1. Aspectos del Consonantismo Habanero: Reexamen Descriptivo (Aspects of the Consonant System of Havana Spanish: A Descriptive Reexamination).

Abstract

Two studies on the phonology of Spanish spoken by Cubans in the United States are critically analyzed. The studies are: "Markedness and a Cuban Dialect of Spanish," by Jorge M. Guitart, and "Some Theoretical Implications from Rapid Speech Phenomena in Miami-Cuban Spanish," by Robert M. Hammond. The methodologies of Hammond and Guitart are critically examined and corrections are made of certain inaccuracies in their descriptions of Havana Spanish. The five sections of the analysis include: (1) general observations on Hammond's thesis, (2) a description of the educated Spanish of Havana, (3) a description of the people who speak the educated Spanish of Havana, (4) errors in the description of the educated Spanish, and (5) retroflex consonants of Havana Spanish. It is argued that the term "Miami Cuban Spanish" may be misleading since there are many dialects of Cuban Spanish and the people interviewed in Miami were from different parts of Cuba. (NCR)

Abstract

This exhibit guide (in Spanish, with translation in English printed on adjoining columns on each page), describes an exhibition of folk art by Mexican migrant farmworkers presented by thre Folk Arts Program of the BOCES Geneseo Migrant Center. The exhibit is divided into four major themes that farmworkers presented by the BOCES Geneseo Migrant Center Folk Arts Program. The exhibit is divided into four major themes that illustrate central aspects of the workers' daily lives in Mexico: work, religion, decoration, and recreation. The displayed objects represent traditions that are, for the most part, suspended during the periods of time when they are working in the fields in the United States. The program highlights eight Mexican migrant artisans and their crafts: (1) Serafin Muniz designs and manufactures sheaths and knives employed in the harvest of lettuce and cabbage, and manufactures belts, boots, and billfolds upon request; (2) the Meza family displays a home altar that includes a statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe decorated with tissue paper flowers and garlands; (3) Olga Rodriguez makes paper crowns and flowers for All Saints' and All Souls' Days; (4) Epifania Cabrera learned to make rag dolls from an old lady in her home town; (5) the Hernandez family constructs pinatas for their celebrations; (6) Anerl Hernandez crafts paper flowers often used as decorations for weddings; (7) Aurora Guerreo makes paper ornaments and the entries include a photograph and a brief history of the artisan and/or craft. small hand saw. Abstract

The booklet (also in Spanish and French) presents an edited transcript of a conference dealing with images of the disabled in literature and the arts. L. Fielder's keynote paper traces the evolving role of disabled people by examining, in films and novels, the role of myth in society, the debilitating use of euphemisms, the unsatisfactory attempts to glorify disability, and reactions of pity and fear. Responses to Fielder feature criticism of his citing popular works of art over works of greater quality, and the suggestion that disability also evokes wonder. (CL)
