Introduction. The effectiveness of intralesional sclerotherapy of lymphangioma with OK-432 (Picibanil) has been proved in several clinical studies. The aim of our study was to review the effectiveness of sclerotherapy of benign tongue cysts with Picibanil as an alternative method to surgical excision. A prospective observational study was carried out to assess the effects of Picibanil on tongue cysts. Material and Method. Between 1995 and 2007 we studied 300 patients with lymphangioma. Twelve of them had tongue cysts which were treated with intralesional application of Picibanil with a dose ranging from 0.01 mg/mL to 0.03 mg/mL. Results. The 12 patients showed good results. In both clinically and by ultrasonograph. However complete regression of the cysts occurred in five cases, while in seven cases the cysts showed atrophy for which reason the remaining cyst was surgically removed. No significant complications after sclerotherapy with Picibanil was observed. Conclusion. OK-432 (Picibanil) is a safe and effective primary method for sclerotherapy of tongue cysts; its use precludes surgical removal in special cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
