through. It is pointed to the propagation of the sociability concept via the kantian anthropology and the sociology of Simmel. It is postulated the affinity of this approach with the contemporary thinking of the event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TWENTIETH century , *SOCIOLOGY , *ATTENTION , *ARGUMENT - Abstract
"There is no such Revival. Around the Philosophical Disquisitions on Alienation in the late Twentieth Century". The following paper proposes to give arguments to relativize the extensive account that the concept of alienation lost theoretical attention in the field of philosophy during the eighties of the last century, and that a revival of the study of the concept occurred in the nineties. The conclusion is that there was no such loss of attention, but that furthermore, the presumed premises in the discussion concerning alienation from the nineties up to the present were delineated during the eighties. This conclusion has two supporters: the type of approach regarding alienation carried out by analytical Marxism and the philosophical incursions into the concept in the context of North American sociology. Based on this, the text offers a systematization of the history of the philosophical study of the concept in two sections or stages. And it concerns itself with two -and not three- stages because, for what was argued, philosophy did not stop talking about alienation in the eighties, although it did so to a much lesser extent than before (specifically, during the sixties and seventies, considered the boom in the philosophical treatment of alienation).
