COMMUNITY development , *SOCIAL responsibility of business , *PROFIT maximization , *BUSINESS enterprises , *INDIGENOUS peoples of Mexico ,ECONOMIC conditions of indigenous peoples - Abstract
Given the obvious social and economic differences in Latin America, this paper establishes that the purpose of the company is not only economic gain, but also the service and social development of the community in which they are immersed. Faced with this dilemma between service and profit, more ethical than strategic, the paper offers a number of examples where companies achieve better results in the long term establishing the emphasis on service. Finally the paper shows the case of Grupo La Norteñita, which has developed members of one of the poorest indigenous communities in Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Statistical quality control is not been used widely in Mexican companies that afford or sale services, that is why this paper pretend to show a simple technique of quality control in a service area using simple tools as charts. There are several qualitative techniques and few quantitative techniques as charts that could show us if a service is under control, this means, verify if we are doing the service job with previous quality control standards or not. Our objective is to show a simple quantitative technique of quality control using two types of charts: control chart for process mean and control chart for process variability. This paper could guide the analyst to discover opportunity areas in the company where he could apply this technique to completely satisfy the needs of the client. Finally, this material has been made using Excel because we want to offer the quality control analyst a practical tool in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper evaluates the Innovation Stimulus Program (PEI) in Mexico through its contribution to the Baja California Regional Innovation System (SRI) between 2009 and 2013. Using additional behavior methodologies, we analyzed the within-company effect and the network effect, as well as the degree of connectivity and number of interactions between stakeholders from the worlds of business, science, and government involved in the SRI. The results reveal that by making funding for innovative projects subject to connections between actors from the realms of business and science, the PEI is helping fortify the SRI by incentivizing 15% of its interactions. The objective of this research is to characterize the small-scale producers of mezcal in order to a better understanding of their way of producing and organizing, so that when supporting policies are developed, these be aligned with their reality. Methodology. To achieve this, a qualitative exploratory study is conducted. Interviews applied to actors involved in the mezcal industry are used as methods of data collection, as well as a questionnaire applied to 52 small-scale producers. Results. The study shows six elements that help characterize the small-scale producers studied. these are: 1) the sense of family, 2) preservation of identity, 3) craft processes of production, 4) tacit knowledge, 5) spontaneous decisions and 6) informal economy. Limitations. The main limitation of the research relates to the samplés size, which was limited due to the difficulties to access remote communities; this study cannot be generalized. Conclusions. The papers concludes by suggesting that given the characteristics identified, these types of organizations have survived over the years, despite the disadvantages they face in the current socioeconomic conditions. Objective: This paper describes the case of two Chinese companies that are global leaders in digital technology and telecommunications: Huawei and Foxconn. Both companies are pioneer cases of Chinese globalization in Mexico. Methodology: trough the case study method, seeks to show evidence and analytical proposals of this new phase of China's productive internationalization to Mexico. Results: The main results of the analysis show an asymmetrical economic relationship between Mexico and China. Limitations: While trade between the two countries has grown significantly in recent years, it has been marked by an imbalance in favor of China. Although there are no obvious signs that show, whether Chinese companies would have in Mexico a focal point of its internationalization. Conclusions: The case analysis of both companies helps explain its mode of international expansion and its presence in Mexico. While Mexico was not their original destination, both companies have operations in the country as part of their global expansion strategies marked from early stages of internationalization. In each case, the respective firm has followed its globalization patterns, and this has enabled them to consolidate as leading companies in the industries in which they are inserted. This paper analize four competitiveness indices for Mexican federative entities produced by two local higher educational institutions and two local agencies. The results indicate that while these studies require indicators to continuously improve their quality and explanatory power, these changes are greater compared to the main international competitiveness indices. Relevance and reliability for the economic planning will be greater for decision makers, policy makers and individuals concerned as usefulness and benchmarks in the design and monitoring of local public policies. SMALL business , *ECONOMIC competition , *BUSINESS development , *BUSINESS planning , *ECONOMETRICS , *BUSINESS enterprises ,MEXICAN economy - Abstract
Business competitiveness has long been a subject of study and debate in the economic literature, which has pointed to various drivers of business development. Drawing on the Industrial Economics, the New Industrial Economics, and the Theory of Resources and Capabilities approaches, this paper sets forth a panel data econometric model with 2 671 Mexican micro-enterprises over four time periods, detailing the relationship between the competitive advantages of micro-enterprises and external and internal factors, such as the sectoral structure and the tangible and intangible assets of the economic unit. The principal results obtained suggest that the synergies needed for the development of the small-scale productive sector are primarily generated by way of intangible capabilities. INDUSTRIAL productivity , *SMALL business , *INFORMAL sector , *BUSINESS enterprises , *GOVERNMENT policy ,MEXICAN economy ,MEXICAN economic policy - Abstract
Micro-enterprises have traditionally been considered a burden for development, from both the theoretical perspective of social sciences as well as policy praxis. However, for some years now, some of the specialized literature has presented evidence that despite their low productivity, the contribution of the informal economy to job creation and income in less-developed economies is significant. Given that other countries have begun to develop policies to encourage productivity in the informal sector, the main purpose of this paper is to understand, through a review of the regulations that support micro-enterprises, as well as new decrees and regulations, the current position of Mexico in this debate. Companies face demands of competitiveness like quality, diversification and innovation. Large companies are more prepared to compete, having an innovation culture and creating constant awareness. However, the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face innovation barriers, which limit their capability to compete, and growth. This paper analyzes the relationship between the innovation barriers and the capability to be competitive and grow of SMEs. For this purpose, we took a sample of 152 SMEs in the manufacturing sector of the State of Aguascal¡entes (Mexico) to analyze the performed correlation between those variables, making use of a quantitative study. The results show empirical evidence about the influence of the innovation barriers with competitiveness and growth of the SMEs studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to analyze in the context of Mexico and its regions, the effect of technological change on the labor market, especially the performance of the employment structure in relation to the demand for skilled and unskilled labor in areas of technology and technological and performance pay and wage inequality in skilled workers in 2000-2009. It uses information from the National Survey of Urban Employment (ENEU) and National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE). The results indicate that during the first decade of this century has been an increase in the demand for skill, but this increased demand is not matched by an increase in the premium to skills. The present paper scrutinizes the discourse that prevailed in Mexico and in the world in the last few decades in respect of the so-called micro, small, medium-sized and large companies "sector", insofar as it is one of the most tangible expresions of the new liberalism that has been enthroned as the dominating ideology and doctrine since the early 1980's. The view is held here that said discourse must be trascended and a new veritable industrial policy must be formulated, one that allows for the needs and problems of the industries to be addressed selectively and in a planned manner for the sake of the social and economic priorities of the different communities and regions in the country. It is argued that this policy must be nurtured from the great experience accummulated by the Mexican State during the 20th Century whose peak was reached in the policies implemented in this sense by the Luis Echeverría and the José López Portillo administrations in the 1970's. Essentially, the idea would be for the Mexican State to assume again an active role in managing the national economy, for it to resume its corresponding role planning and promoting economic activities, something the market cannot do on its own. REMITTANCES , *CONSUMPTION (Economics) , *HUMAN capital , *INCOME inequality , *BUSINESS enterprises , *HUMAN Development Index , *WELL-being - Abstract
This paper analyzes the long term relationships between incomes and remittances, the principle elements that conform private consumption in Mexico, and the Human Development Index. Given that migration explains the necessity that some Mexicans have of finding sufficient resources in Mexico's labor market, this analysis revises the economic situation in Mexico, inferring that from the crisis of its economic model it would be natural to think that international migration is one alternative that Mexicans have for resolving their problems. However, that implies that when migrants send remittances to Mexico, there may exist a dependency in terms of well-being and human development. In order to study this dependence a errors correction vector is developed, which can capture the long term basis for the interrelations between the variables. As a result, one finds a positive causality from remittances toward components of private consumption and the Human Development Index; a situation that is relevant for establishing the degree to which the well-being of Mexico's population depends upon the remittances flows. SMALL business research , *LEARNING curve , *MEXICANS , *RETURNS to scale , *GROWTH of small business , *BUSINESS enterprises , *EMPLOYMENT - Abstract
Mexico's business structure has been characterized by the presence of microenterprises, particularly those averaging two workers, representing 65% of establishments in 2008 and 18% of employment. This makes them important for equity and welfare improvement of their members. This paper analyzes the performance of a group of 227 microenterprises in the state of Baja California, by the use of a practical application of the concept of learning curve arranged to incorporate returns to scale. The results indicate that in 48% of cases there is evidence of learning processes and 58% exhibited increasing returns to scale. This allows evaluating the development potential of these microenterprises and the design and implementation of proactive programs that encourage their learning and consolidation in the market. The paper discusses the conditions for microenterprises to remain in the market. The analysis demonstrates that microenterprises facing tight constraints may remain in the market only if they are capable of achieving increasing returns and economies of scale that shift down their average cost curves towards more competitive levels. This finding is supported by the analysis of a sample of 95 Mexican microenterprises, and by the estimation of a production optimization model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the management of the security, the performance of the leadership has acquired importance in the implantation of the industrial safety systems. The leadership approach that practices the organizations impels to the workers to the participation in a better performance of the industrial safety handling. The leaders are promotional of the participation of the workers in its industrial integration or security system to the implantation of one new one. At the same time, system SSPA (Management system of Security and Environmental Protection) puts emphasis in which the workers can assume the leadership when taking responsibility of their actions within the industrial security. This paper show an cuasi-experimental design was realised, with the Test t was used to establish the difference of correlated groups and the test of variance analysis to see the differences between the centers. The displayed data suggest system SSPA, with respect to the application of the course of Promotional Leaders, gets their objective: the one to generate in the workers a cognitive direction simultaneously towards the specific industrial safety characterized by an improvement in the attitude towards its leaders of work and one more a more favorable attribution for these leaders. This paper considers financial, operational, solvency, and performance ratios in order to detect when there were balance sheets' variations related to the 1994 Mexican currency crisis. Quarterly data for 88 non-financial Mexican companies that survived the crisis are used, and tests for structural change are performed. Results show that generally firms' balance sheets deteriorated between the fourth quarters of 1993 and 1995. Although in most cases firms' balance sheets improved after the crisis, the recovery was partial and gradual, and overall this episode was prejudicial even for surviving companies. This paper identifies the origins and types of price rigidities that are present in Mexican manufacturing industries. The results were obtained through a survey carried out during the second semester of 2005 with 398 participating firms. The main findings may be summarized as follows: First, on average, firms maintain their prices unchanged for a period close to six months. Second, the majority of firms review their price schedules on a predetermined period of time; however, when significant shocks occur, more than half switch to a pricing strategy contingent on the evolution of the variables that affect their balance sheet. Third, price stickiness is mainly associated to production costs and to the existence of explicit and implicit contracts. Finally, prices react to the type and direction of the shocks that impact each firm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the pending assignments of Sonora's economy, is to reach an industrialization stage from the use of its raw materials, its own institutional efforts and its working and entrepreneurial classes, that is, from its endogenous potentialities. This paper describes and discusses the historical itinerary of the industrialization process of Sonora, based on the study of the different strategies undertaken by the governments, especially those from 1961 to 1967. This period is considered as the main institutional effort of internal bases to guide Sonora towards an industrial alternative, which even though its goodnesses, has succumbed before the legitimization of the 'maquiladora' project. It is argued that the governmental initiatives have been restricted by the existence of an entrepreneurial class, with little or none industrial vision. In this sense, the intention of giving to the state an industrial identity is into the hands of foreign capital. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
