Political protection of natural resources in regions with a recognized importance of biodiversity, such as the Andean-Patagonian forests of Argentina, are endorsed and supported by society. The growing valuation of the environment, and especially of the possibilities to introduce into the market some environmental services, promotes opportunities for the development of capitalism based on the comparative advantages of these regions. Changes in relative valuation of environmental goods- the main output of agricultural production-, in relation to the relative valuation of other environmental services -of tourist exploitation-, strongly affect the economic dynamics of a region such as the one presented. Those changes are generating transformations in the agricultural sector that involve eventual modifications on productive items, and on producer profiles linked to it. A conceptual model is presented which attempts to define the eventual processes of change in agricultural production systems, and to understand the implications of those changes associated with land property and with rent appropriation. Based on this model, the relative situation of different valleys of the north Andean region of Patagonia is discussed in a context of an historic transformation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
